Better than the Tour, not yet a 5 Star, but still better
by PAC-FL on July 20, 2010
Pros: Track pad better than track ball, a few nice software tweks, larger RAM (512) addition of WiFi if you need it. Still a nice looking phone.
Cons: Same old BB stuff, BB web browser still SLOW, battery life not that great, call sound / clarity could be better, ring tones still till low on highest volume.
Summary: A slight improvment over the Tour, should have been this model to begin with, BB should have skipped the Tour and went to this phone, Overall typical BB quality and ...
Summary: A slight improvment over the Tour, should have been this model to begin with, BB should have skipped the Tour and went to this phone, Overall typical BB quality and consistent with RIM's equipment in general, I am hoping that OS 6.0 with WebKit Browsers will improve the main fault in BB's biggest downfall, the web browser, but after adding BOLT it really isn't that much slower than my HTC hero. and for the ring tones and message alerts, I am looking for something with some volume, the 10 on the volume is a few levels too low, should have a few more steps to bring it to a level you can hear in a noisy enviroment. Call quality is OK but not as good as a few other phones I have / do use. This is not a Sprint issue, (the call quality) all my other phones are on Sprint. So in conclusion, it is a good phone, better than the Tour, but not by much, 4 Stars was actually a geneous rating, but it is a well built phone. I hope RIM will continue to stive to improve and keep up with the other manufactures in their future software and hardware, Compitition is a Good Thing.
OK now that I have had this Bold 9650 for a little over a month, it is driving me crazy, this is by far the worst reception I have ever had from any p[hone, I took my daughters BB 8330m on sprint also, with me on a business trip, I had to use the 8330 most of the time as the 9650 Bold had no signal or just kept dropping calls, after a long web search, I found out this is a common problem on the 9650 Bold, so I guess Steve Jobs knew what he was saying when he mentioned RIM has just as many reception problems as the iPhone 4, a few of my co-workers have iPhone 4's with the reception problem on them, but they are still more reliable than this POS from RIM. RIM needs to take notice of this problem, I would stay far away from this phone, past my 30 days, so I guess it goes on ebay fro whatever I can get for it, on Craigslist there are already 10 of them for sale, I guess I'll take whatever I get on ebay, I am done with Blackberrys, if they don't get on the ball, they will go the way of Palm

Summary: I love this phone. Disclaimer: this is my first smart phone but my wife has an iPhone so I know the difference. If you want a work warrior in one sleek, sexy and feature packed piece of hardware, this is it.
I use this thing for every kind of email and notification known to man. It consolidates all of my email into one interface that allows for very granular handset to mailbox reconciliation. I feel in total control of my messaging, calendaring and networking. I could do all three without my laptop.
The Wi-Fi allows me to use faster connections without burning $ (although most people have unlimited now). I loaded all the Google Apps, DVR controller, Grooveshark?etc and all use WiFi without a hitch (Google Voice requires your mobile radio be on though so that?s is a bit of a disclaimer)
The phone sleeps when put in the holster but remains "listening" and the notification profiles are limitless (although when you set up a certain notification for a contact it will override the profile setting...at least this is what I have experienced).
The camera should have been 5.0 megapixels. Since I take this thing everywhere, I would like to be able to take reliably decent pictures, something I haven?t been able to do. This is the one obvious screw up on RIMs part as far as I am concerned. All the soon to be released phones with these specs have 5.0 megapixels. Since we?re talking about what sucks, the browsing experience is not good with RIM browser and slightly better with BOLT. Read further for the hopeful fix for this.
I tried to tip the balance in the cool area and download a ton of apps geared towards more fun than business. This can be done but without a touch screen that is larger this can be challenging. For me business productivity is fun (I know sounds crazy) so this phone is the Cadillac of business smart phones. The physical keyboard is tops with me and it?s a bit more spacey than the Bold 9700. This tips the scale to the usability side but you should really compare the BBs that offer completely separate keys because they have more forgiveness and the screens tend to be a bit bigger on those as well. It?s not all business though. I do have fun apps that work well but you get the gist.
The real key thing for me is the 512MB of RAM. Most other BBs have 128 or 256 with all the newly spec'd phones coming with 512. So, I believe this will stage the Bold 9650 (at least memory-wise) for BBs OS 6.0. I read this phone sports the 624 MHz processor but I just can?t find consensus on that. OS 6.0 offers better OS and, yes, better native web browsing. The other kick a$$ feature is this phone is GSM and CDMA. It is a world phone. I threw my wife's SIM card in from AT&T and I was able to make calls but not browse the Web (mostly cause it only picked up EDGE from the AT&T SIM). Sprint sells this sucker unlocked so all that was easy to do. I hear VZW locks it down but I cannot confirm. Do your research on that.
This phone is a 4.5 for what is it meant to do. It can be cool but working folks think the cool factor comes from what you can do with it with respect to your day to day activities. I am in love with this phone and can?t tout it enough. Having said all of that, this is not close to being an iPhone or Droid and vice versa. If you want to just browse the web and play games, wait for RIMs Storm 3 or Bold 9800 they should bridge the gap between cool and business. If you want a real business player with a solid, sexy look and feel total package, this phone is for you.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Superb Phone
by kwame49 on June 9, 2010
Pros: It's a quantum leap forward from the BB 8350i I used for a year. The BB 9650 is excellent for travel overseas and the extra memory makes access and service a breeze.
Cons: Trackpad can be super sensitive - takes some getting used to initially.
Summary: Great package, great service, great user-friendly connectivity anywhere in the world.

