TOO GOOD SMARTPHONE, VERY CAPABLE AND A IPHONE "KILLER"
by Qorax1 on September 14, 2009

-Good Looking [head turner]
-Great memory [16 Gb]
-Quality shooting (pics & vids) [3.2 Mp cam]
-Lovely music [+good online store]

-Value-for-money [low priceCons: No Cons, believe me...

I purchased the 5530 a few days back. Black/Red model. Used it vigorously and let me assure you that it is a "fantastic device", a charm to interact with AND definitely an IPhone KILLER!
Besides having all the bells & whistles (the specs. are available in every site, so technicalities avoided here & speaking of ground realities) it's a thriller phone, which is capable of doing everything that we need / look-for in today's mobile phones. It's thrills are in: a) Super-Slim body, b) deadly user interface, c) great shooting capability (both pics & vids), d) top-of-the-line music quality, e) No 3G (its's a boon, it made the phone slimmer & most of us do not need 3G, WiFi being enough) AND e) Amorous Price Tag.
Dear IPhonites, my Nokia 5530 beats you guys all the way thru (I do own an IPhone and am done with it). Why shell-out that dough? The 5530 is better (cheaper) having all it's functions and upscaled! (16Gb card, 3.2Mp camera, good stocked nokia music store that is cheaper than ITunes ...etc.
LAPTOP INTERFACE:
A nice factor of the 5530 is it's ease at managing thru the laptop. There is a cool USB Cable (in box) that connects it with the laptop and thru the OVI Suite (DvD in box) I have downloaded / uploaded all the files (pics, vids, music, contacts, messages and touched every part of the phone, arranged them, modified them without any qualms at all. And the Vids shot looked good too, contrary to what others say.
Overall, I am deeply satisfied with this lovely product. It's getting rave reviews too from my pals & colleagues. And my wife adores it. What more do we need?
So much so that I have put-up my Black IPhone 2G 8 Gb for sale / Gift, rather than getting the new 3G model. Mainly because I never needed 2G / 3G capability during my 1 yr. of usage (Wi-Fi being enough) and I do not wish to shell-out further (and huge) amount just to get more memory. Note, IPhone doesn't have secondary storage capability (Micro SD cards, like the 5530). And then IPhone's cam (2 Mp) is also well beaten by 5530 (3.2 Mp).
PHOTOS:
I say, "the 5530 cam is good enough". The pics are absolutely stunning. Though low light is a bit wanting, so does all camphones. And IPhone was poorer. The pics shot with my 5530 were flawless even when blown-out in my 42" LCD TV. Thus, I do not see the requirement of 5 MP & more cams in the other models. Vids were good too, for a phone shot. Better than lots of other smart / camphones. And then, for a dedicated movie shoot I do not see the usage of a phone. We would rather use our camcorders, no? I do so with my JVC HD-7 (another great FHD camcorder, whatever the websites say, it beats all. -No, I am not dwelling on it here further).
END NOTE:
I find the 5530 a wholesome package, fully loaded smartphone, too good for its price tag. And well above the requirement of any other present models, including the other Nokias. It is beyond value-for-money. Actually, the Nokia pricing is a surprise, they could have easily priced it higher.
COMPARISONS:
I have, as you see above, compared the 5530 basically with the IPhone. As that seemed to be the most "wanted phone" by everyone. I have also compared the 5530 on ground with Nokia 5800 (which is good, but bulkier and not as smart looking as the 5530). This phone [Nokia 5530] is "Classy". And again compared it with similar models of LG, Samsung, HTC and Palm, while doing my market research for an IPhone replacement. I found all the others were "very similar" to the Nokia 5530, Albeit at a "heftier price", which to my opinion, is a pure farce. If Nokia could do it, sure can others. That prompted me to assert that the other brands are "not selling right". Which is why, I definitely advocate the Nokia 5530. It is the Best in the market.
FINAL SAY:
Thus, my friends, I say, "Go for it... now", before the 5530 is sold out of the market; or Nokia re-thinks on it, takes-it of the shelf and brings-out a modified 5530 with another name (model no.) & higher price tag.
I HOPE THE ENTHUSIASTS GET MY POINT.

