The good: The Palm Pre's multitasking capabilities and notifications system are unparalleled. The smartphone features a vibrant display with multitouch functionality as well as a solid Web browser and good multimedia integration. The Pre offered good call quality and wireless options include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
The bad: The Pre's keyboard is cramped. Battery life drains quickly, and the smartphone can be sluggish at times. Lacks expansion slot, video-recording capabilities, onscreen keyboard, and Flash support. The Pre App Catalog is still in beta with a limited number of titles.
The bottom line: Despite some missing features and performance issues that make it less than ideal for on-the-go professionals, the Palm Pre offers gadget lovers and consumers well-integrated features and unparalleled multitasking capabilities. The hardware could be better, but more importantly, Palm has developed a solid OS that not only rivals the competition but also sets a new standard in the way smartphones handle tasks and manage information.

A truly revolutionary product....

Pros: -Ability to run simultaneous applications with WebOS

-Great feel in hand with small form factor, and rounded corners

-MUCH nicer QWERTY keyboard than advertized IMOCons: -Small app store at launch
-Plastic screen may be more prone to scratching

Summary: After watching an ungodly amount of video footagre prior to launch, I finally picked up my PRE first thing this morning, and all I can say is WOW! As Bonnie Cha said, "welcome back Palm." THIS is exactly the kind of intuitive, revolutionary, product Palm was known for a decade ago that so many people (myself included) feared they had forgotten how to make. The new Palm design and development team built around much of the same corps of individuals once responsible for the iPhone (most importantly John Rubenstein) have cemented their legacy among the finest minds in personal electronics. If you've ever owned, used, and/or admired the iPhone, the PRE will represent the next logical step in the evolution of the cell phone. With WebOS the ability to run multiple applications is unparalleled by anything currently on the market. I utilized the native Pandora app to listen to music while surfing the web the entire morning and was amazed with the ease and speed with which the device performed. Call quality is on par with any top-end Sprint or Verizon phone which is to say that it is VERY good, and the reception stength in limited testing has been nothing short of spectacular as has been noted in several professional reviews. They keyboard is much better than, frankly, I expected it would be. There's no denying that it's not a HUGE keyboard on par with a blackberry, but it is very functional for anyone with average sized hands. In fact, I have found that I am able to type much faster with it than my old HTC Mogul because there is much less "downward travel" on the keys of the PRE. Finally, the touchstone charger (sold separately) is a revolutionary device which eliminates the need to involve yourself with clumsy charger doors and/or unnecessary cables. The only downside I think anyone should be aware of is the reality that this is a version 1.0 product, and as such can be expected to have some hiccups, especially during the first 3-6 months after launch (June 6, 2009). If you demand blackberry reliabilty out of the box and aren't willing to experience some growing pains with your device, then perhaps you are best served with a blackberry product. If, however, you want a small form factor, multiple application running, wifi enabled, full qwerty keyboard, capacitive touchscreeen, multimedia capable phone...then you've just found your holy grail.

I'm an on-the-go professional, and I dig the Pre

Summary: Though CNET claims the Pre is "less than ideal" for on-the-go professionals, I have found it to be pretty ideal (I am an attorney). I guess the best thing about it for me is that it is ready to go out of the box with the programs and apps I need (like adobe, word). I set up my Outlook myself (and I am no techie), it was not difficult. Not that the camera is essential to my job duties, but it takes tremendous pictures for a cell phone camera. Call quality is not bad (my brother has a Blackberry, which I tested out, and could barely hear the person I was talking to with the volume on full blast), though the speaker phone is nothing to write home about. I found the keyboard to be just fine as well, even if there is a bit less space than other smartphones. All in all, the Pre is everything I was looking for, with a large well-done touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard and all the functionality I need.

