Very poor product, extremely frustrating to operate

Cons: Frequent crashes and error messages, problems with the anti-piracy software.

Summary: When capturing video there is considerable stutter, particularly when capturing direct to wmv format, and the audio is almost invariably out of sync. The options for editing and burning are extremely limited and the program frequently crashes or produces error messages when executing these functions. Conversion is an extremely lengthy process and it is extremely frustrating to get 95 % of the way through a project only to have the program pop up an error message and quit, thus requiring the project to be abandoned. When i contacted honestech I was told that I probably had a defective installation disc and I was advised to download the program from their website. I did this but encountered the exact same problems with the downloaded version. This program is simply a rip-off which does not perform as advertised. Potential buyers should also be aware that this product installs Protexis anti-piracy software on the users computer and this may also cause considerable problems. In fact you may not even be able to run the software even if you have a legitimate product key because of the Protexis software. This happened to me and contacting Protexis support was unhelpful and I wasted considerable time simply getting the product to run. Buyers should also be aware that the Protexis process will run in the background all the time, whether you are using the product or not, and in and of itself may use up a lot of resources and slow down your start-up time. This product was a complete waste of money and should be avoided, particularly by the sort of novice users that hoestech seems to be trying to attract.

dissatisfied on all levels

Pros: straightforward, user friendly interface
Cons: (understand, my system had way more overhead in RAM and HDD space than required)
Jerky video at best; VERY limited as to what you can do with the file; consistently had error messages; consistently quirked up my Win7 64-bit display settings, as Windows sa

Summary: I would advise all consumers, and fellow CNET members, to steer clear of this product. All I wanted was something to convert my family home movies on VHS to DVD. I am so very disappointed with the end results. Do not waste you money or hours of time on a product that will fall far short of your minimum expectations.
Look for someting better. There are lots of issues.

Pros: probably good to piece together 4 or 5 clips into one mpg file where little has to be done to it.
Cons: * Will not complete a project if there are over 20 clips on the timeline. It'll get slow and barf.. won't process it
to finish the project.
* need a minimum of 2 seconds of video at front and rear of a clip to be able to cut what you don't want.

Summary: Even if you want basic editing and compliation features, this software should be avoided. Too many limitations, and these are not mentioned in the User Manual. I had a project, 1hr 5-min long, with 55 clips and I tried on 3 or 4 occasions to finish it only to find Application Errors galore as the software barfed. Each time I had to start over.. one clip at a time. I called Support only to find out it's best if you use less than 20 clips on the time line.. maybe even less than 15.
I had to break my project up into 4 projects and each time the processing, which is done in real time. took forever.. and then take the final 4 files and bring them in on the timeline and then process it again.. .which caused the video quality to suffer, more blurr in the VHS imagaes and poorer contrast (darker images than the original).
The 2-seconds of extra video that 's needed to be able to perform a 'cut' is very inconvenient. I wasn't aware of that and found I had to leave the head and tail of some clips on .. bits of video I did not want there. If i had known that I suppose I could have captured it by starting the capture earlier and ending it later... but then if it's a long clip and you
want to cut a portion in the middle of the clip you're likely to get hindered by the 2-second rule again.
Conclusion: If this software is being used to join a few clips together without any need of any creativity, it'll work... you might not like the final quality or the time it takes to process it.... but even if you're doing something basic like I did with more than20 clips and the only need was to cut out some segments of video you don't want in the final project, than I'd look somewhere else.
