The good: Self-powered single-speaker virtual surround system; 2 4-inch woofers paired with 21 1.5-inch microdrivers; built-in Dolby/DTS surround processing and digital power amplifiers eliminate the need for an A/V receiver; autosetup capability.
The bad: Works best in barely furnished, symmetrically arranged rooms; needs to be paired with a subwoofer for optimal sound quality.
The bottom line: Yamaha's second-generation single-speaker YSP-800 Digital Sound Projector is more affordable and easier to set up, and it sounds better than last year's model.
Think of it as a home theater in a box--without the box. The Yamaha YSP-800 Digital Sound Projector is a self-powered, single-speaker virtual surround system; just add a TV and a DVD player and you're all set. In early 2005, Yamaha's first Digital Sound Projector, the YSP-1, garnered a lot of attention and a lot of rave reviews. We weren't as gung ho, so we're happy to note that Yamaha has addressed many of the reservations expressed in our YSP-1 review: the new and improved YSP-800 ($900 list, less online) is easier to set up, it sounds better, and it retails for $600 less than the YSP-1's original $1,500 asking price.

I love the look, the sound and not having any wires to run!
by scottseaman on January 16, 2006
Pros: Sleek, integrated look below wall mounted plasma, remarkable sound, no wires to run.
Cons: Remote has to be pointed at the unit pretty directly, I don't yet have any other cons.
Summary: On the wall, it looks great under a 42" plasma. I bought the silver screen model with the 10" subwoofer and it 'rocks'. Set up was done by a professional ...
Summary: On the wall, it looks great under a 42" plasma. I bought the silver screen model with the 10" subwoofer and it 'rocks'. Set up was done by a professional and I know he appreciated not having to run wires. Calibration took 60 seconds with the wired microphone at the preferred seating location. The clarity of voices is great. I love it!

This system is great for those who like simplicity without the caos of a home theater system.

Summary: Something you might want to consider while looking for a home theater system is the amount of inputs and what types of inputs they offer. As for those of you that have the whole dvd/cd/md/turntable/tape/etc, this is something you might want to steer away from. This is because; well as for the YSP-800 it has only a few inputs to offer. I don?t really deem this to be a con, but it is something to be considered. If you are looking for a little something more you might also want to take a look at the YSP-1000.
The YSP-800 itself is a great unit. It takes away from the whole setting up a home theater system; having to drill holes through the wall, feed wire into the ceiling, wire around your hardwood floor, underneath your carpeting, etc. This unit is deprived of wiring (good attribute.) It eliminates having to use any wiring at all and also the confusion of buying wiring. All it needs is a simple audio connection from your DVD player, a wall outlet and your all set. The automatic calibration process is as simple as pushing a few buttons and stepping away for a minute or so.9 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.

I bought a Dell w3706mc 37 inch LCD HDTV, Yamaha ysp-800 digital sound projector, Yamaha yst-fsw100 subwoofer, Xbox360 premium, and a Sanus pffp2b stand to hold all the goods in style.
It took me two evenings to set everything up together. The Yamaha system is so easy to install. To setup, you just have to take the included microphone and place it where you'll be sitting and hit 'auto setup' on the control. That simple. The sound without the subwoofer is great. Add the subwoofer and the sound is even better. There are a few different sound modes. like 5 or 6. I have only been playing with it for a day so thus far I have no cons about the system except that the subwoofer is sold seperately.
I highly recommend this sound system to anyone who wants it simple, clean, and efficient.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

30-inch wide sonic wonder.
by fox-orian on August 23, 2007
Pros: Convenient. Low power consumption. An all-in-one unit with top-notch audio quality. Clean, crisp, full sound with a wide virtualization field. Highly customizable. Includes all cables, even optical.
Cons: Make sure you have the furniture to accomodate it properly adove or below the TV. Wall-mount is expensive and not included. SR and SL beams will be hard to hear if your couch if against a wall.

