Nokia E71x - black (AT&T) price range: $49.99

The good: The Nokia E71x is affordably priced and offers a long list of features, including 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a 3.2-megapixel camera, as well as support for AT&T's various services. The QWERTY smartphone is very sleek with high-quality construction.
The bad: The GPS initially took a while to find our location. The keyboard layout is somewhat cramped.
The bottom line: Affordably priced, the Nokia E71x for AT&T is an incredible value for business users and consumers looking for a robust messaging smartphone.
It's always been a shame that Nokia's E series of smartphones (as well as the Nokia N series for that matter) rarely make it to U.S. carriers since they offer great business features in slick designs. However, AT&T customers got good news at CTIA 2009 when the companies announced that the carrier would bring the Nokia E71x to its shelves.
Sharing the same design (though coming in a classic but sexy black color) and similar features as the unlocked Nokia E71, the E71x is an extremely sleek and messaging smartphone for business users. However, AT&T made an attractive device even more attractive by giving the Nokia E71x a $99.99 (with two-year contract) price tag. It's a great value, especially compared to AT&T's other QWERTY smartphones, such as the Samsung Epix and RIM BlackBerry Bold, considering what you get and the quality of the phone's design.

For this review, we'll be concentrating on the new features and performance. For more information on the Nokia E71x, including full details on its design, please check our full review of the unlocked Nokia E71.
As we noted earlier, the Nokia E71x's features are akin to the unlocked version, but it adds a number of AT&T services, including AT&T XpressMail, AT&T Navigator, Yellowpages.com Mobile, and AT&T Music and Video.
We tested the quad-band Nokia E71x in San Francisco using AT&T service and call quality was good. We enjoyed mostly clear audio during our conversations with just some minimal hissing in the background, and we did experience a dropped call. On the other end of the phone call, our friends reported no major problems or complaints. Speakerphone quality was decent with good volume.
The smartphone offers Bluetooth 2.0 with support for a number of profiles, including stereo Bluetooth, file transfer, object push, and dial-up networking. We successfully paired the E71x with the Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth headset and Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones.
In addition to being a quad-band world phone, the Nokia E71x also supports AT&T's 850/1900MHz HSDPA bands. Wi-Fi is also onboard as an alternative if you're out of 3G coverage. The 3.5G speeds made Web browsing fairly painless. CNET's site loaded in about 50 seconds, while ESPN's mobile site came up in 17 seconds, and CNN's mobile site loaded in 18 seconds.
General performance was good with minimal delays. We were also quite pleased with the multimedia experience. Tracks sounded rich even through the phone's speakers; we only wish Nokia had equipped the smartphone with a 3.5mm headset jack so we could plug in our own headphones. Video playback was smoother than other smartphones we've tested, with minimal blurriness and synchronized audio and picture.
The picture quality of the Nokia E71's 3.2-megapixel camera wasn't great. Though we were satisfied with the sharpness, the coloring wasn't very good, as it looked dark and orange.

The biggest hiccup we encountered with the Nokia E71x was with the GPS. Using AT&T Navigator, we tried to set up a route from CNET's downtown San Francisco office to the Marina District. However, on the initial try, the smartphone could not get a GPS fix and consequently could not find our location or give us a route. We were in an open area with a clear view of the sky on a sunny day. We tried for 20 minutes and even exited out of the application several times and restarted the phone to no avail, so we finally gave up for the day. However, the next day the smartphone was able to locate our position immediately and held its lock as we drove throughout the city. AT&T Navigator provided accurate directions, though slightly slow on the route recalculations. Yellowpages.com Mobile also worked as advertised, offering numerous business listings and their contact information, though we found that some of the search results were outdated.
The Nokia E71x has a 1,500mAh lithium ion battery with a rated talk time of 5 hours (GSM)/4.5 hours (3G) and up to 13 days (GSM)/12 days (3G) of standby time. The smartphone provided 11 hours of talk time in our battery drain tests. According to FCC radiation tests, the E71x has a digital SAR rating of 1.53 watts per kilogram.

