BlackBerry Bold 9930 (Verizon Wireless) price range: $99.99
- Reviewed by: Nicole Lee
- Reviewed on: 08/16/2011
The good: The RIM BlackBerry Bold 9930 has a wider and thinner design and is exceedingly well-made. It boasts stunning graphics, a new touch-screen display, an amazing physical QWERTY keyboard, a faster 1.2GHz processor, and the new BlackBerry OS 7 that brings augmented reality apps, 720p HD video recording, and more. We're also pleased with the photo quality of the 5-megapixel camera.
The bad: The BlackBerry Bold 9930 doesn't have the best call quality, and we think its price is too steep. The OS 7 user interface is not that different from OS 6.
The bottom line: The BlackBerry Bold 9930 is the best QWERTY BlackBerry to date, but should be priced lower.

Summary: Let's start off by saying this is a great piece of work. The down falls mentioned in this review are nothing to me nor probably anyone that hasn't gotten over the novelty of owning a phone that can do a butt load of things you never use.
Battery: A little weaker, but still great. It is pushing more hardware so what would I expect. A full day is not a problem.
App Stores: If your phone does everything you want in the way you want done, what important apps do you need to add to your phone (Blackberry). There are probably people out there that have different wants, but I have no need for games on my phone. My only use for them is to keep my 5 year old occupied in the car from time to time. I am sure there are games good enough for that if needed. Most other apps on the other platforms are there to make their phone's current functions better. Blackberry does pretty much everything it does do very well.
SD card is behind the Battery:
Nice if it wasn't, but I might take mine out 3 times a year.
Now for the positives, and I will use my Bold 9650 as a Benchmark:
Keyboard: Not much different other than it silky smoothness. Zero effort on softer rubber keys. It just has a great feel to it. It lost its plastic feel altogether. Not that the 9650 wasn't good, but this thing is a pleasure.
The screen:
Android like. Crisp and great color. Definately a lot wider which matters when viewing web pagers. Every mm counts.
Touchscreen is more useful than expected. Just not having to scroll at all is nicer than it would seem. Moving up and down websites is a load more fluid. Sliding up and down sites like an Iphone. Pinch magnifying is nice to have.
Music interface: Runs like an IPOD. Actually plays music from itunes. External Speaker could be loader. Running with headphones is great. Easy volume and song skip buttons.
Camera: Still pics are clear when you get a good one. The lack of autofocus makes things a bit more challanging. Haven't given this much time. We'll see if it gets better. Not a killer for me.
Video Camera: Very good. 4 out 5. Took good videos at the pool, and also recorder my swing at the range. I thought it was very nice.
Phone: Sounds 20% better than the 9650. No issues whatsoever. Not too much time committed to this, but sound was so good that I didn't take any notice to it. That says something in itself.
Web Browsing: A world of difference. Fast as anything else I have used. It's not 4g, but it moves at a non-annoying pace. Biggest improvement from the last Bold. Thank god. This is where the touchscreen makes itself very usefull. Scrolling, magnifying, and pressing links. Bravo.
Contacts, Calendar, and Tasks: Blackberry's wheelhouse. No change needed in my opinion.
To sum it up... it is my perfect device. There are more capable devices out there for sure. They are capable for the people that want to entertain themselves with apps, and want to improve on the inate abilities of there unpolished operating systems. I am sure BB has plenty of decent timewaster games to download, but certainly not as sweet as the other 2 platforms. As for the apps available for productivity.. BB doesn't really have any that aren't already there and in good form. I am sure some of you have ones you use, but I don't have the need(yet).
For myself, this is all the phone I currently need, and prefer. I am a physical keyboard user. I was fine operating an Android for about 5 months, but it was a stressful experience. Just answering a call raised my heart beat. Texting and emailing was a chore. Sometimes I delayed responses for when I had the opportunity to devote my full concentration. Some communication was neglected altogether because it became a chore. I am definately biased here because I am constantly told people enjoy the touch keyboard..I just don't see it. I am definately finding myself short answering an email more often in the car more often. I don't condone it, and keep it to a bear minimum. Sorry
I love this phone because it is PERFECT for me. It has refined what truly needed improvement... the web experience. My only fear is that the next generation may be a little better. This is why I jumped on it the day it came out, and am thrilled that I did.
This is the first review I ever took time to submit if that adds any weight to my endorsement!12 out of 12 users found this user opinion helpful.