Phenominal cosmic power, itty bitty living space
by Kbolster on June 23, 2009
Pros: Great Web Browser, Sleek, Small in pocket, Large vibrant screen, full qwerty keyboard, very easy to use and understand, Camera with Flash, Slightly cheaper monthly costs, extremely fun to use.
Cons: Limited apps, limited to sprint, Micro usb plug/cover is annoying to use, NO EXPANDABLE Memeory/SD slot, No video recorder, No MSN messenger in the "All-in-one messenger"
Summary: The few areas this phone lacks in are annoying: Limited apps out right now, Sprint service areas are not as inclusive as other carriers, and Lack of a msn messenger. ...
Summary: The few areas this phone lacks in are annoying: Limited apps out right now, Sprint service areas are not as inclusive as other carriers, and Lack of a msn messenger.
Some complaints I've seen are unfounded and I'd like to address those.
Battery life: I've charged this phone up, taken it out to the lake for the weekend and played around with it for endless hours and had no issues with low battery. I didn't have wifi on, but I was playing the Sprint TV, Surfing the web, and calling or messaging most the time, as well as taking pictures and sending them. 2 days of full use, no charge, and no problems. This is better than most smart phones I've had in the past.
Small Keyboard = difficult to use: Simply not true. I have extremely large hands. Freakishly large. seriously... and I've had no troubles at all clicking out the keys to type exactly what I want it to say. I've used a black berry curve for the last 2 years and I would say I transitioned over to this keyboard without even giving it a thought.
I've seen no better phone out there. With the promise of flash on the way, the ability to send MMS, the qwerty keyboard, camera with a flash, and very small package, it delivers many of the features lacking in the iphone. I've gone with the pre because I believe the WebOS is by far superior and we will soon see a large collection of apps.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

p.s. correction: there is an alarm reminder. the phone asks if you want to dismiss or snooze when the alarm goes off.
Here is a list of my palm pre peeves:
-EXTREMELY short battery life (it lasts less than a day, so i have to bring charger everywhere)
-no ability to search the calendar (how is this function not available? the "universal" search only looks into contacts)
-no ability to undo actions (that's right! if you accidently delete anoteora number while typing, it's gone forever)
-manual sync button is not conveniently located + it doesn't sync automatically with google often enough (so you have to go into a menu then scroll down to the bottom to sync)
-difficult to move cursor back and forward (why is there not a button? instead you have to hold one button while pushing your finger across the screen; repeatedly tap the screen until you hit the spot you want to go to; or (if going backwards) delete until you get there).
-difficult to select text (again, you have to hold one button while pushing your finger across the screen)
-no command to select all (you get cut, copy, paste, but not select all...?)
-no options for reminder or text message sounds (one sound for each and they are almost identical)
-limited options for reminder lengths (of time) + google allows only up to 4 weeks (and in those limited options you don't even get an on-time/0-minute reminder)
-no repeating alarm reminders (this is fine if you actually do whatever you need to do immediately after an alarm rings...but what about the rest of us normal procrastinators? we need a reminder! or five!)
-no alarms for tasks
-no ability to sort tasks
-no categories for memos
-no ability to sort memos (+ memo and tasks aren't synced to google calendar/desktop)

This is a fabulous business phone!
by elbess on June 14, 2009

Card deck makes everything easy to organize, find, and use
Phone is small with a nice size screen 3.1
Slide switch to turn off sounds
3.5 mm plug for headsets
Comes with all the essential apps necessary for a business phoneCons: No automatic spelling checker
I wish it had a glass screen like the IPod/IPhone
I would like to see more or user expandable memory so I could replace my IPod touch completely
Needs voice dialing for at least the Bluetooth headset.Summary: Most cons can be overcome by READING the manual!! Which is obvious that some reviewers haven?t done or don?t really own the phone and just like to badmouth ...

