The good: The HTC Evo Design 4G has an understated black-on-black design, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and two cameras, and is a world phone. It comes with 8GB of memory preinstalled.
The bad: The stubborn back cover is hard to remove and the speakerphone could be better. A dedicated hardware shutter button wouldn't go amiss.
The bottom line: The HTC Evo Design 4G gives you a lot of smartphone for a good price--fast 4G speeds, a good camera, a strong processor, and a sophisticated design. It's an excellent choice for Sprint customers, except those who are specifically looking for a dual-core phone.

Great when it works. Nightmare when it doesn't (often)
by WoolAmoeba on July 16, 2012
Pros: The phone operates well:
The screen is responsive
Layout of everything is very natural
Easy to useCons: Lots of people I know who have these experience frequent freezing after calls that can only be remedied by plugging the phone in or by taking the battery out to restart it. It would also experience "unexpected shutdowns" on average of once a week

Summary: Honestly, when the phone works, I like it a lot, and have no real complaints with its successful functioning. I just wish that it functioned at least as often as is doesn't. When things to finally come to a head and you decide to get it worked on, you're in for a real treat! HTC's customer service was actually fairly good, but the issue is that you're going to be without a phone for a MINIMUM of two weeks, which is a fairly substantial hassle. There are a very few Sprint stores who are kind enough to provide loaner phones when shown an RMA, but the vast majority don't, and they're process is a sodden mess. You give them your phone, wait forever, and in the end they'll probably issue you a new phone, or your old phone with some new parts in it, though, you'll have to wait a few days for that too. For this kindness they charge you 35 dollars. Admittedly, 35 bucks isn't an outrageous sum, but it is when you think about the fact that Sprint sold you a defective product, and now you're paying to replace a phone you did nothing to break, so that you can continue to access the services (i.e. phone/text/data) that you were going to be paying for while you waited for your phone to come back to you had you decided to send it back to HTC. It may just be me, but I think it's pretty bad business to charge your customers for your own company or the faults of your suppliers.

Fine mid-level smartphone.
by highlander2000 on December 18, 2011
Pros: Wonderful screen. Responsive touch features. HTC sense. Processor rarely if ever stutters. Call quality (I/O). Decent camera. 4" screen is just the right size. Phone feels SOLID. Connections (BT/3G/4G/WiFi) without a hitch. Elegant design.
Cons: Phone is too tall + slightly thick. Battery capacity/life - be ready to charge daily. No cover for micro-USB or 3.5mm audio. Earpiece could use more volume. 8 GB sd card + 768 MB RAM - much prefer 16 GB sd card and 1 GB RAM in this day and age.
Summary: Well-designed smartphone that could use some trimming, a stamina boost, and more integrated and insertable capacity. However, the price is right at $99 after $50 mail in rebate.

A lot of HYPE for such a piece of garb!
by EuphoricFusion on December 12, 2011
Pros: Was shipped with an 8GB SD card installed.
Has an LED that can serve as a flashlight.
Has a (albeit shabby) front-facing camera for video-conferencing.. although I returned it before using it.
Sized for smaller hands to hold it securely.Cons: When charging and actively used, the back plate gets hot enough to make you drop it. Do not let children near it in this situation.
The changing or adding of ringtones is 1000x more complicated and less functional than the old one I was replacing.Summary: I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy. It provides the basics of all the HTC EVO line, but when troubleshooting, I found that this DESIGN was a 'special' ...
Summary: I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy. It provides the basics of all the HTC EVO line, but when troubleshooting, I found that this DESIGN was a 'special' EVO that lacks the features of all the others. I am unsure how they get away with calling it EVO, despite its being a Sprint phone.
The camera was ridiculous, and worse than my 1.3mp on my 3 year old Samsung. Each time I aimed at a subject, the window would blur and clear repeatedly, and any captured images came out blurred. I understand a 5mp isn't going to give me 12mp quality, but it should be better than the 1.3 I had.
When syncing my contacts, it duplicated every single one that was in my Gmail account and phone, and refused to offer an option to Merge them - which I was TOTALLY surprised by! I had to go through 480 contacts and "Copy/Paste" the email info to the phone contact info and delete the duplicate. Sigh. Three hours of wasted time, since I returned it gleefully in less than a week.
Also annoying - Finding that none of the problems I was having, despite being all over the InterWeb as commonly occurring issues, had any solutions.
I am not a Tech-Genius, but also far from novice, so was truly and wholly disappointed by this device. I can't wait to try the LG Marquee next!1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

JUNK! What a nightmare, freezes up all the time
by Northvillelady on April 10, 2013
Pros: Good functionality when it works
Cons: This phone freezes up at least once a day, often more. I have to take it out of its case, take it apart, remove the battery. If I'm in a hurry and need to use my phone, too bad. What a piece of garbage. I will NEVER buy an HTC product again. JUNK!