Quality Smartphone for only $99 + compatible w/ macbook
by brunos82 on May 8, 2009
Pros: This phone's build is very solid yet still very light and thin.
Four shortcut keys on the qwerty w/ direct access to home/calendar/contacts/mail (very nice). Battery life (3 days no charge).
It feels 10x better to type w/ vs. the blackberry curve.Cons: Very petty but since something must go here:
-the side voicedial button is not customizable and since I don't use voicecalling it is pretty much useless
-I wish there was one button step to press in order to lock the keyboardSummary: Bottom Line: I cannot believe this phone is only $99 bucks. You should pick one up before Nokia figures out its phone is better than the competition that sells for $...
Summary: Bottom Line: I cannot believe this phone is only $99 bucks. You should pick one up before Nokia figures out its phone is better than the competition that sells for $200+ and change their pricing. For $99 bucks this phone beats most smartphones out right now! Wifi enabled, 3.2 megepixels, video recording/messaging, and overall design durability are unmatched for the price. If you are in the market for a smartphone you should put this one at the top of your list AND go try one out (beginner, intermediate, or advanced you will not be disspaointed).
Quick update for MAC users: you don't have to purchase the missing sync. Nokia offers a free plug-in that makes the E71x compatible with iSync. iSync works perfectly ! Don't waste the $40 bucks. Nokia also offers a software to transfer media and even transcodes it from itunes to realplayer/etc...
Excellent Call Quality and network coverage.
Additional:
Finding a phone (that I liked) that was not a blackberry and compatible w/ macs was challenging.
I don't want to pay a $30 monthly data plan because I don't all of that. And it is mandatory to keep that for the duration of your contract w/ the iPhone.
I tried the BBerry Curve, Palm Centro, Blackjack II, Samsung Impression, LG Xenon, and Blackberry Bold.
-Every one of these had a serious issue w/ either syncing w/ macs, serious network coverage issues, or OS crashing probs.
The Bold has a serious issue choosing poor 3G coverage over 5 bars on Edge.
After the hunt I can say this phone is earns 5 stars in every category people are shopping for. Yeah it might not be your powerful business phone if your a CEO but for the average busy person it is excellent.
It even speaks and tells you the name of the person who is calling!
I am military E7 and my organizer keeps me on time and my address book is contantly on the use. I couldn't afford the $30 w/ the iPhone but I can surely afford the $10 unlimited family data plan. Even w/o the data plan this phone meets all my expectations plus more.
I am extremely satisfied w/ my purchase.
-This Nokia is the best phone I've had in a long time. For the $99 I paid it is worth every penny.
-I purchased $40 missing sync and it syncs everything between my Nokia & macbook over bluetooth and does it flawlessly.
The organizer, mail/messaging, and contact features are the most important to me and this phone delivers.
It feels like someone has been listening to my gripes and put together this dreamsheet phone together just for me.

Updated on May 15, 2009It has realplayer loaded into it. I haven't tried any others but there are tons of applications for this phone via the Nokia website and the Nokia Beta labs all for free.
I am not sure what operating system you are using but if you're a PC than of course the Nokia has a CDROM that comes in the box. Not too sure about other OS's.
The Blackberry Bold is a powerhouse. If you buy it make sure you live in a strong 3G serviced area. Not sure if they've updated this problem but this is why I returned it:
I live in an area where Edge has 5 bars and 3G has 2 bars. When I had the iPhone I could toggle the 3G off when I was home.
The Bold automatically chooses 3G (if available even if weak) over the stronger 5 bars Edge.
Bottom line is I had no service at home when I knew perfectly well there was 5 bars with Edge available that the phone would not pick up.
If you are a heavy e-mailer you might consider a blackberry; but wait til this summer they should be launching a new Curve.14 out of 14 users found this user opinion helpful.