I am very tired of hearing people complain about the battery life. PLEASE? This is a small phone and bigger batteries make the phone bigger (not a plus). The Ipod/Iphone has no user changeable battery period. So get a bigger battery (and a bigger phone) and get 2-3 more hrs between charges - still not enough to work a long day at a trade show. With the Ipod/Iphone you are dead unless you can find a place to charge your phone? But not with the Palm Pre (or other phones with replaceable batteries). Let?s get real here? Palm makes this very cool and very small spare battery holder/charger 3404WW. I got 2 for less than$70.00 (with the batteries). I have yet to use the second one. So I work a long day and in 6-8 hrs. I just pop in a fully charged spare and I am good for another 6-8 hrs. This a small price to pay for a very nice small phone that is better than anything out there.
Yes it doesn?t have a lot of apps yet - but in reality how important are they to a business user? The onscreen keyboard would be handy but I am sure it will come soon.
I really take exception to the review stating this is not a good business phone. I have had all the ?Great? business phones and this is the best out these at this time. The IPhone is unusable as a business phone without a replaceable battery.
I am not sure how you make a small phone with an enormous keyboard? I find the slide out keyboard very usable and I actually think it is a reason to buy the phone! For a business phone I think you must have a real keyboard.
If you want a better camera buy a camera. If you want video recorder buy one? This is a business phone primarily so don?t complain about non essential stuff.
Finger print magnet -- give me a break ? wipe it off once in awhile.4 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Followup to Instinct concept
by StennG on June 6, 2009
Pros: Good for first time Smartphone buyers, Low Cost entry level smartphone, interesting GUI
Cons: Very poor reception, poor battery life, small non user scalable memory, subpar carrier, cheap feel, very tight keyboard compared to other keyboard models, modem disabled by carrier, iTunes only "half" iTunes, no security for enterprise.
Summary: I took a Pre home yesterday. though a launch party by Palm a couple of days ago in LA. This is Sprint's second attempt at a network dependent, "Walled ...
Summary: I took a Pre home yesterday. though a launch party by Palm a couple of days ago in LA. This is Sprint's second attempt at a network dependent, "Walled Garden" entry level smartphone. The first was samsung's Instinct, the second is Palms "Fat middle" Pre. It is clearly aimed at the average entry level smartphone users as it lacks several functions needed by professional users.
What I mean by followup up to Instinct concept: By offering a smartphone with on board capabilities limited, and pushing buyers to higher priced plans in order to use those needed functions on via the network, Sprint and Palm are betting on a new model to get higher revenue from customers by offering "walled garden" smartphones. Hence the only GPS is their own, and you cannot use TomTom or Garmin Nav programs where you pay once and never again. It may seem like a small thing, but you need Sprints' GPS included plans, and the GPS nav will never work off Sprints data network, which has a lot of holes.
They also left off memory cards, which better smartphones utilize.
Also gone is another feature on all smartphones: "Phone as modem." I use this half a dozen times a year when on vacation for my laptop. Providers don't care if you do this rarely. But with Pre you can do it never, you have to buy a card and pay an additional fee of $400 year even to use it a few times. That is bad,
After a couple of days of use I can say the battery life is abysmal. Smartphones draw power but this seems to be the most underpowered battery of any smartphone. It is especially noticeable because the Pre is heavily network dependent.
The Pre is also completely unsuited for enterprise and professional use since it will NOT integrate with enterprise systems as noted by CNET.
All in all if you are a tech oriented or a professional I would say wait a year to see if a webos device with serious hardware comes out.6 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.

