Nokia Lumia 800 - black (unlocked) price range: $214.39 - $434.99

The good: The Nokia Lumia 800 has a singular design, a stunning display, and a nice driving console in Nokia Drive.
The bad: Camera and video quality on the Lumia 800 is poor, despite the fancy specs. A front-facing camera would make the phone more competitive. The Micro-SIM slot is hard to access.
The bottom line: The unlocked Nokia Lumia 800 has an innovative design and gorgeous screen, but the poor camera quality and lack of a front-facing camera are major detractions.

2 days with my Lumia and I LOVE IT. Fast and awesome.
by ZeFrenchman on November 26, 2011
Pros: - awesome screen and nav.
- ease: all email accounts, facebook and linkedIn set-up in 5min. No apps
- transferred contacts from old phone using bluetooth. worked ;)
- Sent 20 fb messages this morning. never managed that with old phone.
- DIFFERENT:)Cons: - No front video; who cares. Never used it with old phone
- video in 720px only.
- "dearth of apps" according to papers. Maybe so, but not unlike Mac in 90s. Had little apps compared to PC (few games ,etc.), that didn't make them any less good!Summary: Just got my Lumia 2 days ago and I LOVE IT.

Before you ask I had an iPhone 3gs (stolen) in he past and was currently using HTC HD 2 (which I was generally happy with).
Since I got my Lumia I managed to :
- create all my email accounts + facebook and linkedIn in 5min top. Fact. No need for apps
- transferred all my contacts from my old phone using bluetooth. That worked a treat.
- Managed to send 20 comments on facebook which I had never done it in 2years before. That is that simple.
what I like is the fact that you can link contacts together (e.g. a contact with his linkedId and facebook profile) and see all interactions with that contact from one place. So too to interact with them. The "people" hub as they call it is superb.
I know there is no front video (there was in my old phone but never used it) and the camera only records in 720px. And it has a "dearth of apps" as the papers call it. However it reminds me of the Macintosh in the 90s. They do had a dearth of apps compared to PC (very few games ,etc...) but that didn't make them any less good.
Comparing Lumia and Windows Phone with the Macintosh of the past might shock more that one. But I feel it's very relevant : Market Share is tiny compared to Apple but being the small player they have been forced to do things differently. I.e. simple, clever and all integrated. I find it works perfectly. I can't be asked to scroll through screens of apps. I need phone, contacts, emails, texting and social media right there. Don't want to have to install itunes, apps, etc. That's what i get here.
I am now listening to Nokia music having connected my phone to my stereo. Again, no set-up/apps was required and music selection is good. It's a mix done for you; I chose classic rock theme and have listened so far to Pulp, Stairway to Heaven, U2: The Joshua Tree, simon & Garfunkel, currently playing Sweet home alabama.
I think there is a few things that could be improved but I can't really say if it's part of the Apple or Android experience.
I rate it 4.5 out of 5. Superb design, superb screen, intuitive navigation and ease of use. It simply works and looks awesome out of the box.4 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: The Lumia 800 is a pleasure to use, it's a style icon. It feels great in the hand. The curved glass and one piece construction scream quality. When in use the screen is so bright and colours so vivid it's amazing. The new windows phone OS is the future, so intuitive and user friendly. The ability to multitask opens a lot of possibilities, you can search be chatting on facebook, copy and paste the link into your chat seamlessly.
With the Lumia you have to use Zune software to transfer your media, while that may make you pause for thought, don't. Unlike Itunes which is clunky, slow, and just a pain to use, Zune is a pleasure. Zune doesn't try to force you to buy your music legally, it treats all your music library as though you bought it from them, it will find album art on it's own and can sort your tracks by album almost perfectly.
The fact that Windows phone users are currently in the minority means you'll miss out on a lot of apps. In future this may change as windows OS becomes more dominant, however for the moment it means no BBCiplayer app, or Onlive. Microsoft does make up for this somewhat with offerings such as Skydrive, giving you 25 gigs of cloud storage for free. All the BIG apps are there like BBC/Sky/Guardian News, but for the moment you may miss a few good ones.
All in all I would give the Lumia 9 out of 10
Once uptake improves and if flash support is added it could earn a 10.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I got to play with this at an industry premier in London. Very hush hush. I was impressed! For the sake of full disclosure, I'm already a big fan of the Nokia N-line, especially the N9, so I knew what to expect. I'll never go back to Nokia's proprietary operating system after seeing Windows Phone 7 running on this bad boy. By the way, Windows Phone 7 is a really stupid name for an OS.

