The good: The RIM BlackBerry 8703e is EV-DO capable and supports up to 10 e-mail accounts with real-time delivery. The 8703e also boasts a sharp screen, a full QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth 2.0, and a speakerphone.
The bad: The RIM BlackBerry 8703e for Verizon does not include any instant-messaging clients and occasionally suffered from muffled call quality.
The bottom line: Despite some spotty call quality, the RIM BlackBerry 8703e for Verizon Wireless is a great messaging device offering reliable e-mail delivery, a full QWERTY keyboard, a gorgeous screen, and EV-DO support.
Design
As the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and this certainly applies to the design of the entire BlackBerry 8700 series. Similar to its GSM cousin, the BlackBerry 8700g, the RIM BlackBerry 8703e sports a nice and compact form factor at 4.3x2.7x0.8 inches and 4.7 ounces. True, it's not as sexy or sleek as the BlackBerry Pearl; it has a blockier, wider form factor that takes some acclimation to use as a phone, but the trade-off is you get the advantage of a full QWERTY keyboard (not that pesky SureType deal) and a large 2.5-inch diagonal QVGA display. Also, the 8703e is extremely easy to use one-handed, thanks to the trademark BlackBerry track wheel and escape button on the right spine.
The screen shows off 65,536 colors at a 320x240 pixel resolution, which makes for a great viewing experience as images and text appear sharp and colors are bright. The BlackBerry 8703e's display also features a light-sensing technology that automatically adjusts the backlighting depending on whether you're indoors, outdoors, or in a dark environment. Sure enough, we had no problems reading the screen even when in direct sunlight. As with other BlackBerrys, you can change the backlighting time, the home screen theme, and the font size, style, and family, all through the Options menu.
For phone calls, there are Talk and End buttons right below the display, as well as a convenience key in the middle that can be programmed to launch any app, while the full QWERTY keyboard can handle all your messaging needs. The 35 individual keys are tactile and well spaced, but they are a bit slick and feel plasticky. Still, we had no real problems writing any e-mails or text messages, and they're adequately backlit for typing in dim rooms.
There is a 2.5mm headset jack, a mini USB port, and another customizable soft key on the left side of the BlackBerry 8703e, while the power button and mute key are on top of the unit. Finally, the speakerphone is located on the back of the device. Verizon packages its BlackBerry 8703e with a travel charger, a USB cable, a belt holster, and reference.
Features
As with other BlackBerrys, e-mail is king on the RIM BlackBerry 8703e. The smart phone is compatible with BlackBerry, Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, or Novell GroupWise servers and the famed push technology delivers your corporate e-mail in real time right to your device. In addition, you can access up to 10 personal/business POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail accounts, and thanks to the handy BlackBerry Internet E-mail service, you can set up everything right out of the box. Just go to the E-mail Setting utility on the device, enter your e-mail address and password, and let the 8703e do the rest. We used this process to access our SBC Global account, and we started receiving our messages without any problems within about 10 minutes. Of course, mobile professionals may need more functionality than e-mail to get work done on the go, so the BlackBerry 8703e's attachment viewer opens popular file formats, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Corel WordPerfect, PDF, JPEG, and GIF.
Disappointingly, the Verizon BlackBerry 8703e doesn't come with any instant-messaging clients (not even BlackBerry Messenger) preinstalled on the device. We were able to log onto Yahoo Messenger via the phone's Web browser, and even though the 8703e is more of a business-oriented device, we still appreciate the convenience, or at least the option, of having a preloaded IM app. That said, the phone does support text and multimedia messaging.
One great advantage of the Verizon BlackBerry 8703e is the EV-DO capabilities. With the support of the carrier's 3G network, you'll be able to connect and browse the Web at almost broadband-like speeds. While data speeds can reach up to 2Mbps, you'll probably experience more in the 400Kbps to 700Kbps range. You can also use the 8703e as a tethered modem for your laptop using the included USB cable, but you will need to sign up for Verizon Wireless's BroadbandAccess Connect service in order to do so. If you already have an unlimited data plan with qualifying voice plan, you can get unlimited BroadbandAccess Connect for $15 a month, otherwise, it will cost $30 a month. The 8703e also has integrated Bluetooth 2.0 (no Wi-Fi) but it's limited to wireless headsets, hands-free kits, and synching with Bluetooth-enabled PCs. It does not support the object exchange (OBEX) profile.
As a phone, the address book is limited only by the available memory, which tops out at 64MB Flash memory and 16MB SDRAM. For each entry, you can store up to eight numbers, work and home addresses, e-mail and Web addresses, company information, and notes. In addition, you can assign them to a group category--business or personal. You get 32 polyphonic ring tones with support for MP3 rings tones, as well as a vibrate mode, conference calling, speed dialing, call forwarding, and a speakerphone.
The RIM BlackBerry 8703e does not have any multimedia capabilities, such as an audio or a video player or a camera). You do get one game (BrickBreaker), as well as a number of PIM tools, including a calendar, a task list, a memo pad, and a calculator.
Performance
We tested the dual-band (CDMA 850/1900; EV-DO) RIM BlackBerry 8703e in San Francisco using Verizon's network, and call quality was a bit of mixed bag. While our friends said they had no problems hearing us and were impressed by the clarity of the phone call, we thought they sounded a bit muffled and had some difficulties hearing our callers. On a brighter note, speakerphone quality was great on both ends of the conversation. We also had no problems pairing the phone with the Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth headset.
Armed with an Intel processor, the BlackBerry 8703e was responsive and speedy as we opened and worked on various apps. Also, thanks to the EV-DO speeds, the Web browsing experience was great as pages loaded quickly.
The 8703e's battery is rated for 3.3 hours of talk time and up to 8 days of standby time. In our battery drain tests, we were able to get a solid 5.2 hours of talk time before having to recharge. According to FCC radiation tests, the BlackBerry 8703e has a digital SAR rating of 1.44 watts per kilogram.