Best Blackberry Ever!

Pros: * Fantastic build quality and very thin
* Very high performance in all apps

* Best keyboard on any mobile phone, period

Summary: Performance in virtually all areas of the thanks to the 1.2 GHz snapdragon CPU and Adreno 205 GPU (which is the same GPU in the Sony/Ericsson Playstation phone). The Blackberry can finally enjoy not only real games based on OpenGL, but all animations in apps also benefit from the GPU.
The screen resolution on my Bold 9000 was very crisp, but the resolution on the 9900 is super crisp at 640x480 on a 2.8" display (287 dpi), which is high enough that you cannot see individual pixels. The keyboard is the best of any phone and I didn't think it could get better than the 9000, but it really is.
Bottom line, the Blackberry 9900 is now finally on par with Android and iOS, but with the addition of email, calendar, BBM and social apps that are so much better on Blackberry.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Coming from an iPhone 4, i have high expectations when it comes to smartphones. When i saw the Bold 9930 i knew it was the phone i wanted. I saved up, and bought it contract free. I have to say, that while it might be expensive, its worth every penny. the keyboard is amazing! i can type so fast! i've had a bold 9700 before and the original droid and nothing compares. The touch screen is also very cool and iPhone like resolution and responsiveness. But i love the design. Its so slim, classy, and when you set it down its definitely one of the sexiest phones out there.

Summary: OK, so my last 3 phones have been: iPhone 4, Droid X, Droid. So I've been using mainly touch screen phones. I really enjoy this new BlackBerry (I've owned BlackBerry's before) The touch screen is great, and the keyboard is wonderful. I've gotten tired of the touchscreen keyboards and the auto correct. But anyways, there are times that the phone does not respond on touch scree, the phone freezes, and as of the last few days I've been having rebooting problems with the phone. I could try and get it replaced but if it happens once more then I'll try and get it replaced for another 9930. One thing that really annoys me is when downloading apps, and such the phone freezes up and won't let me multitask.