Amazing number of functions for such a small device.
by jekeith on January 19, 2010
Pros: This is my first 'smart' phone. I bought it at Costco for $150 unlocked. I have been wanting one of these since the iphone came out, but was not willing to pay the price or switch from TMobil.
Cons: The only thing I wish it could do is pull in more than one personal email address. I have several, and have to manually change them in order to view incomming mail.
Summary: Aside from the email limitation, this device is a winner. I would buy it again. I probably wouldn't pay full price, but Costco's price of $150 after rebate ...
Summary: Aside from the email limitation, this device is a winner. I would buy it again. I probably wouldn't pay full price, but Costco's price of $150 after rebate puts it within my budget.
There are many free apps at Nokia and Google (Google Maps is great and functions as a GPS even though there is no receiver on board. It uses the nearest transmitter to locate you and has all the functions of the full Maps program on your laptop. I use it to find restaurants, etc., nearby.)
The bluetooth function allows me to pass files, etc. between the phone and my pc as well as connect with my car speakers.
I bought the phone from Costco thinking that if it wasn't what it was advertised to be, I could take it back for a refund. I'm keeping it.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

I want to throw this against the wall
by Clockmocker on May 12, 2011
Pros: touch screen works nice
easy to text
music quality is good enough
voice quality is acceptable
message storage at least up to 1.2k messages
internet is good
downloadable apps and gamesCons: this phone has broken on me 4 times, all with replacements
phone turns off mid conversation during call
occasionally freezes while switching from vertical screen to horizontal screen
updates made phone carrier's plan almost disappear-gives a error sayingSummary: This phone is not worth it. I am finding myself frustrated often at it. The only reason i continue to use it is because i do not have the money ...
Summary: This phone is not worth it. I am finding myself frustrated often at it. The only reason i continue to use it is because i do not have the money at the moment to get a different one.As i stated in the cons, more times than none it has turned off mid call saying it is low battery, even though it is plugged into the charger. If you have many applications installed it will slow down your phone. It will also drain your battery. I have updated it in the past(which speeds up menu transition time adds a gps) and it only resulted in a loss in carrier call coverage. Overall this phone is not very good, with its only advantages being wifi internet and its touch screen.

It is a good machine indeed, offering many PC features
by Danail7 on July 23, 2010
Pros: Good slim design, can be upgraded with up to 16 GB of memory, can play both audio and video, the headphones that come with it are excellent.
Cons: The single huge problem I have with this phone is extremely super low battery life, also has easily breakable covers, a software update made the phone unusable.
Summary: The 5530 is an expensive, yet very functional. The biggest thing I like about it is that I can bring all the stuff I need in my palm. I have ...
Summary: The 5530 is an expensive, yet very functional. The biggest thing I like about it is that I can bring all the stuff I need in my palm. I have a phone that has all my contacts stored, plays all my music and my favorite videos. Well encoding the videos to a state that can be played on this phone is a bit of a pickle, but with some research it can be done. I have a micro SD card of 16 GB and I can save all my pics, texts, songs and etc. The phone can read txt files, but the PDF reader requires payment.
A huge issue is battery life. If you don't use the phone it can handle 4-5 days, but if you watch a few movies/listen to some music you can drain it dry in less than 2 days. Furthermore the covers for the SIM, sd card and battery are quite fragile. The battery cover in particular can be broken by a not so careful user the very first time he takes it off. -

pretty nice smartphone and great value for money
by ms879 on March 18, 2010
Pros: really good looking
quite slim(compared to the nokia 5800)
great 360x640 display
crystal clear stereo sound
useful, small, nice and cheap in case of a replacement handsfree(3.5mm jack)
many applications
4gb memory card included
quite cheapCons: sometimes(but only a few)it gets stuck
its touch-screen is quite sensitive and requires in my opinion a screen protector(which is cheap though)(5-6 $)
doesn't have a free pdf reader and I haven't managed to get a full free version of pdf reader yetSummary: Overall I'm quite satisfied by my phone. Its sound is perfect and me personally haven't heard better sound than this from any other mobile. When I play big ...
Summary: Overall I'm quite satisfied by my phone. Its sound is perfect and me personally haven't heard better sound than this from any other mobile. When I play big videos it might also get stuck at times.
If you want to spend about 200-250 dollars then it's a really good idea. But just take care of it... -
It looks like a good phone, but it's not sturdy enough.
by 63242 on March 14, 2010
Pros: The features and size are just what I was looking for.
Cons: Flimsy sim card/memory card slot cover.

Summary: The sim card/ memory card slot cover broke the first time I tried to open it. Also, the battery cover is very flimsy. I need to be able to change the sim card frequently to get reasonable rates in different countries I travel to. That means that the battery cover and the sim card cover need to be opened frequently. From my experience, they are not sturdy enough to last under that kind of use. I was excited about the advertised features of this phone, but sadly I will have to return it.