Well Worth the T-Mobile Termination Fee

Summary: You can find many very technical reviews on the 8703e, and most I've read give it the highest of marks in all areas. So rather than waste time saying all these things again, I'll take a different approach.
I have been through four BlackBerry phones in five years, and even though this one is basically the same as the 8700g I had with T-Mobile, as soon as Verizon Wireless came out with it, I gladly paid the $175 termination fee to move back to Verizon Wireless (it really is all about the network). I started with VZW using one of the old B&W BlackBerries, then the 7250 when it came out. When I saw the 7100 series at T-Mobile I jumped, moving eventually to the 8700g (same phone as the 8703e).
I have tried the Motorola Q, and if you're comparing it and the 8703e, it's an unfair comparison. The 8703e is by far the more solid, robust, easier to use, easier to see, (and much more) of the two. It functions better as a phone and functions far better in an email role. Using the 8703e with the Desktop Redirector allows it to sync flawlessly with Outlook, providing constant PUSH email anywhere you have coverage. With the Desktop Manager, a quick USB cable sync updates Contacts, Tasks, Notes, and Calendar from Outlook.
The Verizon EVDO network is much faster than what I experienced with T-Mobile, but it's also over twice as expensive as the T-Mobile data plan. If you're on a budget or pinching pennies...don't even think about VZW. I think they're the best, but they are not economical at all.
The BlackBerry 8703e is agreat phone on a solid network that give me better coverage (at least where I live) than any other wireless provider. RIM honestly "gets it" regarding convergence devices for BUSINESS and PROFESSIONAL users. If you're looking for something with a camera that excels at multimedia, don't bother looking at BlackBeries...get yourself a good camera and an iPod!24 out of 24 users found this user opinion helpful.

Lovin' this Blackberry!
by phoneho on January 12, 2007
Pros: Display, Ease of Use, Size & Weight, Bluetooth, Email. Mac Compatibility, Speakerphone
Cons: The only thing I might be inclined to comment on is the shabby ring tone selection. A quick google search and you're on your way!

