Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (16GB) price range: $299.00 - $514.93
- Reviewed by: Eric Franklin
- Reviewed on: 05/13/2012
The good: The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is a well-designed tablet with powerful speakers, a responsive screen, and comes with Android 4.0 installed.
The bad: At $400, the tablet is overpriced compared with more-powerful competing tablets that offer better features for around the same price. The tablet's dual-core CPU has trouble running large 1080p movies smoothly, and its screen color accuracy isn't as high as on the previous Tab 10.1.
The bottom line: The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 comes up short in performance, features, and value compared with competing tablets.

Summary: I just received my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 inch wifi-only and am completely blown away by this. There is nothing negative I have to say. This is THE tablet to have! Bar none!
I also own the 7 inch Samsung wifi-only tablet, and this is a bigger, faster, better version of that (by a long shot) in the 10.1 inch size. I love Samsung's tablets. Perfect form factor and shape. And they are absolutely gorgeous.
This 10.1 Tab 2 is amazing! It's very fast and snappy. Takes gorgeous pictures, the screen resolution and pixel density is amazing. The screen brightness (when turned all the way up) is brighter than anything I have ever seen on any device! It's blindingly bright! All my apps run perfectly well. It has stereo speakers that are nice and loud. It has Android 4.0 ice cream sandwich and a Samsung overlay over it. It's not overly bloated though. Seems very minimal with the Samsung specific software.
The Peel app that allows you to control your TV, Direct TV, and audio receiver is a huge bonus. You can control any device. It's an amazing app and even let's you search for and schedule recordings, learns shows you like and will present them to you. Very well made IR remote control app for your home theater or television set. It can control everything.
Netflix, Amazon, or Samsung Hub movies play in 720p HD and look amazing on this screen. The sound is amazing as well with the stereo speakers. The screen is actually 1280x800, and can do better than just 720 lines of horizontal resolution.
The Chrome browser syncs with your desktop, phone, and other device browsers so that all your bookmarks, favorites, cookies, passwords, and recently viewed all show up on every device.
Social media apps are optimized for the larger screen in a pretty amazing fashion. Twitter, Facebook, Google+ are all excellent and function very well.
Your Google account backups everything, so you never lose a thing. Never lose another video, picture, application setting, or anything if your phone falls into a river. It's all backed up and can be restored.
It even has a GPS radio so you can benefit from navigation, maps, places, geo location, and all sorts of services and apps that require location information.
Reading books with the Kindle app is flawless. It keeps track of where you are on each page, makes life easier. Whether I am reading on my phone, or my Tab, or my desktop computer, you never lose your place, notes, markup, bookmarks. Pretty awesome.
The battery life is amazing. Still haven't been able to run it out. It's been almost 2 days of usage. Not heavy usage, but surfing the net, downloading all my apps and setting them up, rearrange the homescreens, and playing some movies and songs.
Samsung is the world leader in smartphone sales and this really shows why. They aren't overpriced products. They are well made and perform better than any other product out there. The Samsung brand is reliable and amazing!
P.S. before you will buy this Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, I suggest check for best deal at: Andriod4tablets.blogspot.com/p/samsung-galaxy-tab-2.html

This Tablet Is Amazing! Is CNET actually opening these?
by craig1211 on June 2, 2012
Pros: Light Thin Added Micro SD Card Stereo Speakers FRONT FIRE - Imagine! Fast Screen still up there with all the others. I have tried to love IPAD's 1, 2 and the 3 whatever.
Cons: Nothing except 30 updated models will be out next month! TAB 2 rated poor by CNET for Dual Core and a host of other untruths. Did you even test it? It smokes! Because of poor review I bought "The Best Android Tablet" - CNET The Transformer Prime!
Summary: CENET. you need real world reviews on info and specs foind on the interent. Forget "Benchmarks" Is it fast, easy to use in hand? Does it do what it is ...
Summary: CENET. you need real world reviews on info and specs foind on the interent. Forget "Benchmarks" Is it fast, easy to use in hand? Does it do what it is supposed to do? Its all a numbers game - Just like in all of electronics. Think of Dual then Quad Core and beyond as the new "Megapixel" marketing scam cameras suffered! I own a MacBook Air 2011 and hoped to keep the IPAD but they scam you by disabling GPS in the WiFi only version forcing you into higher priced models where they get carrier kickbacks! You fanboys must be loaded!! I use my tablets in a work seeting and light media consumption at home. I am on the road a lot and wanted reliable GPS and WiFi. Unless you drop north of $630 for a 16GB IPAD PLUS pay for more mobile data monthly you cant get any GPS on an IPAD, its also far to heave for reading a book - So I turned to CNET reviews and The Transformer Prime. I read tails of problems but A BB employee told me they had held production on the Asus to fix GPS WiFi issues. So I bought one the other night. Guess what Asus fixed the problem by removing GPS as a feature! Yes folks its still in the unit and will work about 10% of the time for a lock but It is defective out of the box because the aluminum back still cuts the WiFi signal and totally KILLS GPS!
So, I deside to switch to the $399 Samsung Tab 2 that CNET says is a step backwards and just awful and the color and the brightness suck so what do I get for just $399? Flawless performance, I dont have to pay $100.00 for the $6.00 worth of 16GB memory because it has an expansion slot And (this is huge), they had cases for them!
HEY CNET I saw your "In Depth" interview with Asus today where they report they cant and wont ever fix the Transformer and claim the coming replacment T700 is not a replacmet, you gonna keep that 4 Star Higest rated crap going forever?
One last this, I tried the 399 Asus 300, it is a nice unit but it seems your hand covers the single speaker on the back - poor placement. Also after remving no less than 3 crazy "Sync" programs from my day with the prime, I dont want the added haasle. Plus - You guessed it - No cases!7 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: If you are on the fence about buying this tablet don't be it is a solid device that gets the job done. As a teacher and public speaker this tablet has really streamlined my workload and having a tablet with an IR port comes in handy when the remote goes mysteriously missing at the end of a long day. Overall if you are looking for an affordable, reliable, customizable tablet experience that will not skim where it counts get yourself a tab 2 10.1.