I recently updated my OS software to version 7.1.0.580. It addressed many of the software concerns I had, most notably the silent call flaw and media playback issues.
I am a convert from a Motorola Q9c on Verizon running Windows Mobile 6.1. I was used to a certain feature set and got along very well with my device for far longer than it should have lasted.
That said, I was used to a longer battery life, in all likelihood because I didn't have WiFi built in, rarely used data (went without a data plan for the first two years of ownership) and Verizon blocked my GPS from being useful for navigation outside of VZ Navigator.
To that end, I wanted a phone with a similar form factor, good front-facing QWERTY keyboard, some of the amenities that should be standard that I lacked and hopefully an improved display.
I got all those things.
Is it some freak superphone? No.
Is it a strong web browsing, communication tool with some modern features? Yes.
It is also the best BlackBerry ever made.
Now for the technical review...
The Bold 9930 has a unique design that takes cues from past BlackBerrys and other similar devices and really creates a composite that is a stunning piece of hardware. The stainless steel band that trims the edges pull together a soft touch rubberized ring inside of that on the back, with a carbon fiber-looking composite material designed to conduct the NFC signals from the antenna built into the battery door.
The front is simplified and elegant from past BB models. Gone are the colorful buttons, but in their place monochromatic keys that are an acquired taste for some, but a very clean looking device that can hang with the top contenders in sleek design.
The keyboard cradles your thumbs and makes typing with speed a breeze. If you're converting from another QWERTY device to a BB for the first time, there is a learning curve for some of the symbols and minor functions (like the ampersand -- & sign -- being in a menu instead of a function/alt of the standard keys). Altogether, the illuminated keyboard trimmed with chrome accents between the rows and stylish, yet functional ridges make this keyboard the best QWERTY keyboard on any mobile device that I have ever seen or used.
The keys around the band of the phone are pretty good. They don't have a lot of play to them and press softly, with just enough tactile feedback to know you pressed them. The playback buttons on the right side can be a tad tricky -- mostly if you're using a case (like the RIM softshell case that I use), but you get used it it after a while.
No issues with the placement of the MicroUSB port or headphone jack. the stainless steel band doesn't really reduce the play or jiggle when the USB charger is plugged in, but it does serve to protect the recessed port a little better than some other phones.
Call quality is sufficient. No celluar network is stellar, but volume is fine. No distortion. The speakerphone works well and can be activated with a hardware button on the keyboard (the dollar sign key) or via the touchscreen.
The display itself is one of the finest RIM has ever put on the market. Finally a legit touchscreen on a portait QWERTY device. A little larger than my old Q9c and cramming 640x480 pixels into a 2.5-inch display means this display has a pixel density second only to the iPhone 4(S). This is great when using the web browser or any other text-intensive activity (which BlackBerry users are almost always doing).
The touchscreen is responsive and accurate, within the limitations of the OS. When memory issues occur, it takes a while to register, but I push this phone far beyond what a normal person would or should, so this may not be an issue for everyone. Despite such a relatively small display, I have not encoutered virtually any issues with touching the wrong icon or item.
Combining a full touch interface with the trackpad is excellent when working with text because small print is hard to move a cursor through accurately and this solves that issue. This is something that plagues all touchscreen devices and RIM implemented a brilliant hybrid solution on this device.
As for the OS itself, it does a good job of using the graphics processor onboard this Snapdragon processor -- which I believe is the same one used in the original EVO and a few other phones of that generation. Animations are smooth, scrolling is too. Almost as smooth as iOS or WindowsPhone, but under heavy load, things sieze up more than I would like.
The onboard memory is good enough to hold a strong selection of good apps that enhance your experience, plus a good variety of games.
This is not a gaming phone per se, but it can handle some surprisingly graphics-intensive games and barely misses a beat. Load times scan be slow on more demanding games, but that's not a problem exclusive to BlackBerrys.
BB OS tends to build in a lot of features that other operating systems leave to the app developers. It's a double-edged sword, but it works for me.
Media is a huge function for me. I listen to all of CNET's podcasts (or did... really only two left now) and having a device that will grab that for me is great. The podcast app is built right in. The media library organization is great, but I don't tag my files well enough to really take advantage.
One major advantage to BB OS is that it will playback OGG audio files, which is what I started building my digital music library of all the music I own with. At this point, it would be a total time sucker to go back and redo the libarary in MP3 or WMA, but there would be some advantages in on-device organization if I did so.