Summary: ** This review is long, but I hope it's thorough enough to help someone make the decision to buy this phone! For me, I think the CNET rating is way low at 7.3 **
I'm a seasoned Blackberry user having used them for work over the past several years and it's easy for me to say this is the best one I've seen. When the 8000 series came out at Cingular I almost jumped. I'm glad I waited for the phone.
I've also tried Treo 650 and 700 by Sprint, and for some reason I tried the LG V which is not a smartphone. I think I left the smartphone world because they have so much crap I don't need and the functions that I do need never worked well anyway and I figured the V would fit the bill. Enter the 8701e...
This phone rocks. It's everything I need and nothing I don't need. I don't care about a camera, or an mp3 player, or instant messaging and things of that sort. I set up all the email accounts I wanted without looking at any instructions. The browser is great for what it is. The screen is gorgeous and the keyboard is backlit. The speakerphone is great too. That really completes the package, in my opinion. Great call quality. I use a Motorola H500 headset and it paired and works flawlessly.
I think a previous reviewer said it was hard to remove from the holster that comes with it. I think that each time a new blackberry is released it has another "trick" for it's removal from the holster. What works for me is removing it with my middle and ring fingers which seem to slide on either side of the lip in the front of the holster that gives extra support. I think it's a good thing or the phone to be secure in the holster. Keeps it's off the floor when it's handled by clumsy people like me.
Torn between this and the Q? DO NOT GET THE Q. I watched friends with Q's switch one by one. The Q is "cute" but it's not stable nor reliable. The blackbeery OS is SO much easier and more practical than the Windows Mobile OS. The screen is just as good or better on the 8703e and the Blackberry is much sturdier.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. This phone goes great with a Mac! Blackberry has software called PocketMac v 4.0 that allows you to sync with the Mac. I use Entourage for my email, contacts, notes, and calendar and I was synced in less than 2 minutes.
Well, that's about it. I guess I have to give my phone ******* ways up. I've found one I can stick with now. Maybe I'll get to take advantage of that "New After Two" after all!15 out of 15 users found this user opinion helpful.

LOVE IT!! Great Screen, Great Email, Great All Around!

Summary: I've had my blackberry 8703e for two days now and am loving it. I had the motoroloa Q but just wasn't liking it. Email was bad and the OS was buggy. I'm a first time blackberry user and I'm now a HUGE fan!!!
I now know first hand why so many people love blackberry's. They are VERY stable, the best phone on the market for email, the calender system functions great, The screen on this phone is AMAZING, the internet was lightning fast (much faster then my old Q). But best of all the phone quality on this is just wonderful! Like I said earlier I had the Motorola Q and the phone quality I thought was pretty good. When I switched to my blackberry 8703e I was amazed on how much better it sounded. Very clear both talking and listening. The reception was also great. I was in a parking garage yesterday that I used to get cut off with all the time and had no problems with my blackberry.
Though the phone doesn't have many multimedia capabilities this wasn't really something I need. I'm 29 and love tech stuff. I love being on the cutting edge. I thought getting a phone with the new Windows operating system, a phone that had video and a camera and bla bla bla was the cool thing to do...But when I thought about my phone usage over the past 6 months, I never took a picture or watched a video. I never used my phone as my MP3 player ( I love my ipod : ) so needing a phone with all these bells and whistles really wasn't a need of mine.
My main needs were a great phone, Great email, Great texting, great calender, Great internet connection, and a stable OS. The blackberry met all these needs and more!
Overall I'm a HUGE fan of this phone. I'm a first time blackberry user so I can't compare it to other phones but right now I'm SOOO happy with this purchase.
I would have given this phone a 10 but I still think we are 1 to 2 years away from having phones in the market that are true 10's!15 out of 15 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Before buying this BB device I was a hard core Pocket PC user. I have to admit that BB is alot easier to navigate and user friendly than most of the PC devices I had used. I am so glad that I had made the decision to purchase this device. It has all the necessary tools a person will need as far as browsing, email and SMSing. As for multimedia, I would not recommend this device and would refer you to the BB Pearl. I have been able to utilize all the features this devices has to offer including voice dialing, voice appointment scheduling, portable hot spot (tandum), e-mail forwarding and anything else you think you would need this device to do. The ONLY con I have found is the price you are needing to pay VZW for using all these tools. It's $45.00/mnth for the data plan to forward all your e-mail unlimited and also browsing then for an additional $15.00/mnth you can add the tandum feature to use it as a broadband modem for your laptop, which I've found very helpful. With syncing this up to my Microsoft Outlook it has been great to easy transfer all my contacts and e-mail addresses to my device! I hope this review helps someone make their decision on purchasing this device, it has been one of my best ones yet!