Summary: I bought the YSP-800 while looking for alternatives to the somewhat lack-luster HTIB's available on the market today. I also was looking for a system without an integrated DVD player since I already have an Xbox 360 and PS3 which play DVD's more than adequately. I became interested in the YSP-800 as a venture into something completely new. I've had several speaker systems before, each with a mess of wires and a power-hungry amplifier. The YSP-800 caught my attention because of what it claimed to be capable of and its seeming convenience -- the thought of using only 82W for power and next to no wires whatsoever was more than tantalizing to my brain. I researched online and ended up buying it from 6th Ave electronics for around $550, a far cheaper price than the $800 MSRP tag superstores puts on it.
Let me say that once I got the unit out of the box, I was VERY impressed. It felt solid all the way through. It's weight is heavy, but not terribly so. Just right. I was impressed to find that the entire casing is made of metal save for the plastic bezel on the top. The metal grating on the front is also a good move, this ensures a long, protected life for each of the 23 drivers behind it. Since I have a cat, I won't have to worry about damaged drivers with this thing.
I was also impressed with the contents of the package. Remote came with batteries, it came with every cable you need -- [1x Optical cable, 1x coaxial, 1x pair of RCA red/white, 1x yellow composite video cable for on-screen setup, 1x calibration mic] -- and came with a cardboard stand to mount the microphone on to bring it up to listening height for the YSP to calibrate properly. It also came with velcro to ensure that the YSP won't slide out of place on your shelf -- or fall and accidentally kill something.
My particular setup is just a TV stand, nothing fancy or mounted. My TV is the 32" Samsung LNT3253H. I don't wall-mount the TV, so I had to find a solution to place the YSP at a proper listening height without blocking the TV at all. If you had a larger HDTV, you could actually place the YSP in front of the TV and the picture will perfectly clear the top of it -- but my 32" is a bit too short so I had to find another way. My solution was a 6" tall, 25" wide, 8" deep piece of wood which I painted black. I placed the block behind the YSP and placed my TV on top of the block. Not only does the setup look awesome with the screen rising from the top of the unit, but it ensures I get proper feedback from the drivers.
The auto-setup was painless and simple enough. In about one minute the YSP determines your rooms parameters, unique room EQ settings, and sound-beam angles. You just have to be outside of the room as it does this.
Once I had set it all up, a remarkably easy thing to do, I started up my PS3 [since it outputs DTS surround] connected through the supplied optical cable. My test movie: The Incredibles. [I'm a fan of the movie, what can I say?] As everyone's ears in this world are different, I can't guarantee everyone will love its sound quality. I can tell you that I love it, and it's one of the best sounding speakers systems I've owned period. If you live in an apartment, you actually don't need a subwoofer as some people say. You can greatly enjoy this unit just as it is. I was extremely impressed with its bass output. I was expecting bass output similar to something like 2.0 computer speakers, but I was greatly underestimating the power of this unit. Under its own two main woofers, the movie managed to actually shake my seat through the floor. If you definitely want more out of the unit, adding a subwoofer does help by keeping the low-frequency signals away from the YSP so it can focus more on the midrange and highs. [You'll get a more full theater-like range of frequencies with a subwoofer.] I don't own the official Yamaha subwoofer they recommend to use with the YSP, I have a powered THX Altec Lansing subwoofer which connected up just fine, and works beautifully with it. So if you have an extra subwoofer somewhere, you can probably get away with using it with the proper cable.
Now for the spatial effects. Yes, the surround really works. It works if you're seated more in the middle of the room to allow the surround beams to deflect off the back wall. My couch is placed along the back wall, which means that the surround beams don't have the room to bounce off and be heard. The YSP compensated for this by placing the surround beams in the rooms corners, greatly widening the surround effect. While it doesn't guarantee I'll believe I'm hearing something from behind, I definitely never seem to actually care or notice that the rear speakers are really missing. The front speakers have such a wide virtualization field that I become entranced and enveloped within them. TV shows, games, and movies sound best comparable to a panoramic image -- wide and deep. Things that happen to the right really sound like they happen to the far right -- even though all of this sound is coming from a bar in front of me only 30" wide. It's quite impressive and many of my friends who have watched movies at my place agree that size of the sound produced by the YSP is not to be underestimated.
My rooms particular setup, with the couch along the back wall, suggests that I should be using ST+3BEAM mode. This mode sounds best for when I listen to music, but I prefer 5BEAM mode for movies and games.
[Also, at using only 82W of power, you get major bang for the sheer low power this system uses. The YSP uses very high efficiency drivers which allow every little bit of performance to be sucked from its low power supply. Remember: high wattage means nothing in a sound system. A 1000W system with power-guzzling drivers can sound just as good or bad as a 100W system with better drivers that not how to use that 100W.]
Overall, give this thing a try. If you are truly unsure about whether this is for you or not, you can always buy it from a local store and return it if you don't like it -- or if you intend to return it to buy it cheaper online after ample trial period.
If your room can accommodate these YSP's, don't be afraid to jump in and give it a try. New technologies are fun -- you only live once to give them a try.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I have the sound going into this from a DVD player OPPO DV-981HD via the optical IN. I am using a very high quality Optical Audio Cable as the one it came with was laughable. The sound is totally incredible. My movies and music collection are now all worth re-playing again. I knew Yamaha always made superior audio equipment for a very long time so I went by the name and the CNET reviews and I am glad I got it. I am very pleased and so happy to get rid of the cables running across the room.