To this day, OGG is only supported out of the box on BB devices. WP and iOS can't do it for sure and I believe Android takes some wrangling first.
However, if I dare pause my playback at the wrong time or too many times, I will get a "Device Media Processor Busy" error and the only way to continue playback is to reboot the device. That is a total pain and an unacceptable waste of time.
RIM hasn't worked this bug out and has no solutions. A real shame.
I multitask like crazy though and I'm sure a lot of the weird errors I get are generally uncommon for the average user. The 7.1 OS update fixed a lot of the major flaws in the original carrier release of the OS. If you aren't on 7.1 out of the box, update that before you do anything else.
I won't bore you with ramblings about apps because that's a personal preference, but rest assured that all of the key amenities and features that other phones have are also available in App World. Check out a site like CrackBerry.com or BlackBerry.com itself to delve deeper into that. I will say this though, excellent FREE voice-guided nav in the latest version of BlackBerry Traffic. An excellent app and a must-have for you nav addicts.
Next, connectivity.
The 9930 suffers from a lack of HSPA+ connectivity tha the 9900 twin enjoys with the GSM carriers. However, what it lacks in a data speed boost, it gains in network ability. This device can operate on both GSM (EDGE/HSPA) and CDMA (EVDO), with a range of frequencies on the radio to make it one of the most -- if not the most -- comprehensive world phone on the market.
Documentation in the box (and a contact preset on the included SIM card) make it fairly simple to switch over to an international plan on the fly when needed.
I live in the Greater Cleveland area and I have never had a dropped call on my end unless I was in an underground location surrounded by lots of concrete and even then, things hold up remarkably well and far better than I would expect given the location. My Q9c would have given up under many of the conditions I succeeded with on the 9930.
WiFi works very well for a device of its size. Obviously it doesn't have an antenna with the range of a full size laptop or other larger device, but I can get around the house or the parts of work that have WiFi routers without too much trouble. The device is pretty good about switching data connections on the fly when one connection is lost. Nobody has perfected this, but this phone does a pretty good job.
It also has NFC functionality built in and WiFi hotspot ability. NFC is nice, but there are so few uses just yet that it's not overly useful. That's changing very quickly, and mobile payments aren't the only thing RIM and its partners are cooking up (again, hit up a BB news site like CrackBerry to research this). The WiFi hotspot requires a seperate data plan that I'm not willing to pay for, so I have not tested this.
Bluetooth works just fine. Not a real battery hog, but then again, I turn off WiFi and Bluetooth if I'm not going to use them. Toggling them on and off is really easy from a pulldown menu you get by tapping the clock.
Occasionally if you lose the Bluetooth connection (like turning the paired device off), you get a spinning green circle over the toggle check box to turn it on and off, and it won't let you tap it to turn it off. Just use the trackpad and click. Not a huge deal, just one of those quirks.
I use by BT mostly with my 2008 Mercury Milan's Microsoft SYNC system. It works virtually flawlessly as a phone and media player. One weird quirk is that it automatically launches the media player whenever I switch to the Bluetooth streaming audio input. This gets annoying -- especially after I flashed my memory card and only had some stock music from a game I downloaded onboard.
Audio quality in playback is remarkable. Many people complain about audio quality and fidelity, but it is great in my Milan.
Same media playback issues apply here occasionally. Not sure what causes that.
Also, I have had an issue in the past when switching back and forth from Bluetooth where my phone calls can't be heard on either end. It just goes silent. It requires a reboot to remedy. I can't even find a way to describe this to RIM to report it and I can't find any other identical instances of this. I'm hoping I'm just an outlier.
Speaking of boot times, it's faster than older BB devices, but way slower than Windows Mobile ever was. I can live with it, but the faster the better and it's a tad slow for me (but instant on is an imperfect thing right now).
I'm probably missing some key parts of this review, but if anyone ever has any questions about this device, please feel free to get in touch with me. If I don't have the answers or insight, I will do my best to find someone who can and will.
Updated on Aug 23, 2012
This update made it so that I can no longer multitask and remain in bedside mode. As many BlackBerry users know, bedside mode allows you to set a sound profile, dim the clock, etc. for sleeping. It used to remain with the sound profile intact until I unplugged the device, despite whether or not I would multitask. This was very convenient. Now when I switch tasks while in the mode, it exits bedside mode until I switch back to the clock app. Without bedside mode, I often forget to turn my sounds back on when I wake up and end up missing calls or getting messages late.
The new OS update has a program built in to the OS that, when enabled, automatically monitors all processes and kills anything that's causing memory leaks.
Better battery life came in the update too. Certainly more consistent than in the past.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Amazing phone, best I've ever used

