- With the iPhone 4, Apple again shows that it is a powerful player in the smartphone wars. It won't be for everyone, the call quality and reception vary if you don't use a case, and AT&T's network remains a sticking point, but the handset's striking design, loaded feature set, and generally agreeable performance make it the best iPhone yet.

Apple iPhone 4 - 32GB - black (AT&T) price range: $520.00

The good: The iPhone 4 offers enhanced performance, a lovely new display, and an improved design. It also adds a ton of sorely needed features, both by itself and through the iOS 4 update.
The bad: Multitasking entails some trade-offs, and home screen folders are limited to 12 apps. AT&T reception continues to be spotty, and you'll need a case for the best calling reception. Also, we'd prefer a 64GB model.
The bottom line: With the iPhone 4, Apple again shows that it is a powerful player in the smartphone wars. It won't be for everyone, the call quality and reception vary if you don't use a case, and AT&T's network remains a sticking point, but the handset's striking design, loaded feature set, and generally agreeable performance make it the best iPhone yet.

Cannot perform its primary function of being a phone
by techreviewer22 on June 25, 2010
Pros: Nice Aesthetics, cool apps, but it ends there
Cons: Yellow spots on my display
Reception drops 2-3 bars every time I touch the phone

Summary: If you are a smart consumer (which you probably are since you are reading cnet reviews) then you will stay away from the iphone 4. I bought into the hype and left behind my verizon droid to get on board with at&t and apple. Are there some "cool" things on the new iphone? absolutely. If you don't care about performance, and want to be popular in front of your friends, then the iphone is for you. If you actually plan on making calls without them dropping, DO NOT get this phone.
I have seen all the "solutions" for the signal error and how I need to hold my phone differently.... Thanks, but no thanks. The phone has been returned- I am not going to pay top dollar so I can stand on one foot, pat my head and rub my stomach to get a signal. I'll have my hands wrapped nice and tight around the droid x and enjoy all 5 bars of signal
After all the excitement of receiving my preordered phone, it all went down quickly. My "retina" display had 2 large, noticable yellow spots. Reports are saying it is undried glue, and it may go away, but mine are still here. But my biggest gripe is that every time I touch my phone, i lose 2-3 bars of signal. Apparently apple is responding to this known issue by saying, "you have to hold your phone differently"
I apologize if this review will start to sound like a rant, but I need to share my frustration with the community. Cell phones have been around for almost 20 years now, and the iphone is supposed to be the best device on the market. I don't care how many apps it has, or how cool the front facing camera is, because if I can't make a simple phone call, then it is useless to me. I don't want to have to carry around an iphone and then a second phone to actually make calls. I can't really understand how all the reviews online are not bringing these problems to life.... maybe they are just scared of steve jobs, who know. All I know is that I didnt pay $400 for a screen with spots and a phone that cant keep signal. I will be returning the iphone promptly and sticking with my droid until the droid X is released.

Great, but a few things....

Summary: The minute you pick up the iPhone 4 (I'm going to call it 4), you know its high quality stuff. It's this thin, expensive feeling hardware. It's weird to hold it, because you're not used to this such build-quality. Now, the cameras on the 4 are interesting. Taking pictures is so quick, and I can press the button 4 times in a row with half a second between, and get 4 (fairly) clear photos. Video is pretty nice too. It rolls a bit (meaning things get skewed if you turn too quickly), but when just walking, it's fine. My only gripe with the new camera is that I can't change the white balance, add a tint, black and white, etc. I just want to edit the photos, without having to get another app to do it.
The iPhone UI is, well it just is. Nothing particularly spectacular pops out. It's super fast, thanks to the A4, but otherwise it's what I've had for the last 3 years. Multitasking is nice, but not all apps work yet. Folders is good, but only 12 apps? And hooray for background wallpaper. The one thing I really like about Apple in general, is they fixed little things, and the fixes shave just a little time off. For example, adding a contact is very quick. No more switching pages to add a name, going back, switching pages to enter the number, etc. It's all on one page, and works. I've found that all of the phone it seems.
The battery is splendid. It lasts quite long too. Although I'm not getting 24 hours, I did get 18 last night, with video playing from youtube, and going to my twitter and e mail client.
Cell Reception is improving, trust me. I get 2 bars on my 3G, and get 4 on my 4. It's improving. If they could just ease up on the dropped calls...
THE BOTTOM LINE: If you want a (very, very) full featured phone, that just works, quickly and beautifully, get a 4. If you want a phone that will last at least a day with you doing what you always do, get a 4. If you need a phone that has a high megapixel camera, get something else. If you want a phone without dropped calls, get a new carrier.
But I think once you see this for yourself, and play with it, and use it, you will just want it. Isn't that the way it is with all Apple products, though?52 out of 107 users found this user opinion helpful.

