Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket - black (AT&T) price range: $226.00
- Reviewed by: Nicole Lee
- Reviewed on: 11/09/2011
The good: The Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket has a beautiful 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display along with a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, an NFC chip, and support for AT&T's LTE network. It ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and has an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera.
The bad: AT&T's LTE network is only available in a few cities at the time of the Skyrocket's launch, it has a somewhat cheap, plastic feel, and you can't remove bloatware.
The bottom line: If you live in an area that gets AT&T's LTE network, we highly recommend the powerful and beautiful Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket.

Not easy to upgrade to ICS if have mac
by AdamBanes on July 29, 2012
Pros: better than iphone because has file management and can play movies in a variety of formats (not just mp4)
Cons: The upgradeable to ice cream sandwich cannot be done if you are a mac user. If you call samsung, they basically run you through a quick setup and then say to do the update on a PC.

Summary: Basically, this will be my last samsung device. First, the update to ice cream sandwich took way too long to come out - jelly bean is already out! Second, samsung is requiring users to download Kies to do the update rather than simply doing the update over the air. This is mainly being done to promote Kies which is samsung's version of itunes rather than it really being needed to do the update. Third, Kies for mac does not recognize many samsung phones including the galaxy s2 skyrocket. Thus, to do the update you have to "borrow a friend's PC" according to samsung support. Based on the foregoing, I would pass on samsung phones.
My recommendation is that if you want an android phone get the google phone. While the hardware is made by samsung, samsung does not manage the OS - rather google directly manages the OS and does the updates over the air. -
Best phone I ever had, so much power in small package.
by screwbedu on July 13, 2012
Pros: Great size, wonderful and large LCD screen, easy to use, has a great speakerphone, great reception (AT&T), super price, great music sound quality. I get about 24 hours of battery life with normal phone use.
Cons: Takes too much time to hang up a call from speakerphone.
Summary: I love this phone, my first Samsung product, but not the last.

Went back to Iphone
by RobC12345 on April 29, 2012
Pros: super fast internet, even in 3G only areas
brilliant screen, very bright
good size screen
excellent photo quality
very light phoneCons: not an HD screen
phone was very slippery, slipped out of my hands a lot because of the plastic backing
terrible layout for the android keyboard for the symbols and punctuation
camera didn't have features like auto-fix
No Ice Cream SandwichSummary: This was a fun phone, and i appreciate the integration of the task killer into Gingerbread compared to earlier versions of the android software but there are still some processes ...
Summary: This was a fun phone, and i appreciate the integration of the task killer into Gingerbread compared to earlier versions of the android software but there are still some processes that run in the background regardless of killing them in the task killer and/or they start back up on there own. I dislike having to go in every so often and having to "kill" these apps in fear that my battery will drain if i dont, that should be a fix to the next software where it should do it on its own or after a period of time. The battery life i found to be not as good as the editors had reviewed it, i charged the phone at least 2 times by 4pm and i had barely been using the phone all day. This was with LTE and WIFI on.
I thought while the images came out pretty good on the camera, there were no auto correct feature. I really disliked the android keyboard for typing text messages, it felt really like a chore for some reason when it came to symbols and punctuation. Also, the phone constantly slipped from my hands when trying to type texts (no cover installed)
I also dislike how fragmented the android updates are because of all the different types of android phones, who knows when the "official" update will be released and i refuse to do a "leaked version" update that may ruin the phone and void the warranty. It will only get worse as new phones come out and time goes by.
I have had the Iphone 4 for over a year or so and it felt like it excelled in almost every area compared to this phone (camera, software, HD screen, size, comfort in hand, battery life). The only thing i felt was better was the internet speed and ability to install different web browsers like firefox instead of using safari which is terribly slow.
I will wait for the new Iphone in June before upgrading again. -
Best smartphone I've owned.
by dreampoet on April 27, 2012
Pros: Lightning speed with LTE. Strong phone reception. Good voice operation features.
Cons: Don't expect a full day of use without recharging even with an extended battery. Voice dialing with bluetooth can happen but it's not 100%.

