The good: The Nokia N79 offers a slim and attractive design and packs in a load of multimedia features, including a 5-megapixel camera that takes excellent photos. The Symbian smartphone also features integrated Wi-Fi, U.S. 3G support, Bluetooth, and GPS.
The bad: The N79's navigation controls and dialpad are a little cramped, and call quality was a bit mixed.
The bottom line: The Nokia N79 might not be the star of the N series devices, but it still shines as a great multimedia smartphone with plenty of features and fast performance.

Good multimedia phone

Summary: I just got the N79 the first one I got the screen just stopped working so Nokia did replace the phone. The second does have one pixel out on the screen other then that no issues right now. The screen is great really bright easy to see. Music is easy to play and is organized. There is the Navi whele, scroll wheel similar to an iPod. It is great so scroll through lots of media but got annoying in menus. The camera takes great pictures without the flash for a phone. The colors look great. Fast motion is not the greatest, if you are looking to replace your camera with this do not. The flash had to be one of the biggest complaints I have with the N79. Every close up I take with the flash has a green tint to it. If you step away from the subject it seems to go away. Also I have noticed on some of the pictures I have taken with the flash the top of the pictures seemed to be discolored from the flash. It is kind of lighter, sometimes even white. It is way better then the N97 though, some pictures I have seen have been horrible when the flash is being used. Another great thing about the camera is that you can Geotag the pictues, record GPS location of wher you took the picture. A great feature with that is you can see the location right on the phone instead of uploading it to the web. The keys are cramped on the phone, that is the price you pay for a small phone though. I have decent size fingers and do not have much of an issue, mainly just with the 1, 2, and 3 keys. Gps is pretty good I have not really used it that much. I do like that it goes on the web to find stuff so it is up to date unlike most GPS units. The N79 does not seem to be a very popular phone compared to some of Nokia's other N series. I have not been able to find a lot of apps on Ovi for the phone. One app that works very well with the phone is Nokia Vine, the reason I bought the phone. If anyone has a nokia phone with GPS this is a must have. Call quality has been fine for me no issues here. Reception is good where I live no one gets great reception and I am constantly jumping from 3g and Edge. Thought compared to other phones I have had it is a lot more stable.

Summary: Camera?s excellent, use it to even send ?scanned? documents. Transmitter?s great, no need for extra connectivity to play music in the car, or through other radios when I need to hear some good tunes ; )
Not durable, it fell off my desk and when it hit the floor (plastic) 2 feet below the faceplate cracked?and just try getting a new one! And if you find it, the cost cause they sell the whole covering as one.
had the phone for only 5 months and now it?s freezing, battery life is terrible one day of use only after fully charging.Crashing a lot. Restart the phone and within max 1 minute of use it freezes, so I have to restart and then hope that I have enough time to pull out a tel number to call from another device. I went back to Nokia after an unimpressive time with Samsung (two devices) and got this type of reliability as a welcome back.
Gets only 1 star for me because I bought it recently for $270 and its now got to be sent back. -

Great phone with some performance issues
by Chowdder512 on January 16, 2010
Pros: Handsome handset for a Nokia phone at least, Wifi capable, FM transmitter, great 5MP camera, GPS, accelerometer, multimedia function, document viewer, 3.5 mm headphone jack, scroll wheel, 3G, colour back-cover.
Cons: Plastic-like feel (which makes it feel kinda cheap), FM radio does not always work, sluggish menu performance occasionally, below average battery life, poor key pads, crashes once or twice a month, stiff battery cover.
Summary: So I'm a long time owner of this phone. I bought mine back in April of 2009, and I've had this phone for almost a year now. I ...
Summary: So I'm a long time owner of this phone. I bought mine back in April of 2009, and I've had this phone for almost a year now. I can definitely say that durability wise, this phone is built almost like a tank. I've dropped it more than a couple of times. Overall, it is a great phone and I wouldn't have kept it if it wasn't. However I'm not here to praise the phone, most of you guys would already know what praises I would throw since you've read the spec sheet. Instead , I've come to point out the shortcomings of this phone during my time as the first owner.
First is the feel of this phone, it's not light nor is it heavy. It gives the impression that it's a light phone but it's heavier than it looks. The outter cover has a plastic-like feel from the keypads, to the chrome accents, to the camera lense cap. Everything is plastic-like, which makes it look and feel cheap.
The FM radio tuner has become an issue for the past 4 or 5 months now. So far, firmware updates have not corrected the problem. What I experience is loss of radio tuner after keeping the phone on for over 12-18 hours. Even if the tuner is not in use, if I begin to use it after I kept the phone on for 12-18 hours, the tuner can not tune into any radio stations. I have to restart the phone in order to have it working again. A nuisance since I use it as a fm radio on a semi-daily basis.
On a full charge, this phone gives me approximately a little over one full day of usage before I need to recharge the battery. I'm a below average user and I expected the phone to last me at least 2 days without need to charge. If you're a heavy user, the battery will drain very quickly.
Unlike what most other people say about the keypad, I personally do not find it to be that bad. It's not great since the menu keys are stubby and difficult to press, but they're not terrible either. The number keys are completely flat (meaning they have nothing to distinguish one key from the next). My biggest grip is with the D-pad. First of all, the "enter/ok" button in the middle is unnecessarily large. It is so big, that often I have difficulty pressing the up button. The D-pad double function as a scroll wheel, which is actually pretty functional when paired with the music player function or selecting items through a huge menu. However, because of the large center button, you are constantly moving your thumb out of the way in order to complete a full circle.
Finally, I wish the lense cover will have some form of a clip-like mechanism to hold it in the close position. I put the phone in my jean pocket, and often I find that I'm inadvertently activating the camera. Having the hold switch on doesn't even solve this problem, since sliding of the lense cover automatically unlock the keypads.
Despite this drawbacks, I still love this phone. In terms of the mileage I got out of this phone, I think it is worth the 350 dollars I spent to buy it. -

Summary: Despite of the poor keypad design and smaller screen size compared to N95 (there is enough room for a bigger screen), and the choice of back covers which is not in synchronisation with the front, N79 is a good choice in price-performance. Although N79 is one of the slimmest N-Series phone available in the market, I can't say it has a 'slim' design (it's still 15 mm thick).

Great phone! Best choice!

Pros: Your best choice in price-performance-size-features, and with a super-fast-GPS !
Cons: The D-Pad, and Menu and Clear Buttons (not so Cons, but a little annoying)
Summary: As i said, my best choice in SmartPhone. (I used to use Nokia N75, N95 8GB, Nokia N78, HTC Diamond and HP iPaq 614c).
