- The HTC Evo 4G is easily Sprint's best smartphone and one of today's top Android devices. It also shows the promise of 4G, which will grow as Sprint's WiMax network expands, but until there's broader 4G coverage, it's hard to agree with the mandatory premium data add-on fee.

HTC Evo 4G - white (Sprint) price range: $99.99 - $149.95

The good: The HTC Evo 4G delivered respectable 4G speeds, and the mobile hot-spot feature lets you connect up to eight devices. The smartphone has a front-facing camera for video chats and also comes with an 8-megapixel camera with HD-video-recording capabilities. The Evo ships with YouTube's HQ video player, Android 2.1 with HTC Sense, and an HDMI port. Other highlights include an extra-large 4.3-inch touch screen and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.
The bad: Sprint's 4G network is limited at this time, making the mandatory $10 premium data add-on tough to swallow for anyone outside of the coverage area. The Evo lacks support for Bluetooth voice-activated dialing. The battery drains quickly with 4G.
The bottom line: The HTC Evo 4G is easily Sprint's best smartphone and one of today's top Android devices. It also shows the promise of 4G, which will grow as Sprint's WiMax network expands, but until there's broader 4G coverage, it's hard to agree with the mandatory premium data add-on fee.

Summary: I just switched to the EVO from owning an iPhone 4 on AT&T for 8 months. I must say that I have NO regrets! The ONLY thing where the iPhone is superior would be the battery life, but once I get an extra battery for my EVO, that won't be a problem. I love the customization on this thing and I am saving SO much money compared to AT&T's plan and I get more features! OH! And since I rooted this beast, I can cancel my internet provider since I get FREE Wifi Tethering thanks for Android. I'm in love!

The only thing keeping me with Sprint

Compared with the Droid X from Verizon they're almost identical in appearance and sharing screen sizes.
The WiFi "Hotspot" works just like a regular home modem would. It would show up in your wireless networks, you have to call and have it put on your plan before you can use it. And you have to set up your own name for the WiFi and optional security password in the "Hotspot" menu.
This phone may be bulky to some (especially with the added more powerful battery which will come with two expanded back covers in black and white) but for some, (like me) the bulkiness is a handy touch.
The EVO can be considered business-like along with the iPhone, (the EVO's screen is larger hehee). With an added handy rear kick stand makes this phone presentable on a table and/or used for viewing videos.
I'm a photographer and I use my EVO for my most recent works. It's the best I've seen on a phone so far.
This is the best phone I've had and I don't plan on getting rid of it until it either breaks or something better comes out in the market.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Internal memory problem is an absolute deal breaker
by CJHardbody on March 9, 2012
Pros: Big Screen
Kickstand is handy
Ability to switch batteries and swap out memory cards is great
Transferring files from my computer to the device (vice-versa) is snap
I have Sprint service and it is a great phone for phone calls.Cons: The internal memory capacity is paralyzing.

Summary: I have 120 apps on my phone. A modest amount. Some apps cannot be written to the memory card so it must be store on the internal memory and it fills up very, very fast. Updates require memory space and items will not update if you don't have enough internal memory so you are stuck in this horrible uninstalling/updating circle. I'm constantly deleting my browser cache and maps cache to free up space. It is a massive pain. A few of the manufacturer installed apps are written on the internal ram and cannot be uninstalled. I have at least five apps that I have never used that are sitting there wasting valuable RAM-Estate that I cannot uninstall.
You have been warned. DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I bought the EVO for my wife and daughter. I am amzed with it. I had the iPhone 3GS and i then got the iPhone 4. ThiEVO phone is 3 times the phone compared to Apple's best phone. I have complete phone envy for I use my phone constantly for running my business. The Andriod apps seem much better than Apples. The interface for working the overall phone is better as well. But what is vastly superior is the blaxzing fast speed of this phone over iPhone 4. I like the look of thie EVo as well. But I am one of the few that liked the iPhone 3GS look and feel over the my iPhone 4.

Summary: This phone is amazing. I bought it back in November of 2010 and I still love it! So many games to play for whenever I'm bored, and many applications. I loved my Blackberry ( at times still miss it ) but this phone is awesome. I used to have an all touch screen phone and I hated the time it took to text, but this guesses your word right on 99% of the time. My phone calls are never dropped, and the internet always works. I rarely turn on the 4G, but the 3G runs perfect. I suggest that you download "Advanced task killer" just so your battery doesn't run out as quickly. The "kick-stand" sometimes fails at working. Also sometimes the phone will freeze up and just stop working all together. I've also had some troubles where it'll just type it's own thing... creepy. But all in all this phone is amazing.

I have a love hate relationship with the HTC EVO 4g.

Summary: If you're looking for a phone that allows you to have tons of apps, DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE. I only have 25 apps on my phone that aren't "bloatware" and I have to manage my internal memory daily to stay under the 500 meg limit. YES! I said 500 meg. You can have a 32 gig SD card and it makes NO difference. HTC has known about this for 2 years and there's been NO fix. I suspect it can't be fixed. Plan on buying an external battery charger and a couple of extra batteries. I recently went on a trip that took just over 8 hours. I went through three fully charged batteries and by no means used the phone too much. Yes....the HTC EVO is the first phone to have HDMI out, but you can only use it for youtube videos or video's you have stored on the memory card. You can't stream Netflix through HDMI out. Strupid! Like I said, I have a love/hate relationship with this phone. It could have been an amazing phone. I just can't understand developers that would think, with all the technology available today, that 500 meg of internal memory would be sufficient! Again, buy this phone knowing it's MASSIVE limitations!

