The good: Powerful and sure-footed; backup warning; innovative antirollover system.
The bad: Limited digital devices; stiff suspension.
The bottom line: The 2005 Volvo XC90 is comfortable and easy to drive but doesn't connect to MP3 players or cell phones.
The 2005 Volvo XC90 with a V-8 engine has a base price of $45,395, but after you add in the metallic paint ($475), heated front seats ($625), Touring package ($1,795), Convenience package, and $695 delivery charge, the car tops out at $50,285, or nearly $10,000 more than a decked-out Chrysler Pacifica with GPS, a DVD player, and satellite radio.

Love the car, electronics are a disappointment.
by cczaphod2 on August 24, 2009
Pros: Great handling, snappy acceleration, room for my family of five and a couple of guests. Overall, very nice car.
Cons: I purchased the 100K mile warranty, so the Transmission at 60K miles or so was covered. Other than that, and a recall or two, I've been pleased with the mechanics of the car.
Summary: I like the car, it's a nice SUV. I traded in a Mercedes M-Class SUV on it and have not really missed the Mercedes much. The Volvo interior is ...
Summary: I like the car, it's a nice SUV. I traded in a Mercedes M-Class SUV on it and have not really missed the Mercedes much. The Volvo interior is nice, the Navigation package is another plus. I like the third row of seats and how flat they go when they're not deployed. My only gripe is the electronics package. I can't add Sirius or hook up my iPod -- seems odd in a 2005 model year car.

Great Handling, Good in Snow, Safe but One Huge Problem
by ftoddt77 on September 26, 2008
Pros: Stylish, Great Handling, Powerful, AWD. Great in Snow, Rain and any weather. Total feeling of safety.
Cons: If you like mice in your car, Volvo is the car for you. They come and go at will. Feces on the leather seats, dash, floor, is common. Volvo has no solution? Heck of a price to pay to have mice in there with you.
Summary: Until Volvo solves the Mice Problem is fixed, I would never buy another Volvo period.

Volvo XC90 V8 nearly perfect in all respects
by abvbynd02 on April 4, 2006
Pros: Gas Mileage, Safety, Comfort, Style, Power. For the price this is the SUV for the family or the driving enthusiast.
Cons: No Integrated Bluetooth (now a dealer option), needs a better choice of tires (currently on Michelin or Pirelli)

Summary: We test drove the original XC90 in Alameda California in 2003. On the test track the capabilities for this vehicle were awesome. When I heard that for 2005 they were adding a V8 and a 6-speed transmission, I knew this was the vehicle for me. Although I was planning on orginally getting a fully loaded T6, there was no question the V8 was the way to go. We have not been disappointed. The power when needed it unbelieveable (especially when you compare the price to the BMW X5 or the VW Toureg V10). The syling is pure Volvo and keeps the SUV looking unique in this "me too" looking environment. The handling is the best of any SUV in it's class. It can also tow 5,000 pounds. In a recent review in MotorTrend, it was compared to the new Mercedes SUV (circa -Chrysler Pacifica knockoff) and took 2nd place against a vehicle that was nearly twice ($90,000) the cost (and no towing or off-road capability). The safety is without question, you virtually cannot tip this SUV over. The Navigation System works great as do the Bi-Xenon headlamps. The Stereo system is great, but you must set all of your personal settings for best response. With nearly 10,000 miles on the vehicle, we are getting 22-23 MPG on the highway (in California), and between 16 and 18 in the city. Compared to our friend's that have a 2005 Sequoia V8 (with less horsepower), they have never seen better that 15 MPG on the highway. My only comment to those that do not like Volvo's, you will probably not like this vehicle either, because it is Volvo through and through. To date we are very please with our purchase and highly recommend this SUV to potential buyers. It is true that the early version of the XC90 had many software glitches, but that is true with the first release of most car models, that is why I waited until the 2005 V8 introduction. One final note I have taken this vehicle off-road (light off-roading, not deep mud and stuff like that), through small streams (12-24" deep), and dirt paths (both muddy and very dry and slippery) without any problems. Volvo has a winner in the XC90.

Safest family SUV -- if yours stays working...

A NOTE OF CAUTION -- our XC90 has developed serious safety problems. In our case, the AWD system malfunctions without any warnings to the driver and causes the vehicle to drive very erratically. The problem was confirmed by a dealer six month ago, but neither they nor Volvo can fix it. Turns out my XC90 doesn't report any diagnostic codes for the AWD failures. The dealer and Volvo have replaced lots of items, including the AWD transmission, but my XC90 is still broken.
The Volvo regional manager for my area says all he's willing to do is keep trying to fix it. He doesn't seem to care that I'm driving an unsafe example of what's supposed to be the safest SUV in the world. IF YOU OWN OR BUY AN XC90 MAKE SURE YOU REPORT A SUSPECTED AWD PROBLEM DURING YOUR NEXT SERVICE CALL, or you may be stuck with your XC90 if it develops this problem after it's out of warranty -- just as I am now.
My proposed Volvo tagline -- Safest cars in the world. Unless the one we built you has safety problems we can't fix. Then you are on your own. -
Perfect combo of comfort, luxury and drivability
by yurione on January 28, 2006
Pros: Strong engine performance, excellent seats, very good location of controls, very good sound, 7 seater is a plus
Cons: it is an SUV and has gas mileage of an SUV -however, the V8 gets almost the same mpg as our former Pilot's V6
Summary: As above- it is a perfect combination of luxury, usability and driving experience. Don't forget the best rating in safety -You may never use the safety features, but if ...

Summary: I just recently upgrade my wife to the XC90 V8 from the discontinued T-6 version. What an amazing difference in performance and ride comfort! She'll call me every couple of days telling me how much more she loves the vehicle and how safe she feels driving our daughter around. I love driving it on the weekends! And it get better gas mileage then the 6 cyl. She has bluetooth for her cell phone in the car that's offered as a dealer accessory. A true must for ultimate convience! Great Job Volvo!!

Great SUV for my Mom

Summary: I got this car for my Mom as a daily driver. I wanted to get her a safe car that was easy to handle. She loves the car. There was a few problems the first couple of months. The cd changer jammed up, and the battery completely died; other than that it has been a good car. I don't really like driving the car however. I am 5'10" and it's a little ackward to see out some of the windows. The pillars around the windshield are a little hard to see around when you are slightly tall. The headrests are hard to see around as well. My Mom, who is 5'5", can see fine for some reason how ever. Wierd.
