There's more to stereos than frequency response

Summary: Bose are like the Toyota of speakers. If you ask the most elite professionals if they are the best, the answer is no. There are much better speakers to be had, just like there are better cars than Corollas, but there are tradeoffs. Size, price, appearance, and personal tastes should all be considered. Just because a Mercedes is largely considered to be better than an inexpensive Toyota does not mean someone should not consider buying a Toyota. It may be the perfect car for them.
Also, just because you can get a less expensive Kia, that is similar in many ways, does not mean you should buy the Kia. Bose speakers are extremely compact, setup is quite simple, and while they do not have a perfectly linear response curve, they are quite loud and distortion free at high volumes. Very few speakers of this size can be used at such high volumes without causing damage, and the others that can cost as much or more. Of course with unlimited money and unlimited speaker sizes you can make something that sounds better or has a more linear response curve.
However, if someone wants a very compact speaker system to mount on the wall away from children, has a relatively modest budget of $1,000, and isn't worried that a clarinet may sound eight to ten decibels quieter than a flute in an orchestra, by all means they may want to consider this Bose system. Don't believe all the haters. Bose speakers sound very very good for their size and price. In response to the statement, "They're not the best." I say, of course they are not the best! In a world with million dollar home theaters, who would think that $1,000 is going to get them the best system in the world?! If you bought this system only to later rant that it is not the best, you are clueless.
Compare apples to apples. Don't compare large $10,000 systems to tiny $1,000 cube systems. They do not serve the same market segment. For people who just want to have a nice out of the way system, this is for you. For those who want to sit in a sound booth and spend hours comparing response curves and tonality, obviously you should get something else. These are the Toyota Corolla of the speaker world. Not the cheapest, not the best, but very nice for the money and they will work just fine.

the more i think about it, the more i feel like i was taken advantage of

Pros: powerful solid bass, small speakers can be placed anywhere.
Cons: speakers sound like they're being smothered

Summary: i don't know where all these people get that "these speakers are the best" stuff from. just bought the acoustimass system a couple of days ago because i was impressed with how good they sounded at the display station at best buy that i decided to get them. when i got home, i couldn't wait to hook them up to my yamaha receiver and i have to admit that, when i finally got done running the wires and everything and started listening to the speakers i was actually impressed at how good they sounded, but after a while i couldn't help myself but to start playing with the EQ for the center channel speaker because somehow it sounded like not only the center channel but all of the speakers were placed inside an empty bucket or something like that. after i had been playing with the EQ for a while it seemed like i got the speakers to sound "just right". at least that's what i thought until i decided that before throwing my old cerwin vegas out the window i would compare them to my "state of the art" bose acoustimass system just to see how much better the new speakers where, and to my surprise and disbelief MY OLD SPEAKERS SOUNDED A LOT BETTER. so there i was playing with the EQ again trying to get the bose speakers to sound at least just as good as my old ones. switching back and forth between speakers sets, playing with the EQ and all the different settings on my receiver but it always seemed like the old ones sounded better.
usually when i'm about to buy a new product i look for reviews on it or shop around for a while before i decide to buy it, but with this system i didn't even think too much about it before putting it on my card. the more i think about it the more i feel like i was taken advantage of, because everyone tells you how good and wonderful these are, the innovations and the breakthrus achieved to get you this "great sound from such small speakers".
the system as a whole can actually fill your room with sound, specially with the double cube design that allows you to turn one cube one way and the other in a different direction so that sound will reflect off of walls and such, but the sound that you are surrounded by is of poor quality
the satellites, for their size sound ok but just ok, nowhere near great but the subwoofer sounds pretty good, with it's deep bass which to me sounds pretty solid and clear, the satellites which are small can actually sound pretty loud too. the problem is that there seems to be a huge gap in sound between the ear drum piercing mids on the satellites and the deep bass coming from the sub, also the highs coming from the satellites aren't that high at all. but it's more than obvious when you don't know whether the satellites are mid rangers or tweeter wannabes
maybe that's where the big achievement comes in, how do you make such a small speaker sound so big? well make up for the deficiencies in sound quality by adding a huge subwoofer.
the bottom line: these speakers are of decent quality but they're definitely not worth a grand. if you really want to get them compare them first to other similar systems from different manufacturers and if you still want to get them afterwards i'd suggest buying them and trying them out at home, see if thay sound as good as they did at the store, if not return them. you could also buy them on ebay and save a few hundreds of dollars. but compare, compare, compare.12 out of 13 users found this user opinion helpful.

