Summary: Out of the blue my significant other says her brother who works in retail can get us a new 40inch Toshiba 1080 HDTV for 400 bucks. Our first HD, and for that price couldn't pass it up. Got the HD upgrade from our provider and WOW, I highly recommend the Toshiba for the value price range with one caveat; the speaker frequency response is not very good. I am a former radio broadcaster and have a pretty good set of "ears" and immediately went to get something to spruce up the sound.
I wasn't looking for a high end surround sound system. Our family room (in the making) in a 1300 square foot ranch is not huge; the 40 inch is plenty big for our viewing area; just wanted something to add some low end. The first thing I run across at Wal-Mart is the VIZIO VSB200 sound bar. I must admit to doing NO research..the price was less than 150 bucks, and I KNEW it would improve the sound (How could it not? Folks the Toshiba speakers really suck) so I bought it. Got home and realized that we would have to buy an optional optical cable; as the Toshiba has no standard output outlets for the analog cables VIZIO provides. At first I was annoyed at this; but subsequently I am so glad we never had that option as I will explain in a bit. We went to Radio Shack; and purchased an optical cable. The manager emphasized we would be amazed at the sound that the cord affords.
Our TV is positioned in the corner of our viewing area on our own stand; not hanging. The sound bar has brackets for hanging, but it fit in front of the screen, and the brackets wedged perfectly on either side of our makeshift stand. The sleek black color goes perfectly with the jet-black Toshiba. When we finally hooked up the VIZIO sound bar, I was BLOWN AWAY at the sound upgrade. The high ends and mids are so lifelike, you'll ask yourself "is there really a guy sitting in front of me playing the guitar??" I was unprepared for how great it would sound. Now,keep in mind my viewing area is smaller than many, and the TV and soundbar are positioned perfectly in the corner (at the juncture of two walls, as opposed to flat up against one). I knew going in this positioning would make for a fuller sound, including a very rich bass. Those that prefer the kind of bass you can "feel" (thump thump), you can buy a subwoofer and the sound bar has an attachment for that.
Other than the suprisingly great frequency response; I also was impressed with the surround sound feature. Your ears at times perceive sounds (especially the background sounds, like dogs wailing or automobiles speeding off)as coming from a totally different part of the room. I tried out the feature which equalized the volume (folks may like this if you are annoyed with the louder commercial breaks, or just the great variance in movie sound levels..like having to turn it up to understand dialogue; but then having to turn it down, because the music becomes too loud, etc) However I immediately noticed using this feature sacrifices some high end. Sure enough the manual mentions this fact. For that reason, I don't use the feature; but it would be handy for many.
This is the perfect choice for those looking for that theatre sound in a modest sized area. My guess is for large rooms you will have to opt for those pricier mutiple speaker systems. Also, if you have a choice, don't settle for the analog RCA cables provided; get the optical cable. The only reason I gave the sound performance 4 out of 5 stars is the bass, while very good...may not be enough for some (just hook up a subwoofer)..but really, everytime I enjoy the peformance, I ask myself "Did I really pay less than 150 bucks for this?".
My Advice, if you're will buy this VIZIO VSB200, I suggest you have to compare prices before you decide at: *******************/VIZIO-VSB200

Solid Soundbar for Budget Shoppers!

