The good: The Motorola Droid 2 sports a sleeker look and an improved keyboard. The smartphone also features a faster processor, double the RAM of the original Droid, and ships with Android 2.2.
The bad: The Droid 2 doesn't have a front-facing camera and Android 2.2's new camera interface. It lacks HDMI port. Though the keyboard is better, keys are a bit stiff to press.
The bottom line: The Motorola Droid 2 offers a number of improvements that make it a worthy upgrade from the Droid and certainly a top choice for those who want a smartphone with a physical keyboard.

Good computer -- needs work to be a good phone
by QuantumSam on August 19, 2010
Pros: Apps are great. Touch screen and buttons work very well.
Cons: I wish the microphone on the phone worked -- can only talk to people if I use speakerphone. This is a problem for many Droid 2 and Droid X users.
Summary: I wish Motorola would improve their quality control. I expect a phone, whether a smartphone or otherwise, to at least work as a phone. I used to have Motorola products ...
Summary: I wish Motorola would improve their quality control. I expect a phone, whether a smartphone or otherwise, to at least work as a phone. I used to have Motorola products that could survive abuse. My Droid 2 couldn't survive manufacture. The microphone does not work unless I turn on the speakerphone -- that is 100% unacceptable.

Not fit for sale

Summary: Avoid until they actually make it work. They just released an update. Some of the "improvements" will make it less dysfunctional, but had I been traveling when global voice to data reset hit, I would have been furious, As it was, the screen UI freezes, intermittent touchscreen unresponsiveness, noises in silent mode, and inability to last a work day in passive mode make calling this a "mobile phone" a fraud. It is at best a transportable toy. As a serious user I am insulted that they thought this could actually be suitable for me. To add insult to injury, they charged $35 to "restock" this piece of junk and reactivate my old phone. They marked the return "didn't like touch screen". So I guess this won't show up in their data base as a "defective". They are either behaving fraudulently by restocking a defective unit, or unethically by purveying such a piece of junk as suitable for purpose.

Good solid phone to stay connected with.
by UXguy on December 5, 2010
Pros: Speed - especially in WiFi mode, fast fast fast
Touchscreen controls - intuitive and well designed.
Android OS - Exceeded my expectations.
Onscreen typing - Better than expected. I bought this phone for the slideout keyboard and I never use it.Cons: Sometimes my thumbs are too big - my problem, not yours.
Can't power on the phone if it's charging - Kind of annoying but not a dealbreaker.
Call quality - could be better (but still beats my last 2 textphones).Summary: I was upgrading from LG EnV and I spent close to 6 months researching my next phone. Let me preface thsi review with the fact that I hate having a ...
Summary: I was upgrading from LG EnV and I spent close to 6 months researching my next phone. Let me preface thsi review with the fact that I hate having a cell phone sometimes-- another gadget in my life-- and I didnt want to get a "toy" but my EnV was dying. I knew I didnt want to get on ATT (iPhone) and honestly Ive used the iPhone in testing and it doesnt impress me. I will soon begin building Android handheld apps as part of my job so I knew I had to get one. Was offered a good deal from Verizon on a special unlimited data plan b/c I've been off contract for almost 1.5 years :-) so I bit- never been happier. Its like having a miniature superfast extension of my laptop in my pocket.
I'm actually getting nearly 4 days out of a charge now, averaging about 3-5 calls a day, 5-7 IMs and 10-20 min of game playing/web surfing. DEFINITELY train your battery for the first 2 weeks-- well worth it. Also- found out that even tho you can't turn on the phone immediately while charging from an absolute dead, you can turn it on after the phone has had time to charge up a little. Advice: GET THE HARD PROTECTIVE CASE. It's like a circuit breaker for bad drops. Last week the phone slipped out of my grip and hit the floor-- the plastic covering took the hit and busted, which prob saved my phone which is unharmed. Well worth the $15.
There are a lot of amazing (and FREE) apps that sync to your laptop in so many ways it's astounding. Android blows the iPhone away, and you cant beat Verizons coverage. The apps moreso than the phone are what makes my life easier, so many of them tie into my MacBook Pro and in general theyre useful. Android really is a great new OS, and the more tech-savvy you are the more you can get out of it. Things like Gmail, Googletalk, Google maps, etc are built right into the OS as stand-alone apps, which makes them super fast and right there when you need them. Also- on Android your contacts are one consolidated contact list of all of your contacts from all phone, mail and social networking sources connected to your phone, which is VERY HANDY.
I got the hardshell case and screen protection, I dont notice them anymore and this thing can take some knocking around in my laptop bag.
I got the Droid b/c previous touchscreen keyboards that Ive used never impressed me and annoyed the sh*t out of me. But the one the Droid 2 offers is so responsive that I rarely use the physical slide-out keyboard unless I'm composing a longer email. The physical keyboard is fine (not as good as my EnV's!) and some of the top-row keys near the edge of the slide are hard to press dead-on with my big fingers. Again- since I dont type with it much, it's not really an issue.
The WiFi works very much like a laptop. It remembers wifi networks and connects automatically if you're in the vicinity of one. This thing screams on wifi. Faster than my MacBook.
Ive read some issues about smartphones and battery life being short. Once I read somewhere that if you "train" the battery initially the right way, it will have a longer time between charges, and so I did this with this Droid 2 from the beginning. Not sure if it's true, but for the first two weeks I would let it drain to shutoff and always charged it to full. If it wasnt drained before I went to bed, I would run the Droidlight app until it ran that sucker dry. Result: I now can get 2 full days out of a charge if I need to, with regular use checking my email and playing games on my commute each day. If I have an exceptionally long phone call or excessing messaging here and there that of course brings it closer to 1.5 days. ( I used to get almost 4 days out of my EnV, ugh.) Still, not like the half-day drain that I've read about in some reviews. Seriously, I dont know if this is BS or not but that is what I did and this is what I got. I still say, break in your battery the right way and you'll be fine.
If youre looking for a fast smartphone that ties into your laptop, work, calendar, various email accounts, Facebook, etc, going Android will change your life, and this phone is a GREAT device for getting you there.

