The good: The T-Mobile Shadow offers a fresh take on Windows Mobile smartphones, with a sleek slider design and interface. The entry-level device also has an affordable price tag and features a beautiful display; Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; a 2-megapixel camera; and various messaging capabilities.
The bad: The call quality of the Shadow could be better, particularly the speakerphone. The navigation wheel is slippery, and performance can be sluggish when numerous apps are in use.
The bottom line: For the young professionals who have outgrown their cell phone but aren't quite ready for a business-centric device, the T-Mobile Shadow offers a nice compromise, as the entry-level smartphone brings the capabilities of a Windows Mobile smartphone into a fresh and affordable package.

Amazing Phone
by shawn015 on November 5, 2007
Pros: great screen, wifi, navigation, the new screen format which is much easier to use, and almost everything else.

Summary: In regard to all the other people that were looking forward for a good phone, this is deffinetly a must. I was also considering purchasing a blackberry curve, but as soon as i saw the shadow hitting the shelves, i just had to get it.
The phone is so much more apealing in person, especially the feel of the phone.it is much more of a better phone than a sidekick in regard to features and losing the complications of other smartphones. the new screen format is just so much easier and much fun at the same time. the screen is great even though a lot of the icons arent as crisp as they seem but its bright enough to please.
the wifi is great. and the comm manager is really something appreciated. you might be familiar with that feature from the Dash.
The camara isnt bad itself. people must realize that a phone is a phone, but having these features is really good enough. you cant have the job of a professional camara ona phone. all the features must be appreciated and very special thanks to tmobile and htc to produce such a device.
the device is very consumer friendly but the only thing that was really dissapointing was the battery life. it maybe a while for the battery to get acustomed to the charges but battery went for an average 18-20 hours for me or it maybe the fact that i use the phone constantly.
another thing to mention is that this is a smartphone so battery drainage should be expected running the massive amount of apps the phone features. what ever the case might be, i'll get back to you on the battery life soon. anywho, the battery life is fine and nothing much to be worried about, but i doubt the phone can be taken out on weekend trips or anything like that.
in conclusion, the phone is just enourmous on what it can do. packed full of features still waiting to be discovered on my part. deffinetly one of the best phones i had ever used and especially me upgrading from a sidekick. im much happier with the shadow than teh sidekick. such a great phone with such a low price tag is something amazing.
also, i have read upon people complaining about how bad the call quality is right after they have purchased the phone. the thing is that you have to make sure you have taken off the plastic cover over the screen. the thick plastic covers the ear speaker making it hard to hear the other person over the line.
T-mobile shadow users, enjoy! If you haven't gotten it yet you should.8 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

I Gotta Admit...
by boarding101 on March 6, 2008
Pros: Too Many to List
Cons: One GIANT con