Great value. Many features at a reasonable price.
by SteelSnail on March 2, 2010
Pros: TI OMAP Hardware inside.
Flexible stylus or finger touchscreen.
WLAN, BT, 3.2MP camera, great music player
Nokia suite is not as intrusive as iTunes
Got it for $250 and included a $50 gift card.
Vibration feedback to acknowledge certain actions.Cons: Out-of-the-box it had a mic bug. Update fixed it.
The headset has a tendency to entangle itself.
WLAN performance is less than espectacular.
Not clear when to click or double click.
Not fat finger friendly.
Defult gestrures can't be overwritten.Summary: Substituted both my ipod and previous phone and while camera performance doesn't match my non-SLR cannon it's pretty good.
The touchscreen is not as big but so is ...Summary: Substituted both my ipod and previous phone and while camera performance doesn't match my non-SLR cannon it's pretty good.
The touchscreen is not as big but so is the price. I got it early in December 2009 at $250 with an included $50 gift card. You can get it at around $220 at ebay.
I have no problem using the touchscren. I'd say I have proportional hands but I'm a 5'6 guy. I can picture big guys having trouble with the touchscreen.
WLAN performance is not good. Pages take some time to be rendered. Mobile specific sites work fine.
Thanks to the TI OMAP hardware the music playback+battery life is pretty good. I hooked up a Kensignton liquidAux BT device to my car aux audio jack and it works great. Much better than FM transmitted solutions.
Because it is a music oriented phone there is a specific icon in a pop up menu which I found handy.
I also like the way the phone notifies you of certain actions by emiting a slight vibration.
Some site critize the loose slide hardware button that rattles when you shake the phone but I rather have a HW locking button so I can clean the touchscreen without unlocking it inadvertedly.
Includes a 4GB mini-SD card that can be upgraded to 16GB.
The included headset has decent sound quality but has a nasty tendency to entangle itself.
Overall the phone covers my needs and that's what I was looking for. If you want a flashy fashinable and expensive phone look elsewhere. -
Pocket friendly music phone
by kaizeray on January 30, 2010
Pros: Sound quality, good screen, wifi, touch screen response
Cons: back cover, image/video quality
Summary: A great value for money considering most of its hardware capabilities are on par with n97 and with a much lower price.

SUPERB SMARTPHONE-BIG FEATURES IN A SMALL PACKAGE!
by daisy-kj on December 17, 2009
Pros: 1) WiFi connectivity
2) FM Radio
3) 3.5" headphone jack
4) Clear, vibrant screen
5) QWERTY onscreen virtual keyboard
6) Best of all SUPERB INTERNET BROWSER!
7) Phone works great on my T-Mobile Sim card.
8) Easy to learn, very user friendly phoneCons: Minor Cons:
1) Wish the screen was a little larger, however, the zoom feature is great in the browser.
2) Did not come with OpenOffice or Adobe Reader apps, cost me $30 extra to put these in the phone with Nokia Store.Summary: In the past I have used HTC Windows Mobile phones and loved the MS Office feature but hated the propriety non 3.5" jack and the lack of a FM ...
Summary: In the past I have used HTC Windows Mobile phones and loved the MS Office feature but hated the propriety non 3.5" jack and the lack of a FM Radio. And when I discovered that Nokia offered this unlocked model, I had to have it. Every feature of the phone I love! The only things missing when I started using the phone (2 weeks ago) was MS Office and Adobe Reader. So I went into the Nokia Ovi Store and downloaded them at a cost of $30 for both apps. Glad that I did because now I can open and edit Word, Excel, PowerPoint files with ease and even create new files. Also text files and of course PDF files. The PDF files are just to be read, not edited. But this is great because I like to look at PDF files in the phone computer just as I do on my desktop or laptop computer.
Now about the other features:
1) Hurray for: File Manager, Memory, YOU TUBE! And built in Flash Player. This phone lets you watch YOU TUBE with ease! And movie trailers! First smartphone that I owned that will let me do this! YES!!!
2) Easy Menus: You can arrange your menus (organize) the way you want and in the order you want!
3) Music Player: When you create a playlist, it tells you how many minutes or hours on each playlist! I saved a playlist with downloaded radio shows that was for 16 hours, how great for a trip! Sound is decent on music player, great with a quality set of headphones! Also, the FM radio has a great sound and I was able to get lots of stations that my desktop radio would not get!
4) Internet (WiFi) I was able to connect my home wi-fi in a couple of minutes and save it to the phone. And have taken to my phone several places with WiFi and connected with ease! Now the screen is small so I have to hold the phone in a landscaped position and also zoom, but now I am used to this and can read the screen well.
5) Size of the phone: This phone is very small, but not too small. I find that it is comfortable to hold and to place in my purse (I place it in a cell phone case).
6) Call Quality: I find that the phone's headset without the speakerphone is very easy to hear other people and they easily hear me. The speakerphone is just right, not too soft nor too loud.
7) Cost of the phone: Very reasonable for a smartphone that is unlocked with all of these features!
