Samsung Galaxy Tab (Verizon Wireless) price range: $400.00

The good: Samsung's 7-inch Android tablet is a serious contender to the Apple iPad, boasting two cameras, Flash compatibility, and a more convenient size.
The bad: The Tab behaves more like a supersize Android phone than a Netbook alternative. The Android OS and its apps aren't yet optimized for the larger screen. Depending on your plan, you may be in for a two-year contract and a commitment to monthly charges.
The bottom line: The Galaxy Tab is a beautiful product with features that will make iPad owners envious, but its in-between size and possible carrier commitments hold it back from broad appeal.

The Apples and The Droids!
by W-Fasching on May 12, 2011
Pros: Fast, lovely screen, good feel, did I mention fast
Portable! Actually, can discretly use it at the office meeting
Cameras, gps, multitasking, swype, voice recognition for email typing etc
Connected to email and wifi superfast and without any issuesCons: Skype seems to use 3G even when the tab connects via wifi?
Cam is not very good insideSummary: The "boys with toys" world, like the urban setting of West Side Story, is divided by two competing gangs-the Apples and the Droids. And like the Jets and the Sharks, ...
Summary: The "boys with toys" world, like the urban setting of West Side Story, is divided by two competing gangs-the Apples and the Droids. And like the Jets and the Sharks, loyalties run deep. That said, however, who better than a Jet to appreciate the life of a Shark?

I got a chance to spend some quality time on a Samsung Galaxy Tab while my brother played with my Apple iPad MC497LL/A Tablet (64GB, Wifi + 3G). I did not strip the little Apple logo decal off the rear window of my car as a result. But there is a lot to like with this tablet that makes it (meaning Droid tablets in a generic sense) the only true competitors to the iPad.
I had an afternoon with a Droid tab, and have over six months with my iPad. I don't claim to fully grasp all of the subtleties of the Galaxy Tab. But it has some features that you will undoubtedly see on the next generation iPad and at least one-flash-which you probably never will.
The big plus here is the camera. Like the iPhone4 the Galaxy Tab has a front and a rear facing camera. This enables users to video chat. Apple cals this feature FaceTime. It is not available on the iPad just now, and if an iPhone4 competed directly with the Galaxy tab, Apple's feature is preferable. But it doesn't. And the iPad lacks any camera so the Droid tab is the winner here.
Flash and USB-Droids have them...iPads don't. And that is not likely to change in this lifetime. Despite the fact that Flash works on every Mac there is, Apple will not be allowing it on anything running its IOS (now up to 4.2).Steve Jobs claims it is unstable and Apple is working hard to create a stable alternative that overcomes his objections. Presumably Adobe, despite its public impersonation of a bride left at the altar, is doing the same thing. But if you need flash, and you may, for right now your best bet is the Android operating system, and for tablets that means the Galaxy Tab.
As to USB, it will not be coming to your iPad, anytime soon, if ever. The Apple App store and application approval process insures virus and malware free software. The ability to install third party apps with no control over its code comes at some risk not just to purchasers but to other users on the same networks. Apple seeks to eliminate this risk by its control of the code reaching its operating system. Google does not. I have had my quarrels with Apple over some of the apps it has excluded or delayed, such as Google Voice (now available at the app store for free). While this may be paternalism, and a bit like chauffeuring your kid to the prom, at the end of the night you know your child will be safely tucked in bed. I have some qualms, but I think Jobs is right about this.
Now lets talk apps. Both the Galaxy Tab and iPad have more apps available than you would ever need. Apple has about 250,000 apps for iPhone and iPad and maybe 50,000 run only on the iPad. Droid is playing catchup, but it is catching up rapidly. However, there are roughly six million iPads out there as of the date of this review, and iPad has a six month head start on the Droids. Apps cost money to develop and many developers will naturally opt for the biggest market and design for other operating systems depending on how successful the app proves. If it bombs in iPads, there little reason to think it will work on a Droid tab. That said the best apps will be available for both OS. The edge here goes to iPad.
Display. I love the Galaxy's display. It is bright and crisp. But so is the display on the iPad, which actually has more lines of resolution but spread out over a larger screen area. Samsung claims it is a better display. It may be but the differences cannot be detected by my eye. Expect Apple to address any technical issues of display on the next generation. As to this issue, I call it a tie.
One area that isn't a tie is screen size. This tab is basically Kindle size and consequently its 7 inch display has only half the area of the iPad with its 9.7 inches of screen real estate (do the math). This is important for business users. I cannot use my iPhone as a substitute for my MacBook Pro ever. I can and do use my iPad to take to court and in depositions. I do not think the Droid has this kind of real world functionality. However I have not tested it and will reserve judgment on the issue of business utility. Otherwise the clear winner is the iPad.
The iPad weighs about 40% more than the Galaxy, but neither is heavy like tablets of yore. Both are heavier than a Kindle2.
Finally I want to report on the kid test. My brother took both tablets out to his eighth grade son, and when I retrieved hem from the teenager he was engrossed in a game-on the iPad.
Since a good trial lawyer always knows when to shut up. I rest my case.