Doesn't deliver on all the hype
by andiamo71 on June 26, 2010
Pros: faster processor (sorely needed), more memory
Cons: what's that yellow hue on the left side of the screen? itunes is totally buggy, non-functional at times with update. Organizing into folders is a disaster with that ridiculous dragging that doesnt work. multitasking is not all its cracked up to be.

Summary: Being a big iphone fan, I was surprised at how this phone did little to 'wow' me. It's not the be all-end all it was hyped to be. Sure, it's much faster than my old 3G, but that seems to be the only bright spot. To tell you the truth, the design is not so fantastic, and now it feels more 'squarish' in my pocket, whereas my old 3G felt more natural. All of a sudden, the screen appears smaller than it should be. Yes, I realize its the same size, and the phone itself is just more streamlined, but I would have preferred they kept the same size and increased screen real estate. There's also a very slight yellowish hue that I noticed running down the left side of the screen, culminating in a yellowish dot in the lower left corner. I've heard other people have this issue also. Reception is no change. I get dropped calls in the same spots driving as I did before, even though I put the phone down upright while driving..so the new antenna seems to be more style than substance. Yes, the screen seems a bit brighter, but I don't see so much of a 'startling' difference in quality. It's definitely not like going from an analog TV to high def...put it to you that way. My friend has a Sprint EVO, and not only is the screen noticeably much larger (fits in my pocket fine also), but the detail and clarity just blew away my 4G side by side...you should do the comparison for yourself if you can. Many of my old apps are not ready for 4G yet, so I'm stuck waiting for them to be updated. I have to admit...Apple released a product that's not quite ready for prime time...along with a version of itunes that is very buggy. I'd actually consider an Android phone, which already has all of the 4G's features and then some. At&t's quality, and that ridiculous 'tiered' data pricing makes you apprehensive to use the data the way you may like, which sort of defeats the purpose of owning a smartphone when you think about it. This is my honest, first impressions of the phone. Loved my 3G...just 'like' the 4G. i could be swayed to switch, which I never thought I'd ever consider. Make your own decision, but don't do it based on hype. Weigh your options carefully, and good luck!

Summary: The second you pick up your new iphone you can just tell is a quality product. Everything is really fast compared to my 64GB ipod touch and the screen looks soooo much more clear. I love having just one device to carry around instead of my BB and my ipod. It synced quickly with itunes, which is where I manage my music/podcasts and I love the interface. Picture quality is great and video quality is good but as with all small camera's, shakiness will alway be an issue. This iphone is much louder than my ipod touch, nice for when I'm tooling around the house and don't have it hooked up to the stereo. Only time will tell if AT&T makes me hate the decision to move away from Verizon but as of now, I'm on iPhone owner for life!

