The good: Integrates tightly with the first-rate TurboTax; scans check registers for bills you need to pay at regular intervals; includes powerful, flexible portfolio tracker; offers a Mac version.
The bad: Long-range financial planner is clunky; no two-way sync to online portfolio; outdated interface doesn't offer enough assistance for beginners.
The bottom line: Quicken 2001's overwhelming interface and poor planning tools belie its age. Unless you're a serious investor or already happy with a previous version of Quicken, you'll want to consider switching to the easier Money.

Summary: Have used Quicken for 5 years, and have recommended to friends, etc. Now I have problem, and can't pay my bills (literally a week late now). All patches have failed. I call the fee-service help desk, and while charging me for support they tell me that they no longer provide any phone support for Quicken 99. They know that the bug I described has existed since 98 version, and yet will not provide support to fix it. So I am screwed, and the only way I could get help from Quicken is to upgrade to their next product. FAT CHANCE!

Summary: For any financial software to fall behind the times is unforgiveable. For those of you who are Canadian users of Quicken, you will know that Quicken 2000, 2001 and now 2002 do not include the new and changed market indexes in Canada. When I contacted Intuit about this, it was suggested I call their fee-only product support. My point is that these updates should be free and work arounds should be posted on the Intuit website. I don't have any experience with other similar packages but on this one point, Quicken fails!

Summary: The Tax Planner is full of bugs and can be very misleading. The most obvious one is when you try to use the Tax Planner in early 2002 to determine what your Tax implications for 2001, it basically mixes 2002 and 2001 data sporadically, especially when looking at Capital Gain. In speaking to the Quicken Tech Advisor at $1.95 per min she advised me that is the way it was designed, i.e., as a forward planner, you can't use it for previous years. Go figure .. just when you need it most it is useless.

Summary: I have been a quicken user since the beginning. I think it is a great program BUT the last 2-3 versions have had change just for the sake of change. Features that I use suddenly disappear from one version to the next. Most of the things that have been added have been useless fluff. The only reason I upgrade is to keep my tax planning tools current. I wish that that would be all they changed rather that randomly removing or adding elements.

Summary: Maybe I'm a little spoiled, because I've been using Larry Burkett's MoneyMatters personal budgeting software, which is designed to maintain a personal budget. That's what I hoped I could do on Quicken (MoneyMatters doesn't work on XP or I would never have switched!). Unfortunately I can't easily split my deposits into different categories, which makes personal budgeting virtually impossible. The last time I used it I was reduced to tears of rage at this horrible program.
