The good: In an act of aggressive tech convergence, Apple has consolidated your Netbook, e-reader, gaming device, photo frame, and iPod into an elegant, affordable supergadget. Features such as Bluetooth, 802.11n Wi-Fi, movie rentals, 10 hours of battery life, optional 3G wireless, and the most-celebrated App Store on the planet have us pretty worked up.
The bad: The iPad's large size is as much a hindrance as it is an advantage. As a jack-of-all-trades and a master of few, the iPad can't entirely mimic many of the specialized products it seeks to replace. The iPad's lack of front or rear cameras, Flash support, and integrated HD video output already have us pining for next year's model.
The bottom line: The Apple iPad is the first affordable tablet computer worth owning, but it won't (yet) replace your laptop.

Best tablet out there!
by prohobbyist on January 3, 2011
Pros: Outstanding screen, best touch interface, long battery life, fast processor, accurate GPS, etc...
Cons: Screen is just the *wrong* size, speaker sucks.

Summary: When the iPad came out I was disappointed. Everyone expected Apple to release a revolutionary tablet computer and then they camer out with -- a giant iPhone. I thought "what is the use for that, why would anybody buy it?" But then I heard about an app called Foreflight to use in aircraft navigation and realized that I had a use for it, so I got one. And I love it. I can use it all day with the battery, and the screen is very sharp looking and bright enough for daylight use. The touch interface is much smoother and easier to use than any other product I've tried, including the Galaxy Tab. When using maps the GPS almost instantly pickes up a signal and the accuracy to 5 meters. My only complaints are the speaker, and the screen size. The speaker provides mono sound from the bottom of the device where your hand covers up, and generally sounds bad. As for the screen, it's just a tad bit too small to surf the inernet without zooming in on things, but just a tad bit too large to fit in your pocket. Otherwise this is a very finely made device. I would definitely recommend one, but only if you really need the 3G or GPS features to justify the extra cost.

Great product with unlimited apps. Quite amazing
by rrhann on June 4, 2010
Pros: it's easy to carry, small with many apps and the touch screen is simple enough. Really doesn't require reading to figure it out, though it can be difficult.
Cons: Safari is a terrible browser. Pass words used for yahoo mail does not allow log-in. Can be extremely frustrating. I have tried every password to my computer mail and still after two weeks unable to access mail..
Summary: As experienced as I thought I was, this is very challenging. I hope to see the next version be more user friendly. It is an amazing piece of technology.

Excellent Mobile Computer
by KCosta on May 31, 2010
Pros: It has great battery life, quick response to touch commands and fast processing speeds.
Cons: At this point the only thing that I wished it would do is print, but I understand that that feature may come in the fall when the system software is updated.
Summary: I love my iPad, it is functional and enjoyable to use.

A giant IPAD, but that's pretty neat
by carmazon on May 13, 2010
Pros: A mobile appliance that lets you do email, read books and periodicals, play music ( the sound without headphones or external speakers) is surprisingly good quality and strength, surf the web, and have great gps all the time. 3g connection works well.
Cons: No camera, no usb port, and most annoyingly no multi-tasting--If you're listening to internet radio/music the machine become a music machine because you can't do anything else at the same time.

Summary: I have an ipod touch and my first day with this I thought "well, this is just a giant i-touch." However, after 48 hours the implications of having a larger version of the ipod(and my IPAD has 3g) that is always connected was actually pretty impressive. Reading email, newspapers, books, etc, on this wonderful screen is a dramatically different experience from using an ipod or a laptop or netbook. It's something that you can carry around all day in ways that just wouldn't be as practical with even a netbook. The sound quality without ear buds or external speakers is remarkably good. Having a gps that can directly connect to where you are and your contacts is very convenient. Frustrating that most of the iphone apps still haven't been modified to work well with IPAD but I assume that's a matter of time, and market place will take care of that. Not being able to multitask on something like this is the most frustrating aspect for me. Ibook format is very nice, and you also use your kindle subscription but with different format than Ibook. I have not checked to see the breadth of the ibook offerings. I've read concern about the att 3g connection. I have had no problem and it's worked pretty much everywhere with no interruption in service and been remarkably fast. Since I don't have an iphone and I gave up my smart phone for one that actually allows me to make clear phone calls, the constant 3g connectivity is very nice. Obviously it expands the functionality of the device. If we had better wifi availability in this country the 3g wouldn't be that important. Since att does offer month to month option with no contractual commitment beyond a month you can always purchase and terminate based on your expectations for that month. (I actually think this isn't such a great loss for ATT because you're more likely to sign up if you don't have to commit, but you're probably not going to want to give it up once you have it.) Personally, I don't see it right now as a work tool beyond reading email and webaccess and I didn't purchase it with that expectation. You can probably live without it, but if you like networking, gadgets, and convenience and can afford it, it is a nifty item.
Meant to say Giant IPOD touch, but that's pretty neat.

