The good: The Samsung Galaxy Prevail has an elegant design and a surprisingly decent camera. It's eligible for Boost Mobile's reduced-rate plan.
The bad: Boost Mobile turned off the Prevail's Android 2.2 hot-spot capabilities. Also, call quality could be better.
The bottom line: The Samsung Galaxy Prevail marries sophistication with good value to become Boost Mobile's best smartphone.

Do not buy this phone!

Summary: Do NOT buy this phone! Don't make the same mistake I did. I understand that for the price, you can't expect the latest and greatest, so I didn't even try to install any fancy applications. I was simply expecting an elegant phone that would make/receive calls, and allowed me to send/receive emails. This piece of cr** doesn't even do that. I might have had a bad break, and maybe my device was defective. But after I called BoostMobile for support (I bought directly from their website), they refused to give me a refund. Their customer service is terrible (and I've been a customer for years). I repeat, do NOT buy this phone. You've been warned.

Nice Android Phone With Unlimited Everything
by amhouston on September 19, 2011
Pros: Provides typical Android phone performance with the added advantage of the Boost Mobile "Unlimited Everything" plan that will shrink my monthly bill down to $35 per month by next June. Zero dropped phone calls and pleasant sounding voice quality.
Cons: The phone signal indoors is a bit weaker than my prior phone, and the weaker signal seems to increase the rate of battery drain. Battery lasts only 7 or 8 hours per charge until you turn off gps, location services, auto synch, bluetooth, wireless, and th

Summary: I like the Boost Mobile "Unlimited Everything" plan that shrinks my payment down to $35 per month by next June. The plan begins at $50 a month plus $5 in State of Texas mandated "fees" . New Boost customers buying an Android phone after October 7, 2011 will begin at $55 per month, and shrink down to $40. If you become a Boost customer before October 7, you get the old, lower rate.
I forgot to mention the camera. It has just a 2 meg sensor, but it has "smart" software that permits dialing the exposure to get it as light or dark as you prefer. Outdoors, in sunlight, the colors are accurate and the photos would make nice 4 x 6 prints. Skin tones are natural and wrinkle free, due to lack of sharpness. Photos lack fine detail, so an 8 x 10 enlargement will not be sharp.. A slide show on a computer screen looks about as good as my $300 Canon camera. There is no flash, so indoor photos require the subject be next to a large sunny window, or under intense lighting. A test video clip looked about as good or bad as a video from the $20 video cameras that drug stores sells.
The Prevail is a typical Android phone, with all of the Android strengths and weaknesses. The Prevail includes the standard Android keyboard and a nice selection of apps. The Prevail has a slightly weaker signal indoors than my prior phone, which increases the drain on the battery. I extended battery life from 7 or 8 hours per charge to 18 hours per charge by using the included app manager to close gps, bluetooth, wireless and 3g. I turn on 3g from time to time to download Gmail and read headlines onGoogle news, then I turn the 3g off. Phone calls and texting works fine with 3g turned off.
The included Google Maps service works well but drains the battery at an amazing rate. About 2 hours of Google Maps drains the battery. It drains the battery so rapidly that even if the phone is attached to a charger, the battery continues to drain toward zero. Likewise, Netlix movies look great on the Prevail screen, but a 2 hour movie drains the battery to zero. Pandora Radio sounds great with good earbuds, but also drains the battery rapidly. I enjoy reading in bed with Pandora playing, but I attach the Prevail to its charger.
The included charger was VERY slow, taking 10 hours per charge. I am now using the charger from my old Sanyo phone, which brings the Prevail from zero to 100% in four hours. If you buy a car charger, buy one that has a "fast charge" mode, or the battery may drain even while the charger is plugged in.
I have had zero dropped calls, even with a weak signal indoors (moving 5 feet sometimes increases signal strength greatly). Voices sound clear and pleasant even on speaker phone. Music sounds amazingly good through high quality earbuds. You can add a 15gb or 32gb card and use the Prevail instead of an IPod. The sound quality is as good or better than an IPod.
I am buying an extra battery and keeping a charger with me at all times. This battery drain problem is typical of most Android phones in 2011. Learn to turn services off and resist Netflix and web videos unless you are plugged into a charger. If you plan to use the Prevail as a GPS device in your car, make sure you have a "fast charge" device in your car that can keep up with the astounding power drain of Google Maps, plus GPS.

The fixed focus is designed to provide a sharp photo with a subject that is 3 feet to 10 feet from the camera, which is the zone whre most photos are taken. Details of a building across the street will not be sharp, merely adequate. Outdoor "People" photos are very nice from 5 feet away.0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great phone at an excellent price
by shericlemons on September 14, 2011
Pros: Phone runs essential Android Apps for Web,email, and texts. Great features included with this phone, which are usually only available on much higher priced phones.
Cons: I have the same following views about most phones: I wish it had more built in memory. I wish it could accept a micro SD card with greater than 32 gig capacity. I wish it had a batter which would run longer between recharging.
Summary: A truly wonderful value at the $50.00 Amazon.com Price. A great value at the higher in store retail price as well.

It's a nice phone when it's not frozen which is often.

Are you able to tether on your Boost Mobile Samsung Prevail? I want to connect my computer to the internet via the Prevail, but when I call Boost they have no idea what I'm talking about.
Can anyone verify that they have in fact done this? If so, how?
Thanks!

overall this will be a nice phone but i was vary disappointing in boost i wanted something closer to a os 2.2 or better with more of the i1 specs the i1 has better specs or the same in everything save two areas 2.2 and data speed and while i know why they did not make a better phone they should have made two phones this one and one with twice the specs or had a sprint phone that they would allow to be activated0 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.
