Parallels Desktop 8 - Reviewed by: Jason Parker
- Reviewed on: 09/05/2012
The good: Parallels Desktop 8 now has support for both Mountain Lion and Windows 8, with a ton of new tweaks that make it easier to work seamlessly between the two operating systems.
The bad: Working between the two systems takes time to get used to. If you're used to just one of the systems, you should expect a learning curve for working in both.
The bottom line: Any Mac user who needs to use Windows or Linux software or needs to test software in different environments will appreciate Parallel Desktop's seamless integration, with plenty of little features that make the switching experience as smooth as possible.

Summary: As a long time power PC user, I finally grew disgusted with all the craziness and instability of my PCs. Went to the Mac about 2 years ago and never looked back... until I tried to run the Mac versions of some of my long-time suites. Let's face it, there are just some software developers who do not recognize that Macs are serious computing platforms, and their Mac versions frankly, suck! So I really like having a familiar and stabile platform to run my PC applications, and Parallels 8 is just what the Dr. ordered. Very stable, not buggy at all, I love it.

Summary: My work demands to share outlook file (pst) with other PC's. Outlook for MAC does not work with pst. For that reason, I have to have a Windows system in my MAC. I decided to install Win XP Pro becuase is lighter than Win 7. So Parallels 8 can run XP very faster and my work becomes also faster. Win XP also starts up and shuts down faster. If you have to use Win inside a MAC for any reason, I recommend using Parallels with not heavy Windows systems to get results which exceed your expectations.

Parallels is like magic. Seriously.
by mixwiz on January 31, 2013
Pros: Parallels Desktop 8 lets you effortlessly and transparently run two state-of-the-art operating systems simultaneously with very little performance penalty.
Cons: In light of the fact that Parallels Desktop 8 lets you run two completely different operating systems simultaneously, the small performance penalty goes to the vanishing point.
Summary: When you consider that Parallels Desktop 8 lets you run an entirely separate and different, full-featured, state-of-the-art operating system on your computer - powered by your native host operating system ...
Summary: When you consider that Parallels Desktop 8 lets you run an entirely separate and different, full-featured, state-of-the-art operating system on your computer - powered by your native host operating system - and when you consider the sorcery required to make this happen, it's astonishing that Parallels Desktop also manages to be one of the most intuitive, transparent, effortless, trouble free and reliable applications of all of the ones that I use. It really is like having a whole separate, full-speed and fully-capable computer. I can't recommend Parallels Desktop more highly.

Parallels is without equal.

Summary: I am a former PC user/lover. There are certain programs that I use that are not available for Mac. I tried both Fusion and Parallels, and Parallels won handily. It is faster, easier to use, more intuitive and much more user friendly. The appearance is crisp and the resolution is fantastic. It is truly an outstanding piece of software.

A Software Hell!
by GoldenHu on December 31, 2012
Pros: None. Well, maybe not: It's a nice way to lose money if you have some extra laying around and don't know what to do with it. Your time too for that matter.
Cons: Doesn't work (at least for me). Messes with your OS. High risk to use. Customer service's solution could take hours and cost more from the phone call itself than the defective product.

Summary: Version 7, no problem, Version 8, a total mess. It wouldn't connect to my Windows 8 Pro and made it so that when I later tried to Bootcamp into Windows 8 it caused some big issues there too. Customer service was kind but wanted to take control of my computer as well as delete and reinstall Windows 8! Since the 8 was an upgrade from 7 he told me that there was the possibility of having to reinstall that too. Of course all of this could take hours and with no guarantee that it would work. I was pretty irritated at his illogical responses to my direct questions although he tried to be really polite but seemed stuck in a situation where he couldn't win due to the defective product and Parallels hard-assed keeping your money back policy. I felt bad for him while at the same time I was angry at the company, but I hope he can another find a job which would support his ethics.
My recommendation: Research before you buy! -
Piece of junk not worth $80 or $50 for upgrade.
by teabing on September 23, 2012
Pros: Does what it says it will do but doesn't tell you that it will also mess up your computers OS. Version 7 works just fine with Mountain Lion.
Cons: If you use this product and also use Micromat's TechTool Pro 6.0.5 you will find that Volume Rebuild will always give you a red number which usually means a change that you don't want to make. It will also not allow for complete Volume Optimization.
Summary: Buy this and suffer though a messed up OS. Would give it no stars if possible. Wasted a good 8 hours of time dealing with Micromat and Apple just to ...
Summary: Buy this and suffer though a messed up OS. Would give it no stars if possible. Wasted a good 8 hours of time dealing with Micromat and Apple just to find that Parallels 8 is a piece of junk and was the problem. Have no idea how many files it damaged and each one I find Parallels is going to hear about it.