Catastrophic Internal Memory Problem

Summary: BTW - The HTC Sync tool has totally screwed up my Outlook contacts, creating dupes and corrupted phone and email listings within the contacts. It is a far cry from the Blackberry or Palm syncs I've used for years. My hesitance with switching from my Blackberry was that any new phone must do the email, texting, and phone calls at least as well as the Blackberry, plus run fast without technical problems. The Sprint HTC EVO 4G unfortunately has failed in this minimum requirement. The worst part of it is that my iPhone friends are laughing at my decision now.
The phone is slow and the internal memory fills up and I cannot do anything about it. I've moved all the apps that the phone will allow to the SD card. I use the crappy, featureless Mail App to constantly delete email to free up space. I also clear the cache constantly. Nevertheless, the problem is getting worse and worse. I restart the phone almost daily, but that does nothing now. Then I saw this on the HTC support page from two other users http://community.htc.com/na/htc-forums/android/f/94/t/13927.aspx - there has been no reply from HTC because I suspect that the internal memory problem cannot be fixed. This leaves me with little hope and I'm unable to upgrade to another phone without shelling big $ for 260 days!

Good WHEN it works....
by ChicagoSandy on September 21, 2011
Pros: Big display, fast speed, keyboard feedback, great apps, kickstand
Cons: Constant freezes and spontaneous reboots, very spotty network coverage with many dead zones even in large cities, too many layers of menus

Summary: I had high hopes for the EVO 4G, since I was very unhappy with the erratic performance of the Palm Pre. I need three ISPs because of all the traveling I do, especially to very small towns and rural areas where internet coverage is spotty and lodging w/o internet access. But Sprint's coverage is the poorest--in fact, I find coverage dropping out as I drive around my own densely populated part of Chicago (a real annoyance when streaming live audio in the car). So I got an iPhone 3GS for accessing AT&T and eventually bit the bullet and bought a Verizon Mi-Fi pocket hotspot--I hate their customer service, but they provide internet access in areas that Sprint & AT&T forgot.
Sprint's coverage issues aside, this could theoretically have been a great phone: big bright display, responsive onscreen keypad & keyboard, good sound, copious storage, fast response in areas of Sprint coverage, but for one increasingly annoying problem: it occasionally freezes (requiring battery removal and reinsertion) and CONSTANTLY spontaneously reboots, seemingly at the most inopportune moments. The reboot system sound, BTW, is very loud and sounds like the Twilight Zone theme and often wakes me up in my hotel room (can't silence it because then I wouldn't hear its alarm in the morning). This has been going on for months now--Sprint has replaced the battery and reset the phone several times, and new iterations of Android haven't corrected the problem. It's especially annoying when I'm driving, because streaming audio drops out (besides the "dead zones" issue) and when I try to place calls or pull over to use apps the phone becomes unresponsive and then reboots, often multiple times over the course of several minutes. I know what you're thinking--but no, I don't have a lemon. There is a huge long thread over on the EVO 4G users' forum of people with EXACTLY the same problem, even after they've been given multiple replacement EVOs from Sprint. I don't know if it's an HTC issue or the nature of the beast with Android, but it's a known issue and common problem. (Those giving this phone rave reviews...wait a couple of months......)
Specifications
- Manufacturer: HTC
- Part number: APA9292WT
- Description: HTC EVO 4G delivers a robust list of features, including a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor ensuring a smooth and quick user experience. With dual cameras - an 8.0 megapixel auto-focus camera with HD-capable video camcorder and a forward-facing 1.3 megapixel camera - HTC EVO 4G unleashes the ability to create, stream and watch video that far surpasses expectations of what is possible on a phone today. With built-in mobile hotspot functionality, HTC EVO 4G allows up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices to share the 4G experience. Users can easily share an Internet connection on the go with a laptop, camera, music player, game unit, video player, or any other Wi-Fi enabled device. With integrated HD video capture and 4G speeds, HTC EVO 4G makes slow uploads and grainy video a thing of the past. Now, it is possible to post high-quality video to YouTube or Facebook, or share moments in real time over the Internet live, via Qik. After these videos have been captured, it is easy to share them on an HDTV via an HDMI cable. The custom Web browser is optimized for HTC EVO 4G's large display. Adobe Flash technology ensures that rich Internet content, such as embedded video and animation, are displayed the way they are meant to be seen. Pinch-to-zoom and automatic text reflowing provide easy Web page views. HTC EVO 4G features the highly acclaimed HTC Sense user experience. Along with all of the HTC Sense features first introduced on HTC Hero, HTC EVO 4G adds a number of features, including friend stream, which aggregates multiple social communication channels including Facebook and Twitter into one organized flow of updates; a "Leap" thumbnail view to easily switch between home screen "panels; " the ability to download new, interactive widgets; and a "polite" ringer, which quiets the ringing phone once lifted up. HTC EVO 4G, the world's first 3G/4G Android handset, features the iteration of the increasingly popular Android platform. Leveraging the Android 2.1 platform, HTC EVO 4G can deliver a wide array of useful features. In addition to today's Android apps, the performance of which will be enhanced by 4G speed, application developers will be introducing apps that take advantage of 4G power in new ways - games and communications tools and other apps that bring together video, presence and location simultaneously, and capabilities that haven't yet been imagined. For example, an application developer might create an app that allows a customer to simultaneously watch a streaming sporting event while pulling down stats and conducting a video chat with a friend.