This is my first 'smartphone' and it seems almost like ...Summary: I gotta admit that even though I was expecting A LOT from this phone, It had more than I thought!
This is my first 'smartphone' and it seems almost like a standard cell phone because of the 'fun' interface instead of the typical 'buisness like' interface.
I also usually agree with Cnet's reviews of phones that I've had but with this one I DISagree with in a lot of ways!
REVIEW-
First off, I'm NOT going to complain about some hardware things the phone wasn't designed to have like a FULL QWERTY keyboard or touch screen, but I WILL complain about certain things the phone clearly should have but doesn't.
CALL QUALITY- Was good and VERY clear but was a TINY bit quite. Not "Speak up, I can't hear you...WHAT? Apple or #&$*Hole?" I could cleary hear the person and they were loud enough for me but some people like the ear piece to be blaring. The speaker phone was surprisingly also VERY good! The person on the other end sounded VERY GOOD and they said I did as well! Overall, Call quality was above average.
And yes, I DID remove the plastic covering which is a VERY common mistake that makes some people unhearable.
PROS-
Everything you've already read from other reviews but alsdo some others...
2 Mega Pixel CAMERA- The camera is VERY GOOD! Cnet's photo is just a bad example. All you have to do is adjust the settings and the camera is one of the best I've seen! Whites are whites, blacks are blacks and colors are colors - I've seen NO orangey effects since I changed the settings! Even though the camera does NOT have Auto-Focus, the pictures look about the same as the ones taken with my LG EnV that DOES have Auto-Focus.
CAMCORDER/VIDEO RECORDER- I read on another site a review from one of it's editors saying "The camercorder is highly unimpressive. The videos are jerky and grainy." Well, all I have to say about this guy is that his vision needs to be checked because his eye sight must be jerky and grainy whether he's watching a video or not! The videos are very SLIGHTLY grainy and not jerky either - when compared to my LG EnV, the video actually looks better on the 'Shadow' even though the LG EnV records in a higher resolution(I don't understand but oh well) Both of them record/play their videos smoothley with out jerkieness but the 'Shadow' just looks better even in full screen! The 'Shadow' has a max video recording resolution of 177x146 while the EnV has 320x(I think 280). Again, I'm not sure how it's possible how a lower resolution video can look better!
Also, the video recorder can record a single video until the available memory is used up with out being cut of at a certain time limit like some other phones. The audio's timing is in line with the video as well.
Remember: changing the camera/video settings will fix the default 'orangey effect')
The screen is FANTASTIC! Great resolution (QVGA which is the best out right now). Even though it only displays 65,000 colors instead of some other phones that display 262,000 colors, I honestly can NOT tell the difference!
LAG- The phone does take 2-3 seconds to open certain apps but not all of them. The internet in VERY slow over T-Mobiles EDGE service which isn't nearly as fast as other networks 3G service. The internet will run alot better if you hook it up to a Wi-Fi conection but the phone does NOT support T-Mobiles 'HotSpot@Home" service where you can talk at a HotSpot for free but it DOES have the ability to use Wi-Fi for internet as I mentioned as well as the 'My Favs' feature.
The accessories it comes with besides the charger are pretty nifty - There's a case(Not the best in my opinion so I got a different one but the included one might be good enough for most people), ear bud headphone that are also the hands free headset, a USB cable to link it to your computer and a weird adapter that I will mention in the CONS section.
The GIANT CON-
The ONLY jack for one of the many accessories is an odd shape that ONLY fits the ear bud headphones/hands free headset but NOT the USB cable or even the dand CHARGER!!! What the HECK!!! You have to use an adapter just to charge the phone?!?! What if you lose the aadapter?! You have to buy a new one JUST TO CHARGE THE BATTERY!!! One decent thing with the adapter is that you can charge the phone and have you headset plugged in at the same time but you still CAN'T CHARGE THE PHONE WITH OUT THE ADAPTER!!!
I would give it a perfect 10 if it wasn't for the STUPID adapter issue, but I instead give it an 8.5 (they only let you pick a solid number rating like 8 or nine instead of a number like 8.1/.2/.3 etc.)
If your getting a new phone with T-Mobile and your looking for a 'smartphone' or just a standard high end cell phone, this is a phone to DEFINITELY look into!7 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great phone, Many features

Summary: The Shadow is a great phone. I had a Samsung t809 before which I loved and I needed a phone that had all the features of the t809 plus more. The camera takes great pictures and the display is beautiful. The videos I downloaded to the phone played at a very good quality. It's faster than other windows mobile phones I experienced which is a definite plus. The navigation button is fun to use especially when you're bored. When I read the other reviews about the call quality I was definetly shocked but thats what happens when you don't take off the screen protector that also covers the speaker. Trust me the call quality is good and the antennae picks up great signal. The internet is super fast when you connect it to wifi but it's a little slow when it's not connected but you can't blame the phone for that. The battery life is great when the phone is idle but when you actually use the phone its good for the whole day (from 5:30a.m. to around 11:30p.m.). I definetly recommend this phone to everyone it has everything.

Summary: I loved using this phone, but had to charge it constantly. T-Mobile offered to send me a free backup battery, but really, it's a wireless device. I need the thing to work when I'm on trip away from an outlet. I reluctantly swaped it for the more utiliarian Curve, which I am learning to love, despite the annoying candy bar style (I hate having to lock the keyboard to avoid making accidental calls), but I wish the manufacturer would fix the flawed battery issue.

What's not to like? Casts a shadow over other smartphones.
by rob54w on December 22, 2007
Pros: Big screen, good keyboard, scroll wheel, free wifi, great , good solid feel
Cons: Call/End keys some times difficult to press, screen is very vulnerable to fingerprints and smudges

Design 10/10
The Shadow is one of the best-looking smartphones around. Everyone who has seen it is very jealous of its extremely good looks. It is sleek, but has a subtle beauty, which I prefer over the other phone with flashy and gaudy looks. The screen is absolutely fantastic, but is annoyingly prone to fingerprints and smudges. Overall, amazing looking.
Software 8/10
This phone makes Windows Mobile neat and fun, without losing any versability or productivity. Email and texting is smooth, internet is great (with an Opera Mini download), and T-Mobile and HTC really took their time making sure every aspect of this phone is beatiful and functional. Sometimes the task manager is slow to start up, but definatly not anything deal-breaking.
Keyboard 8.5/10
People often complain about this keyboard, but I happen to love it. TX9 is miles ahead of T9.
Value 10/10
This phone is really cheap at $150. You get everything that Windows Mobile Standard has to offer in a great looking package for much less than most other phones.
I couldn't recommend this phone any more. I love it.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Well-designed phone
by cousin_vinni on December 16, 2007