Updated on May 16, 2010This isn't a massive problem, but weird. When I used my IPad this morning, I realized that at some point it had lost about 20 minutes, and was 20 minutes behind that actual time. When I went to MAC forums I found a number of other people having the same basic problem with the Ipad clock. It's just strange that a perfectionist company like apple that kept adobe off the ipad to retain purity of quality would screw up something as basic as a clock that keeps proper time. -
Does Everything I Need it to Do
by galindenba on May 1, 2010
Pros: Fairly inexpensive apps, fast web surfing, good battery life, sharp crisp graphics.
Cons: Limited memory and multitasking even in the 64 GB version. Must connect to PC to manage apps/music/videos/flies. Safari browser very limited.

Summary: I was very skeptical about this machine, but I was trying to buy my wife a Mac and got to play with this a lot and talk to the store staff. I was impressed enough so I bought one. This is not a product for a PC gamer or someone who needs to do high performance business tasking. It's a device for reading books, web surfing, checking e-mail, playing movies, and music........some games. These tasks it does quite well. The games are surely not high end PC quality, but for it's size the games I've played are pretty good and I am an avid PC gamer. Battery life was advertised at about 10 hours and mine is pretty close. Multitasking is limited to listening to music and running another app such as Safari or E-mail simultaneously. Performance was not degraded when I did this. I'm been told that a newer OS is in the offing that will provide better multitasking support. Do I miss Flash? A little, but I'm not an on-line gamer and don't utilize a lot of Flash based web sites or programs. Having said that I do wish Jobs and Adobe would kiss and make up for the benefit of all. My biggest dislike I guess was the fact that like an I-Pod I'm still tied to my PC to delete apps, files, photos, video, and music. My other dislike is the limited memory. While apps, music, books, and photos don't take up much memory, if you want to carry a lot of movies they take up quite a bit of space and don't leave room for much else.
I have not used the 3G function, but the unique contract that Apple worked out with ATT where you're not locked into long term contract, but can go month to month or skip a month was a great move!!!
In summary, I really enjoy using the I-Pad. It's fun and easy to use. This product I think is aimed at the mainstream consumer and not somebody who needs a lot of computing power. For the mainstream consumer market this will be a great product.
In summary, I really am enjoying this product. It's fun and easy to use and performs well. Th

- Part number: MC496LL/A
- Description: A large, high-resolution LED-backlit IPS display. An incredibly responsive Multi-Touch screen. And an amazingly powerful Apple-designed chip. All in a design that's thin and light enough to take anywhere. iPad isn't just the best device of its kind. It's a whole new kind of device. The high-resolution, 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS display on iPad is remarkably crisp and vivid. Which makes it perfect for web browsing, watching movies, or viewing photos. With iPad, there is no up or down. It's designed to show off your content in portrait or landscape orientation with every turn. And because it uses a display technology called IPS (in-plane switching), it has a wide, 178° viewing angle. So you can hold it almost any way you want and still get a brilliant picture, with excellent color and contrast. The Multi-Touch screen on iPad is based on the same revolutionary technology on iPhone. But the technology has been completely reengineered for the larger iPad surface, making it extremely precise and responsive. So whether you're zooming in on a map, flicking through your photos, or deleting an email, iPad responds with incredible accuracy. And it does just what you want it to. If you want to extend your network coverage further, choose iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G and sign up for access to 3G data service. iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G offers super fast data speeds over 3G cellular networks around the world. It's perfect when you're out and about with no access to a Wi-Fi network, because you can still get a fast connection for surfing the web, sending and receiving email, or getting directions. Since iPad seamlessly switches between 3G and even faster Wi-Fi, you always get the best connection available.