Summary: The BB Bold 9650 is a good business phone. It could have been an amazing business phone if the web surfing would have been in line of Androids and iPhones. The integration with Exchange and other email services (I have 6 distinct business email address) was seamless. All aspects of Exchange/outlook: Contacts, emails, Notes and tasks integrated seamlessly. The keyboard has a good feel and easy to use, The touch pointer is excellent although a bit too sensitive. The BB part of the phone works fast and the screen is sharp and easy to read in all lights. The new social media apps worked very good, although they did not have all the features as available on other platforms.
The only draw back was the poor web browser. It is so frustratingly slow that I prefer to wait to come back to the office in order to use the web or ask colleagues who have Android or iPhones. Clearly this is a serious drawback in today's market as compare to comparable smartphones.
Overall it is a good business phone as long as you do not need to surf the web. -

solid, functional great phone

Pros: qwerty keyboard, wifi, bbm, solid battery life, sprint navigation.

Summary: Going from a blackberry 8830 world edition, to an iphone 3gs, to G2 to Evo and now to 9650 I couldn't be happier. I never got used to the touch screen on the iphone or Evo and while the apps were cool, many of them were just gimmicks. The things I really use are also available on Blackberry, the apps are functional on the Bold as well, not just toys. The two things I do miss are Chase banking app and Netflix app, but I don't miss them enough to go back to an iphone or droid. The key things for me are the blackberry qwerty keyboard, the longer battery life, better emailing and texing experience.

Synch problems abound
by bobdibbs on February 20, 2011
Pros: I just got my Verizon Bold to replace my Palm Treo. It certainly has more complexity and options, and seems like a nice unit with many applications that could be helpful.
Cons: It was sold it to me with IT policy embedded which disabled synch. Though BB helped the same problem returned with address book only able to synch by "wireless," and "help" menu's solution does not work.
Summary: Could not get synch to work right. Help menus were inaccurate to turnoff wireless synch. Even Verizon folks were stumped. I spent 2 1/2 hours with a BB tech ...
Summary: Could not get synch to work right. Help menus were inaccurate to turnoff wireless synch. Even Verizon folks were stumped. I spent 2 1/2 hours with a BB tech to "wipe" and "reformat" unit. So far this phone has cost me about 14 hours of my time so unless you enjoy spending all your time trying to figure out such gadgets avoid.
