Asus Eee Pad Transformer (16GB, Wi-Fi) price range: $408.62 - $448.89
- Reviewed by: Eric Franklin
- Reviewed on: 04/21/2011
The good: At $350, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer is one of the lowest priced full-sized, Android 4.0-upgradable tablets. Also, its high-quality screen and relatively cheap keyboard/dock make it an attractive option.
The bad: A few things keep the Transformer from completely blowing us away: the choppy recording and playback of the camcorder; its sharp edges; a build quality that's somewhat lacking; and problems that arise when docking.
The bottom line: The Asus Eee Pad Transformer is a low-price, quality Android tablet with useful options.

Solid build and stylish design but plagued with bugs
by XSYLUS on March 25, 2012
Pros: Solid build, stylish design, not too heavy /not too light. MicroSD slot, microHDMI. Very responsive and functional.
Cons: Plagued with both hardware and software issues. Volume and power buttons are too close together IMO. The charging port is not in the most convenient place. Plenty of room for improvement. Overpriced by a mile.

Summary: This was my first experience with an Android tablet and I must say I was a bit underwhelmed. The biggest annoyance was that it would shut itself completely off when idle or sometimes just when being gently placed on a desk or bed. I don't know if the issue is hardware or software based but I had to return it for a replacement. Not a good first impression. Based on what I've read in forums these units are plagued with bugs which is rediculous. Why would any company release a product trying to compete with the iPAD without making sure their product worked well? There's absolutely no reason these units should be plagued with as many issues as they are. If I wasn't so against Apple's politics I'd probably get an iPAD just because I'd have a whole lot more confidence that it would actually work like it's supposed to. If I wanted bugs I'd go to a freakin' bait shop. These units are overpriced. If they were a real solid competition with the iPAD as far as quality and functionality then I could see the price tag being justified but you can't sell me junk for the same price as the iPAD that's just unacceptible and doesn't speak well for your company or how much your company really cares about its consumers. Hopefully when I get my replacement TF101 it won't be as glitchy as the first but I'm not getting my hopes up too much. I'm glad I waited and didn't pay full price for my tablet though.

First tablet and I love it!
by CatGuyTX on March 8, 2012
Pros: Great picture from all angles, responsive captive multi-touch screen, great for web surfing, Netflix, and I haven't found anything I can't do with it! I'm a web design student and I've even incorporated it into my school. Found C++ viewers and compilers f
Cons: Only 1 micro-HDMI port on the tablet. I really wish it had USB or even a Micro-SD slot. If you purchase the Asus docking station, you get these extra ports.
Summary: I am totally satisfied and am happy with my purchase.

Summary: I've had my Transformer for over a month. It works really well. Perfect as an ereader and watching online movies/tv. I can even print from it to my home printer when I'm away from home.
I don't even pick up my laptop at home, anymore. The spreadsheet software is compatible to excel. The android apps are pretty extensive. I can find anything I need.
Overall, I'm very happy with this tablet. -
For people on a budget...
by jjuane on February 1, 2012
Pros: Affordable, wide screen, looks and feel awesome to hold, apps aplenty, microSD up to 32GB, long battery life, an even longer battery life when attached to keyboard dock, it's also a big GPS.
Cons: Short charging cord & iffy adapter, the cost of the keyboard dock, video and picture is grainy.

Summary: I'm a college student, so looking for an affordable tablet was a must. I didn't care for 3G, so it didn't matter to me. I needed a tablet that was able to carry my "books" instead of lugging a 50 pound backpack. Buying this was a breath of fresh air; not only did I find an app that I could use for my classes, it made my back feel at ease. Back to the tablet itself -- the look of the tablet is very unique, to me it was stylish and very different from all the tablets I've played with. The battery life is awesome, I can use the tablet the whole day without charging (until I go to bed). I have yet to get the dock (although I've now seen it at some stores for $99), and when I do I can't wait to use the USB and have an even longer battery life.
One thing to notice is the usb cable cord and the ac adapter. Two words for it: IT SUCKS. Not only is it quite short, you can easily bend it the wrong way, causing it to not charge the tablet. After almost half a year of using the tablet, it finally broke down, and I sent it in to get it replaced. When it was returned I got a slightly longer cable and a new ac adapter. You can use a USB extension cord, make sure it's USB 3.0, otherwise, it won't work at all.
It's worth the money, but with the new TF coming out, I suggest you hold off for that one since it's a lot skinnier, lighter, and has better specs than this one. :) -

Summary: I received the ASUS EEE Pad Transformer on Christmas as a gift. I could not be happier with this tablet! If you add on the optional keyboad dock, which I bought today, the Transformer beats all tablets, including the iPAD! To make this review short and sweet, I now use this tablet as my everyday computer, it is that awesome! Fantastic job ASUS!

