BlackBerry Curve 8530 - black (Verizon Wireless) price range: $142.55

The good: The RIM BlackBerry Curve 8530 has 3G and GPS support, which the T-Mobile version did not. The compact smartphone also offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 2-megapixel camera.
The bad: The smartphone feels a bit cheap in the hand and has a low-resolution screen. You can only save apps to the phone's main memory.
The bottom line: While we're not huge fans of the design, the RIM BlackBerry Curve 8530 is a good choice for first-time smartphone buyers and offers more than its GSM counterpart.

Do yourself a favor and run far away from this phone

Summary: Where to start with this piece of junk? First the battery life is abysmal, then the issue of this thing burning itself up. Watch out when this happens as the phone just starts to heat up until it fry's itself, and there is nothing you can do about it. Then the screens just go for no reason...lines through them, rainbow issues, etc. As I said, the best thing you can do with this phone is load it in a skeet thrower and use it for target practice...they are really that bad!

Summary: I'm on my third Blackberry Curve 8530 already. When I first got the phone, I thought it was going to be really useful, but I've had so much trouble with it that I've made the decision to *downgrade.* The first one I had had the plastic covering over the LCD screen come loose, the second had an absolute software malfunction to end all software malfunctions (half the keypad decided not to work, the track pad wouldn't navigate the home screen, the "S/4" key was typing every other letter, and battery pulls did nothing) and now this third one that I received has a tendency to "white out" on the screen during phone calls and reset while using the web browser. The social networking apps from RIM, like "Twitter" and "Facebook" are absolutely terrible. I've had a huge problem with the one for Twitter especially, considering how often the "services are unavailable" (at least 50% of the time). The battery life is awful, I can't go a day without having to charge the phone. Call quality is alright, unless you decide to use the speaker phone and then it's muddy and difficult to use. The keys are really small, which was not terrible for me but still took a lot of getting used to. The camera claims to have a 2.0 pixel resolution, but my old LG Voyager took much, much cleaner photos. I'll admit having the mobile browser at my fingertips has been useful, as well as being able to access various videos via YouTube and such.
I'd wish that this wasn't my first Blackberry, as it's really soured my outlook on RIM and it's products. I've talked a few people out of getting this phone, recommending instead the Android phones. It's not so much the hardware as the software, which seems to be this phone's biggest fault.0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Cons: no camera flash
Summary: Great blackberry for those who want one that is more "rugged". It has rubber sides and is durable.

Smartphone? What a joke!
by Jermk on June 27, 2010
Pros: I honestly cant think of one good thing about this phone. Nothing, absolutely nothing positive about it. You might like it if all you ever had was some cheap flip phone but even that is a stretch.
Cons: Horrible apps, slow wifi (it says it has wifi but I think it's just a wifi symbol to fool you) - wifi downloading slower than 3g, bad user interface, goes thru a reset / update whenever it feels like it & takes forever to come back to life.
Summary: I wouldnt get another one if it were free. I dont know how Blackberry is still in business. I asked a techie friend why the apps were so bad & ...
Summary: I wouldnt get another one if it were free. I dont know how Blackberry is still in business. I asked a techie friend why the apps were so bad & he said Blackberry's app platform is the worst of all phones across the board. It's way outdated. Good luck Blackberry! Have fun capitalizing on all the first time smartphone users out there. My first Palm Trio (I think close to 7 years ago) put this 8530 Curve to shame.

Summary: If you want get a reason to blow your head off, get this phone. Believe me, after about a day, you'll be looking for a 44 magnum. In addition to the cons listed, the bugs include the first digit of dialed number not registering, so each call has to start over, often the symbols key will come up when hitting the back button, and then hitting the back button again will insert a symbol over and over until your head explodes... the trackpad is unusable, hitting the enter button when texting doesn't insert a line, but sends the text... THANK GOD I SENT IT BACK.
Verizon won't post my negative review on Verizonwireless.com. Shame on them!1 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.
