McAfee Total Protection 2010 (1 User) price range: $12.50

The good: Two massive steps in the right direction kick off the 2010 version of Total Protection: the new interface and the overhauled performance. This version should go a long way to fixing McAfee's battered reputation.
The bad: It might not be clear enough that running a full scan when installing will significantly speed up later scans. There's not much in the way of easily accessible live support, either, so if something goes wrong, it may take a while to get a human on the phone.
The bottom line: McAfee Total Protection 2010 hits many of the right notes. It's easy to use and it's effective, but years of below-average releases will likely leave many users unwilling to give it a try.

Horrible experience with McAfee
by pats71 on April 5, 2010
Pros: There is nothing at all to like.
Cons: After installation, the computer (an i7 running XP pro) would freeze on the desktop after start up. Three live chats with McAfee support only made the problem worse. The computer ended up in the repair shop and I got a $190.00 repair bill.

Summary: After a year using McAfee Internet Security, I upgraded to Total Protection. Immediately after installation the computer would intermittently freeze on the desktop after start up. Using live chat support and remote access, they removed the software and reinstalled it. They also had used a preinstall system cleanup tool and did a clean install. Now the computer immediately froze on the desktop after start up. Two more live chats and remote access grants later (including with the computer running in safe mode) they asked if the computer could have a virus. I pointed out their product was supposedly preventing that. They could not resolve the issue. They told me if the computer froze again to take it in for repair and then recontact them. After 5 days in repair, I got my computer back with free Avast anti virus loaded on and a $190.00 bill. The technician told me that something in the McAfee software was corrupting a Windows licensing file causing the computer to freeze. He advised against reinstalling unless McAfee could guarantee they had a resolution. I recontacted McAfee live chat for a refund and after explaining the problem, he turned me over to a tier 1 tech who couldn't resolve the issue. After waiting a couple of days, a tier 2 tech called me and another remote access took place. Tier 2 could not figure it out, could not guarantee it wouldn't happen again, would not cover the repair bill and said due to the software conflict they could not reinstall the product on my computer. What horrible customer support! I will never trust a McAfee product again. So far I like Avast and probably will upgrade to their suite.

by CheckG on March 20, 2010
Pros: Recently I had emails sent to me with Trojans from some yahoo account and I use Incredimail and McAfee Total Protection 2010 automatically removed both Trojans without me doing anything, now that is Intelligent Security. Its excellent!
Cons: Some settings need to be set ON as a default.....there by the user does not have to do anything!
Summary: I've tried most of the security suites out there and nothing comes even close to McAfee Total Protection 2010, its easy to use, protection is GREAT......and its looks ...

A Great Product!
by alwinwinjoe on February 26, 2010
Pros: It has improved its detection rates with the Artemis technology.A new and simplified interface was also a new one.
Cons: Still a system hog but if you have enough memory for it then you must try it.
Summary: It was a great idea merging the Artemis technology with the 2010 release but I was expecting a better change in the system performance. Well, it's still a great ...

Fast,Intelligent and productive!
by Nortonpal on February 28, 2010
Pros: I use McAfee 8 days and is very happy Many years I mainly used Norton (before McAfee I tested Norton 360.4). First of all McAfee has amazed me with speed of work and some features. I like production Symantec, but in the near future I will use McAfee.
Cons: Small delay of work of the computer (some seconds) during updating.

Much improved, solid product
by nimgup8 on February 28, 2010
Pros: Having used the earlier version, this was a huge improvement - tight intuitive UI, defaults that make sense, and rock solid protection. This product definitely rocks!
Cons: Still won't work if you don't have enough RAM, I'd say you need at least 512 MB if running XP

"...There is no user override for malicious files...."
by baddy_3- on March 2, 2010
Pros: an all-in-one bundle. nice interface. 'McAfee' brand.
Cons: there are free alternatives , competitive and with "user override" (why do some people assume ALL consumers to be equally dumba** ?)
Summary: good security app for an average user. a narrow road for those who like tweaking/tuning/destroying their pc.

Terrible on Windows 7

Summary: My new computer was up and running perfectly for 10 minutes before I installed McAfee Total Protection. As soon as it installed, I received a blank, white screen instead of the McAfee screen. I used another computer to go to McAfee Support where I saw a notice that the McAfee updates were causing problems. I tried all 3 fixes listed on McAfee's site. I then emailed them. I spoke on the phone 2x, more than an hour each time, with support techs. The first one almost fixed it. The second one finally said the problem I had was with a "corrupt" Internet Explorer 9. I am not an idiot. My IE 9 was not corrupted at all. I asked the support person to uninstall McAfee on my computer. He referred me to McAfee Techmasters, which is a fee based service! I again told him to uninstall the program. I could not uninstall it myself because the tool was disabled and could not be enabled. He finally uninstalled it from my computer. Do yourself a favor and stay away from McAfee. On top of nearly destroying my brand new computer, they tried to get me to use the McAfee paid Techmasters service for the problems McAfee Total Protection created. The support person partially uninstalled it. I was able to work around the uninstall tool and completely uninstall McAfee Total Protection and all the spyware it had implanted into my computer. I hope this review helps at least one person avoid the nightmare I endured.

Summary: I have used McAfee for several years. However, recently I had a bad experience which I felt that McAfee should have prevented. While surfing the Internet for a product, McAfee suddenly closed the program down advising me that a virus was detected and that McAfee had taken care of it. This was absolutely wrong as the computer crashed in a few minutes. Now I believe that after the first warning I should have downloaded and run an antivirus program other than McAfee and cleaned the computer. The Start button would not bring up anything so I could not get to the control panel to run a System Restore. Most fortunately for me, I had Google Chrome installed sometime back whose icon still showed on the screen. Using Google Chrome I was able to get to the Internet and download and run a free antivirus program which found several trojans which were effectively deleted and made the computer usable again.
