The good: Takes up less desk space than M-Audio's Studiophile AV 40 speakers; cheapest M-Audio desktop speakers available; rock solid medium-density fiberboard construction.
The bad: No headphone jack or auxiliary input; small 2-inch woofer (compared with larger M-Audio models) makes for noticeable sound quality limitations.
The bottom line: M-Audio's Studiophile AV 20 is smaller and cheaper than its larger siblings, but the better form factor comes with sound quality compromises.
Cons: Certainly not 'portable' in the true sense of the word

Summary: After weighing my options to bump up the sound on my MacBook when I'm working at home it came down to these and the Bose Companion II I decided to go with the cheaper of the two especially since the Bose reviews were often less than flattering.
There are not many reviews for these, one indicated that they hissed another said that they distorted at higher volumes I don't seem to have either of these problems and others raved that these were the best in class. With no personal experience with alternate choices I can't say that they are the best but I am certainly pleased with my purchase.
PS: This Canadian reviewer paid less than $100 from an online retailer and just noticed that Apple US sells them for $79.95.
Pros: Weak bass response/ Good for A/Bing mixes. Good frequency response in mid/upper range.
Cons: Not good for general purpose speakers.

Summary: I don't think people got the point of these speakers. They are reference monitor speakers. When your doing professional audio mixing, you need to do what is called A/Bing speakers (as in A/B: Speakers A and Speakers B). This is where you go between different sets of speakers to get your mix to sound the same on all/most of them. For this purpose, you want a set of speakers with weak bass response so you can hear what your music would sound like on a common low quality stereo. I bought a pair of M-Audio AV40s for this purpose and was disappointed because the speakers had such a full frequency response. If your looking for some good general purpose speakers, check those out. They rock and the extra connectivity is invaluable for hooking up a computer, audio interface, and iPod. If you want a compact set of speakers to A/B with, the AV20 are cheap, small, and will accomplish what you want them to do. Its either this or computer speakers. I haven't tried the AV30s, but they are worth hearing in person to see if the bass is weak enough. The AV40's do take up a lot of space on my desk but they are good to put things on sometimes.
