Better Out There

Summary: have as I said in my other reviews with Bose, some products are worthwhile and others can be worthless. If you feel better when you come home from a hard days work and want to listen to quality music and look up at your BOSE speakers than good for you, but if you can get past comming home to a bose product not being there check out the rest of the speaker world. JBL is a far better choice when comparing speaker companies. Or for the price this speaker is in check out your Stereophile magazine and you will see a difference in what type of quality you get for the same price. An 8" woofer is not always the best choice. There are 5" woofers that produce deeper bass, because of its cabinet design and crossover on the board. Even after I listen to a speaker, I tear it down inspecting the internal componets. Open a Bose, than open a BIC Venturi DV62SI. Tell me the difference for price as well as listening to them. I'll bet you behind an acoustic cloth with out seeing you will find the BIC to be a better value and Performing speaker than these. The Bose 301 V utilize dual 2" cone tweeters which are made of paper as is the 8" woofer. The tweeters at loud or louder music will start to detoriate because a paper cone can only produce to 16 KHZ. The ears can extend to 22KHZ. In order to produce that KHZ range you need products such as textile, aluminum, Ti, Silk, etc. Direct Reflecting to me is confusing at best. Placement is truly difficult. When you go to to an indoor concert which way are all the speaker cones facing? I find that whichever way you put these speakers the soundstage can be very hollow of bass, which is also muddy. Every home will sound different. I recommend products from Energy and Mirage. yuo will not get an 8" woofer, but as I said that means nothing. Listen really carefully and you will find a better choice.

Decent speakers, ok price, nice sound, powerful...
by GG25 on October 5, 2006
Pros: Wide sound, good lows, clear sound, sweet trebble..
Cons: Tad expensive, would prefer real wood instead of laminate.
Summary: These speakers are in a stereo set-up, they work great long as they are a decent distance appart, they have a very wide sound. Imaging is good.

They are expensive, but they do have a flat response from 45Hz to 20Khz... so these are a decent buy, they also handle amplifers from 10 to 150 watts RMS and have a nominal impedence of 6ohms.
Trebble is soft, subtle but there.. it's just enough and does offer a nice sound. Not harsh at all.
The 8" woofer can be a little sloppy sometimes, but for the most part it's pretty damn taut, and sounds nice. It delivers some nice mid-bass with pretty good power handling.
The direct/reflecting system, although some dispute it's validity - I like it for non-serious listening.
These are a good general bookshelf speaker for the person who just wants to listen to music.. and not get critical over the speaker.
I'm no newbie.. I've heard other brands, but these are a fun speaker.
I'm also a professional musician.. and I wont use amplification - yet I can quite happily listen to the 301s.
Need a subwoofer for any really deep bass, and can get expensive with amplifer for them too...
Build quality although is ok, I would have liked a little better for the price.. but oh well..1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Got a month ago a pair of “Bose 301” with a “Yamaha RX-497” stereo integrated amplifier, after fast setup I used an Ipod as source and ……… what disappointment … they sounded dreadful!! My old mini Sony stereo sounded much much better… tried every combination possible with these speakers; CD players other amps new cables etc … they still sounded very bad.
Now I am using a pair of used “Triangle Icare” towers … Incredible difference!!!!!1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Rate things for what they ARE, not what they are NOT.
by Stvn6 on May 10, 2013
Pros: Very efficient (doesn't require series WPC rating to really drive), very wide frequency range, attractive, creates an effect akin to having rear speakers (when they're placed properly)
Cons: Particle board construction; cheap feet; limiting design