Exactly what I wanted and expected

Summary: First let me say that this is my first blackberry, so I can't really compare it to previous models. For me, this has done everything that I wanted from my smartphone, and it has done it well. I must also include that I first purchased the Motorola Q. Although I liked the functions of the Q, I had to return it for a few reasons (battery life, stability to name a couple). The BB 8703e that I exchanged it for has done quite nicely since. It's working great with my gmail account, and the OS, although limited in functions, seems to be quite stable and quick. The internet, even in EV-DO coverage areas is a little bit slow, but it does enough to get what I want out of cell phone internet. The only problem is that there is no slot for expanded memory. That's probably why the software also doesn't allow for media transfer. I wasn't really planning on replacing my iPod with the 8703e, but I'd be nice to have an easy way to transfer mp3's for ringtones and such. As it is, the only way to load mp3's is to upload them to a website and download them via the web browser (probably can email mp3's as attachments too but I haven't tried that yet). It's a pretty clumsy process considering how easy it was to transfer media files into my girlfriend's BB Pearl. But again, this phone isn't for music or movies, or photos for that matter (no camera). It's for communicating, and the phone, push email, IM, internet functions work great. I'd recommend this to anyone looking at smartphone options with Verizon.

Outstanding little machine!

Pros: Flawless email capability. Great battery life. Powerful and intuitive interface.

Summary: I bought this Blackberry to replace my v6600 PocketPC. The PocketPC was a nice novelty, because it did a thousand things. But it did them all badly. And the one thing I really needed it to do--emailing--it did REALLY badly and unreliably. I can actually put my trust in the Blackberry for its ability to get my email, and deliver my outbound email. Also, the interface makes emailing (or doing anything else) very easy. It all makes sense. Also, there are little coolness factors built into the experience, such as hitting space bar twice to input a period and a space after it (rather than hitting ALT-Peroid, Space. It may sound stupid, but it's a huge time saver, and the Blackberry has several little shortcuts like that which make using it very easy, and very quick. The screen is incredible. Pictures are displayed well, and web pages look sharp. The OS is very snappy, and never feels sluggish like my PocketPC always did.
My main problems with the Blackberry are that you can't attach files to emails you compose, and the PDF viewing is crappy. In fact, the BB's PDF capabilities are pretty useless. PDF's are broken up and sent to you as plain text (via OCR, it seems), and thumbnail images. Viewing PDFs for me is extremely important. This problem was cleared up by using DocHawk, which makes PDFs look like they were meant to be seen. If you get this Blackberry, invest in DocHawk...you won't regret it.
As I said, I also wich I could attach files to my emails. In a way it doesn't matter...I don't use the BB to creat content (pictures, Word documents, etc) so there really isn't much that I'll ever need to attach anyway. But if someone emails me an image or PDF I'd like the option to attach it to a new email and send it to someone else. As it is, if I want to send an image/pdf that was mailed to me I have to forward the email to them. So far, this hasn't been an issue. But it seems to me that a device which is meant to be an email powerhouse should offer email attachment abilities! ! !
Call quality on this phone sounds pretty solid. It only sounds muffled if you aren't setting the earpiece over your ear correc tly. So I don't know why CNET reviewers are complaining about that..A camera would be nice, but it's really just a toy, and I don't suffer for not having a camera on my BB. I never once used the camera on my PocketPC . If your'e looking for a gadget, skip this Blackberry. If you're looking for a tool, I very highly suggest you get this. I'm in love with my Blackberry!9 out of 9 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I've had this just over a week, and CNET user reviews definitely played a role in my purchase. It has worked very well as a phone, in my home city and on the road; excellent signal reception. The e-mail features, including syncing with my address book are excellent. I have not had a single disappointment with this phone to date.
A bit of history. In 2005 I bought an HP IPAQ from T-Mobile for my office phone. Great theory, but nothing worked well. Both phone and WiFi required very high signal strength to work. I don't know how much of the limitation was the fault of the device and how much was T-Mobile. I continued to have my personal account with Verizon and with my new every two plan upgraded to a Motorola 815; typical clamshell that got excellent CNET user reviews as a phone - and that was completely accurate. I simply assumed that smart phones had not come together. In the subsequent two years, I have several colleagues who've had a variety of smart phones, including the latest Treos, who were very disappointed.
Two friends had recently switched to the 8703 (with different carriers) and were extremely satisfied, so I made the plunge.
One note. I always find it interesting, as with this phone, when the user reviews are considerably better than the editor's ratings. I think that tells you more about real world use of the phone.
I'm sure we will only see better things in the future, but for now, I am completely happy with this phone.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I had the PPC-6700 from sprint. With all the features it was difficult to use efficiently. The 8703 is far better!! With built in GPS from Sprint and unlimited tethering to laptop as modem it cannot be beat. I was reluctant to get a Blackberry but I am so glad I did. This device flat out works and works well. I can check email instantly instead of having to take out a stylus and navigate many screens as the 6700. I am able to dial and receive calls with one hand, try that with the 6700. The Srint Telenav GPS is amazing with turn by turn directions. I hope verizon enabled theirs. This phone is amazing!!!

