Motorola Defy (T-Mobile) price range: $5.99 - $148.99

The good: The Motorola Defy is tough enough to withstand everyday hazards with its tough Gorilla glass and rugged exterior. Features include a 5-megapixel camera, a music player, Wi-Fi calling, and GPS, and it ships with Android 2.1. Call quality is excellent.
The bad: The Motorola Defy doesn't take very good pictures and its rough-and-tumble aesthetic isn't for everyone. We also wished we didn't have to activate the Motoblur account to use the phone.
The bottom line: The Motorola Defy is a great midtier Android smartphone, especially for those who need a phone to be a little more protected against life's everyday mishaps.

Tough & durable
by Billm261 on January 6, 2011
Pros: Tough, Durable, Build Quality, Great Signal , Wi-Fi calling, slim and comfortable to hold. Nice screen resolution.
Cons: Nothing really to complain about

Summary: Like it's cousin the Nextel/Boost i1 this little baby has eased my worries against drops, screen scratches and daily mishaps that I so often cause. I'm tough on a phone and this phone is designed to take it. The Gorilla glass used on the display is a smart idea. I know so many people who have scratched and broken their phones display. The ability to withstand a little bit of water is also great.
Although not 100% to mil spec, it should serve those that are rough on phones well.
Features are abundant as with most Andriod OS and there are tons of apps in the market for it.
The ability to make calls over Wi-Fi is a saver and the only way that I can use T-Mobile's service due to the reception in my house. This phone does however show a bar or two of signal in places I had none with other phones.
Many complain about not being able to remove pre-installed apps but that's the way with all stock Andriod devices. The Defy is no different. Yes, you need to sign up for a Moto Blur account, no big deal. Sign up and forget you have it.
It's a perfect size, light weight and very comfortable to hold in your hand. Call quality is excellent.
I would recommend this phone to anyone looking for a mid tiered handset and especially to those that would like some degree of durability.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great phone with one downside...
by Chaos-Katie on January 4, 2011
Pros: Great user interface, easy to navigate, sleek design, durable, awesome reception/call quality and an insane amount of apps.
Cons: I only have one gripe about the phone, you cannot remove the pre-loaded apps. Period, end of story...found this out today while trying to figure out how to remove the apps I will never use.

Summary: Bottom line is I love this phone but I think it's extremely irritating that I don't have a choice over what I have loaded on my phone or don't after purchased. I am not a social networking person, I don't belong to facebook, myspace or twitter and don't ever plan on it. So I should be able to remove all the social apps off my phone since it's creating a lot of clutter and I'll never use them. There are also a ton of gps type apps (approx 5), you should be able to pick one or two and then remove the rest. Other than that it really is a great phone. They should make that known before purchase as well. You can alter the phone to remove the apps by going into the "root" but you void the warranty which comes with if anything happens to it.
So this phone turned out to be a major POS. Endless problems with and you cannot rely on it for anything, especially when you really need it. It constantly hangs and freezes up, the touch sensor is not all that accurate or precise, sometimes the power on/off button will not work and it has issues with many android apps. I have been through 4 or 5 SIM cards, for no reason the SIM card will just stop working and you can only make emergency calls (AWESOME - a smart phone that can't even operate as a PHONE). I have already replaced the phone once within the one year warranty and the new one is having similar issues already. They get really hot when they are not even being used, I'll pull it out of my purse and the battery will be hot as well as dead (even though an hour earlier it was fully charged). It's like WTH is it doing? I'm not even using it!

Bottom line, don't spend your money to get this phone. It's really crappy and frustrating to boot.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This would be an awesome phone . . . if it worked without any glitches. I went through three of these. The first one worked fine the first four months or so until I threw it across the room (in a fit of frustration after arguing with my ex). Physically, there was no damage to the phone or the screen, but it began freezing up. Insurance allowed me to get a replacement.
The second one worked fine for six months before it started freezing up too. Very frustrating if I needed to call someone right away or needed directions/map immediately. I would have to either wait until it was ready to respond, or pop the battery out and re-start. Usually the latter since it was faster. Ocassionally it would lose one of my contacts. I complained to T-Mobile and again they replaced it.
I couldn't believe they sent me a phone that was obviously used. It was dirty and still had someone else's contacts and pictures in it. I immediately returned it and complained. They sent me a new one in a sealed package. This phone also worked fine for the first six months, and then it too started acting up, freezing or crashing. It would sometimes just reboot itself up for no reason at all.
Over all I really loved this phone because it survived so many drops, coffee spills, dog teeth, and just generally would take a beating. At 4" x 2" it's the perfect size for all kinds of pockets (including hiding it in my bra) without sticking out or being obvious. When it worked, it worked wonderfully, but when it didn't, the frustration and inability to use it when needed, just gave me a headache. It's as if someone put a lot of thought into the design in the beginning, but then abandoned it when they got bored with it. -
Phone is rubbish!
by Whirlwind112 on March 2, 2013
Pros: Android and Swype are excellent.
Cons: Had to be sent back due to "blue tick" coverage issues.
Had to be sent back a second time because you could only hear a call when it was on loudspeaker! (Old ladies at shops really loved that)
Has developed hazy blue line permanently in the screenSummary: Phone freezes and battery has to be removed to restart it.
Did I mention it only has a 12 month warranty?

Compact, Lightweight, Rugged, and easy to use
by ERT_Medic on April 3, 2012

Summary: Great phone, well designed, durable, lightweight, and reliable. Downside is that the camera takes not so well quality photos but the Froyo update helped alleviate that issue somewhat. The processor and memory is pretty damn good when compared to similar phones and the battery life is way better than most its competitors. The great upside is that it's one of the few phones left that will fit in your jean pocket without hindering your walk. And it's one of the few phones left that won't let you feel like you're carrying a brick. I liked this phone so much I got 2 of them just to make sure I'd still have a good compact phone to use in case cell phone companies keep making their phones bigger and bigger. I have 2 tablets so I don't have the desire to utilize my phone as a tablet because it's inconvenient to haul it around every where.

I hate this phone
by McKennasMama on March 23, 2012
Pros: I love the fact that its water resistant. Ive dropped it in the bathtub numerous times and still works normally afterwards.
Cons: It constantly forces closes, the GPS drops constantly, It freezes all the time, drops calls, shuts off on its on, the camera quality is horrible.
Summary: I wish I never would have purchased this phone to begin with. I have had 3 exchanges and all end up working the same way, like crap.

Slow, unresponsive and wished I bought an iPhone!
by Mattldooley on January 21, 2012
Pros: strong, robust hardware - like a brick
Cons: Software is slow. Takes 3 mins to make a call. Screen is unresponsive so can't accept a call. Screen res is great but cant do basic function. Ive tried emailing their support team but no reply. Ive definitely bought my last Motorola.
Summary: Don't make the same mistake as me and but the Motorola DEFY - you'll regret it.
