- Bottom Line:
- QuickBooks Premier 2008 remains the top small-business accounting program. Its guidance for novices is top-notch, and it comes in a variety of editions tailored for specific industries. Version 2008 isn't an essential upgrade for QuickBooks 2007 users, but it's a good buy for users of earlier versions, and for anyone new to accounting software.

Be afraid... be very afraid...

Pros: Lots of great gimmicks...

...just too disgusted to go on. Used to love this product, from the 90's to 2004. Tech support has gone overseas and you have to get passed back and forth to get anywhere near a straight answer. Just try calling, even the automated system sounds like stepping back to the 80's.
Aside from the Company itself, the accounting part of the software (that was obviously complete in 2001) is still as good as any of the other packages. Having to deal with Intuit, priceless (as in not gonna do it).6 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

No real improvement over previous versions

The 2008 version you're forced to upgrade to doesn't have any new features I use so I am paying to use my existing software I bought four years ago. Should this be legal? This is not software, it is subscriptionware.

Like everything else, as QB ages it gets fatter and slower
by karmakelli on March 17, 2008

Summary: I've been a QB user since 1998, inc Pro versions from 2002, 2005, and now 2008. Why do I upgrade every three years? Intuit FORCES me to ... they discontinue payroll support and credit card processing for the older versions. Without the ability to process the funds coming in OR going out, an accounting program is pretty useless.
My daily backups in QB 2005 took maybe a minute for 35 meg. The SAME DATA FILE now takes about six minutes and runs 60 meg. QB 2005 took around 30 seconds to open. QB 2008 takes more than a minute.
They've added security features, but in a lot of cases what used to take one or two steps now takes five or six ("You want to turn on credit card security features? Are you s-u-r-e...???" etc. etc.)
I was able to turn off the annoying "Home Navigation" screen, and so far the solicitations to buy QuickBooks checks and sign up for online Quickbooks backup and try out advanced Quickbooks payroll and purchase the Quickbooks coffee mug, T-shirt and board game have been only intermittent. But with every subsequent version the program looks more and more like the fast-food boulevard in Suburbia USA, with billboards and advertisements popping up all over the landscape like lightning bugs in the Indiana June moonlight.
Just one more thing that was easier before Bush, I guess.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Won't reinstall after new hard drive installation
by jojobead on March 23, 2010
Pros: Worked fine on XP SP3 til I swapped hard drives
Cons: "Help" online is useless. All the "fixes" did nothing.
Summary: I'll end up paying someone to fix my system, or to buy the latest version and HOPE that IT installs. Very unhappy, with billable hours to invoice!

Vista 64 + Quickbooks = NO GO
by broomnl on September 2, 2008
Pros: None found.
Cons: It doesn't start and support blames Microsoft, whereas Microsoft clearly states this is not an error.

My QB Pro 2007 and 2008 do not work on Vista 64. It simply crashes on startup without error. One can find a lot of references to this on this website.
I spent two hours with a friendly support representative on the phone to try and figure this out.
At one point she asked me to do
sfc /scannow
Which yields an error related to settings.ini. In Microsofts knowledge base this error is listed as 'safe-to-ignore' and this error is currently not fixable.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947595
But the support technician would not relent saying this is a Microsoft problem.
Clearly Intuit is not intent on getting QB to run on Vista64 if there is even the slightest changes of blaming someone else,.. rightfully or wrongfully. -

Summary: I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THIS VERSION AND I HAVE OWNED 4 QB VERSIONS SO I'M NO SPRING CHICKEN TO QB. DON'T BOTHER EMAILING FOR SUPPORT BECAUSE WHEN THEY CALL YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THEM AND THEY WANT TO CHARGE YOU FOR THE CALL EVEN WHEN THE SOFTWARE PROMPS YOU TO CALL FOR SUPPORT BECAUSE IT'S CORRUPTED. THE FIRST WEEK I OWNED THE 2008 VERSION, QB SENT A CORUPTED UPDATE THAT HAD TO BE UNINSTALLED. I THINK I'LL TAKE THE TIME OUT TO REPORT THIS CRAP TO THE BBB. BEWARE DON'T BUY!!!!!

QBpro 2008 - forced to upgrade from 2007 - bummer

Be careful - there is a serious bug that only shows some of your invoices on the Unbilled Cost Report - can cost you$$ if you do T$M billing.
They told me they 'just found out about it' (around 7-5-08)
Given what I know know I would have kept '07 and done CC processing offline.
The thing is there is nothing new here - it's just the same thing re-packaged - but less reliable...
