The good: Sleek single-speaker surround system; five speakers in one; extruded-aluminum cabinet; flexible setup options; nonreflective virtual-surround effect works regardless of room design and layout; wall-mount bracket and table stand included.
The bad: Somewhat expensive; hardly an ideal choice for music lovers; you still need to invest in a subwoofer.
The bottom line: A single-speaker surround system, the Polk Audio SurroundBar works best as a home-theater solution for small rooms.

Superb product for the right user.

Pros: Good audio performance, excellent build quality, easy placement.
Cons: Needs subwoofer for best performance (and Polk tells you this), not true 5.1.

Summary: Let's be clear on this. This is NOT a competitor for a high-quality individual speaker system. It lacks the sound stage, precise placement and audio response of a properly set up, high quality multi-speaker system. However, when properly tweaked, it provides excellent sound if combined with a subwoofer. You will need to play with it a little for best effect, and there is a significant difference between a properly set up SurroundBar and one that is not. The sound is not as "deep" and rich as high-end separate speakers but far better than lower quality units. There is more of a sense of speakers in this setup (they don't disappear when you close your eyes - you know the bar is there). The wrap around is not as convincing as with multiple speakers, and the music performance suffers somewhat. I have a tough living room to work with including very high ceilings, open sides leading to other rooms, and a concrete foundation. Traditional multi-speaker setups would have required either major work fishing walls through braces, etc, or running wires on the floor. Since I have other high-end audio in another room, I wasn't interested in terrific music reproduction, just good theater performance. I find the Polk excellent and worth the money IF you have similar limitations. If not, you are better off with separates. For info, I use a Sony 3100ES receiver and there is more than enough tweaking ability in it's controls to get great sound from the Polk. I also use a Polk subwoofer which you WILL need for good bass.

Summary: This was very easy to hook up and does require a sub. At the end of the day of coarse a wired system would sound best, but if you have a room that would be difficult to wire this is a great option. I am a light movie watcher but love good sound and this works for me. If I want sound like the big screen I'll go to the movies, it cost less than trying to get that sound. I bought this for $599 and already owned the sub.