Summary: If you're considering a virtual surround sound product, stop looking because this is one! I listened, researched, and listened some more before I decided on this winner. I liked the Polk SoundBar, but the sound quality just wasn't there, even with a Denon 7.1 pushing it. The Bose 3.2.1 couldn't compare. I will tell that my living room is about 22'x15'. A little abnormal in size, but the Yamaha fills it up with 7.1 quality!
The input location does leave a little to be desired, but not cause for worry. The optical inputs are quite close to each other and could cause a problem if you choose the truly heavy-duty cables.
Setup was ridiculously easy and quick. The menu is thorough and asks all the important questions to make sure the sound is right. From open box to ballgame was about 15 minutes. That included 2 setups, becuase I forgot to turn on my sub the first time.
The powered sub is a must. Just not enough bass for me without it. I chose the SUB-10 from Klipsch...for obivous reasons. I'm sure that a much less expensive sub would be great for most.
The long and short...The easiest $1100 (YSP and SUB-10) surround system you will EVER install and quite possibly the best sounding!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Not bad for a one speaker set-up

Summary: I have owned this now for a few months and over all am pleased with the sound. You do need a sub-woofer for better performance and sound. I am used to a 5.1 system and will eventually put that under my 50" plasma and use this Yamaha under my second LCD tv. I have just used the auto set-up which is a breeze to set up. When I have friends over they enjoy the sound but I am used to a 5.1 system. I have this set up in my living room. If you set this up in a room with less furniture it would probably work better bouncing off the walls I also have a couple of curtains that stop the sound. I will put this down in the basement eventually and I am sure it will deliver better.

Summary: Well I have owned mine for a month now, and it keeps getting better by the day. This is because, manual setup is the best way to go and didn't know enough to use anything but auto setup at first.
The Sound is Crisp and clean, and I have it hooked into a Powered subwoofer, so movies do rumble now. It has so many features it took me a few weeks to really understand them all. The remote is great as well on a side note.
Well worth then extra $$$ and beats the pants off a bose 3-2-1 IMHO, with woofer. the sound is amazing!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excellent sound, easy setup.

The sound quality is excellent. I can distinctly hear different sound elements in movies. No extraneous distortion, buzzing, or crackling sounds. Very clean sound. When movie scenes transition from loud action to quiet scenes where there is softly spoken dialogue you do not need to adjust volume to be able to hear.
When hooked up to my iPod the sound is not impressive...it sounds clean, but doesn't sound "full" and won't play louder than computer speakers. Not a breaking point for me since I bought it for movies.
The surround sound quality is good but not on par with a full 5 speaker system. Make sure your room dimensions/specs are within range suggested in the manual. Mine fall a bit short, but it still sounds fantastic...even with the unit close to the ground, and with no subwoofer.
I highly recommend the YSP-800 if you don't want to fuss with the clutter of a 5 speaker system, and do not want to purchase a separate amplifier. The YSP-800 has a built-in digital amp. I'm happy with my purchase....thumbs up.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I have a new Sony Wega TV with stand. The YSP-800 would not fit on top nor on the wall behind it, so I had to place it a floor level, usually not a good place. Well, after the easy setup, the sound is great!
Since my remote was defective (waiting for a new one presently), I have been unable to tweak the sound for a better "behind" sound, which is why a wired system would sound better right now. Maybe after tweaking it would be better.
Nevertheless, this is revolutionary technology and it works great.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
