Good overall laptop, poor tablet
by gkantz on October 27, 2007
Pros: Lots of features and functionality for the money

Summary: This laptop has a ton of great features - AMD Turion X2 processor, huge 250GB HD, 2GB RAM, webcam, touchscreen with stylus, very compact. However, be forewarned. It is not being touted as a "tablet PC" and rightfully so. It may have tablet functionality, but without a WACOM-enabled screen the tablet performance is very poor. If you fiddle around with sensitivity controls you may see some improvement, but it pales in comparison to the likes of the tc4400. I suppose that's what you get at this price point, but I was hoping for at least a bit of decent tablet functionality. This just doesn't cut it. Also, the battery life is very poor - mine only lasted about an hour. To improve on battery you must lower screen brightness, shut off WIFI and perhaps remove the DVD Drive. Not a good thing.
However if both of these problems weren't present, I'd be tempted to give this thing a 10 out of 10 with everything else you get out of the box.6 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excellent product, excellent price
by kballeng on October 13, 2007
Pros: Affordable, many extra features, portable, stylish, powerful, fast
Cons: Screen could be a little clearer

I really ...Summary: I just got this laptop for $999 and I couldn't be happier. It's features are excellent if you're an artist or enjoy doing graphic design.
I really enjoy using the table because it isn't overly sensitive. You can flip the screen for easier use and actually rest your hand on the screen as you draw. I've read some complain the tablet is too insensitive. Granted it's not a Waicom tablet but I prefer it this way. It takes pretty much standard pressure that you would apply with a pen or pencil on paper which prevents it from registering other things touching the screen accidently.
I also love, love, love the fingerprint scanner. It works so well! I expected it to be glitchy but it's very convenient.
I also noticed a lot of people on forums and things say that the Intel Core 2 Duo processes are better than AMD X-2. I used to be a believer of this. I had before this a dv2000t laptop which I paid 1400 for. It had a 80gb harddrive, 1.83 gHz Core 2 Duo, and 2gb of ram. With this, granted the processor is a 2 gHz I find it so much easier to multi-task and it seems faster.
The webcam and microphone are also very good. The cam is definately better than my old one.
My only qualm is that even though the screen is brighter than my old hp, with a lot more brightness levels, the screen is..odd. I don't know to explain it, really. I believe it's that on certain colors like a black screen you can see some of the touch screen mechanisms behind the screen (diagonal stripes) but most of the time they're unnoticeable.
I also note that colors are much more vivid on this computer than my dv2000t. I'm not sure if this graphics card is better than the Nvidia 7200 I had, I actually think it isn't but maybe it's the fact the screen is brighter? I don't know but colors are amazing on this screen.
On my old laptop I also UPGRADED to Vista. Worst mistake ever. The drivers are crap and things never quite worked right. I was afraid when I had read some things about people purchasing NEW laptops with vista orginally installed on them had strange things happening but so far, everything has been working smoothly.
Anyway, enough rambling. You really can't beat the price of functionality of this machine. I love it!6 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Solid, Fun Ultraportable

Summary: I purchased this little lappy a little less than a week ago after considering many far more pricey systems. I was leary about the AMD processor because I have always owned intel based PCs. So far, it has handled my light tasks with aplomb. It has never felt slow or bogged down. I typically have Media Center open in the background, an office app, and a couple of web pages. The express card remote is a nice extra. I have found the touchscreen adequate for navigation but not precise enough for note taking on a regular basis.
On the downside, it does run hot and battery life is about two hours with wifi on. I would not purchase this if you do any significant 3D gaming as it has a low-average graphics card. However, most ultraportables are not gaming machines.
Overall, this is an excellent computer for professionals and students. It offers many features at a reasonable price while sacrificing extreme performance that most users do not require.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

I will never buy HP again, great system the worst service for business users
by christianzuili on October 11, 2007

Summary: I loved tablet when it learned my hand writing. I loved it when I started using it (I´m a journalist). It is really powerful. Unfortunately hp sells for locals, not for traveling business people. I went to service center because I spilled lemon on my keyboard. They told me it would require 15 days just to review it and another 20 to repair it, if I accepted the quotation. I asked for a fast repair service, no matter what cost and they said there was none. I couldn´t leave it in Mexico cause I was traveling to Spain so I refused that service. My surprise was that when I arrived here to Spain they refused even to repair it cause it was not built to European standards and spare parts won`t fit???!!! So now I´m stuck with $1800 usd+ of useless hardware. Today I bought a DELL XPS 1330 with a beautiful and not so expensive international next day repair service including accidents. Something a lot more cheaper than having to buy a new machine. By the way I am writing this in an external keyboard in case you wonder..in my beautiful but useless as laptop tx from HP Mexico.
Updated
What I said is true, but I made a mistake in the model selection. I was talking about the tx1000 tablet PC. Not this model. Sorry!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Never buy HP laptop! Had to sent twice for same problem
by rickyst on September 4, 2008
Pros: Size and Memory
Cons: Drivers - Webcam fails a lot, had to reinstall driver few times.
Vista - It shuts down due to windows issues.
Tablet - Poor quality
Guarantee and Customer Service - Worst ever, HP do not respect guarantee terms!Summary: Bought the laptop last December, and webcam didn't work since start. Called HP support and we had to disable, update, reinstall, etc...and finally it worked for a while ...
Summary: Bought the laptop last December, and webcam didn't work since start. Called HP support and we had to disable, update, reinstall, etc...and finally it worked for a while but later on same problem. Did same process again and works ok.
On March, wifi connection began to fail. It connected to the network fine but if I move the computer some inches the connection fails and goes from "connected" to "limited connectivity" and no access to internet whatsoever.
Called HP and after doing a lot of procedures (updating, disabling, enabling, reinstalling drivers ) finally had to send the computer to HP. A week and a half later received my laptop with no information of what was done but was working correclty...until July, when someday the computer shut down and after starting it again same problem began again!!! Called HP and again, had to do the same procedures as the other time working some days and others having the same problem.
Finally, Had to send the laptop again to HP on August the 19th, it seems they repaired it and sent it back to me on the 26th...but UPS returned the laptop to them after two attempts of delivery to my home address (their policy is three attempts and after retain the package for 5 days before returning the package).
So I called UPS, they said is HP fault, I called HP, they said is UPS fault...so as of today, and after calling every day two times a day, speaking to three different case managers (supervisors), writing letters to them...my computer stills on HP repair services!!!
I really was upset and I requested a refund (guarantee says I am entitled to a refund but depends of HP criteria), and of course, I got nothing, client never gets anything. I told them I didn't want a product that I sent twice for the same problem and they just told me that they can not do anything but wait and see if the product has the same or different problem again to see if they can offer something else.
But also, they "advised me" to BUY THE EXTENDED GUARANTEE PLAN because if the problem arises again after the guarantee is over they won't be responsible!!!
I am really upset, HP Customer Service do not do anything to help me solve the issue, I am still waiting for the computer and they just make excuses to not offer me at least a different unit if a refund is not in place.
So finally, the only screwed here is the client. I will never ever buy HP products again and I will tell every one I know my experience with them.
Is the product good?? I haven't had really a chance to work with it!!! -