An answer to the critics
by gazzaz82 on April 10, 2009
Pros: Unmatched Clarity
Powerful Bass (if set in the right place and position)
Powerful Sound
Sleek Design
Flexible Position (Small Size)Cons: Apparently Some Frequency Limitation

Summary: I spent about a week shopping around for speakers and had a friend of mine who is specialized in speakers and deals a lot with Proficient, a top end speaker system manufacturer that is actually about 3 times the price of Bose. We roamed around from store to store listening from system to system.
When we sat down in the Bose showroom we were sold and I whipped out my wallet right away. What many people in the reviews criticize are two things, frequency and Bass. This review aims to address these two points.
BASS QUALITY/WOOFER
In regard to the bass I was very disappointed when I first set up my system. After some tweaking from the amp (onkyo tx-sr606) it got better but was not what I wished it had been. I went through the users manual about a week later and found something interesting. The Woofer opening is supposed to be facing the wall somewhere about 2 feet away or so from it. I made that change and I could literally feel my floor shaking. The beauty of this is that the woofer seems to be everywhere, makes you feel like its right under you, even at low volumes. (The room I have set up my speakers in is 6.5x5 meters)
FREQUENCY RANGE
Secondly with regard to the frequency. Yes there may be some frequency limitations, I personally did not notice them but only read about them. I am not an engineer but all I can say is that music and movies sound unbelievable. It is important to note that Bose is about sound quality, clarity and the size of the speakers, where it delivers with flying colors and exceeds most of the competition.
Yes you can get something cheaper with more appealing numbers (power, frequency range etc), but believe me I know what I am talking about, the Bose will sound better hands down. These are truly top of the line speakers and definitely worth more than what they cost.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Bose speakers are not your standard plug and play speakers. The placement of each speaker, the settings on your amplifier, the type of amplifier you use, the power being sent to the speakers, the input you are using, and the quality of the audio you are listening to all play an important role in what you get out of your speakers.
If you are not just looking for good sound without a headache and are not very technically oriented, brands such as Sony sell good plug and play speakers that will provide you with great sound and and tv viewing / music listening experience.
If you want to take it up to an entirely different level however, and have the patience to find the ideal setup, Bose is definitely on top of the list. A little patience can take you a long way, even with setting up speakers.9 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.

I heard the critics, now hear me.

Summary: If you looking for head banger music speakers, then look to getting some huge JBLs or facsimile and pay the $3000 or so for that pleasure. I have JBLs downstairs and they will rock your world. But if you want rich full sound, that's easy on your ears, with a great base and crisp highs, for the money, you can't beat this system. You do need a high end amp to push the system such as a Denon with at least 100-150 watts per channel capability. This will also help push the sub, which will rattle my house when turned up. Then sit back and enjoy. Cause for the money, they are well worth it. I will preface my comments in saying that if you have appreciated the quality of a Bose speaker before, then you will know what I'm talking about. I have Bose in my vehicle and as computer speakers and I couldn't be happier. Again...you're not going to hurt your ears on them, but on lower volume the full rich sound will captivate you. Thank you Bose!

Easy to set up, and although a step-up from my old Sony system, it doesn't sound as good as it did when I first heard in the showroom. Tried to change the setup of the speakers, didn't make a huge difference.

More style than substance

Summary: I bought these Bose speakers because I remembered the clear, crisp sound that filled the room from Bose 501 & 901 speakers (many years ago). I bought a Denon 988 receiver and these speakers expecting excellent highs, decent lows and, 'basic' mid range. The lows and midrange were, well, adequate, but I am disappointed that even the highs are either missing or not clear/crisp.
On the positive side, these speakers are easy to setup in a tight room (especially using the available stands), are fairly stylish and appear to be well built. If you don't mind paying a little extra for Bose name and quality, and if, like most houses, you don't really have room for better quality floor standing speakers, then these can be a good option.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

I originally bought the AM-5's when they were first offered.
I now have an older version of the AM-10's...would I trade them for another companies system?
NO WAY.....Bose has never done me wrong in any application I put them through.
My home theater system does make me feel as if I am in a movie theater..and I attribute that to Bose.
My audio amp does produce more wattage than the speakers recommend, yet the speakers have yet to fail in any way.
My only suggestion to the nay sayers is to do as Bose asks..experiment with speaker placement,it makes all the difference in the world.
You will not be disappointed.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Excellent sound for music and movies. don't be persuaded by all the bose bashing on the web. these are excellent speakers for the price. there is very little in this price range that matches the sound for a complete set of surround speakers. your choice of reciever will make a huge difference, though. i suggest any hk 5.1 receiver. the surround mode chosen is also important. if you chose basic stereo, it will not sound as good as cinema or 5 channel stereo. so play around with these for the best match for your room accoustics and preference.
