The good: The Sanyo Zio has a decent feature set and agreeable quality. We welcome Android OS 2.1.
The bad: The Zio's data speeds are rather slow and speakerphone calls were shrill. The Sprint ID experience is rather forced.
The bottom line: Sprint's Sanyo Zio will pale in comparison with Sprint's other Android handsets, but it offers functional features and serviceable performance at an affordable price.

SO disappointing!
by jgfbnow on December 27, 2010
Pros: Android market
Cons: The touchscreen doesn't work properly, apps don't load correctly, keyboard is too small. Won't accept a good Google account, nor an email password (x 2 phones!). Something inherently wrong with this phone! Very disappointing!
Summary: We bought two of these. Same experience with both! Keyboard is too small in either orientation. Letters either don't type at all, or else you get an adjacent letter ...
Summary: We bought two of these. Same experience with both! Keyboard is too small in either orientation. Letters either don't type at all, or else you get an adjacent letter instead of the one who wanted. Touchscreen is not responsive, ignores taps or chooses wrong application. Google account not accepted regardless of how many times we tried, which means we can't access several apps, nor the Android market. That's why we got these phones in the first place! Widgets difficult to trash, you can move them half way down screen, but they won't go to trash. All around, the worst cell phone I have EVER owned!

I would not recommend this phone
by jjenjjenjjen on November 27, 2010
Pros: Plenty of apps to choose from with Android Market. Navigation is great.
Cons: Difficult to use. Keyboard small and akward. Lost calls. Too many battery pulls to restart a frozen phone. Poor battery time with all unneeded apps disabled.
Summary: I have had probably 10 phones. This phone ranks near the bottom. I had to download better keyboard just to get usable keyboard functionality. I thought it would just take ...
Summary: I have had probably 10 phones. This phone ranks near the bottom. I had to download better keyboard just to get usable keyboard functionality. I thought it would just take a while to get used to the phone. I am a heavy phone, internet and text user and find this phone difficult to use. I also downloaded task kill to help with battery issue. I have numerous dropped calls, connectivity issues, battery pulls for a frozen black screen. Also my email does not work without an additional app which contains ads. Camera hard to use. Not user friendly.

Unresponsive screen, slow response, and buggy
by MBWD on November 7, 2010

Summary: I bought this the day it came out, replacing an OLD Samsung SPH-M610. This was my first smartphone, other than a first-generation iPhone that I've been playing with without actual cell service. The Zio is just an appalling phone. I returned it just before the 30 day period after making numerous efforts to improve its functioning.
Most significant among the phone's flaws are the unresponsive touchscreen and the slow operation. The touchscreen is a joke. It often takes several swipes to make it respond. When trying to type, this flaw becomes even more significant. It is difficult at best, and unusable at worst.
Also contributing to the Zio's unausability is the slow operation. It takes multiple seconds to respond to changing programs and other similar actions. Compared to the 1G iPhone, this thing is a kid's toy. It freezes (for several beats) for no reason at all. I got so fed up with the operation that I actually stopped using the phone for the last few days.
Finally, the Zio is buggy. Sometimes hitting the home button will get you to the home page. Sometimes, it does nothing at all.
Other flaws include the curved case. Because it is curved on the touchscreen portion, you can't use a screen protector effectively. The screen protector will not 'adhere' to the curved portion, so gunk builds up along the vertical edges of the touchscreen. Also, good luck finding a hard case for this phone that actually fits. The Amzer product just does not work. I went through three of these (luckily, all from Amazon) before I gave up.
I returned the phone yesterday and went back to my Samsung. Sprint was great about it, no questions asked -- full return of charges -- and put me back on my SERO 500 plan. I love their service, just don't get why they can't get any decent phones that aren't on 4G (which does not exist in most markets).2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Slow phone with numerous freezes
by Helixmoon on October 27, 2010
Pros: Slick looking. Decent screen
Cons: Mulitple freezes. Terrible battery life. Lack of phone use due to freezing. Lousy touch screen.

Summary: Since the get-go, the phone has been having problems with locking up, touchscreen failures, phone not receiving calls. Went to Sprint and they explained the updates Google Androids MUST always have. No problem with that. However, even with the updates, the issues continued. Will probably return and get another type of phone. It sucks that Sprint charges $35 upgrade fee but we'll see.
The phone is slick to the point it can easily be dropped without a proper case. If it wasn't the freezing it would be tolerable even with a short battery life. At least with that we can always have a charger around. Can't do much when the phone freezes and becomes a paperweight.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

First Smart Phone And Loving It!!!!
by musicmantv on October 23, 2010

Summary: Well this is my first smartphone/android and I have just switched from Verizon to Sprint because of Verizon's high costs. Overall this phone is extremely good for its price, it does have its defects but can be worked around with apps. Apps such as the Slideit can help with the lagged touchscreen. Slideit helps a lot with texting, and the music volume can be increased with several apps. I would recommend this phone to anyone who is looking for a good easy to use smartphone.

