- The HTC Evo 4G is easily Sprint's best smartphone and one of today's top Android devices. It also shows the promise of 4G, which will grow as Sprint's WiMax network expands, but until there's broader 4G coverage, it's hard to agree with the mandatory premium data add-on fee.

HTC Evo 4G - black (Sprint) price range: $99.99 - $154.95

The good: The HTC Evo 4G delivered respectable 4G speeds, and the mobile hot-spot feature lets you connect up to eight devices. The smartphone has a front-facing camera for video chats and also comes with an 8-megapixel camera with HD-video-recording capabilities. The Evo ships with YouTube's HQ video player, Android 2.1 with HTC Sense, and an HDMI port. Other highlights include an extra-large 4.3-inch touch screen and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.
The bad: Sprint's 4G network is limited at this time, making the mandatory $10 premium data add-on tough to swallow for anyone outside of the coverage area. The Evo lacks support for Bluetooth voice-activated dialing. The battery drains quickly with 4G.
The bottom line: The HTC Evo 4G is easily Sprint's best smartphone and one of today's top Android devices. It also shows the promise of 4G, which will grow as Sprint's WiMax network expands, but until there's broader 4G coverage, it's hard to agree with the mandatory premium data add-on fee.

EVO is best phone I have had;
by metamatt--2008 on July 19, 2010
Pros: Large screen is important for email management; HTC and Sprint has worked out an excellent user interface. Also in my area cell towers are few and far between, the Sprint Airave is the best for giving me all five bars all the time in my office.
Cons: It might take years before 4G is available in my distrinct, but it is worth it even without 4G since all the other features are superb.

THE BEST I EVER HAD
by pya404 on July 12, 2010
Pros: EASE OF USE IS SO AWESOME. FAST DOWN LOAD SPEEDS, THIS PHONE KEEPS ME FROM CARRYING A LOT OF EQUIPMENT. TOP OF THE LINE FEATURES

Summary: Yes I can complain about battery life, but thats with every phone i have ever had. I love this phone so much I sleep with it, wake up in the middle to play with it. It was love at first sight.
My last few phones was a Mogul the Touch Pro, then Touch Pro 2. I Loved each phone until the next one came out.
Every feature that was important to me has been made easier to manuever on the evo 4 The way I can manage text messages and visual voice mail is awesome. From deletion to locking message. Same with email. Screen is so enjoyable to watch you tube, which I use to research anything at the drop of a dime.Internet speeds are fast especially opening up a attachment,
The fact that I can use my rhapsody subcription on this has made it an instant
Mp3 player which I use with my stereo wireless headset or through my car speaker, ..sounds and plays great with EASE OF USE!
I am a real estate agent, camera and camcorder is all I need to post a house... emailing pictures is a PIECE OF CAKE., and they are so clear. Video phone is great to give an online tour via QIK.COM..
The phone is also used to enter homes via lockbox. So I dont need a camera anymore, a lockbox key, a GPS, Mp3 player and my small notebook computer. Oh dont let me forget the data card which always needed to be replaced for $100.00 a pop. Hot Spot will take care of that.
the feature I like the most is that I can send the caller who left a voice mail a message back to their voice mail without speaking to them. Slydial is missing me.
the games are awesome and I am 58 years young Take your time learning the phone, before you dog it out. I Learn something every day. At first I thought I was going to send it back because I was not use to the Android system. Watch every video and read forums. You will learn something everyday.
Sprint you can offer me a job I will answer any questions on how to operate this phone. I can do commercials for you and sell more phones than best buys or radio shack. I LOVE THE EVO. and stood on line to get it ( a 1st) (and last)
I was reluctant about signing a 2 year contract, but this phone is worth it. and I havent even set up my hot spot.nor my sling back to watch my DVR on the phone via a computer with the proper cord.
Sprint I am proud of you for this one. Plus your customer service has even gotten a little bit better. Hope these two years is not painful2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

EVO is great
by Sammrgirl on July 12, 2010
Pros: Does everything I need and more.
Cons: Battery could be better, but there are tricks to manage this effectively. Control background updates, use App Killer, and turn off radios when not needed. Yeah, it requires additional awareness but the trade off is better battery life.

