- Melding an excellent keyboard, swift LTE data, and a 1.2GHz dual-core processor into one Android device, the Motorola Droid 4 is long overdue. Fans of the first Motorola Droid will find plenty to smile about here, but those who aren't married to a QWERTY keyboard may not enjoy carrying around such a massive phone.

Motorola Droid 4 (Verizon Wireless) price range: $9.99 - $99.99

The good: Motorola's Droid 4 shows that a dual-core, 4G LTE Android slider phone with a QWERTY keyboard is possible. With fast data speeds and a great typing experience, the phone also serves up pleasing call quality over Verizon's network.
The bad: By bartering its powerful components and swift data radio for a chassis of considerable size and heft, the Droid 4 proves that life is all about making trade-offs. It lacks the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, and its LCD screen lacks the oomph of AMOLED.
The bottom line: Melding an excellent keyboard, swift LTE data, and a 1.2GHz dual-core processor into one Android device, the Motorola Droid 4 is long overdue. Fans of the first Motorola Droid will find plenty to smile about here, but those who aren't married to a QWERTY keyboard may not enjoy carrying around such a massive phone.

Summary: Ive heard that the camera is very high in quality. Ive heard that the full qwerty keyboard is great to the touch. And the most reason I want this phone is because I HAVE TO HAVE A FULL KEYBOARD. Plus, I want the touch feature. Is there any phone that youd recommend with touch AND full qwerty physical keyboard? Ive heard that the battery life is ok, not as good as the Droid Raxz Maxx, but it is alright. Ive heard that the screen isnt as clear as people want it to be. Is it as clear as the iPhone 4S?? Somebody give me more facts of the D4 please and other suggestions for me! I want to have a Droid or any kind of Smartphone please! And i DO NOT LIKE THE PHONE WITH A TINY KEYBOARD AND HALF A TOUCH SCREEN! (Usually blackberries) Plus I need the company to be Verizon!) Thank you!
Please help me out!

Great tech specs but one annoying design flaw.
by GrafZeppelin127 on February 11, 2012
Pros: Fast, feels solid, nice screen, great QWERTY keyboard. Huge improvement over awful Droid 1.
Cons: One incredibly annoying and mind-bogglingly stupid design flaw: Placement of headphone jack makes it uncomfortable to type on QWERTY with headphones plugged in.

Summary: This is a terrific phone overall and a worthy replacement to the utterly awful Droid 1. It's lightning-fast compared to the old Droid, has a nice screen and terrific specs. Does everything you'd want an android phone to do.
But there's one irritating and unbelievably stupid design flaw that's almost ruining the experience for me. The headphone jack is right next to the keyboard; on the lower half of the left side of the phone when held with the keyboard open, instead of the upper left corner like on previous Droids. This means that when you try to type, your left hand runs right up against the protruding headphone plug. You can try typing with the plug between your forefinger and middle finger, which is the best option I've found, but it's still not quite right. It just seems incredibly dumb and careless to put the jack there and nearly ruin the phone's single most important and notable feature.
Of course, you can avoid this by getting a Bluetooth stereo headset, but those are expensive and need to be kept charged. I have one but it doesn't work very well. It kills me that a phone I've been waiting for for a long time would have a ridiculous design flaw like this.
If typing and listening to plugged-in headphones is not an issue for you, this phone seems almost perfect.
I haven't really had an opportunity to test the battery life or the GPS navigation functionality; the store didn't have the car mount yet. Overall I like the phone a lot; I'll have to take the 14-day return period to see if I can live with the design issue.1 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Another Motorola phone that could have been great.

Summary: Motorola seems to have a history of taking solid hardware and then ruining it with awful software and terrible decisions. In this case, the terrible decisions are having a non-removable battery (which might have actually been forgivable if it was more like the RAZR MAXX at 3,000 mAh) and the locked bootloader.
Under heavy use, this phone will only last a few hours if you're lucky (not unusual for an LTE phone) and, unless you're at a charger, you're done. You cannot easily replace the battery. No upgrading it. No swapping it out for a fresh battery. What happens when your battery stops working entirely? You have to either send it in for a "refurbished" model, a "repair", or void your warranty by taking your phone apart and replacing it yourself (provided you can actually find a replacement battery).
This could have been one of the greatest phones ever made if Motorola had not made such a terrible decision with the battery. I really wish Motorola would just put out another phone that was more like the original Droid: Hardware camera button, unlockabe unencrypted bootloader, and best of all: stock Android! That is the phone that saved Motorola, I don't understand why they don't repeat that success.0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Piece of Junk
by Dragon3463 on March 26, 2012
Pros: the camera is all I can say
Cons: Where to start? Hmm, my wife had it a month and from the moment she took it out of the box, had nothing but trouble out it. Frequent crashes, restarts, freezes, the list goes on.

Consistently good update of hardware
by williamjeffries on February 11, 2012
Pros: 1. Huge Screen 2. Quick tap to Camera from lock screen 3. Generous keyboard
Cons: TERRIBLE Unlock/Standby button, hard to recognize its there and now when you push it, non-removable battery makes it hard to upgrade battery size, strange interface with the "dock", permanent buttons at the bottom of gingerbread
Summary: Great phone, a true successor to the original Droid. will get even better with Ice Cream Sandwich