The best cell phone I have ever had...
by two_named_sue on June 21, 2009
Pros: Great 3.2 MP camera, sleek design, very comfortable key pad for texting, really good user friendly OS, large screen, tons of customizable features.
Cons: Honestly, there isn't much to dislike. There are some connectivity issues from phone to Windows XP computer using USB cable, but I think that's a software issue more than a phone issue.
Summary: The most impressive thing to me about the Nokia e71x is the camera. 3.2 Mega Pixels packed into a slim, attractive phone. Now I don't have to lug ...
Summary: The most impressive thing to me about the Nokia e71x is the camera. 3.2 Mega Pixels packed into a slim, attractive phone. Now I don't have to lug around a digital camera in my purse because it's already built right into my phone, and the pictures look really, really good for a cell phone. Some people can't even tell the difference when the Nokia e71x pictures are side by side with others I took with my Kodak Easy share digital camera. The second most important thing to me about this phone was all the customization options. Using Nokia PC Suite I can "click and drag" photos, videos, music, screen savers, ring tones, wallpapers, etc from my computer and then use them on my phone however I want. Sometimes there are communication errors between phone and pc using the usb cable in conjunction with the PC Suite software, but 1 touch picture transfer works perfect every time, making me believe it's Nokia PC Suite software for Windows XP that's the problem. This phone really feels like *my* phone because of all the customizable features. I did not see improvement with reception using this phone in comparison to my last phone, but I live out in the country where no one except All tell users seem to get any reception anyway. I did get the data plan with AT&T which costs an additional $30 a month, but I completely feel like it has been worth it. I have definitely used up that much in data just in the first two weeks of owning the phone. For me, the Nokia cost approximately $60.00 with a renewed contract with AT&T, something I also felt was well worth it. The phone is amazing. Best phone I ever had.

Very Nice Smartphone at an amazing price

Pros: Sleek, Slim, has 3g, wifi, bluetooth, gps, has a quick and smooth processing, nice and clear screen, and compatible with macs, decent camera and very good battery life.
Cons: Keypad is a little small, no 3.5 mm jack, few email glitches

Summary: Since purchasing the nokia e71x, I can say that I am very satisfied. The phone is slim but has a solid feel and has a good fit in the hand. I didn't want to purchase a data plan so wifi was a must. The phone has bluetooth 2.0 so I can use bluetooth headphones. There is a 2.5 mm jack which is a bit disappointing since the phone has some great multimedia capabilities. However, there are adapters so it's not too much of a big deal. The keypad is also a little small but the keys have a nice textured feel and each key rises in the center so it became very easy to get used to and to type proficiently. Software wise, the phone has symbian s60 which I think is a great operating system since it's open and easily customizable. The camera on the phone is 3.2 megapixel and has flash. If your outside or in a bright area, the phone takes great photos that are sharp and have accurate colors. At night, photos are acceptable thanks to flash. They do have a bit of a fade and the flash gives a bluish color but most phones take terrible pictures at night or dark areas anyway so you can't knock this phone. The phone also has gps which is a nice feature. The phone has att navigator but it will cost you since you need a data plan. To sidestep this, you can use google maps for mobile which is free and uses wifi to chart your position and gps to pinpoint where you are or you can use Nokia navigator which is also free and will allow you to use gps and to download maps directly to the phone so you don't have to be connected to the internet to plot the maps.
For email, the phone is capable but is not very efficient. I created an email inbox and am unable to delete it so that is a problem. However, if set up properly, it does work and it is easy to download attachments and view regular messages. Nokia also offers it's own email service called nokia messages which is very easy to use and set up. You can set the accounts on the computer and it will appear on your phone. It is a great service although you do have to pay for it. Besides email, the phone is able to sync with macs. There is a small file to download but after that, I was able to sync my contacts, my calender, and music. You can create a playlist in itunes and can set the isync software to sync that playlist making music transfers seamless. I also downloaded the nokia sync software for pc which is even better. You can connect your phone to your pc and type and send messages or copy information right on the computer. I use both a mac and a pc and being able to connect to both back and forth is extremely useful.
Overall, I think this phone gives any smartphone, including the iphone, and run for it's money. At $99 (or $149 if your upgrading without a data plan), I think the E71x is worth the money. The iphone may be better entertainment wise but the nokia is just as productive and costs much less if you look at initial price and the cost of data plans. I recommend this phone to anyone looking for a phone that has great connectivity and compatibility.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Very Capeable Smartphone
by scrtchmstj on June 16, 2009
Pros: Inexpensive, no data plan required, can run completely on WiFi, compact but easy to use, plenty of useful freeware tools online for symbian and java. I didn't like at first but now I love.
Cons: Default programs can only be deleted or moved using third party apps (like "xplore"). No 1/8" headphone jack. Cannot setup connection for 3rd party apps to ALWAYS allow connection. GPS is service and only available over connection.