Summary: There are enough reviews with excellent specs so this is just my impressions of the Asus Transformer. I wanted something small and light weight and needed to occasionally type which points to a netbook, but I also wanted a tablet for entertainment reasons. These things are cool. The various bluetooth keyboards are decent, but seemed disjointed, needing something to sit the tablet on and essentially you had a tablet with a wireless keyboard that performed like a tablet and wireless keyboard. You have to interact with the touch screen for a lot of functions. When the Asus Transformer and Keyboard are joined the tablet behaves pretty much like a netbook making it a lot more functional than a seperate bluetooth Keyboard, plus the Keyboard will recharge the tablet if needed. The optional USB and SD slots are great to use with a thumb drive or eaisly take the SD card from a camera and view on the tablet. I have to see if the printer will work... The Transformer is not near as powerful as my laptop, but smaller and lighter and I love a tablet. I feel it is a lot better than a stand alone tablet if you need to occasionally do some heavy typing, need extended battery life or the optional SD and USB ports or if I do not need to bring the laptop on trips.
Some other thoughts. I would not buy any tablet without some sort of memory card slot for storage or a micro HDMI port If there are other ones in the same price range. Various manufactures have accessories that can be purchased to enable these functions, but this is an added cost and few more things to carry around and lose. The "cloud" storage offered with many devices (including Asus) is nice, but would is very limiting without WiFi not to mention they seem to have a yearly cost associated cost with them after a trial period. If you have pictures or videos that you would like for a group of people to watch, the HDMI port is wonderful to hook into a flat screen TV not to mention to be used as a video player on vacation. A standard movie converted for a tablet or smartphone is about 500 - 800MB. They look pretty good on a TV, not great, but beats lugging around a book of DVD's. I didn't really think that the camera would be of much use, but my daughter used the tablet and in 20 minutes made a short "power point" of the pets. It is nice to take a picture and attach to an email. No flash though.
If you do not need the Keyboard with its various benefits, then any good tablet would fit the bill. The 7" models are great for portability, with Dad loving his 7" tablet. All in all I am very happy with the Transformer and Keyboard. -
Quality and value for money; great tablet even at $400.

Summary: As a tablet and Android virgin I was a little suspicious/concerned about the experience I would have on this type of device. I wanted something even more portable than a laptop for general surfing, but needed something more substantial than a smartphone. I looked at 7 inch tablets and felt that the screen may cause too much eye strain. I wanted certain features, such as cameras and the ability to connect to my TV and expansion ports. So, i was set on a 10inch tablet, now my task was to find the right one while knowing I did not want to pay more than $350.
I looked and read all the options out there. I used CNET (would like to have seen thoughts about Black Friday deals and value reviews CNET - get on it) exhaustively and read every word concerning every model. IPADs were not an option; way too expensive; many other Android 10inchers were also too expensive. I was planning a Black Friday raid and I needed to narrow my field down. It essentially came down to a choice between the Best Buy offers of the Transformer for $250, or the Toshiba Thrive for $280 with the ASUS tablet being my first choice. I waited for 5 hours and was duly rewarded, there were still a few Transformers left.
Setting the device up with my wireless connection at home was a piece of cake and I was off, discovering this new world (to me) of Android operating systems. I downloaded as many of the worthwhile free apps I could and just enjoyed the device. The OS moves between apps and the internet at good speed and the screen is very responsive to the touch as well as having great clarity and color. Not too many buttons to accidentally press which I understand is an issue with some tablets. Not too heavy, although not the lightest tablet on the market.
The cameras are adequate (5mp on back and 1.2mp on the front) and provide decent Skype quality on the other end of the signal; pictures and video are easily posted to Youtube or Facebook. Despite some suggesting the build quality lacks a little, I have to disagree. The build seems solid and the design not only sturdy but good looking. The battery life has varied according to what I have been using but I tend to get enough to see me through the day. I can connect the Transformer to the TV via the mini HD port which was something I specifically wanted. The device plays Netflix proficiently and while others have said the video playback of video taken on the device is choppy, I have not found this, perhaps they have fixed this.
I have had the occasional app crash during use, but this is speedily recovered in every instance so far. My own lack of knowledge concerning the App market means I can't studiously speak to the availability of quality Apps. Others suggest the Honeycomb OS doesn't yet have a full plethora available for use. Perhaps so, but not for long surely.
At $250, this device is a win, win, win. It had all the features I wanted plus some I didn't know I wanted. My wife can't get it out of my hands and the Transformer makes lazy surfing so much easier to enjoy. I don't use the Facebook App, preferring instead to use the normal web page.
Even at $400 this device is still value for money, and I am sure with the release of the new ASUS Prime, the price will come down to nearer $300 in the future.
In case you can't gather this from the review... I LOVE THIS TABLET!!! -