Summary: First I want to enter a rant about reviews of monthly cost comparison and 4G availability. They compare the Sprint Everything plan with other carriers Everything plans. Unless you call land lines a great deal, you don't need an Everything plan. Sprint minutes are free to every other mobile phone. I have a family plan with 1500 minutes (least minutes you can get on Family) and use less than 450 minutes with FIVE users, three of the users don't have landlines so that is their only phone. Sprint has a 450 minute plan with unlimited data and texting for 69.99 - 79.99 with the EVO. If you throw in the Hotspot option that is 109.99 per month, and you could possibly drop your home broadband service.. As to 4G availability, I live in a 4G city. Still use 3G most of the time because of battery life. 3G is still super fast. 4G is icing on the cake.
Now for my thoughts on the actual phone. I have had it since launch and absolutely love it.Admittedly, I am only an average net user but enjoy the knowledge it is there anytime I need it, for as long as I need it. I also purchased an external battery charger, for the rare times I didn't have access to a charging source. So having a dead phone is never a worry.
I am retired and use the phone as a hotspot for my laptop when traveling. Being connected at all tmes is wonderful, especially when traveling alone. I experience about one dropped call per month. Usually from the same spot in my home. I have earphones in my purse to use for surfing, TV, or games while I am waiting for car service, dr appts, etc. I sometimes read or listen to a book on my phone. No more outdated magazines or TV that does not interest me while I am waiting.
The size - being older, the eyesight is not what it once was and I love the big screen. You can visit a website and actually read the text, especially if you pinch, not to mention how fast the sites load.
The Apps - 70,000 and increasing daily. Love the barcode scanner. Scan the barcode of an itiem I am intersted in and see internet prices and reviews while I am in the store. Instantly know if the item is for me, or if it is a good price. Out and about, decide to go to a movie, check the local theatres for movies, ratings, and showtimes. Hear a comment about breaking news, search the net and get the facts. Get hungry or short on gas. Check for options near me. Even an app for current local gas prices. The list is endless.
The camera/camcorder - take my grandson out for the day. Capture his expressions of wonder or what he is seeing and instantly email it back to his parents, so they can discuss it when he gets home. You never know when that special shot will happen. For those who say it is not as good as a stand alone camera. True! Also, nothing extra to lug around when you are trying to manage a toddler.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great phone, really poor battery, not very useful
by jfreak33556 on June 27, 2010
Pros: Large/bright/clear screen, fast internet, fast processor, Android operating system, good email/calendar integration with Exchange, great integration with Gmail, camera, video. Google maps, Google Navigation, Google Goggles, and other applications.
Cons: Battery, battery life, battery usage, all things battery

Summary: This would be a great phone, except that the BATTERY LIFE IS SO BAD that the phone is just not very useful for a business application. If you travel with this phone, stay near a power source! It's a really good toy for the teenagers, but as a serious work phone, the extremely poor battery life makes this more frustrating than worth the effort. My phone is being returned to Sprint.
Yes, I've read all the power-saving recommendations. If I disable all the "smart" features of the phone, such as disable 4G, auto-synching of email, WiFi, bluetooth, and kill all the background applications, it's true that the battery life is acceptable. At this point though, this is just a phone and has no advantage over my Blackberry curve. The potential appeal of a phone like this is to be able to use all the features and be able to be more connected or get work done without dragging out the laptop computer. Regardless of the people who say they can get 16 hours out of the phone with moderate use, the battery life is much worse than the reviews sound.4 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Best phone I have used period!
by indyssd on June 16, 2010
Pros: Screen size, it's super Fast when opening apps. 8 MP camera takes sharp beautiful pictures, the second smaller camera takes pretty good pictures too. Mulitasking and total customization of most aspects of the phone.
Cons: None so far, I am already used to battery issues on phones like these thanks to my iPhone (home charger, car charger, work charger, battery pack), I will just have to upgrade all my chargers for this new phone.
Summary: I left an iPhone 3G for this phone and do not regret it one bit.

Exactly What You Need!
by aesierra7 on June 12, 2010
Pros: Very snappy hardware. Screen is amazingly awesome, very crisp and clear. Plenty of apps to choose from. Battery Life is pretty good, since I began using task killers.
Cons: The background tasks are horrible. Its good that there are task killers to ultimately save you battery life.

Summary: Bottom-line When I had the Pre I was so happy with something compact and sexy. But the Evo 4G is such a better build quality and overall specs are amazing. It's big, very big, but that is something that well makes it stand out. Both cameras front and rear facing are pretty good. Video is very clear and its not like I'm going to film a movie with it so it does what it needs to do. Coming from the Pre I miss the dedicated ringer/vibrate switch but I've gotten use to that. Kick stand comes in handy when you just want to rest it somewhere since if you lay it flat on its back you could possible scratch the lens on the rear camera. So if there is anyone wondering if they should get this phone...the answer should be yes. Its very well built and quite frankly awesome overall.

My Evo ate my friends iPhone...
by dantastic23 on June 11, 2010
Pros: So many Pros! FAST. SMART. The touchscreen is incredibly responsive. Startup is a lot faster. The 4G speeds I have not yet experienced and I am still extremely impressed with the functionality. I use the wifi hotspot for my iPad and its great.
Cons: Talking with it to my ear can be uncomfortable at times. I just haven't found the right way to hold it I guess. I think it is my ears fault to be honest.
Summary: I wouldn't have had it any other way. This phone is lightning fast and super efficient. I would recommend to those I am closest with and I already have. ...