Summary: We recently moved from California to Georgia and, considering our new house features a fireplace, we decided to mount our television above it. I wanted to go with a minimal approach with our AV setup so as not to pull all the attention away from the fireplace so I ditched our 5.1 Samsung system and opted to mount a sound bar under the TV.
Sound Quality:
This sound bar sounds great and is rich in bass despite the fact that there is no subwoofer (although there is an output provided for such expansion). You're not going to shake the walls listening to Judas Priest with this but it is perfect for watching TV. Watching an action movie will leave you wanting the surround sound experience but the bar will effectively provide you with quality sound. It is for this reason that I give it four stars instead of five.
Appearance/Build Quality:
The sound bar is built solidly. High gloss, black plastic encompasses the entirety of the sound bar with two exceptions: the front with is covered by the traditional black cloth mesh speaker cover and the sides which is some sort of metallic/silver alloy. The edges are rounded and smooth giving the device a very modern and sleek look. The bar comes with two legs that function as a stand and can be reversed for wall mounting. The control buttons are located on top and there are LED indicator lights under the speak cloth on the right hand side of the bar.
Mounting:
As I said, I mounted mine under my Samsung TV. The bar comes shipped with the legs attached to it. Simply unscrew the screw holding them in place and flip them around, put a couple of screws in the wall, and viola! Took me less than ten minutes and most of that was measuring, leveling, and marking the wall.
Cons:
There is only one thing that bothers me about this product. The LED indicators that I mentioned earlier could use some overhauling. Basically, there is a combination of blue and white LEDs. They illuminate and flash in specific sequences to denote a particular action or function. For example: if I change sources three blue lights will light up. If the first one flashes that means the first input source is selected, the second light the second source, etc... If I select the SRS virtual surround sound a blue LED illuminates however, I turn off the SRS feature the same blue light illuminates so it leaves you wondering if you turned the feature on or off... The other issue is that there is no light that remains on if the unit is powered on. It leaves you guessing whether or not the last person turned it off when they turned off the TV.
Bottom Line:
Vizio has really established themselves as a solid AV manufacturer with good prices. Sure there are much better sound bars out there but few that come close in quality AND price as this one.
P.S. If you will buy this SoundBar I suggest for best deal at: www.amazon.com/exec/******/****/B002EPF6YO/cnet-offer-2010 out of 15 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I was using the optical out on my New 55" HDTV but the optical connection does not work. I took it back to the store and picked up another one and ran into the same problem. I decided to use the RCA connect instead.
It would work on the HDTV and Blu-Ray Player but not my Tivo. This also happened on both units. I took it back and bought the Vizio VHT210 and it works perfect via the optical connection.
Good luck of you buy one. I'm giving it 2 stars because it does have good sound when you connect a sub woofer to it but that is it.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Pretty Good!
by kudad54 on July 31, 2009
Pros: Nice looking, wall mountable and relatively inexpensive. Definetly enhances the sound on my HDTV and much better with my Blu-Ray Player.
Cons: Does not come with a Sub-Woofer, remote is small and cheap looking. Must use a Fiber Optic cable to get the HD sound which is around $16.00 at Walmart.
Summary: I would recommend this to other people especially if you cant afford a Home Theater system.

Summary: Actually great sound but the thermal overload blows every few minutes. You them have to disconnect sound bar from power, wait, then reconnect and it resets itself. Not good while trying to watch a movie or TV show. This is a common problem but Vizio will not fix it. As I stated, there are many reviews regarding this issue. I'm returning this to Costco. It just doesn't work properly.

Pros: better than what I had before for reasonable price

Much improved sound, great features for the price!
by terhaze on July 18, 2011
Pros: Have a Sony Bravia flat screen. Sound is awful most of the time....too loud on commercials, too quiet to hear dialogue. Bought this sound bar. For the price, it fit my needs perfectly! Was easy to install myself, fairly easy to program my DirecTV remote t
Cons: The instruction manual could be set up a bit better and if it was mentioned somewhere in the manual where to look for the LED lights (bottom right corner of bar), that would be a plus!
Summary: Very glad I purchased this sound bar. Has made all the difference!

Summary: My wife got this for me for Valentine's Day and we had a great time playing with it for a few hours after setting it up. The sound is really rich, which also has a good range in volume... (haven't tried full blast as I have neighbors.)
It was so easy to setup, I just turned down my TV's volume and go straight through the soundbar.
The bar is sometimes questionable on its reception of the signal, (perhaps a more obvious place showing where the receiver is, rather than "lower right of the soundbar.")
Overall, I would definitely recommend this soundbar to anyone looking for an affordable, simple enhancement to your entertainment experience.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
