The good: The Verizon iPhone 4 offers a hot-spot feature not available on AT&T's device. Performance was better in most regards.
The bad: The Verizon iPhone 4 lacks world roaming and the ability to access voice and data simultaneously. The hot-spot feature didn't work with all devices.
The bottom line: The Verizon iPhone 4 has much in common with its AT&T counterpart, but varying features and different performance give it enough room to stand apart. It won't vastly change your iPhone experience, but we welcome the consumer choice that it brings.

Summary: I would like to prompt this review by first stating that I have been a huge fan of Apple as a company and the iPhone as a device since its introduction in 2007. Despite the hype around iPhone i found myself connected to verizon and no verizon iPhone in the foreseeable future. Luckily the iPhone for verizon is now here. I must admit I had my reservations because of the fact that usually when you have HUGE expectations for something you are let down. Everything about this phone lived up to the hype. Amazingly simple to use yet powerful, it quickly opens and switches between apps (of which there is a huge selection for any occasion) the battery life for a touch input device, with the screen brightness as what it is, is incredible, the camera is amazing and take incredibly high definition pictures, facetime and skype work beautifully, push notifications are quick daresay instant, and the voice calling is crystal clear no matter where you are. This phone is a jack-of-all-trades and does so with elegance and style. I would recommend this phone to anyone that I know. Wonderful.

gonna sell lots just cause its on verizon

Pros: good for novice users
uses verizon's network
stylish form-factor, light weightCons: lack of technical details (cpu type/speed, etc.): http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
uses a proprietary 30-pin connector to work w/ 'docking station'
non-removable battery
apple's xenophobic stance towards open software developersSummary: I'm an engineer of 30+ years, so I'm most interested in features, functionality, design, and benchmarks.

non-removable battery is a bad design - if such a device encounters water, there is no chance to pull the battery out, to stop the internal electronics from frying. I've saved cell phones, a laptop, and an audio-recording device from doom by immediately-removing the battery, letting these dry. not that I go throwing my electronics into the hottub on a regular basis - but stuff happens...
while the apple tech-specs claim 720p (1280x720, 16:9 aspect ratio) 30fps recording -- the docking-station uses vga 1024x768 (4:3 aspect) native output. Audio quality -- during 'easy' video playback -- appears only rated @ 160kbps- and that presumably requires 'additional cables' from the docking station to your receiver.
I find it odd the phone can record 720p 30fps (1280x720, 16:9 aspect ratio)-- yet by what I'm reading- may only playback max 576p w/ native 1024x768 res?! Fascinating design choice.
there's not enough info. to ascertain the audio-ratings of: "...1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format" -
PCM stereo at what sample rate & bit depth? given the weakness of 160kbps playback of the "lesser" formats, I'm interested to see somebody benchmark this.
Apple - at best - offers only component-video out @ 576p, using that proprietary 30-pin docking station...
Proprietary connectors are *never a good thing* for the consumer - you have to use a special piece of hardware (docking station) to obtain a "standard consumer connection" (component video or vga connection).
While they included a standard '1/8th inch mini headphone jack', Apple chose to not include "industry standard" HDMI connectors on the docking station. Comparatively, there is at least one android-based phone and several android tablets which have integrated HDMI connectors - don't even require a docking station.
The advantage of HDMI - which has been around at least 5 years now @ consumer level - is to have all audio & video routed via a single HDMI cable into a larger receiver for audio & video distribution.
I think apple offers HDMI (& DVI) connectors on their laptops/desktops - so its bizarre to me that they made this 'lesser' choice for the latest iphone. Perhaps that will come w/ next year's iphone model?
in case you're wondering, here are some statistics for uncompressed HD video:
http://www.blackmagic-design.com/support/detail.asp?techID=30
Apple's iphone highest encoding (1280x720 @ 30fps) is 35mbps - that's bits per second, likely including audio - and indicated in the chart, uncompressed 720p @ 60fps 8-bit depth requires 105mBps - that's bytes per second. if i got the math correct, that is somewhere ~12:1 compression-ratio for apple's best-effort?
wish the tech-specs documented the hardware codec-chipsets they're using- some strange asymmetry going on in apple-world-design-land...
BTW, verizon's network upload-speed isn't anywhere near 35mbps; you're lucky to get 500kbps upstream on 3g. I'm not so believing in the 'high-res video conferencing' ("facetime")- though it could work alright thru optimal wifi (~54mbps wireless g-ish)?
Anyways, despite my above-reservations, the phone is easy to use, even my most non-tech-saavy friends have fun w/ it.
If you're not an engineer, you'll find this is a fun toy - and I'm sure lots of folks will buy it simply cause its on verizon now. Its a fun phone!
If you're an engineer/technophile, you'll most likely have more fun in android-land -- you're not just happy to see somebody - you have a tiny-linux-box w/ 3+g internet in your pocket! 3g wifi hotspot capabilities, over&under-clocking, it runs linux, they give away the SDK to you for free if you want it --- more recently: hardware accelerated openGL-compliance, removable battery, capactive multitouch, some w/ hdmi, they'll actually tell you what hardware is under the hood, ...
android works great for non-engineers too - just ensure whatever device you get is at least android os 2.2 (froyo) compliant, you'll be happy.3 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Battery Life needs some serious attention.
by alex1676 on March 16, 2011
Pros: Ease of use.
Cons: Battery Life!
(I shut off everything that would drain the battery while I slept 6 hrs-woke up to a dead phone anyway.)
I cannot block phone numbers by myself; having to call cust srv to have them blocked.
Cannot use iTunes music for ringtones.
Back Up AssSummary: It was an easy transition from a Samsung Alias to the iPhone for this old timer but a disappointment as well.

