The good: RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook is a fast, powerful 7-inch tablet with HDMI output, advanced multitasking and security, and a browser that integrates Adobe Flash 10.2 for a desktop-style Web experience.
The bad: The 7-inch screen cramps the powerful browser; the wake button is difficult to push; and app selection trails the competition.
The bottom line: The BlackBerry PlayBook ably showcases RIM's powerful new mobile operating system, but its middling size diminishes many of its best features.

Solid Product Rocked "only" by mismanaged launch
by cgl88 on April 22, 2011
Pros: There is a laundry list of very small things that make the product unfriendly right now, but the benefits outweigh the cost of not having the device now. Namely:
- 7 inch - very portable, lighter, hand-held can be done for hours
- Screen is gorgeous. HighCons: Set-up MUST have wi-fi so it can fetch the latest updates. Not a smart move for non-technical people, but on the plus side, it is said that RIM will update the device very aggressively every 6 weeks. It will download the entire OS each time.
Summary: The Playbook is a very solid and usable device. What it isn't is intuitive. This means that if you spend some time to learn the interface, you will appreciate ...
Summary: The Playbook is a very solid and usable device. What it isn't is intuitive. This means that if you spend some time to learn the interface, you will appreciate its design.
Early adopters should consider the negative impressions as written by big media outlets. The playbook doesn't have too many apps, but new ones pop up daily. It doesn't have BBM (the cornerstone of its advertising) yet. Rumor is that it is out in a few weeks.

Tip: to wake the playbook from standby and bypass the button, swipe from bevel to bevel (left to right or top to bottom any direction). For more tips just google crackberry dot com and use the key words tips and tricks.

Fantastic tablet - "expert reviews" don't do it justice
by shakingthrough on March 17, 2012
Pros: Perfect business size, excellent screen, unparalleled multi-tasking, flawless synchronization of BES work email, calendar, and contacts with my 2 BIS accounts. Relatively inexpensive. Especially great if you have a BB phone but not necessary.
Cons: Undeserved (in my opinion) negative press

Summary: Paired with my BB phone I can use the BB bridge which is a bluetooth connection to my phone. Therefore do not need a separate data plan for the PlayBook which saves a lot of money over the long run. Phone also can function as bluetooth remote or keyboard if desired. This tablet has everything I need for business including key apps. Of course you also get push email which is faster than anything else out there. Very cool and underappreciated.

Great Functions for the MOney
by mikercath on March 22, 2012
Pros: Processor; Blackberry Bridge; Video Chat; Graphics Quality; OS 2.0; Kobo app; Docs to Go; Browser; Size (when you want it to fit in a handbag); weighty - has some heft; Tetris; Angry Birds; Plants v. Zombies; PRICE!
Cons: Size (if you want the larger screen); lack of Java ; inability to bridge with some older Blackberry smart phones; price of accessories - yikes!; would be nice if the battery gave a little more juice; more apps!

Summary: I came to purchase my Play Book when I was researching the Kobo Vox. For the same price as the Vox, I have an ereader on steroids. The size and the Kobo app are the only nods to an e-reader - every thing else is full on tablet! The processor is speedy, Blackberry Bridge ensures full functionality with my Curve 9300, and since we bought two for the price of one iPad, I can video chat with my husband while he works away from home. We plug mine into the HDMI on our 46" flat screen, and the kids can see dad larger than life. The quality of the screen for both still photos and videos is impressive. The variety of photo editing apps is ok, but they seem to be spendier that what is offered for the iPod and iPad. I am excited to try the app that allows you to send files from the Play Book to a computer via a wireless network.
The app library is ok, and I think RIM would be wise to expand on that. The new OS 2.0 allows for Android apps, but I have not researched that yet.
A common complaint about the size of the power button being too small is true, but on the flip side, it is almost impossible to press it by accident. The price of some of the after market products (cases, skins, etc) almost gave me a heart attack, but if you are no married to Blackberry branded accessories, some affordable options are available. I purchased the Hip Street leather executive case for $30. It is well constructed and has reinforced panels to protect the tablet, while offering card slots and space for a stylus. For some, this could replace a wallet.
Overall, at the $199 that I paid for a 16GB and the $249 that I paid for a 32GB, this beats any e-reader in the same price class, and is an affordable option to the spendier tablets.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Absolutely amazing. The perfected tablet. Revolutionary
by nick13-b on April 13, 2011
Pros: Small and portable easy to fit anywhere. Unlike the ipad which you would have to put in a bag or laptop case the Playbook is so small and portable you could stick it in your pants pocket or inside a zip up binder! The screen looks way better than the ipad
Cons: Its very square but easy to hold. The power button is tedious to press if you have fat fingers but not impossable. The BlackBerry bridge is kinda iffy because the Playbook does not have its own PIN or built in email client unless you have a BlackBerry sma

Great device just eagerly waiting to fill the app gap
by jbgoldma on June 3, 2011

Cons: Key elements of the base software and certainly the selection of professional grade apps is not nearly there. There is no cursor control available on the keyboard or via touch interface to select a specific point in text you want to edit (web browser, ema

Summary: The Blackberry Playbook has tremendous potential given its powerful and solid hardware, OS and interface. However, the lack of core functionality within many of its resident "super" apps combined with the absence of many of the most commonly used third party apps (including some of Blackberry's own) significantly limit the device's usefulness and make for a very frustrating consumer experience knowing that addressing these fundamental software shortcomings would allow the Playbook to be everything RIM promised it would be.

Great workhorse tablet with the advantages of bridging
by Urbanredd on April 17, 2012
Pros: This is a solid machine with so much functionality. The Docs to Go are a must for anyone who needs a tablet that will do work. The mini HDMI slot allows me to do presentations for my students while bridging my Bold to use as a remote. It's my laptop.
Cons: As for most, the buttons are an issue. I'd like to see language switching integrated as well as a few more options in Docs to Go, like adding rows & columns for spreadsheets. However, this stuff is minor.

Summary: The Playbook is a must have for anyone wanting more than a glorified gaming machine. My wife and I bought these for each other as birthday gifts and neither of us can remember being so happy with a new device.
One App I just picked up allows me to pull directly from Google docs. I can then manipulate the document in Docs to Go and put it back with no hassles at all. Great for the work I do with the non-profit I volunteer with.
The Playbook is the best teachers aid I've ever used. As a teacher, it allows me to work with students directly and through their school accounts simultaneously. I can update assignments on the go while the students are posting, use it to do presentations and videos, plus use it as a mini blackboard with the Scroodle app as I talk to students individually. Now that I have this, more than half of my students hand in assignments digitally... less paper makes for a happy teacher!
Finally, the bridge is wonderful. My wife and I can BBM, I can get all my emails without redundancies, and my calendar is always up to date in one place. The fact that I can use my Bold as a keyboard, mouse, and video/presentation remote makes the Bold/Playbook combo a powerful pair that eliminates my need for a laptop.
If you need a tablet for work that integrates with your existing BB, get the Playbook. If you need a tablet for work, regardless of the phone you own, you should still get the playbook. -

by patelh47 on February 23, 2012
Pros: - Flash allows opening of any website that's able to on a regular PC/Laptop
- Great Email Native Application (with the OS 2.0 Update)
- Print 2 Go; makes file transfer for school/work much easier!
- Browser speed one of the fastest in all tablets!Cons: - I really do wish there was more free apps (Angry Birds - $5 in app world)