Zio is my first Smartphone
by DDStrat on October 23, 2010
Pros: 1. Good battery life for low to moderate usage
2. Light weight phone
3. Camera function is very easy to use and works wellCons: 1. Droid 2.1 does not offer true handsfree voice dialing (with or without Bluetooth)
2. Too short a timeout interval allowed to unlock phone before it goes back to standby- no adjustment is provided to obtain a few more seconds.Summary: I recently purchased the Sprint Sanyo Zio to replace my long standing Motorola Rzr VE20 which I accidentally damaged this summer. Summary: I recently purchased the Sprint Sanyo Zio to replace my long standing Motorola Rzr VE20 which I accidentally damaged this summer. I really wanted a new rzr as it was just about perfect for my purpose but rzr is phased out by Sprint.
I finally had to do the research into another replacement and found that a mid-capability smart phone was probably the best choice for me given the choices currently offered by Sprint. (My kids have several years of experience with smart phones and were helpful to explain the different mobile operating systems). I have no experience or real need for this level of capability as I am primarily a voice and sometime texting user.
So far the Zio phone with Droid are performing well. Battery life is adequate for my situation. My only issue is that droid 2.1 does not have a true handsfree voice dialer (with or without bluetooth). I did not think to verify this capability as I had assumed that this would be a given on just about any new phone.
After trying to troubleshoot what I thought was a fault with the phone (the manual leads you to believe the voice dialer is totally handsfree like all of my previous phones) and returning to the Sprint store for help; I finally found out that this is long standing issue with droid mobile operating system --- go to the following droid forum web site with the thousands of complaints from users for the droid voice dialer! California driving law requires handsfree operation so this lack is a problem in my mind.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1181
Overall I am becoming comfortable with the Zio and I am happy with it except for the voice dialer issue. I am hoping Sprint & Google will fix this in the upcoming Droid 2.2 releases.

Got it free, and it's worth every penny.
by bhartman35 on March 13, 2012
Pros: It's got a version of Android on it.
Cons: 1) The version of Android it has is now dated.
2) To get any sotrage out of it at all, you need a decent micro-SD card.
3) Even if you get a large micro-SD card for it, there's very little that you can transfer to the card that will give you a lot ofSummary: I'm stuck with this phone until 2013. Don't follow my example. Don't get this phone.

Decent phone for the price.
by robbin505 on February 25, 2011
Pros: Works well, battery life is ok, no freeze ups or problems. The apps run well and the phone makes and receives calls well.
Cons: Needs to be recharged daily(dependent on use of features). Flash not installed and not available at the time of this review on Adobe's website.

Summary: I like the phone. It has a the same problems as any touch screen phone that I have used with the interface, especially the keyboard. It has three home screens that are easily customizable. The phone call quality is really good and I have never had a dropped call. I live in Albuquerque and we do not have the greatest of technological advances here and I have no problems with service. The 3G speeds seem to be average and I have not noticed this phone getting really hot like other phones I have had when using apps, streaming videos, or downloading. The trackball works well and comes in handy when trying to select detailed items on pages. The size is good, not too big or small and not too wide. Using a lot of the features at once can drain the battery life but it does recharge fast and can usually hold a charge all day unless I am using GPS and downloading a lot of stuff while using Wi-Fi. That rarely occurs and those options are accessible from one of the home screens so they can be turned on and off without any hassle. The apps I have used work well and are easy to access through the market button. I get instant updates for my email and the IM is easy to use and access. This is my first Android phone so I really don't have anything to compare it to as far as Android phones go. This is based off of my experience with other phones I have had previously. For the price and features I would recommend this phone. I have not had any problems with it except for the Flash issue which may be a problem for some users. Overall a good phone and a nice accessory to stay connected.
The phone updated to Android 2.2 today, my opinion has gone way up. The phone now has flash 10.1, five homescreens that are easily managed and change with the swipe of a finger. The fact that this phone has a mini sd card slot for extra memory, nice screen size, and clear picture makes this a great starter phone for Android users. This phone has Wi-Fi which at the price is rare. I would say the price, features, and Android 2.2 firmware make this phone a steal for entry to mid-level users. This is an easy phone to root and use as a Wi-Fi hotspot for people on the go. As for the issues I have seen in this review such as poor battery life, yes it can be quite draining if you leave the Wi-Fi antenna on and background data. Both are not essential and easily turned off. Look at any of the phones on the market, you can't get long battery life and a small handheld device with current battery technology. The screen has been easy for me to see in all kinds of light and I live in the desert.
