The good: The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee features an excellent touch-screen interface for its cabin electronics, with navigation software from Garmin and an app store. Its air suspension gives it a comfortable ride, while four-wheel-drive systems give it strong off-road capability.
The bad: Touch-screen and voice command reaction time can be a little sluggish, and manual gear shifts from the eight-speed automatic are laggy.
The bottom line: The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee bristles with tech that makes it not only a very comfortable and luxurious SUV, but a very capable off-road vehicle, as well.
Great car for a price

Pros: Ride, comfortable, reliable. Space, easy to drive, engine, power.
Cons: Speakers, blind spots, price, voice commands and texting through unconnect.

Excellent vehicle tarnished by slow electronics

Pros: Engines. 8 speed transmission. Fuel economy, especially on the diesel. Comfortable heated and cooled leather seats, heated rear seats (just in case you like your kids). HID lights. Good handling. Huge sunroof. Long range, crossed Oregon on one tank.
Cons: The head unit is horribly slow, the navigation is especially poor. Climate control tends to stagnate leaving cabin stuffy. The shift is clever, the rotary shift in Durangos is much better. Cup holders aren't heated/cooled like in the Chrysler 300.

Summary: We rented a 2013 in Kansas to go to a wedding, before that I wouldn't have considered a Jeep, but that's what they had. We rented a 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited to try before deciding whether to buy. I drove it to work for three weeks then we took a road trip from Silicon Valley to Olympia Washington for Thanksgiving and came back down the Oregon coast. It was almost everything we could have wanted. We cruised north on I5, this gave us a good chance to check the noise levels at high speed. We noticed that the only way to get the GPS to show a decent amount of the route (more than a few hundred yards) was to use the manual zoom mode. Not good.
The GC rides comfortably but also tracks and steers well. It does not wallow over undulating road surfaces where most comfortable vehicles feel out of control. It doesn't thump and bang over small imperfections on the road either.
The high point was the relatively rare visits to gas stations. On the way north we refilled in Yreka CA and then in Olympia WA, 437 miles, but we also drove around Portland, so it was nearer 500 miles and we were nowhere near empty. Over four days we did 1500 miles and averaged 24.5mpg. For a relatively economical mid sized SUV the acceleration was good, better than most without breaking the bank. The 8 speed gearbox may have been sluggish a year ago but Jeep have been working on the electronics and whereas they have tossed out the good Garmin navigation they have improved the gearbox programming. Most American vehicles only allow you to suggest what the automatic transmission should do, the Jeep 8 speed box is probably second only to the Infiniti rev matching gearbox. In sports mode it did a better job of keeping the engine spinning in the power band than the sports mode in the Infiniti FX37, which is a sports sedan with ground clearance. The engine revs freely and will run all the way to the red line if you keep your foot down, you can lose your license in relatively few seconds.
It was frosty in Portland and the heated seats and steering wheel were welcome, our daughter especially appreciated that the rear seat passengers had not been forgotten and that she could recharge her phone and her iPod at the same time without even needing adapters. There was also a 115 volt socket back there that we used for charging camera batteries for which we did not have a car charger.
The phone interface is good enough. On entering the vehicle the electronics take some time to start. So if you are in the middle of a phone call the radio comes on before the Bluetooth system realizes there is a phone and a call in progress, but it does eventually take over the call. Sometimes it takes long enough to start the USB interface that the vehicle forgets you were listening to a book.
The voice commands don't work for me, I have a deep voice and an English accent and trying to use the voice interface is just a frustrating waste of time. Not as good as my four year old Garmin.
In the end the only unacceptable thing to me was the navigation, I wouldn't pay nearly a grand for something that behaves like a hundred dollar Chinese knock off.
But we liked it so much that we are buying the diesel, all the advantages of the one we tried but with better fuel economy and enormous torque.
jeep Grand Cherokee is an awesome vehicle.
