Toshiba Thrive (32GB) price range: $495.00
- Reviewed by: Eric Franklin
- Reviewed on: 07/13/2011
- Released on: 07/10/2011
The good: The Toshiba Thrive's very aggressive pricing gives it an advantage over most other tablets. Its grooved back, full HDMI and USB support, full SD card slot, and replaceable battery justify its very bulky design. Also, its built-in file management system makes finding and accessing files in Honeycomb easier.
The bad: The Thrive's bulky design and hefty weight are not for everyone. Also, awkward back camera placement and a difficult panel removal process make us wish more time had been spent in the design phase. The LED lights on the bezel can be distracting.
The bottom line: The Toshiba Thrive is a bulky but aggressively priced Honeycomb tablet that earns its girth with full port support and a removable battery.

Excellent tablet, Great Multitasking, 1gig of Ram key
by jfdjr413 on July 12, 2011
Pros: Not just a tablet much more like a computer, I love having all the desktop advantages, or as Mr. Franklin the reviewer said and I quote him directly "built-in file management system makes finding and accessing files in Honeycomb easier". Amen. Transfering
Cons: Weight is not that big a deal. I am surprised no one has mentioned this before me. I ride a train to work and you cannot hold the i pad 2 in one hand a read it like a book for more than a couple of minutes. The same thing holds true when I am in bed layin

Summary: Love the hardware, file sharing, memory, multitasking, syncing with my home computer(Windows 7), cameras, usb, hdmi, memory card,. In short this is a great tablet. I like CNET but sometimes I think the fix is really in for Apples ipad. Are 100,000 apps with 512 ram, LOUSY web browsing, horrible cameras, and no multitasking really worth 4 stars to Toshibas 3.5 stars. I don't know, very questionable CNET, but I still love your website.

Best of the tab line
by moe3754 on July 13, 2011
Pros: All of the things the other tablets do not have, Useable SD card Full size card not Micro, Full size USB plus USD mini, HDMI out, and the list goes on.
Cons: A little thick but no deal breaker at all.

Summary: I have had the Motorola Xoom, Acer Iconia and ipad 2 and none of them even come close to the full featured package that this has and none of them have a replaceable battery. As for the problem with the back cover all I can say is that the guy has to have butter for fingers ot ten thumbs because I have had no problems at all removing the back cover to change it out to a different color back. The SD card is useable unlike the Xoom which is still waiting and the Iconia which was a bad hack by acer.
What a utter waste of time reading this fanboy Drivel. Take your little ipad and move along, Uncle Steve will be along in a few to tuck you in and read a bedtime story to you!!! I had a ipad2 and replaced it with the Toshiba!!!
I have only had this for 24 hours after I returned the ipad2 to Sam's and purchased this little GEM.I have 32 Gb internal storage and 32 Gb SD card and now know that I will never run out of Memory no matter what I do.
All I can say is you can buy a Marginal Tab or Pad or you can buy the best. This thing was well worth the wait for it to be released. All I can see is it getting better with every update.PLUS NO iTunes on my desk top!!!

Toshiba Thrive CRUSHES the ipad 2
by jackson413 on July 8, 2011
Pros: Browser amazing, multiple tabs, very fast, great web tools. Ipad 2 Safari browser the WORST, 1 tab at a time, if I read a story on msnbc and then to go back to their main page, the entire page must be reloaded. I commute on a train and the real world of 3
Cons: Android has less apps.TRUE but everyone talks about i pad 2 's 100,000+ apps. On my Toshiba I have movies,music,Great web browsing,YouTube, Facebook,Emails,Spreadsheets,PDF,Nook,Kindel (ebooks) games,chess,puzzles,Photo editing,movie editing,skype,everyth

Summary: I have owned the ipad, ipad 2 and now the Toshiba Thrive. There is NO contest between them. Toshiba GREAT web experience with or without adobe flash, far superior hardware 1g of ram WAY better than ipad 512, All the extra interfaces available to Toshiba with their usb, etc are fantastic. The ability to sync with windows 7 effortlessly is HUGE. Currently I am jumping up and down on my couch screaming "I LOVE MY TOSHIBA THRIVE and I don't care who hears me" ( a little Tom/Opera reference there).
Only half of my review of the pros and cons made it into the cnet release, I was cut off in mid sentence in both the pros and cons although I was under their alloted word amount. I guess CNET doesn't take kindly to people who aren't APPLE polishers!!