Do Not But VZ I-Phone
by robinweitzel on February 27, 2011
Pros: I-phone is a great product. VZ service is disappointing
Cons: We replaced this phone twice. Dropped 12 calls in the first 2 weeks. Totally unacceptable. Then VZ charged us 35.00 for restocking fee for a phone that does not work. We love Apple, but am really disappointed with the VZ network.

Nice in some ways but Calendar is a deal breaker
by shall2003 on February 9, 2011
Pros: Good call quality, nice size, and easy sync with a mac
Cons: The chief "con" and likely deal breaker for me is that you cannot delete or edit calendar entries downloaded from a computer! I confirmed this with Apple! That is crazy. Apple, you may have made a Droid user out of me.
Summary: After getting the phone yesterday I confirmed with Apple that calendar entries downloaded from a computer can neither be deleted nor edited on the phone. So if you make an ...
Summary: After getting the phone yesterday I confirmed with Apple that calendar entries downloaded from a computer can neither be deleted nor edited on the phone. So if you make an appointment and get a call or email on your phone saying the time must change, you cannot change that calendar entry without using a computer to do it. Even my old Windows Mobile phone let me do that, after which I would snyc with my computer and update my computer calendar that way. Since calendar and contacts are more important to me than photos and music, I will likely have to take this back. Very sorry. Waited for months for this.

then No service.
I spoke CS people today and also spoke CS supervisor who refuse to give network extender.
And he told me the contract I signed paper has ' Verizon can't not guaranty inside of building'.
Man, my desk is next window in middle of city.
Verizon CS sucks
I have been with verizon for many years and now I'm thinking to switch to AT&T
he said ' you do whatever you can, but I can't do anything for now'
All I need is to be available to use my iPhone.0 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Apple
- Part number: iPhone 4 - 32GB
- Description: While everyone else was busy trying to keep up with iPhone, Apple were busy creating amazing new features that make iPhone more powerful, easier to use, and more indispensable than ever. The result is iPhone 4. The biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone. All the breakthrough technology in iPhone 4 is situated between two glossy panels of aluminosilicate glass - the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains. Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever. It's also recyclable. The 960-by-640 backlit LCD display boasts a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, making it the highest-resolution phone screen ever. To achieve this, Apple engineers developed pixels so small - a mere 78 micrometers across - that the human eye can't distinguish individual pixels. That makes text remarkably sharp and graphics incredibly vivid. IPS technology also provides excellent color and contrast from almost any viewing angle. Created from Apple's own alloy, then forged to be five times stronger than standard steel, the CNC-machined band is the mounting point for all the components of iPhone 4. The band provides impressive structural rigidity and allows for its incredibly thin, refined design. It also functions as both iPhone 4 antennas. Apple engineers designed the A4 chip to be a remarkably powerful yet remarkably power-efficient mobile processor. With it, iPhone 4 can easily perform complex jobs such as multitasking, editing video, and placing FaceTime calls. All while maximizing battery life. iPhone 4 includes a built-in three-axis gyroscope. When paired with the accelerometer, it makes iPhone 4 capable of advanced motion sensing such as user acceleration, full 3D attitude, and rotation rate. Translation: More motion gestures and greater precision for an even better gaming experience. The iPhone 4 camera shoots gorgeous 5-megapixel photos and stunning HD video. And with its advanced backside illumination sensor, it captures beautiful images even in low-light settings. The built-in LED flash does double duty. When you're taking pictures, it works as a flash. When you're shooting video it can stay on to light up the scene. And on the front of iPhone 4, the built-in camera is perfect for making FaceTime calls and shooting self-portraits. While most phones have only one microphone, iPhone 4 has two. The main mic, located on the bottom next to the dock connector, is for phone calls, voice commands, and memos. The second mic, built into the top near the headphone jack, is for FaceTime calls and for making your phone calls better. It works with the main mic to suppress unwanted and distracting background sounds, such as music and loud conversations. This dual-mic noise suppression helps make every conversation a quiet one. With its large Multi-Touch display and innovative software, iPhone lets you control everything using just your fingers. How does it work? A panel laminated on the glass senses your touch using electrical fields. It can register multiple touches at once to support advanced gestures such as pinch to zoom, two-finger tap, and more. The panel then transmits the information to the Retina display below it.