Pros: Vivid touch screen, accuracy of texting and emailing with the BEST KEYBOARD EVER, camera

Summary: It was contract renewal time, so visions of new phones for myself and my family danced through my head. I'd been pouring over every detail of the droid phones and the iPhone. My 14 year old son asked..."Aren't they running out of things for phones to do?" I laughed, but then I thought about his question.
I said 'needs some work' near the end of the review. I meant BB APP WORLD needs some work.
It's a loaded question and I knew what he was getting at. The silliness of the phone 'pissing contest' with all the youtube videos comparing one to another. The giant screens. Useless gimmicks like 'Siri'
I decided to stop, take a breath, and decide what I truly needed in a PHONE. I had 160 apps on my Droid and I literally used about 10-15 of those. The rest were part of the 'pissing contest' ("Hey, do you see what my phone can do!? Bro-stache! Voice warping software! 3D games!")
I needed 100% accuracy in texts and emails. Clear phone calls. At least a workdays worth of battery life (10 hours of heavy usage). Contacts and calendar sync with gmail. 'To do' list. The ability to handle multiple email accounts, including Exchange. A simple, decent camera. Medical apps like Epocrates. Music apps like Pandora, Shazaam, Slacker radio. Utilities like Evernote, Dropbox. You get the idea. Mostly as a functioning phone, a real phone with organizing tools, but with a few entertainment things.
First let me say that it is truly a beautiful phone. Slim, sleek, stunning design. One of the best LOOKING phones ever. The touch screen is vivid, crisp, and clear.
Now, about my 'needs' from my PHONE.
Accuracy. I am a physican at a busy hospital and we communicate with each other EXTENSIVELY via text throughout the day. The main problem I'd had with my Droid Incredible was the virtual keyboard. If I spent an hour a day texting, literally 15 minutes of that time would be erasing incorrect 'auto corrections'. My thumbs will never get smaller, I will always hit the wrong keys on a virtual keyboard. I had several keyboards on the Droid with very sophisticated prediction software, learning the words I used most, etc. It will never be good enough. iPhone keyboard is far worse, with absolutely horrid options for customization. Blackberry 9930 keyboard is the best thing I've ever typed on. I've never used a BB before but I took to it instantly.
Instead of BB's stupid Bold commercial showing bicyclists with glow-in-the-dark wheels driving around, they need to show me at the hospital smashing my virtual keyboard phone against the wall....then cut away to me smiling as I discover what typing on a phone can be like. Stunning. If texting, emailing, and accuracy are important to you, don't underestimate this keyboard as it truly separates this phone from anything else available.
Clear, loud phone calls. EXCELLENT noise reduction. People hear me and I hear them. Perfect.
Battery is decent. BB users are not thrilled because they are spoiled with 2 days of use in their old, slow, no feature phones. This thing is fast, with a brilliant screen, and it needs juice. I am thrilled with it because I come from the land of Droid where you have to charge the phone multiple times per day. It gets me through long days. I bought the extra battery with dual charger from Amazon, but I have not had to use the second battery yet. There's a HUGE extended battery available, but it makes it look nuts. Some people don't mind, but I love the sleek look, so I will never get that.
Syncs with gmail, contacts, calendar. Not as smoothly/thoroughly as Droid devices, of course, but it works very well.
Multiple email accounts no problem. POP, IMAP, Exchange.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the camera! It doesn't have 'auto focus' it has some sort of way to focus on everything at the same time. Forget what they call it? IT DOES NOT TAKE CLOSE-UP PICTURES WELL! So, if you are buying your phone with a need for close-up photos, this phone will not suit you. The dedicated camera key is soooo convenient. Why is this not on every phone? Fast, clear, fun to take pictures.
BB app world has an atrocious set up. It's confusing, some apps are not represented in BB app world, you have to go to the developer web site to get many programs, app world constantly signs you out when you are browsing on the computer, etc. But most of the major apps are available, and they work fine. Everything I need is available. You too will be fine with apps, it will just take a little digging.
I suggest you sit down and write out what you need from your phone. This BB will NEVER beat iPhone and the latest Droids for speed, apps, screen size, gaming. But, it doesn't need to because it's a better PHONE. Needs some work.
Love this phone. My wife got the Galaxy Nexus as did one of my sons. My other boy got an iPhone 4S. I feel that my choice is a better actual functioning phone. I LOVE IT. However, I won't win the 'pissing contest' as they are downloading the latest 3D Magic 8-ball app.

Summary: I've had my Bold for less than 24 hours and this is my summary (if anyone cares). Let me first say that I've had many phones. I've had all of the iPhones, LG phones, and every single Blackberry other than the Torch and Storm. The Bold really is a great phone. I love the keyboard, the speed, and the size. It feels great without a case, and with a case. The camera isn't as bad as everyone made it out to be. It takes decent pictures. The battery doesn't seem to be THAT great. I haven't talked on it for more than five minutes at a time, but I've done a lot of texting, browsing, and email. I'm guessing it will last through a day of heavy use, which is more than I can say for the iPhone 4 and Droid phones. It's tough to find a phone with good battery life these days. The touch screen is pretty good, although I've noticed when you touch it sometimes it doesn't read the exact spot you're trying to tap and will hit something else. This happens with all of the other touch phones as well, so it's not a surprise. I also noticed that there are some things you can't touch. Like when I'm composing an email and I want to go back to a previous word or sentence and I touch it with my finger, the cursor doesn't go to that exact spot and you have to use the trackpad. All of these things are minor, but I thought they were worth mentioning. I switched from the iPhone 4 to this phone and I couldn't be happier. I was so sick of the auto-correct and the terrible battery. It's worth sacrificing the iPhone 4 camera for everything else the Bold has to offer. I hope I helped with some of the questions that people may have!

Summary: For me, the pros of this outstanding new member of the Blackberry family far outway the cons. I like a physical keyboard and this one is a work of art. It is as responsive as any other 3G phone and has all of the apps a professional could want. Its size is a real plus for anyone who doesn't like wearing a phone on a belt clip. It is barely noticable in my shirt pocket and not noticable at all in my suit coat. I love it!