Summary: This phone is one very nice new product. It does not immediately strike you as a smart phone, but once you turn it on, it's obvious that it is. The SureType keyboard is a lot easier to use than I thought it would be, I've never used before. The screen on the phone is simply gorgeous, nice big, much bigger than the Tmobile Dash. The phone runs windows mobile 6.0, and has many nice features, such as the ability to edit Word and Excel documents (which u can't do on the Dash), view MS powerpoint slides (for those of you with microscopic vision), perform voice commands ( which do work to varying degrees of success), assignment of any key on the keyboard to programs or to speed dialing. It is a bit difficult at first to find your way around on the phone, given how many submenus are, but it is easily learnable. call quality is good, call volume is good, though the speaker phone has a little bit low call volume. It also has Wi-fi, which is very helpful (note, it does not work on T-Mobile HotSpot). MicroSD card capacity is 4 gB. The performance of the phone is pretty quick, quicker than I expected for a Windows device. I am not sure at this point is medical software works on the phone, as that is a big use of mine, but it seems like it should. The phone is relatively compact, and dimensions, it is about equal to my previous RAZR, but a little bit heavier, but not onerously so and slips into your pocket just easily. I highly recommend this for anyone seeking a phone that is not a absolutely full featured PDA (note: no touchscreen) like the Wing or ATT 8525. The jog wheel in the middle is great for navigation, esp one-handed navigation. Note though a big advantage to this is that this phone is very easy to use as one-handed operation, while fullly featured PDA phones are not, given that you need two hands to slide open the phone and type on the keyboard.

Excellent Smartphone
by trevorwilliamson on November 7, 2007
Pros: Great push email (via Exchange) but also aggregates all of your POP3 and IMAP email accounts as well.

Summary: I think this is a very, very good phone and probably the best "lightweight" Windows mobile 6 phone out there right now. My Windows Mobile journey started with a Moto MPx200, went to a Audiovox SMT5600, then an MPx220 (was on Crackberry's for a while) then to an iMate SPL and finally with the HTC Shadow.
It is truly the best of the bunch so far. I just wish they would've dropped a speedier processor in it but it does have a fair bit of ROM so it keeps up with me OK.
Right now I have 1 Exchange, 1 gmail, 1 Hotmail, 1 IMAP and 3 POP3 accounts on the phone and all "new mail" notifications show up in a single screen (along with text and MMS). It is very cool.
Highly recommended.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

out dated turns to crap
by low351orig on June 21, 2010
Pros: inbox for messages is unlimited i loved that alot. but if you let it build up i can start to ruin the phone with lag i would know had to replace is cause ot that.
Cons: very easily broken if you drop screen can break easy. very laggy, battery life is alright but not if you constantly text.

Summary: basicly this phone is good when its not lagging or not broken. if you take top notch car of your phone and delete all texts fast make sure this phone isnt running to much stuff. its great other than that its crap breaks way to fast and out dated just spend the extra 50-100 for a better phone than this,

I'm pretty sure mine is possessed.
by AndySanch on April 16, 2010
Pros: The scroll wheel is responsive and the phone has a very durable feel.
Cons: Short battery life, the call quality is lacking, you need to do a lot of tweaking to ensure your phone doesn't unlock itself and pocket dial your MyFaves, and do not use this phone as your alarm clock. Ever.
Summary: At first glance, it's a pretty good looking phone. I picked it up for just what it was, an entry-level smartphone. But don't be fooled by its outward ...
Summary: At first glance, it's a pretty good looking phone. I picked it up for just what it was, an entry-level smartphone. But don't be fooled by its outward attractiveness. The phone has its issues. The T-Mobile people will tell you the battery life is superb, but be prepared to charge this phone at least once a day, more if you use it heavily. Of all the phones I've had, the quality of my calls has never been worse.
On numerous occasions, my phone unlocked itself while I was traveling with it and dialed the first person on my MyFaves list. You have to customize your phone a lot to ensure this doesn't happen, because the default makes the phone unlock if the slider is raised even slightly, which can happen from time to time just by walking.
The alarm is the worst. If you use your phone as your alarm, like I do, this phone makes you consider alternatives. First off, you have only two options for when you want to set your alarm, for Weekdays or Weekends. Sometimes, you can disable the alarm, but it will still go off anyway, and sometimes the alarm goes off three times in a row for no reason. I've double checked to make sure the alarm is truly off many times, and yet it still goes off. There's no indication that the phone acknowledges that your alarm is on or off, so you just have to hope it's doing what you tell it to. And if you turn your phone off before the alarm goes off, it doesn't matter when you turn it on, the alarm is going to go off the moment you do it. And since the phone is booting up, you alarm is going off and it's not responding to your "Dismiss" command.
Unless you're getting this phone for free, I can't recommend it. Even if you were, there are much better alternatives for free from T-Mobile. I'm ditching this phone for an Android ASAP.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
