Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime (32GB, gray) price range: $375.00 - $706.68
- Reviewed by: Eric Franklin

- Released on: 12/12/2011
The good: The Asus Transformer Prime sports an iPad 2-inspired design that's even thinner and nearly as light, while also managing to include microSD and Micro-HDMI support. The Prime delivers smooth and clear 1080p video, and the 8-megapixel camera captures detail and color more accurately than any other tablet camera we've reviewed. Android 4.0 makes small but significant improvements to Honeycomb.
The bad: Not every game takes advantage of the quad-core CPU, and frame rates can suffer as a result. When connected to the dock keyboard, the tablet is top-heavy and can easily slide off a lap or table if you're not careful.
The bottom line: The Asus Transformer Prime is the best full-featured Android tablet yet, with a sexy design, thoughtful features, and an impressive camera.

Hands down the best tablet on the market!!!
by Carvega on December 8, 2011
Pros: Get one thing out of the way first. A processor twice as powerful as anything on the market, twice the memory, best camera on a tablet, longest lasting battery, and the most gorgeous 10.1" display out. All for $100 cheaper than an iPad! No brainer!
Cons: The optional dock comes at a premium price.
Summary: Honeycomb always felt like the future of mobile computing. Now it has the power to back it up... and Ice Cream Sandwich promises an even more polished experience. With or ...

Is everything the good reviews say it is!!
by mcampl on March 10, 2012
Pros: The Wi-Fi has improved with some of the firmware updates. Screen is great!! Operation is great, other software updates have also improved operations. Battery charges from keyboard battery if below 70%. Setting easy to change. Love the 32GB chips!
Cons: Battery life is not quite as much as stated if Wi-Fi is left on and power setting is boosted to medium or high. Some of the Market apps are formated for phones, not tablets. This seems to be improving rapidly. No Flash in the Google beta Chrome??

Summary: Received in mid-January with ICS already installed. Have had 4 or maybe 5 firmware updates since. No problems noted with the updates and significant improvements in operations noted. Wi-Fi now OK although maybe a little weak compared to other units. I do not use an N Wi-Fi, so this is good. Have not used the GPS so can't comment. The apps made for tablets are generally good, while those for phone are usually OK, sometimes the phone apps won't even install, especially if there is a compaion app for tablets. Did note big improvements in streaming video when the power is boosted to medium or high. Watched half a Netflix movie with no pause or flickers with Wi-Fi 3 rooms away. I suspect some of the Wi-Fi complaints may be from users keeping their power setting too low. I also wonder if some of the reviewers have not waited for all their update downloads. Comes with cloud storage from ASUS which I haven't tried. Used One-Note and MS Skydrive, synced with desktop OK. I was impressed, worked like it was supposed to. Tried several print apps, found one which only found one of my 3 printers until after an update. Could't figure that one out, but apparently someone did. Took off 1/2 star for purported GPS problems, weaker that normal Wi-Fi, and apps designed for phones. Some of this will probably be improved again soon. Also waiting for full release of Chrome with Flash ability.

It is far and away the best Android tablet.
by countrydoc46 on March 6, 2012
Pros: Base memory, processor speed, beauty, design, integration with the dock.
I waited to do this review until I've had it for a couple of months and I like it more and more.Cons: GPS but I use my phone so it is a non-issue
Summary: This is a great tablet and I definitely prefer it to the iPad. Great screen. Battery life if phenomenal with the dock battery. Wifi has been fine.

ALL OF THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS ARE BY PEOPLE WHO DO NOT LOOK LIKE THEY PURCHASED IT AND IN ONE CASE RANTING ABOUT A PREVIOUS ASUS LAPTOP. THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY BOUGHT IT ARE OVERWHELMINGLY GIVING IT A 5 STAR RATING. THE PERSON CLAIMING A 20 ft. WIFI RADIUS OBVIOUSLY DOES NOT HAVE A UNIT BECAUSE MY WIFI PICKS UP ACCROSS THE 4500 sq.ft HOUSE AND THROUGH A BRICK WALL, LITERALLY.
In short you will not be sorry if you are looking the the most advanced, best built android tablet.

Beautiful tablet with some bugs
by abvarn on February 19, 2012
Pros: A great screen; bright and very clear with great color. Very fast and responsive touch screen. Camera works well and takes great shots. This unit is light and the bright screen makes a great reader when you don't want to turn on a light.
Cons: Despite all the wonderful things the firmware has been problematic. i am having lock and reboot issues that are the result of an update received on 2-19-2012. This is the reason for my 3 star rating. Wi-fi connection is also weaker than expected.
Summary: Overall I love this tablet and it is terrific to travel with; much better than a 5lb laptop. The firmware issues are the only reason for the 3 star rating. ...

Great Tablet - Glad That I Waited
by PatrickTroll on February 16, 2012
Pros: Class-leading specs; Connectivity (MicroSD, MicroHDMI, BTooth); size and speed.
Cons: ICS still slightly "buggy" on this hardware; most apps have yet to take advantage of ICS and quadcore; weak WiFi reception.