Summary: These are bookshelf speakers. They are not loudspeakers, floor speakers, a stadium PA, etc. Because of the Bose price tag, I think people tend to hold them to a higher standard, while negating the actual purpose of the actual product. I purchased these in lieu of a romantic cohabitation. Compromises had to be made, and my Genesis floor speakers were too 'ugly' for the living room. So, I needed to find a decent performer that could also be concealed by home decor and could sit atop a television armoire. Certainly, my situation isn't unique, as I've seen this speakers placed above kitchen cabinets and used as bookends in offices. Where I have not seen these, however, is connected to high-end equipment (think professional, non-consumer stuff...Carver, etc.) in serious 'audiophile' or 'stereophile' settings.
Other constraints were the relatively low-wattage rating of my amplifier (an early 1970s, 20WPC unit). I tried a few different models in-home, and most of them required that my amp be cranked to 3/4 volume, just to maintain a comfortable listening level. The 301s, however, are driven with room to spare. The bass is tight, though not as low as I had hoped. The highs are very well balanced. Are these colored? Sure. They create a bit of a dip in the mid range to create a warm sound. It suits my amp, my phono cartridge, and my ears very well, however.
What I did expect (from such a yuppie product) was a bit more in the way of extras. Don't expect anything except the speakers themselves and a manual from Bose: no speaker wire, fancy cleaning cloth...nothing. The box was packaged with tiny rubber feet mounted to a sheet of slick paper to be mounted to the speakers by the user. Now, it's not uncommon to leave those things unmounted, as it offers the user greater flexibility, especially considering that these can be stand or wall mounted. These little feet, however, are crap, and are almost insulting considering how 'up-scale' Bose stuff is supposed to be. Ah well. They serve the intended purpose.
So, for $329, I got the best that I could for what I needed: an attractive, decent performing, concealable bookshelf speaker. This is the only Bose product I've ever owned, and I feel no loyalty to their company name. It really burns me, however, when people want to judge a product for what it isn't. These are not bad. For what I got, I find them to be terrific. -

Summary: I bought these speakers to replace a pair of battle worn Bose 301 series II's that I've owned for 25 years. What a dissapointment! Shame on Bose for their poor redesign on a great, classic speaker. Even though my cat sratched the domes off my II's, and part of the foam around one of the drivers is missing, they still sound way better than the V's.
Now I'm no stereophile, but to me the speakers sound flat and canned. The highs are not as crisp and the bass/midrange sounds weak and muddy. For some odd reason the engineers decided to move the port and one of the tweeters to the rear, which greatly reduces the punch and energy coming out of the cabinets. The cabinets and grills are cheap and "plasticy". Compare them to the fit and finish of a comparable Polk box and there is no contest.
Do yourself a favor and for the same price-$328 as of this writing-instead order the mr2 from Monitor Speakers like I did. They make speakers costing thousands and you can tell their technology has been incorporated into their entry level line. Plus, they are double posted so you can bywire them for increased performance.
As for my beloved series II's? I plan to install the flawless original grills and use them in my study where I can still enjoy them for years to come. -

Bose 301 - Not Such Bad Speakers

Summary: I'm not a big "speaker person" but I do know what my ears tell me. The Bose 301's are a good value and I like the spatial (large) sound they produce. Each music recording is different as far as sound produced goes (obviously), and you can really tell it with the Bose 301's...but this is not a bad thing.
I worked with the speakers and really tweak things until I could sit back and really enjoy their sound. I must say that my Bose sound better than my KLH, Acoustic Research, or my older JBL's or Infinity rs 4000's. I, for one, enjoy the direct/reflective effects produced by Bose. For acoustic music and softer rock, and a few other genres, the Bose speakers do just fine.
I, for one, am sick and tired of listening to people knock Bose.
Are they over-priced - probably, but I could point out a few others that are, as well.
Are they perfect for everyone - no way, but that's the way it is with everything.
With Best Buy's "like it or return within 30 days for a full cash refund", what does one have to lose but a little time? Best Buy IS NOT the place to listen to these speakers...at least my local store did not have a "speaker room", and listening to speakers out on the floor is a poor way to sell any sound producing device.
Bottomline: I did not listen to all the nay-sayers and opted to bring a pair of 301's home in order to check them out...and I am glad I did. For me, they work and I don't need to make excuses or seek anyone's approval for my purchase.
I turn off the lights, kick back, close my eyes, and enjoy. Too bad more people can't simply do that and get on with life. -
Better than most Bose lineup