Summary: All in all I'm satisfied with this laptop with a few exceptions. I had to take out the tablet software because no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get it write properly. Also the fingerprint scanner was more of a hassle than it was worth so I removed the software for that as well. Batter life is abysmal. You're lucky to get an hour out of it and that's if you're only doing low productivity work like Internet surfing. The laptop does have a tendency to get hot. On the plus side is that you get plenty of hd disk space, along with a webcam. Also I like the small size because I travel a lot and I'm able to put it into my backpack.

Great value for entry level or advanced
by ALAPIES on July 7, 2008
Pros: Small/lightweight; brilliant screen resolution and brightness, feature rich, touch-screen and pen-enabled, built in web-cam, finger-print scanner, stereo microphones, backlit function buttons,
Cons: Runs incredibly hot on battery and AC power, large battery, incredibly poor battery life, non-true 'Tablet PC' writing functionality, no full PCMCIA cardslot, no docking station

I've been a die hard user of the IBM Thinkpad X60 Tablet and have been pleasantly surprised since the switch to this new HP.
The personal features (such as DVD integration, HP photo/cam/dvd software and more) make this a fantastic personal computer for the price - business users will also be impressed with advanced features such as the touch-screen mixed with the tablet/pen and swivel monitor. It would enhance any workforce not requiring the strength of a Panasonic Toughbook.
Some considerations: The unit runs very hot - heat exhaust (on the right hand bottom side) is pretty warm; but nothing unusual for Dell and IBM tablets I've had previously.
I'm also very disappointed by the battery life - this can be increased by reducing brightness, disabling wireless (bluetooth, 802.11, IR, etc) but still will not get you through a plane ride. This can be fixed by ordering an extended life 9-cell battery.
Overall a high-recommend for the price. -

Summary: I bought this tablet hoping to get a quality HP product. Almost from the start the OS did not get along with the hardware. Constant rebooting and restoring the system was getting irritating and I was blaming the OS. Finally, after 3 months of use, the hard drive failed. Of course HP support is no help, and the warranty means "here's the parts, fix it yourself".
Run away from this doggy. -

Pros: Nice glossy screen, Tablet capabilities, nice finger touch, all around smooth

Summary: I really love this laptop. I understand the scren is not wacom and only a touch screen but for the price you cant beat this laptop. The right shift key i s a little small for when you type and such. The screen is so glossy when you take it on the road and it is sunny you cant see anything on the screen. The graphics card is alright for a integrated one. Probably not the most high end graphics card but good for what this laptop is made for. I ran it through canirunit.com to see if it says I could run a few games and the grpahics card is the only thing holding me back. It has check marks besides pixel shader and such but it just says it is to small or something. All around really good, but for big high class gaming look somewhere.

Excellent tablet PC

Summary: I picked up the HP TX1320US at CompUSA last night. I was concerned about the heat problem and whether it would handle Windows Vista. I found that with the 2 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM and 250 GB hard drive it works very well. I have a TC1100 and really needed additional processor power. This unit has it. The screen is bright and clear. The heat exhaust is hot but the computer IS a powerful laptop, not to be confused with the plethora of 1.5 GHz units out there. The tablet function is not working as well as my Samsung Q1 but I am "training" it and it is improving (see personalizing handwriting recognition). So far only one program refuses to run on Vista (not unique to this laptop). I highly recommend this unit for those that need real computer horsepower (engineering, medical, simulations, graphic artists, etc) and note taking mobility.
Updated
I purchased the tx1320us before Christmas 2007. This is the best laptop I have ever had. It is fast, large hard disk, runs vista with no problems, and lightweight. Battery life and heat is a function of the processor speed. This machine has 2GHz dual-core so it will consume some power. The battery life is 2.5 hrs so I carry a spare battery. I have not had an issue with overheating. The tablet is not as good as my Samsung Q1B but it improves with training.
