The good: The RIM BlackBerry Bold boasts one of the sharpest displays we've seen on a smartphone and offers great multimedia performance. The smartphone also brings HSDPA support, more productivity tools, and an updated OS. Other goodies include Wi-Fi; GPS; Bluetooth; and strong e-mail support with full QWERTY keyboard.
The bad: The Bold is a bit bulky and expensive. The Web browser isn't as easy to navigate as the competition.
The bottom line: For those who waited, the RIM BlackBerry Bold won't disappoint. The Bold impresses with its brilliant display, enhanced productivity tools, and excellent multimedia performance to deliver a more powerful and well-rounded smartphone to mobile professionals.

Good business phone that doesn't suffer from perfection
by AlexGreatMK on January 26, 2009
Pros: Awesome screen, keyboard and loud speaker. GPS works like a charm (using Google Maps). Voice commands work surprisingly well. WIFI network detection / connectivity is sweet. Productivity application suite is very nice, alarm app. is very pretty :)
Cons: Battery life, phone is "useless" without a BlackBerry specific (or at least a good non-BlackBerry) data plan regardless if there's WIFI or not around, extra application selection very limited, settings menus need work, PC software not spectacular.
Summary: Just an intro, I'm an ex Nokia E65 user (Symbian 3rd generation) and most of my comparisons will be with regard to that phone.
The good:
* Keyboard: way better ...Summary: Just an intro, I'm an ex Nokia E65 user (Symbian 3rd generation) and most of my comparisons will be with regard to that phone.
The good:
* Keyboard: way better than using number pad for typing text. The auto-correct feature (for English) is pretty accurate, so words like "won't", "don't", "can't" ... get auto corrected flawlessly - and this matters when sending out anything but an informal text to a friend.
* Voice commands: 1 button push, and just tell the phone the name you want to call or dictate a number, and it works 8 of 10 times. The other 2 times the phone will narrow it down to 2-3 people and you just say "1,2,3", and you're on the way. I find it very helpful when driving and have to dial those 1800 numbers.
* GPS with Google Maps: I was downtown Toronto, looking for Starbucks. I had no idea how easy it is to find one. Fire up G.Maps, type "Starbucks" and locations to 100 closest ones TO YOU are displayed ON A MAP, with phone numbers, working hours... SWEET!
* WIFI: If there is a weakest signal that works, the phone will connect to it. Many times I get connected where my laptop (a pretty good Lenovo one) fails. It auto-detects security type and sets the connection up automatically.
* Productivity application suite that came with the phone is very satisfactory - does not support Office 2007 tho (at least my phone), but there are viewers for Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2005 and below, and I can open PDF files too.
* Calendar/address book sync... With a PC works great, with internet requires a data plan (WIFI won't do here). I sync my BB with my Google calendar and my Outlook contacts, and the phone keeps all 3 in perfect sync.
The Bad (or not so good):
* Battery life - it just sucks. My old Nokia could go for 2 days with HEAVY (ab)use, up to 4 days with normal use, and this phone needs recharging daily with that same normal use. Heavy (ab)use and I may have to charge the phone by 5 PM.
* Data Plans: If you got an unlocked phone or don't want to pay an extra $30 for a data plan (in Canada), you're out of luck. None of the nice features work (push email, other email apps, internet sync, GPS...) even if you get WIFI. If the data plan is not BB specific, you can still "simulate" push email by downloading 3rd party app (that still doesn't do WIFI), but to use the built in push email functionality, you HAVE TO HAVE a BB specific data plan. Ouch!
* Settings menus: I never had a BB before, and they may be the same for all, but compared to my Nokia's ones, these look like they were designed in Notepad. Not to mention many settings are missing (although they're described in the manual - like, SMS delivery notification for me).
* Browser: Its obviously not your PC browser, better than Nokia's, but still not quite as good as that thing they have on the iPhone. You can download Opera for free, and it does improve a bit, but still not quite as good as the iPhone.
* Applications: If you don't need any extra cool-ness in your phone, you probably won't worry about this... The business apps are in there - tho many require BB specific data plans. But none of the WOW, COOL! apps are available.
* PC Software: For one, you can't download your multimedia files through Bluetooth - must have a cable. So if you take pics, you have to wire your phone to your PC. Also, sync is kinda slow - reads entire phone, reads entire pc, compares, reads again, asks permission for even non-conflicting changes, and this update takes about 2 mins.
Overall, I'm happy with this phone tho. I think the pros outweigh the cons by far, and in conjunction with a good data plan, this is one powerful "toy".
If questions, feel free to email me.