Summary: Background/Rationale: I've had the Transformer Prime (TP) since 12/23/11 and it is my first tablet. I had been waiting and reviewing Android tablets ever since the MOT Galaxy 10.1 hit the shelves at Costco. Nothing appeared optimal until Asus released the specs of the TP. Note that I loathe Apple due to the offensively closed nature of iTunes (admire the hardware however). Also, I believe that HTC has done the best job of optimizing Android for mobile devices, but was very disappointed in the specs of the small HTC Flyer (HTC may yet have a worthy 10.1" device in the future). Since I had a very good experience with Asus laptops (2 in the family), pre-ordering the TP was an easy decision (also ordered a 32GB MicroSD card for instant upgrade to 64GB).
Have taken the TP on several trips and I love it. It replaced my MP3 player, Kindle and personal laptop. Can easily show/take pictures & movies, video chats, connect to hotel TVs, handle various email accounts, stream music, play games, etc... Battery lasts for cross-USA flights and can stay on top of news & weather. Easily tethers to my 4G phone so lack of built-in 4G not an issue (wouldn't use the TP as a phone anyway).
At home, use BTooth to conncet to the home entertainment system which allows for access to music library and assorted net radio to be heard & controlled throughout the house. Also nice to sit outside and watch Netflix or lay in bed and read newspapers.
Finally, I've noticed tons of complaints over supposed "WiFi probloems". I have noticed that the reception is not as good as my other devices (smartphone, laptops, etc...) running on my home network (Zoom 802.11b/g/n router) which results in a diminished range for the TP. However, I have not observed any instances where other devices are receiving "full strength" and the TP is at zero/one bar. I suspect that it may be an issue with the antennae design and/or placement within the TP. Since I have decent reception throught the house and yard, it's not been a problem for me.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Second try was a charm!
by Droid-Convert on January 21, 2012
Pros: Super smoooth, fast, great build quality, quad core, ICS, Dock, 1080 p capture, 8 meg camera, micro SD, HDMI Out, great battery,
Cons: No 3g, Wifi slightly degraded by fancy back, First was faulty, tf700 lurking down the road.
Summary: My first unit had issues and returned it upset. Saw it at Microcenter for $449.00 (until 1/29/2012) and gave it another shot. No buyers remorse at all. ...
Summary: My first unit had issues and returned it upset. Saw it at Microcenter for $449.00 (until 1/29/2012) and gave it another shot. No buyers remorse at all. Don't need higher resolution and I don't have to wait until June.
Thought about IPAD2 but no external memory, more $ for same internal memory and inferior cameras was a deal breaker.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Waste of time and money
by j1Roy on December 6, 2012
Pros: Gorilla glass
Physical Keyboard and the spare battery (it desperately needs it)
Screen resolution
CameraCons: Poor performance even on "hi performance" mode
Can't handle videos on websites very well
Very slow & hangs/crashes too often
Problamatic VOL keys, gets stuck
Keyboard is *not* well integrated with Android

Great tablet; terrible quality of construction
by RobertWFischer on November 17, 2012
Pros: Nice display; easy to use
Cons: Flimsy construction; have had two, and with each of them the screens cracked without direct impact; not covered by warranty; cheap glass; don't believe it is gorilla glass.
Summary: Even with keyboard cover on, the screen can crack if anything hits from behind or if it falls even a short distance; need to take extreme care of it since ...
Summary: Even with keyboard cover on, the screen can crack if anything hits from behind or if it falls even a short distance; need to take extreme care of it since it is very fragile; no warranty coverage of cracked screens despite it saying it has the best warranties. Very disappointed. Gone through two; can't afford to buy any more.

Great overall, some complaints and bugs that need fixed
by tylerbrown97 on July 3, 2012
Pros: Very fast game, and overall performance, average screen, but still high-res, great expandablilty compared to iPad, stunning camera, very thin, great battery life
Cons: ICS is very glitchy, lots of force closing everywhere, browser is extremely frustrating, A pain in fact. GPS is a known issue, but asus gave me a free dongle which improved that. Wi-Fi speeds are on the slower side compared to my other devices.
Summary: Great Tablet, but with some flaws. But I love it and use it every day. Highly recommend. But the Transformer Pad Infinity just came out and I will be upgrading ...

Good for both entertainment and work uses.
by jeff_comment on May 1, 2012
Pros: 1. Microsd/usb, open system vs closed for ipad.
2. Keyboard feels great, which makes this good casual business use, vs almost only entertainment value of ipad.
3. Can use normal windows office docs
4. Even with keyboard it is very light to carryCons: 1. Only hold 25 emails at a time in an email account. Very difficult to browse email history. This is a big drawback. So I still use blackberry for emails.
2. There is slight lag when I use finger to move page up/down. Not as spontaneous as ipad.