Summary: I have owned the Bose 301 series V for four years now. I also own their 601 IV, and a pair of 161's for rears in a 7.1 HT setup. I am currently using the Bose VC10 piece of crap center channel. I used to have the 601's as my main front speakers simply because they are towers. The 301's were used as my surrounds. Big mistake. The 301's are better in every way; For Home Theater and for Music. I really like the warmth of the 301's but only truly appreciated their sound when hooked them up to my powerful NAD AV receiver (T773).
Imaging is dispersed as they are direct/reflecting speakers and so HT setup is a challenge. I have found their sweet spot to be 8' apart and facing forward (with no toe-in. ), 2' from side wall and 18" from rear wall. I thought using all Bose in a HT configuration would be better than finding alternate speakers for certain positions, as per their center speaker VC10. The VC10 is terrible. Unrealistic voices, zero bass, just awful. Also, their 161's which I use for rears, are terrible. Tinny and unmatched. Easy to define differences in those two models compared to the 301/601's. I find the 301's as fronts and 601's as surrounds excellent.
To take up the slack (re: lack of base from 301's) I have a Velodyne 10" sub slightly to the left of tv. I have found setting the amp's sub crossover setting to 60 greatly enhances the bass detail missing in the fronts. I had the sub directly behind couch at one point but could not use it to fill in front's bass in this position (it only performed it's low-end as a standard sub would). But having it up front and set to 60 really helps.
For music the 301's are nice and ambient. Rock is handled ok but not great. They truly shine in Supertramp type music. Piano is the 301's friend.
I have my music preference set to use the 301's with the sub. Rock is, again, just ok. AC/DC for instance lacks the punchiness and low/mid, upper/low ripping. It's somehow too hollow. Your mileage may vary here depending on your music tastes.
I use my setup 90% for HT, 10% for music. I am currently shopping for a good center channel and will replace the 301's with a higher priced speaker configuration.
But, the 301's will be the last to go as they will be delegated to surrounds once the new fronts arrive.
For the price, 301's are great and have performed above what I thought they could many times. caveat: a good amp helps alot! -

Summary: I needed to replace my front speakers as part of my Home Theater System. I finally decided to retire my 1970's vintage EPI units. The location for these new speakers- as before - is near the ceiling, sitting above the the top book case ledge in the familty rooms.
I was looking for book case speakers that could serve as Home Theater fronts, plus provide conventional stereo sound. I was toying with Klipsh B2 (@ Best Buy for $235) and Polk Monitor 40 (@ Circuit City for $290) but I really could not give them a fair appraisal because of the lousy acoustics, and lack of sales person help at each store. So I went to Ulitmate Audio here in Minneapolis, and the sales person had me listen to a different Klipsh bookshelf, an Infinity bookshelf, and the Bose 301's, amongst others.
It was the sales person's advice that the Bose would serve me best because of the speaker placement heights, about 8', and the vaulted ceiling in my familty room.
I brought them home - unhooked the old EPI's, and hooked up the new 301's to my exisiting wire which was nothing fancy, and turned them on. Bottom line - They sounded great. I have to admit that prior to purchasing the Boise, I was a bit skeptical - thinking that I was over paying for the name. Perhaps I did, but for $295.00 for the pair, they were at the high point of my price point at $295.00 for the pair, butthe price seemed in line vs the others to which I was listening too.
The store, Ultimate Electronics, Audio says that I have 30 days to try them out, and return them if not satisfied. It looks like these units will be sitting a top of my book case for the next 20 years.
I purchased these for $295.00 a pair My old EPI'sUpdated
I hit the submit instead of the preview. Sorry for the mistakes and spelling errors. -

Summary: I have had the speakers for a little over a year. I bought these nearly new on Ebay along with the stands. I connect them to my Dennon receiver and CD player in my bed room. At age 51, I have listened to a lot of stereos and speakers over the years. While I do not pretend to be an audio purist, I know what I like.
I like a nearly transparent sound. Low end that lets you know it's there without being over powering, clear highs without hiss and a mid range that allows vocals to shine with out overpowering either end of the audio spectrum.
Normally I have to play with the eq. to achieve this goal. I am pleased to say that with the 301 series V's, I don't.
Music, like color, is subjective. It is influenced by room size, materials within the room, room shape and with the 301's where they are located. If you are willing to read the manual, make sure the speakers are not enclosed in a bookshelf, not directly up against the wall etc. their reflective properties surprising.

- Description: Bose 301 Direct/Reflecting stereo speakers convey the power of a live performance, yet are small enough to fit comfortably on a bookshelf or in an entertainment center. These versatile, elegant speakers bring lifelike, spacious sound to music and movies and are an excellent way to bring Bose sound to your stereo or home theater components. In a live performance, music takes many different paths to reach your ears and touch your emotions, including a blend of direct and reflected sound. Direct/Reflecting speaker technology recreates this combination of direct and reflecting sound to deliver music that sounds spacious and more like a live performance. Conventional speaker design focuses sound directly at the listener, somewhat like a flashlight beam. That means stereo effects are most prominent in one "sweet spot", delivering unbalanced sound to the rest of the room. 301 speakers produce Stereo Everywhere speaker performance, so you and your friends and family can sit where you like and enjoy balanced stereo sound from almost anywhere in the room. 301 speakers are a suitable choice when you're ready to experience Bose sound in your movies as well as your music. Connect these versatile speakers to your surround sound receiver and enjoy the benefits of Bose sound in almost everything you watch.