So far this phone hasn't failed me yet!
by TattooedMommy on September 9, 2012
Pros: Fast working, great signal, WiFi hotspot works, great screen, rear camera/flash works well, easy to use, layout allows many widgets/apps to be easily accessible, great weather graphics, great speaker, keyboard first I can use without stylist etc....
Cons: Cannot turn off factory unlock screen have to swipe then put in pass code just to unlock phone. Front facing camera not very good (haven't seen a phone with a good on yet though),zoom sucks, charging battery every night (have had worse)
Summary: This phone is pretty simple to use. It is fast, reads touch well, keyboard is first I can type on without hitting another letter every time I go go type ...
Summary: This phone is pretty simple to use. It is fast, reads touch well, keyboard is first I can type on without hitting another letter every time I go go type something. It has a beautiful screen which displays great colors and graphics/photos. Layout of apps/widgets it nice, many screens you can put shortcuts/widgets on. Runs smoothly when playing video or animation of any sort. Keeps signal and 4g. There have been a few quirks I get annoyed with (lock screen being worst) however with all the great features I can deal with a few annoyances with no issue. Camera is great, however you must understand sometimes manual focus is needed, camera likes focusing on nearest object not great facial recognistion but all you have to do is tap screen on what you want to focus on and it corrects itself, or sometimes if you press and hold snap button it will auto focus on the main object instead of closest (only time it hasnt worked for me is taking very close up pictures. Has many features you can turn on and off, can put up app to turn off and on WiFi hot spot and 4g to help save battery. All around great phone I am happy with so far...no major issues yet and haven't had any of the horrible cons anyone else has listed...and if you could turn off the swipe screen so you just had to put in pass-code would have given 5 star...not price is a little high but yay store credit so got it for half price.

Email accounts w/ IMAP prefixes--stay away!
by white_n0ise on June 10, 2012
Pros: Surprisingly quick.
Touch Screen is bright & fast, great resolution.Cons: NATIVE EMAIL CLIENT DOES NOT WORK W/ IMAP prefixes.
Low RAM
Not dual processed
Low Battery lifeSummary: It's the IMAP prefix thing that's a killer for me. I don't feel like having to route my business email through Gmail or use 3rd party apps ...
Summary: It's the IMAP prefix thing that's a killer for me. I don't feel like having to route my business email through Gmail or use 3rd party apps like K9, MailDroid, etc. Mostly because then conversation "threading" isn't available i.e. the native contacts, message, dialer, and email are designed to "thread" all communication--which is exactly what I need. Not using this phones native email app leaves emails out of all contact threads--not acceptable. For more detail, here is the note I sent to HTC about it:
As I thought, using IMAP prefixes are not supported. with their version of Android ICS firmware. They suggest using a 3rd party app, but ignore that this doesn't allow email to be threaded with other communications across the device:
I have an HTC Evo 4g Design. It is running Andoid 4.0.3 While setting up an email account using the stock pre-installed email application (NOT Gmail) there is no way to include an IMAP prefix to accounts. (Such as "MAIL or "INBOX", which are very common) If an email account has an IMAP prefix associated with it this will cause multiple folders to appear in the native email application with the prefix attached as well as default Inbox, Sent, etc. folders (such as folders: INBOX.Sent, INBOX.Drafts, etc..) Furthermore, sent mail is defaulted to the default native software created folder "Sent" and does not sync via IMAP with the actual email account server folder. Therefore no messages sent from the HTC phone appear on the server email account and are not synced across devices. Incredibly. there is not even a way to designate through your interface which folders to use as a default folder, which several 3td party mail applications do to get around this issue without using an IMAP prefix.(This is not a great solution from them, but it works.)
Notably, Motorola--which uses Android of course--has an "IMAP Prefix" field in email account settings, logically. This has apparently been a problem with HTC phones for YEARS (2009?) as I can glean from the web. This a continued major oversight. Is their a way to address this? Are you even addressing this? If not, I will be returning this phone and making it clear that it's native email software (which very importantly, native contacts, dialer, & message programs thread to) cannot setup IMAP email addresses that have prefixes, like almost all other smartphones can, i.e. Motorolla, Samsung, Iphone, etc. Without the ability to use your native email program the usefulness of this phone drops dramatically, as I cannot easily thread conversations form contacts across email, phone, sms. I have proprietary email accounts for a reason: security. Therefore, having to route my email through a Gmail account is NOT an option and should not be even considered as a "solution" .
Updated on Jul 2, 2012
"I realize how important it is to use and have the configurations available for your preferred email accounts. I see you are in need of an option for an IMAP prefix. I definitely understand your need to be able to adjust this setting, and apologize that it is not available in the default mail set up. There is not a setting or a work around within the application that will allow you to set the IMAP pre-fix. I apologize that this is not available. While I realize a third party application is not the solution you prefer you may find one in the Playstore that will allow you to set your Imap account up with the pre-fix you need. Please accept my sincerest apologies for not having a setting available for an IMAP prefix in the default mail program." -