Great job HTC and awesome job Sprint! I finally have a phone that I am proud to own!
Oh... the kickstand - while you wouldn't think would be too useful - comes in very handy!2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Better than the iphone!
by ArtZuh on June 10, 2010
Pros: Screen, operating system, processing speed, possibilities
Cons: Battery life could be an issue, but definitely competes well with iphone battery life, and has major option lacking in iphone -- get a back up battery!

Summary: I've used an iphone for the past two years (most recently, 3gs). What interested me, frankly, was the amazing low monthly contract price for 4G service. So I was expecting to give up some iphone glitz to save more than 100 per month per month on phone charges (made possible by integrated mobile hotspot on the Evo -- I can toss the $60 per month mifi).
But I am feeling zero "no iphone" pain. This thing rocks. The big screen is awesome. The browser is awesome. The processor is snappier than iphone, and even on 3g this thing can do amazing stuff (life watch TV for instance?).
The best part is the openness -- tons of interesting apps on Anroid market and also -- yeah! -- I feel like I'm out of the Apple ecosystem prison. Apple's refusal to play openly in order to protect simplicity and market share -- and charge you more for being in the closed system -- that finally just started to irritate the crap out of me. Android is wide open and it's a refreshing experience. Every time I read a story about someone who couldn't get their app approved I felt like I was living in a Soviet gulag. Go to a Sprint store and play with one of these things and check the contract price, you'll be amazed.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Simply Amazing
by terra4mer on June 8, 2010
Pros: Large, vibrant screen, 4g speed, 8mp camera, very quick response (probably the most responsive screen I have ever used), fast processor, great speaker phone. The battery life is better than expected!
Cons: Thickness and weight; not bad but not great.

Summary: I was hesitant to purchase this phone after I was sucked into the hype of the Palm Pre. However, HTC has a good track record as does the Android operating system. Not only did I bite the bullet, but I gnarled it down and cant be happier. This phone is just awesome. With all of the amazing features this phone has to offer, its close to becoming my portable multi-media player, which means my iPod Touch may find its self on Craigs List or Ebay.
I use this phone for work and receive tons of emails with attachments. It opens up PDF files and other MS Office docs quickly and is easy to read.
I have played around with the video camera and the quality is not bad. The camera might not be as crisp as it should be considering its 8mp quality. It feels like there are working parts in the phone when zooming in on your subject. I cant say much more, however. I have not had a chance to mess with this area of the phone.
Overall, I'm miles more satisfied with this phone than I was with Palm. 4g is ffffaaaaasssstt!2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: HTC
- Part number: APA9292KT
- Description: HTC EVO 4G delivers a robust list of features, including a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor ensuring a smooth and quick user experience. With dual cameras - an 8.0 megapixel auto-focus camera with HD-capable video camcorder and a forward-facing 1.3 megapixel camera - HTC EVO 4G unleashes the ability to create, stream and watch video that far surpasses expectations of what is possible on a phone today. With built-in mobile hotspot functionality, HTC EVO 4G allows up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices to share the 4G experience. Users can easily share an Internet connection on the go with a laptop, camera, music player, game unit, video player, or any other Wi-Fi enabled device. With integrated HD video capture and 4G speeds, HTC EVO 4G makes slow uploads and grainy video a thing of the past. Now, it is possible to post high-quality video to YouTube or Facebook, or share moments in real time over the Internet live, via Qik. After these videos have been captured, it is easy to share them on an HDTV via an HDMI cable. The custom Web browser is optimized for HTC EVO 4G's large display. Adobe Flash technology ensures that rich Internet content, such as embedded video and animation, are displayed the way they are meant to be seen. Pinch-to-zoom and automatic text reflowing provide easy Web page views. HTC EVO 4G features the highly acclaimed HTC Sense user experience. Along with all of the HTC Sense features first introduced on HTC Hero, HTC EVO 4G adds a number of features, including friend stream, which aggregates multiple social communication channels including Facebook and Twitter into one organized flow of updates; a "Leap" thumbnail view to easily switch between home screen "panels; " the ability to download new, interactive widgets; and a "polite" ringer, which quiets the ringing phone once lifted up. HTC EVO 4G, the world's first 3G/4G Android handset, features the iteration of the increasingly popular Android platform. Leveraging the Android 2.1 platform, HTC EVO 4G can deliver a wide array of useful features. In addition to today's Android apps, the performance of which will be enhanced by 4G speed, application developers will be introducing apps that take advantage of 4G power in new ways - games and communications tools and other apps that bring together video, presence and location simultaneously, and capabilities that haven't yet been imagined. For example, an application developer might create an app that allows a customer to simultaneously watch a streaming sporting event while pulling down stats and conducting a video chat with a friend.