AMAZING. It's extremely fast and the screen's beautiful
by cnutennis21 on July 16, 2012
Pros: Everything.
Cons: Screen is very very slightly choppy at times, but if you install Nova Launcher (its free) it will eliminate any choppiness. Personally I think it makes it just as smooth and look even better then the new Ipad. Get NOVA LAUNCHER! You will be satisfied

Summary: Be sure to get Nova Launcher, I would even recommend upgrading to the Pro version as well. You get so many customization features and you can design your tablet to the centimeter just the way you want it. This tablet is amazing on it's own, but while running Nova launcher, it just puts everything else to shame. I'm running Nova launcher on my Samsung galaxy s2 phone as well. I've never had any problems with it. Everything about this tablet exceeded my expectations. Colors are crisp, screen is smooth, tablet is fast, apps are great. BUY BUY BUY.

Summary: This is my first tablet and I have not used one before so I can't compare to other products. However I wanted to write this review to convey a few points that aren't addressed in other reviews I have read.
After a rocky start (see below) I think this is a very good tablet for the price. I was in the market for a tablet at $300 or price range with a large screen. I just wasn't willing to spend $400 or more for the higher end tablets and I have an aversion to Apple products for some reason. The price was actually $350 at Best Buy but I used some rewards to get it down to $300. There really isn't many choices for a large screen tablet at $300 - $350 price range. I think Cnet's review is mostly accurate however they should reconsider their opinion based on what else is available for large screen tablets at this price point. I considered the Google Nexus 10 ($400) which had better specs and reviews, but currently it isn't available to purchase from Google or at any stores.
I am pleased with the performance, graphics, and features. It has a nice feel and is very smooth. I think typing on a large tablet is awkward but have noticed a quick learning curve. I have used the voice recognition to type an email and am impressed at how well it works (much better than on my Droid X2 phone). I am also impressed with the remote control app (peel Smart Remote) which lets you control your TV and Cable box using the built-in IR port. It is different than a normal remote because it looks up shows that are on based on categories. You can pick them, read info about it and if you want to watch it will change the channel for you. It even has some limited controls for my DVR. It doesn't seem to have volume control however. It defiantly won't replace my Harmony remote but it is a cool alternative to the guide on your cable or satellite box!
A word of caution, when setting it up the first thing it will have you do is create an account with Samsung for software updates and their own marketplace. When I did it, I left out one letter in my email address and thus couldn't get the authorization email to activate the account. I didn't realize until I had done about 5 hours of setup and customization. There is no way to delete the bad account or edit the email address if it isn't authorized. Samsung support said I had to reset to factory defaults and start over. It was my mistake but very frustrating to have to start over and lose everything. So, learn from my mistake and don't enter the wrong email address on the Samsung account setup!!
My tablet would randomly restart while I was using it. This happened about 3 or 4 times in 4 hours. Then when I did the factory reset it would boot up for 15 to 60 seconds then restart again. Nothing I could do would stop it. It stopped on its own for a bit so I got the software updated and did some setup but then started again. I promptly returned it to Best Buy and they exchanged it for me. The second tablet has been perfect and has not crashed one time. So, if you get a lemon like I did, take it back and give it a second try!!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I bought this so I can watch movies, view/take photos, use heaps of apps and view content from my Samsung TV/Bluray Player with the Samsung Smart View App also I would definitely recommend buying this instead of the Apple iPad because it is more user friendly for watching movies and you can do a lot of more with it as well.

Beyond my Wildest Expectations!
by Mickey Kirksey on September 3, 2012
Pros: Setup was a breeze: turned it on & it said "Hey, I see your network, want to connect?" The first of many awesome features. Amazing screen resolution & touch-screen responsiveness, tons of apps-Samsung & Google store) 3 days per charge-quick r
Cons: Built-in speakers are kind of tinny sounding, but acceptable - I added powered speakers.

Summary: I told my wife I didn't want a tablet, but she bought me the Galaxy Tab 2 anyway. . .and I love it beyond anything I could have imagined. It checks all my email accounts, lets me organize and listen to my music, read the news, surf the web . . . after 6 weeks of ownership, I'd be lost without it.

I have always had Android phones and I have loved them. This showed up on Amazon, and I bought it with out reading anything about it. And its PERFECT.
As I mentioned above the screen is amazingly clear, you can never go wrong with Chrome, and all my apps from my phones downloaded in a heartbeat.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

A tad better then the 7.0
by nwappleluv on September 30, 2012
Pros: Easier to read it being bigger then the prior model I had
Cons: Customer Support is horrible, not able to give any help, you will spend more time shipping this to them to fix nothing then you will enjoying your tablet. Only buy if you never plan on contacting support for help
Summary: I would never by another product from Samsung even if it was for FREE.

Summary: Bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab2 10.1 on 12th December last year that promised a £50 Cashback. Despite providing the correct purchase and personal info 3 times, I am still waiting for the cashback 75 days later! So, Galaxy Tab 9 out of 10 but Samsung Customer service 0 out of ten. I'm beginning to think that the cashback offer was a scam! I would certainly avoid any future Samsung product that came with a cashback offer.