I like this phone, even with few shortcomings.
by mikes2717 on July 8, 2009
Pros: Works well as a phone, good reception and voice quality, no dropped calls so far. OS and multitasking, integrated contacts, email, messageing, simple synching of all wirelessly, decent camera, and simple synch of partial music library through iTunes.
Cons: Two things: Battery life and lack of spell check for email.
Summary: I like this phone and admit I've been tempted to make the jump to iPhone, but my major hesitation is related to ATT service reliability and of course, cost. ...
Summary: I like this phone and admit I've been tempted to make the jump to iPhone, but my major hesitation is related to ATT service reliability and of course, cost. So many of these reviews focus on iPhone and are filled with comparison and bashing. I will keep it simple from my perspective of using the Pre for the past week. The phone works great as a phone, the multitasking is very useful and you'll find ways it saves time that you didn't consider because your past phones never had that capability. At first, it seems "gimmicky", but use it and you'll realize what you were missing. Synching email and getting my contacts (1,800) onto the Pre was simple via Google. At first I was hesitant about using Google as the "middleman" but have found the convenience of doing it all wirelessly easily overcame my initial hesitation. I don't find myself missing an appointment because I forgot to connect and synch my phone calendar. Other phones have this capability, but the Pre makes it very simple. The camera is decent (for a phone) and the music synching through iTunes, also a plus. I've used it as a USB storage device to hold files and moved across custom ringtones quickly and easily. That sums the good points.
Now the detractors: Battery life. I have yet to make it through a full day's use, without the need to at least catch few minutes connected to a charger. I can make it through my work day, roughly 7am to 6pm, but if I want to use the phone in the evenings, I'll need to charge it somewhere along the way at least briefly. If I could make it the full day, and charge each night, I would be OK with that, but this is worse than I expected. The lack of a spell check in email seems like such an oversight I was shocked. I thought it was a feature pretty standard as it has been in every BlackBerry for the past few years, as well as iPhone and others I've used. I did have some issues with original POP email setup, where the phone would "loose" or delete email messages. They weren't deleted from the server so they also showed up in my Outlook folders. I made changes to use IMAP setup instead of POP and have found that more convenient and have not seen the problem since. Just a cautionary note to not have your Pre delete emails from your server until you're sure all is working as it should.
Overall, this is a good phone and messaging device. There is definitely room for improvement, but I've never used the "perfect" phone yet. I don't think it exists nor will it ever. Hope this review helps if you're out there shopping for a phone. I read too many reviews that clearly hated or loved Apple products. I tried to keep this review to discussing the good and bad of the Pre, from a real-life user?s perspective. If it helps, I use my phone on an average day for 60 minutes talk, handle 50 to 60 email messages, and send/receive maybe 70-80 text messages, mix in use of the GPS to find a meeting or lunch spot, and that?s my typical use profile. I use the music player and camera intermittently, mostly on weekends.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great little phone w/ nice features
by thebogusman on July 3, 2009
Pros: WebOS, Synergy, keyboard, size, multitasking, great camera, EM charging, great SMS
Cons: A little touch sensitive, keyboard (see review), fingerprint Magnet, Synergy (see review), no expansion slot