Summary: This is my 4th blackberry so I've been around the block. Its what I expect for the most part. I wish I could use attachments when composing e-mails still. I have the one for Sprint (8703e)and the internet (EVDO) is fast. The screen resolution is just perfect and now I can customize callers with there own mp3 ringtone (THANK YOU!)This is a winner, but beware if you have the Nokia BH-900 bluetooth headset. Its a tough cookie to pair with but I finally got after I received no help from Nokia's support group.

Summary: Previously owned Blackberry 7290, Treo 700w with Verizon service. This tool is hands down the best. The 7290 had a dull screen and was heavy, and a slippery design. The Treo with the Windows Mobile 5.0 was a sad joke. Push a button and wait 3 seconds for something to happen, rebooting daily, bad keyboard that didn't invite use, fat, heavy form factor, missed calls, touchscreen that always clicked on things in your pocket, battery life that lasted 1 day. The Treo should not have been unleashed on humanity.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh. My new Blackberry. All is right with the world. It's not heavy and wide like the 7290. Fits beautifully in my hand - more like a phone than the 7290. No antenna sticking up like the Treo. No crashing, crisp screen, slips in a pocket without dragging down your garment, no rebooting, 3 days on a charge, much better reception and clearer calls. I have no idea what CNET experienced with their review on call quality. Mine is better than any of my previous phones. The user ratings speak for themselves. Signal strength is better than the Treo. The 8703's keyboard is the best on a PDA I've experienced. Sync'd with Outlook in minutes and up and running. Simple, straightforward user interface.
My negative is the browsing experience. While it's by far the best on any PDA I've used, it still a tough experience. The browser software rearranges pages onto the small screen requiring significant scrolling and a challenging user experience, except on pages designed for mobile devices. Blackberry needs to work on their browser software. Maybe the iPhone will get this right.
Bonnie Cha at CNET seems to think the form factor is old school and lacks sex and sizzle. That's fine, but give me something that works quickly and easily. I have a business to run. I don't need (or want) a camera on my phone, and I'm very content with my 30GB iPod. Just read the other reviews by actual users and you get the picture. This is a great device and CNET's rating is just plain low. I would have4 given it a 9 due to the internet browser, but I gave it a 10 to send a message to CNET to be a little more careful with their reviews.
Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase.5 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.