Summary: This phone replaced two: a Nokia 6300 I've had for five years and a Blackberry Torch. I've used Blackberrys for 15 years. Leaving one for an Android took time but really there is no comparison. It's like I moved up a decade in technology from 2002 to 2012. The surfing speed with LTE is very impressive, pulling up full web pages in almost laptop speeds. Coming from a Blackberry the voice features for google search, emails and text messages were nearly startling. Compared to my old Nokia the voice reception is quite good. I can receive, make or hold a call in my home where I previously could not. Using bluetooth for receiving a call is fine, voice dialing can be tricky. I've tried three ear pieces: Plantronics PRO, Blue Ant and Plantronics Voyager. The first two gave me no success, the Voyager was spotty. The SAR rating (.39) is surprisingly comforting given its size. It can fit into a jeans pocket snugly but I find the Otter with its optional belt carrying case (forget the awkward unreliable plastic clip-on) comfortable and unobtrusive. Good luck and if you have any solution for reliable bluetooth voice dialing please share.

Fast but poor battery.Need extended battery from amazon
by AlphaChecker on April 3, 2012
Pros: 4g is great! The phone act as my primary means to the internet with my PC
Cons: Battery life is horrible. I get around 4 hours use unplugged with original 1750mah battery. Highly suggest getting an extended battery from amazon to solve battery issues. I get 10 hours with QCell 3850mah extended battery
Summary: Great phone if you do not places with no charger

Battery life awful connectivity is an existential event
by crapola500 on February 28, 2012
Pros: Great screen, compact for such a large phone, wifi solid and when connected works fine.
Cons: Battery stays charged for 24 hours with no usage and everything turned off, indicator not even close to accurate. Connectivity weird, keeps failing to send text messages. Wife's Iphone 5 bars, my phone 1-2.
Summary: Hope it get better with an android upgrade. I don't know how much is Samsung, Att or android but it is annoying. I wish I had returned it in ...
Summary: Hope it get better with an android upgrade. I don't know how much is Samsung, Att or android but it is annoying. I wish I had returned it in the 30 day period. No cradle chargers yet available for this phone. And the bluetooth does not pair with my ATT land line base station. I do not use a cell phone that much so when it doesn't work I really notice it. My kids send 100's of texts on their cheap phones but my top of the line only sends about 35% of them.

- 4.5" screen
- 1.5GHz dual-core processor
- Superb camera and image processing
- A+ battery life
- Speech-to-text in SMS
- Google applications are A++
- WiFi tethering availableCons: - Preinstalled AT&T junkware
- Android 2.3.6 < ICS (although it is supposedly going to be upgraded...)
- Doesn't fit well in pockets, especially with an Otter Box
- Default applications are not as robust as expected
- Images are rotated 90 degreesSummary: To me, the "plasticy feel" is irrelevant because I got (and everyone should have) an Otter Box. I use the Firefox browser (available on Android Market) which is better than ...
Summary: To me, the "plasticy feel" is irrelevant because I got (and everyone should have) an Otter Box. I use the Firefox browser (available on Android Market) which is better than the stock browser and can be synced with your desktop browser. My wife has an iPhone 4S and I personally prefer my camera to hers as a matter of quality, but that's a close race. The screen resolution and pixel density certainly isn't a deal breaker (for me), as I don't think it's that much noticeably worse than the Nexus or the 4S, however it would be nice if it were better. It is also important to know that the stock offerings don't get the job done as far as utilities are concerned. It is advisable to download a third party antivirus, backup, file explorer, application killer, uninstaller, etc.

by rhonindk on February 9, 2012
Pros: Blazingly fast on LTE and no slouch on standard 3/4G
Runs everything I throw at it
Battery life is good - lasts all day with moderate - heavy use
Thin, thin, thin!!!
Great power management system

Very durable - I am tough on phones
CCons: Back cover is slippery in grip - recommend a skin or similar
Video, while 1080p, does not come as well as hoped. Still good, but have seen better in an 8mp camera.Summary: I highly recommend this phone!
I travel a lot and no matter where I travel, thishone works great.