This Phone Is an AWESOME upgrade to the original Droid!

Summary: I just switched to Verizon after being a long time T-Mobile customer. Loved the customer service, but the all-important cell service SUCKED. Decided to try the original Droid on the 10th, and apparently was under a rock somewhere, because I didn't know they were releasing the Droid 2 2 days later. Paid my $35 exchange fee, and haven't looked back since!
I came to this device after being a self-professed HTC FANBOY, and must say, I never knew I was missing so much. While HTC Sense is an AMAZING overlay, they leave MUCH to be desired in technical design. I love the design of the Droid 2 and X. Something about them just screams, these are MEN's PHONES! The fact that I can go an entire day of use and not have my battery die sometime during the day is FANTASTIC!
I was worried when I heard that the phone came with MOTOBLUR, having seen how much it SUCKED on T-Mobile's Moto droids, but this version is great, and you can always add LauncherPro or ADW Launcher.
I've had this phone for about 3 weeks, and the ONLY thing I can think negatively about is how bulky this is with the protective case.... But that is HARDLY a con. If you're in the market for a top of the line Android device with a sliding keyboard, get the Droid 2.... You won't regret it!2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

A good working phone the majority of the time
by pommer299 on January 13, 2013
Pros: Great selection of apps, browser speed is usually fast and YouTube videos load and play without much issue. The interface is user friendly for the most part.
Cons: I have had three of these phones now and each time I encounter a problem of screen freezes and apps opening up without being told to, its an issue that gets progressively worse over time to the point where it no longer can operate efficiently anymore
Summary: Overall the phone is best described as decent. Having had two replacements needing to be sent at this point one could understand why I'm not thrilled about this phone ...
Summary: Overall the phone is best described as decent. Having had two replacements needing to be sent at this point one could understand why I'm not thrilled about this phone and won't be sad to stop using it when my plan is up later this month. While it does have several pros that I listed, the cons of the system just malfunctioning constantly just makes it frustrating to use and overall makes you fed up with it often. The battery runs out extremely fast and you have to recharge it at least once during the day even if you have it charging during the night. Overall there are far better phones out there for the same price point.

Droid 2 died 2 months in. Replacement died.

Summary: My wife's Droid 2 died two months after we paid $300 for it. Verizon replaced it with a refurbished phone. That one died just out of warranty. Verizon told us we would need to pay $200 for an upgrade. We threatened to cancel both of our phones. After an hour of yelling on the phone with various managers, they finally agreed to replace the second phone with a third refurbished phone. Verizon and Motorola suck. As soon as our contracts are up, we are done and we are writing to the BBB. Verizon: Shame on you for crappy customer service and crappy, unreliable phones.

TERRIBLE. Just missed a phone interview because of it.
by chrisbh90 on May 22, 2012
Pros: Turn-by-turn GPS is awesome (after it stops "searching for satellites", of course).
It's a great phone for texting because of the keyboard.Cons: Sometimes it plain old doesn't ring when I get a call even with 3G and 5 bars of reception.
When it does ring, the screen freezes so I can't answer it.
It switches my contact names and phone numbers.
The screen does not work if there are ANY smudges.Summary: I have had 7 of these phones in 16 months, ALL due to mechanical failure. I have asked Verizon for a new phone several times but there is always a ...
Summary: I have had 7 of these phones in 16 months, ALL due to mechanical failure. I have asked Verizon for a new phone several times but there is always a technicality in my phone plan that blocks me from getting one. Or they offer me another Droid 2. Today was the final straw. I waited for a phone interview, and after 20 minutes of no call, I opened my phone. It restarted itself, and when it turned back on I had a message from the recruiter... womp womp. If I did not need the phone for calls tonight, I would have smashed it right then and there.
If I could give the DROID 2 a worse rating, I would. I hope that no one is subjected to the abysmal travesty that is this Motorola monstrocity. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PHONE.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Constant annoy problems, great when it works.
by meganbug on April 30, 2012
Pros: I love the apps, I love how smart my phone can be. I love that, as an 18 year-old, it can keep up with me. I use it constantly.
Cons: I hate all the problems I have. I have glitches all the time and Verizon is a piece of crap service that won't help me at all.
Summary: I love how smart this phone is, but it doesn't outweigh how annoying all the stupid glitches are. I am ready to throw it out the window and then ...
