Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet (16GB) price range: $162.95 - $199.00

The good: The Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet is a full-featured tablet with a vibrant 7-inch touch screen, built-in Wi-Fi, 16GB of built-in storage, and a microSD expansion slot. In addition to a full slate of books and magazines, it offers more than a thousand apps through its integrated (and growing) Nook Store and is optimized for Netflix and Hulu Plus video playback. The built-in Web browser works well and offers Flash support.
The bad: No access to full Android Market; no Bluetooth, GPS, or camera; no video rental (or purchase) option; sideloaded content beyond 1GB needs to be housed on microSD.
The bottom line: With more storage and a growing app store, the Nook Tablet is a worthy--albeit slightly more expensive--competitor to the Kindle Fire.

E- Reader NOT a tablet.
by cmattrun on January 1, 2012
Pros: Great screen colors, very easy to view in both color and black and white.
Cons: Low battery life. Locked down operating system. Extreemly limited apps from BN.com
Summary: If your looking for an e-reader buy a nook Color? If you looking for a tablet, look somewhere else.

This is not Android tablet it is a color ereader.

Pros: Great for reading Barnes and Nobles Books, Netflixs, Email
Cons: Firmware updates disabling important tablet features will be continually forced upon you.

Summary: Updates discribed on their web site as " The NOOK Tablet Ver1.4.1 update provides minor system enhancements." This firmware update disables the use of third party abs and seems to interfer with the transfer of some library loan programs. If you want a color ereader. Buy a real tablet and download the BN app for android.
You then won't be stuck with the limited app selections and functionality. Also found alot of the payed for apps on B&N are free at other android sites.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

too locked down, not a real tablet in my opinion

Summary: I wanted a tablet to use for work and the Nook appeared to be the best value option. However, the device is so locked to BN store it is not funny. I was just using the browser to view Amazon's site and when I went to their app store to just browse, the Nook browser would shut down. I tried this several times to verify what it was doing. It doesn't warn you, it just shuts the browser down. Once I tried shopping for apps on BN (laborious task) I did not find any that met my needs. I decided to return and wait for a real Android tablet in a similar price point.

Adequately-featured, low-end tablet
by xxcarrier on December 12, 2011
Pros: This does most of what I want a low-end tablet to do, but to make it work for me, I had to dig around for apps that are found in Amazon app store. B&N appears to be treating this like an enhanced reader, so they should reduce the price.
Cons: 1. Has a limited app selection; B&N needs to be open to Android market if they want to be competitive
2. Requires a propietary power and data cord and cannot charge off the computer as most other tablets can.
3. Needs to make all memory available.Summary: I am keeping this because -after digging more than a customer should- I was able to find the apps I needed from the Amazon app store. B&N will ...
Summary: I am keeping this because -after digging more than a customer should- I was able to find the apps I needed from the Amazon app store. B&N will have a hard time keeping the Nook Tablet from being returned if it continues to treat this as an enhanced Nook reader, though.
I would like to drop my review to TWO STARS and recommend the Amazon Fire tablet over the Nook Tablet after the 1.4.1 update, which blocks third-party access to other apps.
Updated on Dec 22, 2011
The tablet may be fine spec-wise, but on 12/21, B&N forced an "update" on the Nook Tablet. When I first bought the Nook Tablet, I was able to access many of the Amazon Store's apps without rooting the tablet; there was a box I had to uncheck to allow untested apps to function. Some worked, some did not work, but I was able to find a few apps from Amazon's much greater selection. I purchased a couple of B&N apps, but their app selection -both paid and unpaid- was very small. Despite the lack of apps available in B&N, they emasculated their TABLET by blocking non-BN apps.
While Apple and Amazon block third party apps as well, they at least HAVE apps!
If B&N expects to sell their TABLET at $50 above the competition, then they need to either get more apps or restore access to third-party apps.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

A major improvement
by nybioteacher on November 15, 2011
Pros: expandable memory, battery life, screen, price

Summary: I have been THRILLED for this device since rumors first popped up a few months back. The screen can't be messed with, and with improvements over the Nook Color, magazines will look AWESOME. The only valid complaints I've yet to read are the size (get over it, the 7" is here to stay) and the converted Android OS (it's half the price of an iPad, again, move on). As far as complaints about the browser loading only mobile versions, as someone who has used the Nook Color, I can tell you that there is a setting to force it use desktop browsing over mobile browsing. Reviews have mentioned that for the Kindle Fire, but it remains unsaid for this device, which is misleading.
Barnes and Noble announced yesterday a huge price drop! 16GB for $199 and 8GB for $179. Even the Nook Color dropped down to $149.

As a reader it's great, as a tablet it's lacking.

Cons: Expensive for an e-reader. Infant mortality! Battery discharge rate.

Before you buy, make sure to read ALL the fine print!
by mrudis65 on November 20, 2011
Pros: microSD card slot (up to 32 GB extra content)
ability to view HD content (though the results are not HD)
in-store customer support
1 GB RAM (twice the Kindle Fire)Cons: Of the advertised 16 GB storage, 12 GB of it is on bn.com (virtual) and can only be accessed through Wi-Fi, 3 GB is OS/programming, leaving only 1 GB free. Hence the need for the microSD slot. Verified thru B&N tech support. Inferior web browsing.
Summary: I was this close to choosing the nook Tablet over the Kindle Fire. But then I contacted B&N technical support. Imagine my surprise when I was told that ...
Summary: I was this close to choosing the nook Tablet over the Kindle Fire. But then I contacted B&N technical support. Imagine my surprise when I was told that 16 GB of storage is not really on the tablet. In fact only 4 GB is sitting on the device. This means that advertised specifications continue to be misleading (there already have been comments about the weight). I wonder how misleading the battery storage is as well.
B&N has a huge problem, in my mind. The consumer is not dumb. We will not tolerate being lied to, or misled. Compared with the free 20 GB of cloud storage on Amazon for Amazon Prime members (of which I happen to be one), B&N falls short.
In my experience, Amazon has been up-front about the device capabilities. Also, its browser (Silk) is way superior. I'm really bummed because I thought I'd give B&N a chance to show it had a product that I could be happy with. From an artistic perspective, I like the decorative sleeves and accessories. Sadly, the tendency to mislead has left me with a rather bad taste for Brick and Mortar.3 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

The best on the market, beats Kindle Fire by far!

Summary: I was considering Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire for purchasing. I got my Nook Tablet today and I'm very impressed. It has the best screen on the market in this price range - very vivid picture, not much glare. The device has a very clean interface, great lag-free performance for apps and videos - apps load very quickly. MicroSD slot that I used right away for the card with my content (not on Kindle Fire) and microphone that I'll use for making Skype calls (not on Kindle Fire).

The Nook Color is a great tablet if you're on a budget!
by jkever1 on November 18, 2011
Pros: Best thing I can say about the Nook is that you can root this tablet and turn it into a true Android tablet. After doing that you can over clock the processor and you have a pretty bad little tablet.
Cons: You need to buy a good size microSD card for more storage, plus you need it to do the root. The only bad part about using it as an Android tablet is that not everything works with it in the market, but I'm not sure if that is true for all tablets.