Pocket sized and Power packed
Pros: Fits in your pocket, Android Market is riddled with tons of apps, functioning front and back cameras. It can be loaded with almost all the basics that you need when you're away from school, work and home.
Cons: Low battery life, gets hot often and fast for some reason. Flash is great to have but can be slow to load pages. And it freezes more often then I care to acknowledge (kinda reminds you of Windows), and you have to force close.
Summary: Bottom line I played and researched a lot of the Tablets on the market before I bought this one. And after a month of owning it I still feel that ...
Summary: Bottom line I played and researched a lot of the Tablets on the market before I bought this one. And after a month of owning it I still feel that I walked away with the better product thus far. Yes IPad and IOS are great, but I really think that the Tab is the best on the go tablet out there. With the 7" screen you have just the right size to view and use all the programs you may ever need. While maintaining something that can fit in your back pocket or purse, unlike the IPad, not to mention pretty much the same apps. If your only going to be using your tablet for businesss purposes around the office or home-office then IPad may be just fine for you. But, if you need something that can truly be taken with you everwhere, then the Tab is your new gift.

The Galaxy Tab is fantastic
by nilmah on April 4, 2011
Pros: Perfect size -- it fits in my pocket, I can hold it with one hand. I don't get at all why reviewers complain about its "in-between size." As to the OS "not optimized for tablets," I've had it since November and have found only two apps with which this is
Cons: The Tab does freeze up every once in a while for a few seconds (in the browser, sometimes in apps). Not sure why. Mildly annoying, it comes back most of the time, but rarely I have to reboot.

Summary: The Galaxy Tab is quite a beautiful little gadget. I can carry it in a jacket pocket, so can take it with me without a briefcase. It's perfect for reading (just the size of a paperback book), works wonderfully well with music, good size for video on an airplane, syncs with my e-mail and calendars, etc. This is not an awkward "in-between" size, it's exactly the right size if you want something smaller and more portable than a laptop with more screen real estate than a phone.

Good in theory, not so much in practice
by CrazieEddie on September 18, 2011
Pros: It's small, it's fast (mostly) and it has a lot of potential.
Cons: Either the hotspot or the internet connection isn't stable even when I've got 4 bars. The touch-screen takes a LOT of getting used to, especially if you are a touch typist who isn't into texting. Some apps appear to interfere with the Internet connection.

Summary: I bought the Tab because I wanted a Wi-Fi hotspot for my MacBook when we're RVing. Unfortunately, in the 5 months I've owned the thing, it's worked at best 15% of the time. Sometimes it appears the hotspot drops the connection to the Tab, sometimes the Tab drops the connection to the network (or visa-versa). Either way, I can't rely on it to access the Internet.
And while I've talked to some very helpful Verizon customer care reps, on the whole I'm pretty disappointed, and won't be renewing my contract. -
I love it!
by MichaelZarathustra on April 17, 2011
Pros: Just purchased my Galaxy Tab this past week. So far I'm loving it, so much in fact, that I take it to bed with me at night. Like I did with my Droid 2 when I first bought it last August. I'm bothered too, by the fact that phone calls are disabled in the
Cons: It's a little heavier than I thought it'd be. 13.48 ounces makes my arms a little tired when trying to read in bed. But sitting in a chair, it's great for watching video.
Summary: I've recommended it to several of my friends and my brother. Tomorrow I will take it to the house of a friend who is bed-ridden, and I'll demonstrate ...

Might have been great
by erineeblue on March 7, 2011
Pros: The size was exactly what I needed. It fit neatly in my purse and had a range of apps I would use for work, entertainment, and home use. I loved having my daily schedule right on the home page. Fires up quickly.
Cons: The Tab kept freezing up. Sometimes the browser, sometimes other programs. I hated that Evernote had to have a connection to work, unlike the version for the iPod. It just won't work reliably enough for my needs. I got frustrated and returned it.
Summary: I'm ditching this and thinking about the iPad 2. I'm a little wary of many products out there because I've owned so many gadgets, many of which ...
Summary: I'm ditching this and thinking about the iPad 2. I'm a little wary of many products out there because I've owned so many gadgets, many of which just didn't pan out. So far the old iPod Touch has been the most reliable, so I'm hoping the iPad follows suit. Just wish they had a medium size about the size of the Galaxy Tab.

Samsung abandons Galaxy Tab

Summary: Samsung has virtually abandoned the Galaxy Tab will all update support. Already, they are talking about Android 2.3 and 3.0 on future models, yet they refuse to upgrade the original Galaxy Tab or commit to any future support. I would not recommend this or any other Samsung product to anyone based on their total lack of support and communication. If I could, I would want a full refund. A total waste of money based on Samsung's lack of support.

Summary: The Pros that I have mentioned are more than enough reasons to like this product. There is nothing that I cant do with this tab. I was able to watch a live sporting event online which wasnt possible on the IPAD for obvious reasons. (Flash Player). Great device to have for reasonable price. !! 3g works great and wifi connects automatically when in the range tp preserve 3g data usage !! :)! !

I wanted to love it,
by ponyboyforever on January 19, 2011
Pros: Great size. Love how I could fit it in my back pocket or inside a coat pocket. Was also a head turner. Cant believe how many people would ask me "what is that thing?!" Sleek design. Many features that the ipad doesn't have, which is why I bought it.
Cons: Freezes often, after 2 days I had to power it off and back on. After 31 days i returned it to Verizon because it had died. I was charged a 70$ restocking fee, very upsetting. Wish Samsung would pick up the tab, not my fault there putting out junk!
Summary: Great size and features. Great concept but just not ready for the market. Perhaps the next version will be better, cant be worse, or can it? Buyer beware

Cons: haven't been able to find any way to be able to copy text from received emails so that i can paste it into another text. also, havent found any spell check on the e-mail applications either.

Summary: love having it. as a sales rep i'm starting to use it to show customers my company web site during meetings and large screen makes reading e-mails a little easier while still small enough that it fits inside a classic size planner/ cover. love reading my Nook app and newspaper apps on it as well.