Amazing display & functionality, but with 1 major flaw.
by FoolishHeart.Sarah on June 24, 2010
Pros: Display is incredible, I've never seen anything like it. It's very fast and with the new iOS4 it makes organizing and using my apps better than ever.
Cons: The antenna on the outside was a poor choice. If your hand connects 2 or 3 of the metal bands, you lose reception like crazy. I've purchased cases for my previous iPhones, but this is the first time that I've felt that Apple should provide one!
Summary: The pros definitely outweigh the cons for the iPhone 4. It's the best smartphone I've ever owned. I'm not considering returning it, I'm just shopping for ...

Gorgeous but not perfect as we all know so well
by firefish45 on July 5, 2010
Pros: Slick design, FaceTime is terrific, Retina Display is magnificent.
Cons: Proximity sensor issues (face activates & calls others while on the phone), iOS4 very buggy, Reception Issues based on placement of new antenna locations on side of phone.
Summary: At the end of the day, this is the best phone out there. Period. Everyone may be picking on it now because of the perfect reputation Apple hasn't lived ...
Summary: At the end of the day, this is the best phone out there. Period. Everyone may be picking on it now because of the perfect reputation Apple hasn't lived up to, but in the end, it's far better than any other device. There's a reason every other device copies Apple & why Apple isn't copying them.

Good but not up to the hype. Has problems
by rickmcclanahan on June 24, 2010

better camera, front camera as well
flash on the camera
HD video

Summary: The silver band around the phone is the antenna. If you hold it in your hand in a full grip, i.e. cover the slits on either side of the phone, you can literally watch the at&t bars drop off. Takes about 10 seconds for one bar to drop and then 10-30 seconds for a 2nd bar to drop causing call static and failures. Let go and the bar immediately reappear. Poor design, who tests this stuff?
The task manager is reached by double clicking the home button. You will find it is a most recently used apps list, not the running apps. That list can get huge and includes things like "settings" "inbox" "messages etc. Even apps that are not multitasking ready are there. Do get rid of them you have to delete each icon one by one. Please! How about a delete all? How about a setting to NOT put apps in the task manager unless they are really running and doing something like pandora or a gps location app
Folder implementation has a problem. If you open a folder and click an app, the app fires up as expected. When you exit the app, you are back in the folder, not to the home screen. Why would I want to go back to the folder? I already chose the app I wanted, I ran it, I exited it. Now put me in the home screen! You have to click out of the folder even though you are done with it.13 out of 23 users found this user opinion helpful.

Apple releases yet another item that sets the bar,but..
by indiantechie on October 23, 2010
Pros: The Screen, Camera's are improved, The Design, i never liked the rounded back of the formers, and of course the UI, the Battery trumps many out there
Cons: AT&T is the only godang thing that is preventing this phone from being like THE BEST!!!!,

Summary: The iPhone 4 is yet another phone that sets the bar(or atleast it did when it came out) its rivaled b a only lucky few like the Galaxy Series, the Evo, The Incredible, and the G2, the screen is one of the best out there with no complaints aginst it actually complements the camera and makes the camera seem better than it, it has a front facing camera, the way it's built is EXTREMELY SEXY!!(atleast to me) it's famous what else do you want, but AT&T prevents it from being the best in it's catergory like evry other apple product it
I keeep my Review the Same Antennagate withstanding, cause that was just a over hyped rumor with almost no truth in it, people saw a chance to criticize Apple and they jumped on it and other people who didn't know anything about the phone but didnt want to seem ignorant jumped on the bandwagon.

Flawed but still an excellent smartphone...
by bubbagumps on July 6, 2010
Pros: 1)Phone is very stylish and very thin compared to others out in the smartphone market. 2)The Retina display and the updated camera with flash is a huge improvement. 3) Multitasking finally... not the best but very good. 4) Largest amount of software
Cons: iTunes management software can be very slow if you have a large amount of music, movies, and photos that need to be synced to your computer. Unable to support Adobe Flash is a royal pain in the butt when browsing the internet.