Summary: I've really enjoyed this phone. I opted out of AT&T's data plan and I use only WiFi out and about and at home. Here are the free apps I use that make the phone a valuable tool:
1. Opera Mini & Skyfire - full scale webbrowsers
2. Gmail - Easily switch accounts and view, reply, and send emails
3. Quick Office - Included on phone, edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations
4. OggPlay - Great MP3 player
5. Fring - Access VOIP services such as Google Talk, Skype, and others
6. GPFCE - Full Nintendo NES emulator. Looks and sounds just like original, runs ROMs
7. MobiPad - Use Nintendo Wii remote as gamepad controller.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Tried this phone for exactly 29 days. Battery life did not improve. Calls were dropped consistently every day. I live and work out of New York Metro so definitely not an issue with coverage. Battery.. ok, maybe mine was defective, but the charge never lasted for more than half a day, even while the phone was used minimally without any of the smartphone features (like email express, messenger) running in the background.
AT&T forum discussion thread says it all... http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=nokia&thread.id=54671
If it wasn't for the features, I'd give a 0 rating, but what are features good for or smart for if the phone drops calls consistently and in addition does not last more than 8 hours (with max 2 hour talk time). Really dissappointed in Nokia and AT&T. Suggest you wait for firmware fix or the next model. Cheers.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

A compact and very elegant device.
by 07r08w64 on June 11, 2009
Pros: Physical design: great appearance and compact form, screen size and clarity, camera and video...It seems to have everything and I'm still learning its nuances.
Cons: 2.5 mm headphone jack
User interface could be more intuitive.
I don't like the way AT&T stuck me with there standard appsSummary: Has just about everything I need in a smart phone; good screen, good texting and emailing. Good camera. Much better than the BB curve (my wife has one). Metal casing ...
Summary: Has just about everything I need in a smart phone; good screen, good texting and emailing. Good camera. Much better than the BB curve (my wife has one). Metal casing gives it a very solid feel. Probably not as fun as an iphone but very efficient and functional; very much more a tool than a toy.
One more thing: the Nokia desktop software for synching w/ your laptop or desktop is great...I used to have a BB Pearl and found their desktop software not as good. It will be great when Nokia OVI becomes available for this phone.

Summary: If you are looking for a stylish phone and plan on using the AT&T software and data plans then this is a GREAT PHONE, but if you plan on using third party software and WiFi then AVOID this phone at all costs.
Let me start by saying that this is not my first "smart phone" but it is my first Symbian "smart phone." On Windows based phones the AT&T software is easily worked around, but on this phone it is in the way at every turn. I am not sure if AT&T is just getting better at blocking non AT&T functions, or if Symbian is just more susceptible to their blocking. I have "media net" blocked on my account, and use WiFi instead, since Media net was blocked, I have been unable to connect to IM via WiFi, and browsing the Internet takes several workarounds. Also the "dual screen" function available on the E71 has been disabled on the E71x.
Don't get me wrong, I love the style and possibilities of this phone, but for my needs the E71x is a crippled phone. After less than a week the E71x is getting returned and is being replaced with the unlocked E71. So as you can see I really LOVE the phone, I just HATE the "crippleware" installed on it.
Let me reiterate that this is a GREAT phone for people totally tied to the AT&T network, but for the more "independent" user JUST SAY NO!!!!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Tried 2 of the E71x, problems with both
Pros: 3 next calendar events on home screen, software (download from Nokia site) allows input from computer, 4 direction mouse, ease of setup
Cons: Print very small, first phone couldn't get internet to work right, second phone could not assign specific ring tones to groups or individuals, would not let you use downloaded music for ring tones
Summary: The first phone may have just been AT&T's software for Internet and email. Frustration with adding individual ring tones, following owners manual, online help from Nokia, and ...
Summary: The first phone may have just been AT&T's software for Internet and email. Frustration with adding individual ring tones, following owners manual, online help from Nokia, and tech sites, I finally traded it in on a Blackberry Bold. I miss the calendar and easy to use software of the Nokia.

amazing bang for the $$ Arguably best phone out there.
by ojsakila on May 22, 2009
Pros: Superior call quality, Battery life 10 times what my idiotic iphone and G1 offered. I have gone 5 days before...free download of Google maps made the GPS highly useable. Literally thousands of applications available for download accross the web.
Cons: my camera is fine. tons better than the iphone and G1 but proberly only average compared to other Nokia phones (that arent even available here in the U.S. anyway) Keyboard takes a minute to get used to
Summary: Just an awesome phone. Its so thin yet quite solid feeling with the steel case and all. extremley pocketable...battery seems to never wear out
