Very good product that gives you peace of mind

Summary: I purchased this kit to clone a hard drive I have. It worked like a charm, and I was able to use the kit to create a cloned hard drive within 30 minutes.
The instruction manual was good, but it left out an important point of installing the device driver for the USB hard drive case. Basically, before you start with the instructions in the manual, you should connect the USB hard drive case to the laptop via the provided USB cable. When you boot up the laptop, it will recognize the USB device and load the appropriate device driver. At that point, you can shutdown the laptop and start with the instructions in the manual.
The USB hard drive case they include in the kit is made of cheap plastic. The manufacturer suggestions a secondary use of the kit as an external hard drive for backing up files. Unless you plan on keeping this external hard drive in one location and don't plan on moving it around, I would not use the case as an external hard drive. The case offers minumal protection for a hard drive.
Overall, this kit is very good.7 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

EZ Upgrade experience.

completion. The EZ Gig II imaging software worked without a hitch. EZ Gig II will also work on your desktop computer. Apricorn's upgrade kit helped to make the hard drive upgrade nearly effortless and absolutely
hassle free. All you need to figure out on your own is how to get your old hard drive out of your laptop. You will then have a nice portable USB 2.0 external hard drive powered by host PC. No power adapter is required but one was included in the kit.7 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Works very well

Pros: Cool enclosure and easy to use. Creates external HD with enclosure and old drive.
Cons: Better documentation

Summary: I upgraded my Dell Inspirion 600m from its standard 40 gig hd to a Seagate 100 gig momentus notebook hard drive. Two issues I ran into. 1) make sure you run a check disk and correct any errors prior to cloning and 2) when you switch out the drive there is an adapter that connects to the drive pins, make sure you remove adapter from old drive and put on new drive. I am not a very technical user, so if I can do it so can practically everyone.
Overall, there just needs to be a slightly more detailed instruction which goes into running check disk, defrag HD and adapters that may need to be transfered. Slick product though.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

The Apricorn makes an impossible task extremely simple
by hankfox on June 24, 2006
Pros: Very good manual, works exactly as described, produces results first time
Cons: None that I have found

Summary: I originally saw this product demo'ed in a Brian Cooley How-To segment. I decided to upgrade my IBM ThinkPad R32 and looked out on the net for the best Hard Drive and best transfer process. The Apricorn was pretty much the product everyone suggested so I went with it.
My only regret is that I don't have more hard drives to upgrade!
* * * Caution: Spoiler * * *
If you want to have problems and never get your transfer completed, don't read below this line. The trick is *read the manual first* then follow the manual step by step through the process. The result will be a cloned drive in an amazingly short period of time. I stress the manual because my USB 1.1 did not have enough power to drive the enclosure by itself and the manual references that you might need the second USB cable as a power source. The software quickly told me it couldn't find the clone drive so I added the cable and viola! off it went.
My transfer from a 30GB 4200RPM OEM drive to a Western Digital 80GB 5400GB 8MB cache drive was 1 hour covers to covers and even included me checking everything I could think of because I didn't believe it could be this fast.
BONUS! The CDROM contains a program that is not referenced in the online product information BUT, guess where it's mentioned? Yep, right there in the manual. There is a drive image backup capability that is a neat way to ferret away a couple of disk images from time to time.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

So easy, my mother could do it!!!
by gnassif on August 22, 2006
Pros: Compatible with notebooks as far back as 1999
Cons: None that I can think of

Summary: I replaced my Compaq Progisnia 161's 4GB HD with a 100GB drive in a few hours. I didn't think it would work, especially after speaking to tech support prior to starting the transfer. But he was wrong. It worked. I've upgraded and intstalled hard drive's in normal pc's countless times and thought that the laptop's BIOS would have a fit. I was wrong. The laptop recognized the drive size and everything worked out smoothly. I am glad I purchased this product. Best thing is, I can use it again to upgrade friend's/family's laptop hard drives!!! It's a 10 because I find no fault with it, it's easy, can be reused again, and serves as an external hd enclosure for portability.

It worked well, on the second try
by agent8426 on October 19, 2009
Pros: This product worked well, but it took two trys of about three hours a peice. The product is very easy to use and the directions are simple to follow.
Cons: The primary con is the price. If this product were around 20 bucks I'd give it annother star. The second con is the drive enclosure, it is large and heavy compaired to what else is available
Summary: This was a good start for my first dirve clone--it worked. The free programs made me nervous, and I figured something in a box had to work. I would not ...

Pros: The case is good
Cons: Product doesn't work!!! I used it and it states don't turn off computer. After 8 hours I figured it was hung up so I turned off. I then checked to see if it did its job. It comes up err1err3. format start over with another companies program.
Summary: There case is good but software is Junk. Also there supposed technical support is garbage. Call leave them a message and they never call you back.

Software needs update, hardware failed
by melhxi on July 31, 2009
Pros: If I can get it to work with replacement hardware and software, I can see where it should be an easy interface/wizard to use.
Product support is excellent.Cons: hard drive enclosure failed. Newest version of software seems to be only available from product support as a possible fix to product problems.

Summary: I spent most of a day trying to get the EZ Upgrade package to work on my Acer Aspire 5920g laptop. After 4 calls to the support line, creating a new DVD boot disk from an ISO image the Support team sent me of the newest software version, swapping current and new Harddrives between the laptop and the EZ external drive enclosure several times, and running chkdsk and defrag on my current drive to confirm it did not have any bad sectors, it was finally determined that the external harddrive enclosure I received in the EZ Upgrade package was defective. Support has sent me an RMA number and I'm sending back the enclosure for replacement. I'll update this review if a new enclosure solves the problem.
The product looks sophisticated and well thought-out. Maybe I just got the rare lemon. -
It seems very easy to use.
by Yurgis on February 11, 2009
Pros: Disk cloning is very easy - you put your new hard drive in the Apricorn provided hard drive holder, connect to your laptop, and insert bootable CD. After cloning is done, turn off your laptop, take the battery out and replace the hard drives.
Cons: I am not sure why (I have 64 bit Windows Vista Ultimate), but the cloning process froze up twice! I don't know if my hard drive was going bad, or the 64 bit Vista didn't work with this software.

EZ Upgrade Works Perfectly
by tadclark on January 17, 2009
Pros: This worked flawlessly and simply. Right out of the box. Very basic and simple intructions. I upgraded from a 60gb HD to 250gb in an hour.
Cons: None that I can tell. In the ned the old drive even doubles as a external drive
Summary: It is amazing how much time this saved me. It would have taken forever to reestablish all my preferences and setups.
