The good: The Motorola Defy is tough enough to withstand everyday hazards with its tough Gorilla glass and rugged exterior. Features include a 5-megapixel camera, a music player, Wi-Fi calling, and GPS, and it ships with Android 2.1. Call quality is excellent.
The bad: The Motorola Defy doesn't take very good pictures and its rough-and-tumble aesthetic isn't for everyone. We also wished we didn't have to activate the Motoblur account to use the phone.
The bottom line: The Motorola Defy is a great midtier Android smartphone, especially for those who need a phone to be a little more protected against life's everyday mishaps.

Great Phone Does Everything I Need It To

Pros: lightweight, durable, small, fast, Android OS, T-Mobile network, DLNA, GPS very accurate, speaker is LOUD, reliable

Summary: First I'd like to say I was an early adopter to the entire Android platform coming from a G1. This phone fulfilled all my expectations and made up for all the shortcomings of the G1. Before I made the decision on buying this phone I spent a week with the MyTouch 4G before returning it for this. The MyTouch is an outstanding phone don't get me wrong but it just wasn't for me. I found the Mytouch to be too big and heavy and thought I would break it if I dropped it.
I was tempted by the front facing camera which I came to the realization that it would never get used. I've already dropped the Defy multiple times with no issues. Don't be fooled by some of the specs this phone is fast. After coming from the rooted G1 I was also skeptical on the entire Motoblur interface. I really don't see what the big deal is that you have to make a free account through Motorola and deal with some different icons on the screen.
If you really don't like the look of it try LauncherPro. If you are new to the Android platform don't worry, if you don't like the way something is on the phone there is probably a free application to download that will function the way you want.

Summary: The smartphone has finally taken on the personality of a Rolex watch. I can take this compact, light weight, and excellent phone on my motorcycle -- rain or shine -- snowboarding, etc. Though it's being reviewed as a "small phone" it's display is actually larger than an iPhone. 4G means nothing to me as I travel in Europe a lot, but the wi-fi calling means I can now make calls from my cell, in Europe, and as long as I am on wi-fi, those calls and text messages come out of my normal plan (so, generally "free"). The 2.2 OS also means nothing to me, besides, not only does it run just about everything out there, well, there will ALWAYS be a new OS to chase. You chase it. I'm going snowboarding.
I've lived with this phone since they became available and I still love this little monster. I have had zero issues that I didn't sort myself in a few minutes. I have dropped my Defy several times on stone floors without so much as a scratch. The wifi-calling, thought still not as good as UMA, is a huge feature. When I'm over-seas all I need is a wifi connection for free calls. This phone goes with me on my motorcycle and snowboarding. I love the big screen and the slim size. Very underrated. Believe me if I had something bad to say about it I would... but I love it.

Updated on Dec 14, 2012OK, nearly a year later -- since I added to review -- and have been tempted by Samsung G3, Nokia 810 etc. But I really dislike how huge these phones have become and, so far as the G3, on T-Mo it has been having tons of wifi-calling issues... whereas my little Defy not only pops right into my shirt pocket, but works perfectly. Still. Even running the original battery. I can use wifi-calling to make and receive free calls all over the world, to my cell number. Just cannot find a reasons to "upgrade"... unless being cool is a smart reason.8 out of 11 users found this user opinion helpful.

Pros: Perfect size to fit in Work Uniform. Camera not as good as Nokia or as easy to use, but compared to the HTCs and Iphones I tried it works great. Just point and shoot.

Summary: For years I have had (and destroyed) many Nokias. The last was a N97 mini, and that was the straw that broke the camels back. From poor reception compared to virtually every other phone I or my mates have (regardless of where I held it) to crap batteries, the only thing that Nokisa seem to have now is better cameras. I am a Heavy Mechanic and tracel all over Australia and Overseas, so I wanted a Smartphone that "just worked", but it seems that so many manutacturers are so interested in packing so many features that they just forget that people actually want to use these phones on a daily basis too. Enter the Motorola Defy. The first thing that caught my attention was the waterproof and heavy duty build, it has to be a plus..... but a few minutes with the phone in my hand and I had to have it. I get great service everwhere my N97 didn't, and now that I'm getting my head around the Android system it gets a bit easier everyday. I do wish that the camera was a bit easier to use, but you have to remember that it is a water resistant phone, so it can't have a million buttons. Touch screen is the best I have tried......still miss the tactile buttons, time will tell, but if you want a phone that is a bit more of a allrounder it looks like this may well be the one. Battery life seems to get nearly two days which is a bit better than your average smart phone. For $600 bucks outright from Telstra it seems the perfect compromise for a real persons mobile phone. If it continues to be reliable it might even sway a few other iPhone and HTC users. Ultimately I care very little for Brand names and must have cultures, just give me a damn phone that works.........................

Pros: Durable, fast, light, good looking, bright LED flash and flash light, loud, wifi calling, advanced motoblur and mulitasking.
Cons: Needs the upgrade for android and I kinda miss the roll button on the bottom. The location of the SD could have thought out better as well.

This is no mid range phone. This phone is durable and the batter is pretty good (smart phone good). This phone is way under rated. Let me say this about Moto Blur. Fantastic. I really thought it was going to bog down my phone like it did on the click but it does not. The widgets are great for motoblur and it really enhances the android experience. Really give this phone a good look.

The "Unbreakable Phone" broke in less than 20 days.

Pros: Waterproof. Battery life is decent. Processor is relatively quick.
Cons: Most importantly, this phone's screen cracked 18 days after I bought it. I plugged it in to charge and when I unplugged it, a large crack had appeared across the bottom of the screen. It was not treated violently in any way.

Pros: From what I hear, if it works it's a nice phone... but mine doesn't work.
Cons: Multiple defects:
Cracked screens
Earpiece Malfunction
On/Off switch malfunction
Headhone jack malfunction

Summary: This is my first smart phone and although I'm pretty good at figuring out electronics...this did take a bit of getting use to. The phone is sturdy, fast and surfs the internet just as fast as the ipad. Call quality is excellent. My only issue is with texting. With my old craptastic Nokia I could text at blazing speeds. I find that texting on this is a bit more difficult and if you care about spelling can be a bit of a nightmare. For a first smart phone I feel like I hit the jackpot. It might just take me a little while to find out just how much gold is in that pot though. So far...I couldn't be happier. Compared to my brother's iphone....this is cheaper, smaller, faster and does just about everything his can do.

Pros: I love this phone more each day! The 480x854 display is better than Vibrant or G2 at 480x800. Durable design, perfect size, lightweight. Didnt like being forced to set up Moto-blur! I keep that stuff off, so the phone runs smooth. Nice phone!
Cons: No choice about Moto-blur. Had to set up an account before using the phone, had to set up WI-FI after a million attempts, because info would not go through? Had to restart the phone a few times the 1st few days, but now its running smooth, perfect!

Summary: Great phone, beautiful display, decent speaker, smaller than Iphone but screen is slightly bigger. Unlike Iphone, you can move files as you wish, no Itunes crap! I easlily moved a few gigs of music, and a couple of movies to the phone. The mp3 player works well and sound quality is good. I ripped a copy of Avatar for the phone and it played back awsome with good sound, like a mini movie theatre. The camera takes good pictures and the video quality is good too, just remember its a phone, not a Canon. The GPS works good- its not a Garmin, but it works. The touch screen is smooth and responsive when surfing and worked well with the games too. Phone call sound quality is very good and the speaker phone works great! I am very happy with this phone so far, I am able to mold it into what I want it to be, and thats a good thing!
