- Bottom Line:
- Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 isn't perfect, but it's the best dictation software available. We don't find this upgrade necessary for the most basic dictation, although new features may benefit heavily accented English speakers and those who rely heavily on voice commands.

The good: Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 adds support for regional accents; new Voice Shortcuts for Vista and the Web, including YouTube and Wikipedia; hands-free browser commands; no new system requirements; custom-built Bluetooth headset option.
The bad: The pricey license of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 serves only one user; rocky installation on Windows Vista; no Mac option; poor audio quality on included headset led to poor results.
The bottom line: Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 isn't perfect, but it's the best dictation software available. We don't find this upgrade necessary for the most basic dictation, although new features may benefit heavily accented English speakers and those who rely heavily on voice commands.

Great for prose; awful for using computer hands-free
by brw12 on April 6, 2009
Pros: When you need to write a long e-mail or transcribe something you have written out on paper, Dragon works wonderfully.
Cons: Whenever you are doing something that does not include the context of grammar and full sentences, Dragon breaks down in ugly ways.

Summary: I find it really does recognize my words 95% of the time; I'm using it Dragon 9 Professional right now to write this, and it is saving me a tremendous amount of typing. I have repetitive strain injury, so I simply could not use the computer otherwise. But Dragon simply isn't there yet when it comes to common computer tasks such as browsing the Internet, filling in forms, switching between programs, or (God forbid) copying something from one program to another, Dragon is not only cumbersome, it simply does not work much of the time. A typical monologue: "Page up." (Nothing happens) "Page up." (Nothing happens) "Page up!" (Dragon recognizes 'page' and opens the 'Page' menu. "Aargh!" (I hit the page up key myself). Case in point: while typing this I could not get Dragon to stop opening menus, and even randomly took me to a completely different webpage so that I lost this text. Then it simply stopped transcribing my words. I ended up having to type half of this.

DRAGON 10 IS TERRIBLE, NUANCE TECH SUPPORT IS UNUSABLE
by pierrino on April 21, 2009
Pros: NOTHING AT ALL
Cons: it doesn't work with word 2007. It is poorly compatable with Vista. Tech. support is the worst in the industry

Summary: I have owned all the Dragon products. This 10 is not nearly as good as the previous 9.5. Incompatible with Vista and Word 2007. It constantly requires you to create new users and new user files. They brought out a Version 10 just to sell software. Huge waste of time.I got gypped when I bought it. Tech support was not only not helpful, but totally incomprehensible, insulting and nasty. I absolutely un-recomend this wretched regression. Shame on the swine that made it. I want my money back. I went back to and am using 9.5 Pierrino Mascarino 323-276-8984 pierrino@mascarino.com

After 20 yrs of tendinitis in hands, finally better.
by cfaskesenn on October 22, 2010
Pros: Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, web-based EDI, government payments online, QuickBooks, surveys, AOL, and Internet Explorer. Each has its ups and downs, overall it's a lifesaver. Can finally get my work done without having to stop because of pain.
Cons: Mostly navigation problems in folders and subfolders. Works intermittently in Facebook. All commands do not work in Adobe Acrobat. Inserting in existing text can be irritating..especially combining keyboard with DNS.
Summary: Windows navigation... I'm not having a lot of luck with that. Complicated program names, 50+ shortcuts on my taskbar. Folders and subfolders. Complicated program names. I'm still having ...
Summary: Windows navigation... I'm not having a lot of luck with that. Complicated program names, 50+ shortcuts on my taskbar. Folders and subfolders. Complicated program names. I'm still having to use my hands to get to the files that I need to open and save.
Excel...working pretty good after building macros. Anything that has shortcut keys can have macros in DNS. Very good at industry-specific nomenclature after training (use edit vocabulary). Able to train "on the fly"and keep working. Very good at data input, although it could be faster at moving between cells.
Adobe Acrobat ... fair to middling, I think that's why they sell their own PDF software.
I don't think you could entirely use this hands-free. But the use of hands is minimal after several weeks of training. Just be ready to jump in with your hands if it gets stuck. So far it looks like the time it takes to do a task is about the same for me, but I could see where it would be a timesaver for people who don't have advanced typing skills.
I can only use it is for basic commands in image editing software.
This program is a memory eater, we are still on XP here and I have my memory bumped up as high as it can go. I have to power down and reboot every day. Usually when it starts messing up, it's time to reboot.
Overall it's worth buying, especially if it saves you on medical Bills.
The best advice I can give is to take it home and train it for a few weeks before you try to take it to work. That will save you a lot of frustration, and you'll be able to start working right away.
I expect it to continue to improve as I continue to train it.
