Toshiba Thrive (32GB) price range: $650.00
- Reviewed by: Eric Franklin

The good: The Toshiba Thrive's very aggressive pricing gives it an advantage over most other tablets. Its grooved back, full HDMI and USB support, full SD card slot, and replaceable battery justify its very bulky design. Also, its built-in file management system makes finding and accessing files in Honeycomb easier.
The bad: The Thrive's bulky design and hefty weight are not for everyone. Also, awkward back camera placement and a difficult panel removal process make us wish more time had been spent in the design phase. The LED lights on the bezel can be distracting.
The bottom line: The Toshiba Thrive is a bulky but aggressively priced Honeycomb tablet that earns its girth with full port support and a removable battery.

Great Value
by Woodsie-Phd on August 28, 2011
Pros: Battery is really good, and replaceable. Have 16gb, 32GB SD and works great. Ports are great.
Cons: No Movie or TV downloads. No Netflix. Limited Apps but more seem to appear everyday.
Summary: For the price not a bad machine. Not much heavier than iPad2 and more features.

EXCELLENT Tablet with Fatal Flaw
by NyteLyte on July 27, 2011
Pros: High screen quality, fast response time, sturdy, front and back camera, FULL SD and USB, removalble battery, nice stereo sound
Cons: Sleep of Death as often as 5 times an hour had to be hard rebooted after falling asleep. Also wakes itself up when turned completely off and drains battery overnight, some unremovable bloatware

Summary: If Toshiba can fix the sleep of death issue then I will change review to 5 stars and repurchase this tablet. But after sleep of death occured 3 times during a 1 hour presentation - I had to return it.
Toshiba has provided an update which solves the "sleep of death" issue and lowered the base price. I'd upgrade my original review from a 3 to a 4 given these fixes.

Thrive reviews
by chrisjm77 on July 10, 2011
Pros: I don't own one yet, but it seems that those that do are getting their reviews truncated! You owe it to us to fairly evaluate its merits, which seem many, so that we can make an educated decision. We need to compare it side by side with the ipad 2!
Cons: Non that I know of

New to tablet world, but thrive has adavantages
by alagator13 on July 12, 2011
Pros: Feels great in the hand if not in a portfolio. Has all the ports, etc. The web browser blows the Ipad2 out of the water. Replacable battery. Ability to customize experience. Email client allows attachments.
Cons: Lack of 3g, but since my android phone acts as a hotspot and also the thrive has the ability to tether through USB, that is not as big a deal as it might first appear. However the wifi it is sllightly slower than the Ipad2 with 3G. In abilty to attach

Summary: I bought the ipad2 because sams had it and it has a 90 return policy and I wantyed to compare it to the Thrive. Just got my thrive on Sunday and it has some real advantages but need more time to fully evaluate. The browser and email client are the real benefits in my initial opinion. I purchased this to use for business, and right now, I would say that for my specific purposes the Ipad is wining, but I chalk some of that up to familiarity since I have only had about three hours of serious time on the Thrive due to my work schedulea dn I have had the Ipad for three weeks.
I wil update this once I have more time with the Thrive.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

I have a Thrive tablet at home and an iPad 3 at work.
by jomeyertons on August 13, 2012
Pros: The usual specs for connectivity and battery, but also I am not constantly bugged for login info, I can actually FIND my content, and I like the ridged back very much. I have storage capacity of 100 GB, so I have lots of stuff on my Thrive.
Cons: Screen could be brighter, audio better, and volume control easier to use (same as the iPad - awful). Battery life goes all day but iPad is longer.
Summary: For most people, the Thrive is a better deal. It costs less, does more and will last longer, and by the way, it doesn't constantly annoy like Apple does ...
Summary: For most people, the Thrive is a better deal. It costs less, does more and will last longer, and by the way, it doesn't constantly annoy like Apple does with constant email and password demands, poor file management and a too-slippery body. iPad wants to sync to just one computer; Thrive is less fussy about monogamy. I reach for both at different times, depending on my needs - they both work well in different ways, but Thrive is friendlier, less controlling. I really like my Thrive. I put up with my iPad.

Caveat Emptor! When things go wrong they go VERY wrong!
by wlmhbtrust on June 21, 2012
Pros: Has everything you could wish for in a tablet - USB, HDMI, removable battery, nice video.
Cons: Abysmal customer service from Toshiba. If it breaks under warranty, then you are in for a surreal experience.

Summary: I had a love affair with this tablet that was, unfortunately, interrupted by Toshiba Tech support and call center staff lack of basic English and basic concepts of customer service. I could have saved my money and time by calling a 1900 number in Eastern Europe - at least the other party would have ended the call temporarily satisfied and richer for the experience. You will grow old and die and the universe will stop expanding before they manage to fix anything. On paper, this tablet has it all. In my brief time with it only one problem I noticed - it wouldn't update my music and video file list when I deleted them using file manager. However, my advice, mention Toshiba in your estate planning to prevent your heirs repeating your purchase mistakes. Do not buy this tablet under any circumstances. Settle for less if you have to. Use an Etch-a-Sketch in preference - it is more reliable. I really liked my purchase at first but then suddenly the bootloader appeared to have become corrupted. I returned it (cost me $25). It came back 2 weeks later with the same problem (and a new motherboard). I returned it again - same problem and two weeks later a new motherboard. If you repeat my experience, you will call them many times. Eventually you will degrade yourself and resort to sobbing quietly on the phone. They will promise to get back within 24-48 business hours (That's up to six days!). You wait for a box to return it and then wait some more. I am still waiting....

Thrive is the ideal tablet for the professional.
by gaycheckml on February 11, 2012
Pros: The Thrive comes with 2 USB connections (standard & micro) to use a USB keyboard, mouse, game controller, USB storage, or other standard USB accessories. It sports a full-sized SD card slot and a full-sized HDMI port(for external monitor).
Cons: The weight is a wonderful trait as you don't feel like you are actually holding something. The 10" Thrive weighs in at 1.6 lbs which is only 0.27 more ounces than the iPad 2, so don't let anyone full you.
Summary: Compared to the iPad it is faster, offers more standard functions and almost half the price (new). The Citrix app works great and doesn't slow down when using it ...
Summary: Compared to the iPad it is faster, offers more standard functions and almost half the price (new). The Citrix app works great and doesn't slow down when using it for professional reasons; running Citrix on the iPad and iPad 2 was inconsistent and slow.
It is the better professional option for those who are looking for a professional solution. -