Summary: I like the iPhone compared to what is out on the market now but the Droid phones seem to get better and better after each version. I will most likely purchase a Droid phone if they keep making large improvements and/or surpassing the iPhone, but as of now the iPhone is still the better and more fun smartphone to use when it comes to the vast amount of applications in every category (games, productivity, utilities, etc.) , and improved mail support via mail application or the included version iOS4 operating system. The major drawbacks are the AT&T service depending your location of service and of course the big antenna issue which everyone that has even though I haven't yet since I bought my phone with bumper the same day. I wouldn't be caught without any protection just in case I would have dropped the $300 phone.

Summary: After playing around with one today, I've decided to keep my EVO 4G since I feel it's the better phone. On my EVO, I can install a sega genesis emulator and play genesis games on it for free, no need to pay for bad apps. On my EVO, I can use Grooveshark and stream whatever song I want; no need for iTunes. On my EVO, I can make and receive calls; I can't do any of that on my iPhone (well, the call functionality sometimes works). My friend that had the iPhone 4 actually spent more time with my EVO today than he did with his iPhone 4 due to the ability to stream live video over 4G and made the comment that "wow, the internet speed on this thing is as fast as wi-fi". That should tell you what the better phone is. If Apple was a bit more open and allowed more apps and the phone was on different carriers, it would be the better phone, but as things are, right now it's not. Do yourself a favor; don't buy it until another carrier like Sprint or Verizon picks it up.

Specifications
- Manufacturer: Apple
- Part number: 4850251
- Description: While everyone else was busy trying to keep up with iPhone, Apple were busy creating amazing new features that make iPhone more powerful, easier to use, and more indispensable than ever. The result is iPhone 4. The biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone. All the breakthrough technology in iPhone 4 is situated between two glossy panels of aluminosilicate glass - the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains. Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever. It's also recyclable. The 960-by-640 backlit LCD display boasts a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, making it the highest-resolution phone screen ever. To achieve this, Apple engineers developed pixels so small - a mere 78 micrometers across - that the human eye can't distinguish individual pixels. That makes text remarkably sharp and graphics incredibly vivid. IPS technology also provides excellent color and contrast from almost any viewing angle. Created from Apple's own alloy, then forged to be five times stronger than standard steel, the CNC-machined band is the mounting point for all the components of iPhone 4. The band provides impressive structural rigidity and allows for its incredibly thin, refined design. It also functions as both iPhone 4 antennas. Apple engineers designed the A4 chip to be a remarkably powerful yet remarkably power-efficient mobile processor. With it, iPhone 4 can easily perform complex jobs such as multitasking, editing video, and placing FaceTime calls. All while maximizing battery life. iPhone 4 includes a built-in three-axis gyroscope. When paired with the accelerometer, it makes iPhone 4 capable of advanced motion sensing such as user acceleration, full 3D attitude, and rotation rate. Translation: More motion gestures and greater precision for an even better gaming experience. The iPhone 4 camera shoots gorgeous 5-megapixel photos and stunning HD video. And with its advanced backside illumination sensor, it captures beautiful images even in low-light settings. The built-in LED flash does double duty. When you're taking pictures, it works as a flash. When you're shooting video it can stay on to light up the scene. And on the front of iPhone 4, the built-in camera is perfect for making FaceTime calls and shooting self-portraits. While most phones have only one microphone, iPhone 4 has two. The main mic, located on the bottom next to the dock connector, is for phone calls, voice commands, and memos. The second mic, built into the top near the headphone jack, is for FaceTime calls and for making your phone calls better. It works with the main mic to suppress unwanted and distracting background sounds, such as music and loud conversations. This dual-mic noise suppression helps make every conversation a quiet one. With its large Multi-Touch display and innovative software, iPhone lets you control everything using just your fingers. How does it work? A panel laminated on the glass senses your touch using electrical fields. It can register multiple touches at once to support advanced gestures such as pinch to zoom, two-finger tap, and more. The panel then transmits the information to the Retina display below it.