Best Yet!!!
by andrett3000 on January 24, 2009
Pros: Everything. Miles ahead of any other smartphone. I've seen some call this phone bulky. It is wider than my Curve but I have big hands and this phone fits much more comfortably. don't drop it like I did my curve. Keyboard is great screen is amazing!!!
Cons: Browser is pretty bad, though better. Downloaded Bolt app to fix that. Vibrate is a lil soft.

Summary: The only thing this phone does not do well out of the box is web browse, and that's a simple fix. Best phone ever, and I've had WM phones, Blackberries, and used an iphone. The only thing the iphone has on the Bold is the browser. All these bad reviews are from iphone stans!!!! If you are used to blackberries, or just want a cool @!# phone, get the Bold. FYI......The Storm sucks too.

From Palm Treo to iPhone 16G to the Blackberry Bold..
by heatherfitz on January 22, 2009
Pros: Blackberry has made this phone with the OS users in mind! Everything has worked perfectly together, syncing contacts, email, photos, and music. But now I actually have more text messaging and email capabilities than I had before, ie. forwarding!
Cons: I only have 2 complaints so far, the ball-mouse button (whatever its called) and the small size of the text. It will take some getting used to. If your hands shake, it problematic. It's better than finger scrolling thru the 100's of pages in iPhone.
Summary: Feeling like the minority in those who have or want an iPhone, I was less than enthused. Other than having what my 6 year-old daughter thought of as a "cool ...
Summary: Feeling like the minority in those who have or want an iPhone, I was less than enthused. Other than having what my 6 year-old daughter thought of as a "cool phone mom", I wanted to switch back to my Palm Treo (a lot like Blackberry phones) from the start. It was not because of the "technology was too difficult", or "couldn't figure it out" but for other reasons stated below as you read; in fact the one reason I took so long to switch to the Blackberry Bold was because we're a Apple/Mac household if you will, I have a MacBook Pro, use MobileMe as my email provider, Air Port Extreme etc. I was afraid that these things wouldn't be compatible or many applications would be unavailable by switching to Blackberry Bold. This has been furthest from the truth!
Although the iPhone looked sleek and beautiful, I found myself wanting something with a little more "substance" to it. I am very active in day to day life and have horses we show and ride, I always felt like my iPhone was so delicate and dainty that I couldn't even take it with me to the barn in fear of dropping it in the dirt, slipping out of my hand, etc. I like to feel something in my hand for a cell phone, I don't ever put or need to put my phone in my pocket like some guys like to be able to do, but I definitely could if I wanted to with the Blackberry Bold.
While with the iPhone I missed having a keyboard pad with buttons rather than the touchscreen one on the iPhone. I hated how about 75% of the time I would have to delete or go back to fix where the letter right next to the one I thought I hit, did instead. This is frustrating when your in a hurry or driving (of course I never did that, lol), so many times I would just say forget it! The reason this happens is because the phone responds to your fingers upstroke instead of where it actually hits. The Blackberry Bold doesn't have a touchscreen, so I love their QWRTY keyboard!
The Blackberry Bold is overall better as well in the volume and pitch of the ringtone as compared to the iPhone. I missed so many calls because if the iPhone was in my purse or not right next to me, I wouldn't hear it ring.
Overall, the iPhone just caused me a lot of grief. I did not like how the text messages, voicemail and recent calls were all completely separate and if you didn't go to three separate pages on your phone each and every time you picked it up to check for missed calls, etc. you MISS all kinds of calls and messages. Plus, there wasn't a message that would pop-up each time you woke the phone telling you of unread or missed messages, etc. which I liked about the Treo. Well wait, there is a tiny .5 - 1mm number that appears next to the icon corresponding with if it's a text or voicemail on the iPhone.
The iphone is way overrated. So, unless you just want to have the "cool phone on the block", I would recommend the Blackberry Bold for it's practical applications and set up.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Enter the BOLD!
by BBDragon405 on January 11, 2009
Pros: Screen is crystal clear! Sound quality is very loud and clean. Nicely built phone. All the blackberry features. 3G data speeds plus wifi. Internal memory, Updated OS.
Cons: Battery life can use more juice. Other than that the phone has been good to me.