Best phone line up for WP7
by dukepaladin on November 2, 2011
Pros: Beautiful curved AMOLED Clear Black Display
Solid built
Colorful colors
High quality camera with Carl Zeiss
Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive with offline navigationCons: No front facing camera
No NFC
No Pentaband, aka T-Mobile USA 3G support.
Slower browsing speed than Galaxy S2, iPhone 4S
Only 3.7 inch - it's not a con for everyone but I'd love it to reach 3.9-4.0 inch. The rumored Lumia 900 is suppose to have 4.3 inch s1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I bought the Nokia Lumia 800 for my work. I've kept away from smartphones for a long time, mainly because of the pure size of them. Coming from a Nokia 5800 and then a Nokia 500 (yes I'll admit, I've had Nokia's all my life except from one bad move to Samsung), I heard Good Stuff about the Lumia's and the Windows Phone OS. I assumed it would be quite like the OS on my once-iPaq. So... a smartphone... To be honest I think people call a phone a smartphone when it is beyond handy. I'd say my 5800 and 500 had all the same functionality, but lack the size.
Okay then, so I bought the phone as a designer for a webdesign company yools.com because I'd need some extra apps for eg. SMS that I knew were available on Windows Phone. On first sight, it turned out to be everything I had hoped it would be. Excellent screen, not the iPhone lots-of-buttons-to-dig-deep-in-menus interface and more that its 3 hours of battery life. Well to be honest I could go and about how it's an excellent phone. And it is. Were it not for some things I don't like - coming from 'old' Nokia's. And I'm sure you'll be interested more in those.
One thing is the lack of 'profiles'. Which I've grown NOT to miss. If you've had a Nokia, you know that 'profiles' is an easy way to switch from a 'meeting' setup (no ring or sms tones, only alarms, vibrator on) to 'outdoor' (loud ringing) or just 'general' (ringing that gets louder with time, regular SMS tone,...). Those are well and truly gone. I missed them for a couple of days, but in the end it's not that important. Depends on your own situation.
Another something is the weird calendar alarm. It'll just 'ding' once and that's it. Yups - that means you're bound to miss an alarm or two since if you don't hear it, that's it. It'll just display 'dismiss' or 'snooze' on the screen. It won't even automatically snooze, or continue yelling at you. Just one single tone and that's it.
Something else calendar related: you can't customise the alarm time. So say you have a appointment at 18:00 and have a 90 minute drive, there's no way to set the meeting alart 2 hours in advance. Instead you have a couple of presets which you probably won't need or are only good if you are in the neighbourhood (or really far away). This still bothers me no end.
Then there's ringtones. Not that you don't have a wide selection, but if you don't have a special little programme to mark MP3's as ringtones, you can't just use any file to act as a ringtone. Even if you use the convertor / marker, the ringtone is limited to 'definitely not the entire song'. Did I say the SMS tone is really short and there's no way of changing it to the 'classic' double 'deep deep - deep deep'? You could call be nitpicking, but they're 'smart' phones, no? And the old ones where you COULD change those things are 'dumb' phones? Anyway, there's also the fact you can't send business cards to other people unless you download an extra app. And the fact you can go 'back' to a previous screen / app but not forward. Or the fact that apps don't just run in the background without some kind of Nokia Permission - so the 'wake me up app' that plays your favourite song has to be on screen to wake you up rather than 'program it and tuck it away at night'.
Now of course (ahem), you can't blame Nokia. They just throw a rather generic Windows Phone OS on there and that's it. But really, the WP 7.8 that runs on this baby hasn't grown up. All those little things point towards that conclusion. Tell me about a phone that needs to turn itself ON before it wants to charge. Also, that 16-hour-battery-life-without-problems has dropped to about 10 or 11 switching to a provider that doesn't have as good a coverage in the regions I move in.
All in all, if you're moving to a New Nokia coming from say an S60 or so, you're bound to be both pleased with the phone being more 'touchy', but equally you'll come away less impressed with the lack of small and nice things that made up Nokia for all those years. Every day you keep asking yourself: if this is a 'smart' phone, why do I need to keep going through extra layers of menu? Why isn't is a user-oriented as the one I had before?
So... having tried out numerous Android (yucks) and iPhones (iPads are good, but the OS on an iPhone is still a couple of centimeters away from being 'really nice') I found this Windows Phone thing to be rather nice and different. But there's plenty of little things I don't like, and the fact is I'm dealing with those little things on a daily basis. I'm looking forward though to Windows 10 or 11 or whatever it is that will bring us back the classic Nokia user-friendliness. Indeed, I've been a fan for many years (since 1998) and if I'm getting rid of this 800 you're bound to see me using my 500 again. But I'm pretty sure the Nokia wizards will start a little club with the MS guys and bring us the best of both worlds. Until then... I guess we'll just have to wait.
