Summary: I will not recommend this switch to any other of my customers. I had initially installed two of these switches at a new building and had absolutely no problems with it. I upgraded the firmware and it has run like a charm. Based on this first experience, I recommended this switch to another location and they have nothing but crashes. They are on the second switch and they are still having crashes every 3 days. I have checked all the usual suspects and still have had no luck. It has caused some unnecessary friction between my client and I. I wouldn't do it again. The tech support folks were as good as could be expected and they shipped out another switch next day, but still the same problem. I guess I will try a D-link or Dell for the next switch.
Updated
Since this review was posted, Netgear has come out with another firmware update...I think it is 5.0.1.8. The location had decided against RMAing the switches, despite my recommendations to do so, and I have since upgraded the firmware to the newest version. Since the firmware flash to 5.0.1.8, they have not had any of the problems I had originally complained about. They have been running stable since the firmware was released. I would like to change my opinion based on the new firmware. At present, I would rate them a 7. I took points off for the beta testing we did with the previous firmware releases. -
Greatest Value in Gigabit Switches
by shalbert on August 29, 2005
Pros: 1) Best value in a 48 port L2 managed switch bar none; 2) Extremely Intuitive Setup; 3) Solid Performance in Gigabit throughput
Cons: 1) Netgear relatively unknown player in the business market; 2)Marginally less powerful switching engine than the well-known products like Cisco & HP

Summary: If you are in the market for an L2 managed switch, you can't ignore netgear's gsm7248 switch. All the networks I have managed I have used either HP Procurves or Cisco catalyst. However, while these switches are in my opinion the industries' best...these are not for the technically challenged or the budget conscious. I swapped out my aging 10/100 HP 4000M switches for these 7248 switches and can't believe how these perform for the price. I've been running these a week over my existing cat5 cabling...i tested to see if there was a noticeable difference in database speed using CAT6 cabling the result...don't bother upgrading a cat5 infrastructure unless it's a brand new install...not worth the money/trouble! Vlans, trunking, etc. are a snap to create if you need these features. This is a very solid product by netgear...I am truly impressed with the 7248...definitely worth consideration!!!
Specifications
- Manufacturer: NetGear
- Part number: GSM7248
- Description: NETGEAR delivers wirespeed Gigabit performance and a full set of Layer 2 management features with unsurpassed affordability. This next-generation, high-speed switch delivers maximum throughput where you need it - to high-performance workgroups at the edge of the network, or as a backbone for Fast Ethernet switches and high-speed servers in demanding small networks. The non-blocking design offers full Gigabit throughput simultaneously to all 48 10/100/1000 ports to ensure reliable performance. Flexible fiber connectivity is enabled through four combination Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) gigabit interfaces. Layer 2 management functionality delivers reliability, control, and availability. The very affordable NETGEAR ProSafe 48 Port Gigabit L2 Managed Switch GSM7248 creates a more productive - and future-proof - network. With increasing bandwidth requirements from applications such as voice, video, database management, and other services that slow throughput and response time, you can unleash your network and enable maximum productivity with Gigabit Ethernet for today's high-performance environments. Optimize bandwidth, security, and control with full Layer 2 management capabilities. Network administrators can use any combination of these features to ensure uptime, availability, bandwidth and throughput. A full 48 10/100/1000 ports and a non-blocking design provide wire speed throughput and maximum bandwidth for the most demanding network environments. Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) modules deliver choice in 1000Base-SX, 1000Base-LX or 1000Base-ZX (70Km) optics. The Layer 2 management features optimize bandwidth throughout the network - delivering Gigabit performance to systems, applications, and services. Take advantage of forwarding rates up to 71.4 million pps, and a switching capacity of 96 Gbps. Move up to Gigabit power in minutes. Use the GSM7248 as a managed switch out of the box - just plug and play! All ports are auto-negotiating and support Auto Uplink technology. Choose from two easy to use management interface options - Web interface or a command line interface available through console or Telnet. Comprehensive remote administration capabilities reduce the need for on-site administration. Easy to troubleshoot - built-in testing capability locates cable related network problems. Meet your management needs with SNMP (v1, v2c and v3), RMON, Command-Line Interface (CLI) and complete Web-based GUI. Advanced features include up to 512 VLANs, DiffServ traffic prioritization and 802.1p (QoS) for Voice over IP services (VoIP), broadcast storm protection, RADIUS, 802.1x, port trunking, rapid spanning tree, and link aggregation. Full Layer 2 implementation allows you to configure your network for maximum performance, reliability, and availability. Manageable with any popular SNMP-based management software, but optimized for NETGEAR ProSafe Network Management Software NMS100.
