The good: Beautifully finished, six-piece, 5.1 channel home theater speaker package with advanced driver technology; amazingly potent dual 8-inch, 300-watt powered subwoofer; compact size.
The bad: Compared to the sleek-looking satellite speakers, the subwoofer appears a little drab.
The bottom line: The powerful Definitive Technology ProCinema 800 satellite/subwoofer package redefined our expectations of what a small surround speaker system can do.

Summary: Don't let the size of these speakers deceive you. You might think it's not capable of handling the job of outputting great sounds; if you're thinking about that then your dead WRONG! The Definitive Technology Pro Cinema 800 systems is the best buy and a must have for any home audio freak. The crisp and clarity of these speakers are AMAZING! The small subwoofer that came with this unit isn't the type that is weak; as a matter of fact it's the other way around.
The small sized subwoofer delivers excellent lows and pucnhy bass. The best things about this home audio speakers is their built-in technology in each of the smal speakers. The BDSS technology coupled with passive or bass radiators on top of each speakers helps deliver sound quality that is distorsion free. You get the clean mids because of the BDSS and clear lows because of the bass radiators. Both techonologies work in conjuction with one another in order to bring out that clear, crisp, low, and punchy sounds.
With these speakers you can hear every detail in a movie regardless whether it's a DVD or Blu-Ray. You can hear a person pant when ther're breathing heavily, you can hear the clear sound of rain drops hitting the tea cups (Pirate of the Carribean; Deadman's chest scene), you can hear background noises that you never realise when watching it on an ordinary home audio system. When I was watching the blu-ray movie Green Zone (Matt Damon) and I could feel the explosion as if rocks, bullets whizzing as it passes, people yelling on the background, etc.
I am basically very satisfied with this home audio speaker system. Once I experienced the quality of Definitive Technology's speaker systems, I never looked back on anything. All I can say is that this is how home audio speakers should be made!

Great sound in a small package
by Paul Wooferwitz on May 16, 2008
Pros: Flexibility
Cons: Not much bass without subwoofer
Summary: Professional reviewers have raved plenty about this system's sound, so my comments will mostly concern its great flexibility.

My sound system is first for classical music, second for movies. For music, I'm not willing to accept any compromise not compelled by budget and available listening space. That still adds up to a lot of compromise, and these speakers are what the doctor ordered for both conditions.
Actually, this isn't a review of the ProCinema 800 collection, since that would include the associated subwoofer and horizontally configured center channel speaker, but of five ProMonitor 800 speakers plus my own subwoofer. Because each speaker in this collection is individually packaged, you can either buy them all at once or start out with a couple of ProMonitor 800s and add more as your budget allows, and that's what I did.
I bought the first pair to replace the bulkier speakers I was using as surrounds in a space too small for them. You can hang the 800s from a single screw on the wall, a big plus in my cramped space. But I didn't hang them in back before giving them a good listen as front speakers on stands with enough space around them to get a taste of their wonderful imaging ability, and deciding that (apart from my subwoofer) I'd love to have my whole system consist of them.
One pro reviewer noted that the horizontal ProCenter 1000 loses highs from a listening seat more than about 30 degrees off-axis. It also costs more than the 800. So to round out my system with a center channel I simply raised the TV 4 inches higher so the fifth ProMonitor 800 stands in front of it without blocking the screen, providing a center speaker not just similar but identical to the others.
As for their sound -- well, these have replaced a pair of Phase Tech PC60s I've loved for 23 years and that I'd long wanted to complement with more of the equivalent speakers from Phase Tech's current line, but those are just too expensive now. The ProMonitor 800s fill the bill wonderfully while taking up a lot less physical space.6 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

holy s#&t!!!
by baby-gas-bomb on August 19, 2009
Pros: beautiful full detailed sound came out of these speakers. so much so that i had to spend more than we had originally planned for. even my wife loves these speakers! she remarked how you could here every little detail in the music and movies we tested
Cons: sadly i dont have them hooked up yet. as we are narrowing down what reciever we want to get. we listened to them on a denon 1610 model in the magnolia room of best buy and we think this might be a winner. so i guess that would be the only negative.

Summary: i expected a very detailed sound out of these speakers just considering how much they cost. but i was pleasently surprised to hear not only detailed sounds but wonderfully rich mid's and a surprising amount of bass! we purchased two promonitor 800's and the pro sub 800 but i plan on going back and getting the reciever in about a week as well as rounding this out to a full 7.1 system with two prosub 800's. but alas i say to anyone looking into def tech's smaller speakers SIZE IS NOT RELATIVE TO PERFORMANCE! we only heard two of them hooked up to a 375.00 denon 1610 reciever and i thought there was some kind of sub going lol. these speakers are anything but thin they produce a rich full room filling sound that will shock most people when they either hear how much you paid for them or their actual size. i will only buy def tech products now. it is funny i never even heard of def tech until i went to magnolia at best buy. i was leaning toward a bose lifestyle v10 or v20 lol two of these speakers blow away any bose unit i have ever heard hands down. these speakers are an investment in quality and a rewarding one at that. i just cant wait until i get my denon 1610. go and take a listen you will not be disapointed.