Summary: I have owned this bold since november when it came out. Before that I had the iphone 3G, and before that a curve. I gave up my iphone because it lacked pic text and other simple features, plus no insurance. I love blackberry products and how solid they are.
The bold is everything that i look for in a phone and need. The phone is really built solid, its masculine i can agree, and feels good to hold in the hands. The look of it is really classy, elegant, and stylish, which I really like.
If you already used a blackberry before then the same programs apply to this. There are a few more new apps and the OS is updated. The processor is really fast unlike the old blackberries and a totally new look, some of which you can learn to get used too. I kind of got confused but learned really quickly. Everything is really easy to navigate and the email is worth it. Emailing is simple, easy, and fast cause of 3G.
Multimedia is really good, specially with the screen. The screen is really clean and clear. It's like a mini HD screen. Videos and pictures on this screen is crisp! Email and texting will really please you with the screen. The sound on this phone is stereo and has two speakers on each side. The sounds is really loud with music and speaker phone, sound is clear. The full keyboard is really comfortable to use, its big and nicely textured to type. I used the curve keys and they are nice, but a little too small, this will make typing much easier. It comes with an internal memory of 1GB, I mainly use it for software and files thats needed for the phone, but I also have a 4GB micro SD for music and photos/videos.
Its a blackberry, so if you owned one in the past, you would definitly love this phone. It has all its blackberry features plus more. I would have to say blackberries are the most satisfied product and name that I own. It is very user friendly and solid phone. 3G runs great and wifi makes it much better for those areas with no 3G coverage. Really fast.
Like I said before I had this phone since november and have no problems with it. I see all these ridiculous post and how the phone sucks, but #1 those are fake post and #2 I dont think they even own one. I have own mine and had it for months. The only thing I can say that the battery could use some more juice. I got about 2 days use out of a full batter charge. Too bad you cannot switch the 3G off.
The only time I had to do a reboot was when I had the phone sitting next to me at a football game in the icy cold weather of 24 degrees. It was soo cold that my screen started to glitched, turned white, and double images appear. Remember the phone was sitting on my lap and coat pocket in the cold weather. I did a quick reboot in the car and its working like gold. Take care of your phones and they will take care of you.
Overall, This is a solid phone and the best one I highly recommend. You will be really happy, if this is your first blackberry then hope you like it, and it will take time for you to learn it.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Love to text? Get the Bold, not the iphone!
by camriokid on December 31, 2008
Pros: Wi-Fi, Video, tactile sensation on keyboard, and best screen EVER on a hand-held.
Cons: Just a bit wide, but willing to "suffer" for the awesome display. Still wish I could de-clutter the home and applications screen. Too many icons for stuff I will never use. I also wish the track ball were about 20% bigger...it just seems to small.

Summary: I have been a BB Curve user for about six months, but wanted to take advantage of the Bold's Wi-Fi and video features, which current Curves do not have. However, texting is the thing I do most. I was temporarily seduced by the sexiness of the iphone, but when I borrowed my friend's iphone to try texting -- what a disappointment! If you are into speed and making no errors on entry, then the iphone is NOT for you. The pop-up letters need too exact of a "hit" to be accurate. The Bold's QWERTY keyboard is the best I have ever used. Hands down. You will be zipping through texting and e-mails right away. Bottom line - get this phone...you will love it!