The good: WebOS is ...Summary: I have had this camera for a month now, and wanted to wait and see how it does for a month before giving an objective opinion.
The good: WebOS is awesome! With multitasking, it distinguishes itself compared to the rest. Synergy grabs all emails and phones from FB, e-mail, and phone, and (with a little editing--took me about an hour total to clean up) put all info for a contact in one. The camera (for a phone), even w/ LED Flash, are very nice for a phone cam. SMS is a breeze--it even keeps things in "Conversation mode", which is better than most phones I've used. I also got Touchstone, which is very nice and convenient for charging--a definite must for charging.
The bad: I find this phone a little sensitive to touch, but there is no worry about dialing numbers while in your pocket, but I've inadvertently deleted VMs (using thumb) once or twice. The keyboard is a nice feature, and many find it small, but with my big hands, any physical keyboard (including BB) would be small--even w/ my big hands, I find this relatively decent to type on after a few types. I do find the screen a little bit more of a fingerprint magnet, but I expect this of most touchphones; it comes off after a few wipes. While Synergy is very nice, it does incorporate people in Facebook whose contacts I don't want on the phone, and at this time, there is no way to take them off. Only other thing that would be nice is an expansion slot, but integration w/ PC is nice, so that's not as much of a worry.
A few other things to address: a) app store--I expect very few apps, and really only need a few for convenience (WHERE is an excellent one, and Pandora is nice), but unless you're dying for useless ones to show off, there are enough (like Chapura for Outlook) to help with the basic conveniences. b) Battery life. Initially, even w/ charge, it would take me through most of the day w/ little use. However, with subsequent charges and heavier use, I have had it hold up well. Be aware that with a touchscreen and multiple programs, these phones in general will have less charge than a conventional cell or BB. I have seen that extended batteries will be out in a few months. c) Give a trial at the store to see how they work. Some people will like it; others won't. d) I have both Sprint and Verizon (personal and work, respectively). Have found that there is really no difference between the two (if anything, Sprint will work in some places that Verizon won't), with no change in dropped calls between the two. Never had an issue w/ Sprint, despite reviews in the past stating they did. If anything, customer service has been awesome.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Critial features to me were "Voice Dialing" since I ride a motorcycle and my headset is voice activated and Data Transfer. I'm a consultant and cannot have any downtime on my contacts. I was one of the first who waited in line to get one at Best buy. I had been waiting for the phone for months. WHen I picked up the phone and took it home I discovered that the voice dialing feature wasn't in the phone and Sprint couldn't move my contacts out of my Katana to this phone yet.
I also had the phone lock up three times in the first day where I could not even disconnect a call because of the OS had locked me out.
I lved the look of the phone but it didn't do the job.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Palm Pre is a go!
by tcpdirector on June 28, 2009
Pros: The webOS is slick. This phone is fast, save the boot time which is 90 seconds. But once it gets going, it runs perfectly. The phone match-points the iphone feature for feature save the applications. But, this phone is utterly streamlined.
Cons: The battery life is not so hot. I don't like the charger port because it is too small. However, the keyboard complaints that others have seem unwarranted. I have large fingers and I found it very easy in comparison to the iphones nightmare touch keys
Summary: The webOS is slick. This phone is super fast and has zero errors (save the boot time from a cold start which is a huge pain and averages 90 seconds. ...
Summary: The webOS is slick. This phone is super fast and has zero errors (save the boot time from a cold start which is a huge pain and averages 90 seconds. The card view system is revolutionary because it is not an application, but the structure to its functionality. The iphone OS is rather boring.
The phone plan with Sprint that is unlimited everything is significantly cheaper than AT&Ts plans.
This phone match points the iphone feature for feature (please note I don't mean the 3Gs which has video). I'm utterly happy with this phone and I appreciate that it doesn't have a slew of apps yet (clearly they are being approved slowly and efficiently for business-minded people. The phone is smaller and is snug in my pocket. I love the feel and the keyboard pops up and down quickly and cleanly.
The applications are going to scream on this things. I think that the card view is the one thing this phone really has going for it above any other phone. Applications come in and out instantly. The download times with 3G are fast as heck.
What I adore about this phone is that it is completely efficient. It syncs with email perfectly and the phone popup menu just makes sense. It has multitouch, so you can expand images just like the iphone using two fingers. What I found very interesting is that this phone is much more thumb driven than index finger -that's because the phone is smaller.
Keep in mind that if you want a media player, this will import all your videos and music from itunes, and it will import all your photos from iphoto perfectly.
Another cool feature is that when you plug it in, it immediately offers you three options. 1) Charge 2) USB drive 3) Sync. You can use this phone with its 8 gig capacity like a USB drive, literally dragging and dropping data onto it. I did it with my mac and it worked perfectly.
Another thing that is great about this phone is that the ball and the extra touch interface beyond the basic screen interface is awesome.
The major note I would make is that if you want an amazing phone, get this Pre. If you want a media player, don't get a iphone, get an ipod touch. The Pre does everything, but it's flat out a better phone and organizing system, and the OS does circles around the iphone -sorry about the terrible boot time tough. The battery life is not so good, so I'm getting a car charger. It does however charge right off your USB port on your laptop, so you can use the net and charge your phone, then step away to your car and charge. I found that taking the screen brightness down saves a lot, and even at its most dim, it still looks great. At its brightest, it's blindingly bright. Wow!
Camera on it is great -and it has a flash.
No matter what, this phone is exactly what I need to be efficient. I'll get an ipod touch later this fall when the new one comes out -I'm sure it will have video.
The app store will come screaming out on this thing, and the load times are immediate. Lets hope it stays that way.
Somebody got the Pre right. Thanks, Palm. Thanks for coming back. It was worth the wait.