A true netbook replacer
by urr_quasdim on July 13, 2011
Pros: Sturdy construction, fast performance, full SD, full USB, good file manager, QuickOffice, Swype beta works great, sharp and decent display
Cons: Shows up as MTP, not as mass storage device, when connected to Windows PC, Honeycomb 3.1 decent but not operating as smoothly as iOS, easy to block rear-facing camera with fingers

Summary: This tablet is for users who plan to use it for work-related activities - not just for browsing/email/entertainment. The full SD and USB capabilities certainly put the Thrive apart from the rest of today's tablets. Together with the efficient file manager and QuickPffice (especially the $8 HD Pro) one has all the tools necessary for producing/editing Microsoft Office-compatible documents. Pity that, upon connecting to a Windows PC, all Honeycomb 3.1 machines show up as MTP, not mass storage devices. Hopefully 3.2 will correct this. For Swype lovers, downloading the beta for Honeycomb is a real treat!
Swappable battery is another unique feature of this tablet.
A sturdy construction with fast performance and decent display round up the good about this unit. Hopefully Honeycomb (already decent) will continue to improve with time.
I am not bothered at all by the unit's thickness and weight, the former has good and useful reasons and the latter is a non-issue to me. I find the Thrive better and more useful than all other current tablets - especially if work-related activities are an important aspect of tablet usage.

For many users this is the best tablet !!
by rcj007 on July 13, 2011
Pros: User replaceable battery !!!
Full size ports !!
Overall, a the most capable tablet.Cons: It's a little heavier & bulkier than some (but to me it's well worth it).

Summary: If you're more ineterested in functionality than 'cool' this is it. In addition to all the other benefits, I can carry an extra battery for extended use AND when the battery ultimately dies, I don't have to be without my device while it's being serviced and I won't get screwed on the price!

Great Tablet for the price and all the features.
by Notsuchageekygeek on July 20, 2011
Pros: USB Support, Camera support, full HDMI out, GPS. Great graphics. SD card support for expanded storage. Don't have to deal with iTunes.
Cons: Typing seems to lag. Android Apps are behind the curve. USB input is not microUSB and seems to disconnect when wiggled.
Summary: One week of ownership and very happy so far.

Engineered for Functionality.
by DevonMeyer on July 19, 2011
Pros: SD Card Slot means you can buy the (relatively) dirt-cheap 8GB version and very economically upgrade storage.
USB Slot takes an external up to 1TB. Absolutely amazing if you have one (partitions for larger drives work too).Cons: It is a bit large, but with this functionality, and sturdiness, you need it. By the way, when I say it's heavy, I mean just over half a pound. I've eaten a heavier hamburger.
App store needs a bit more work, but I think that's coming.Summary: Glorious tablet.

If you're buying a tablet for light web browsing and news reading, go ahead and get a smaller, thinner tablet (I'd suggest the new Tab from Vizio).
If you're buying a tablet to act as a high-performance, yet portable, light, minimalist laptop for note-taking, video chatting, file-sharing, and the occasional HD movie in the back-seat of the minivan during the family roadtrip, I'd very seriously consider the Thrive.6 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Not as heavy as everyone is saying
by chrisgarza on July 18, 2011
Pros: This feels really good in your hands, the rubber feel back is great! Personally it feels more managable in your hands than an Ipad 2 or Xoom. And the best part? (sorry Ipad 2 and xoom) is the fulll size usb and hdmi ports. I like to be able to use a thumb
Cons: Cons so far? None that the other tablets have also, what I mean is just software or apps for it are just a bit small in number. Ipad2 has more but also no flash...So you do the math.... I have to agree with the review that the power indicator lights are a

The Thrive is the best tablet on the market
by xhanubis on July 13, 2011
Pros: This is not a large phone, its a small computer. comparing it to the tab10 and the ipad2 is like comparing a 15 inch laptop to a macbook air. .32 lbs is just not that big a deal vs what you get for it inside and what you dont have to buy and carry around
Cons: Could really do with a few more apps :)
Summary: The best tablet on the market pound for pound, period.

The Thrive is the most useful of the current tablets
by Bokeh10 on November 10, 2011
Pros: What everyone else is raving about! Unmatched connectivity. Slot for full sized SDXC card. Easy grip back. Swappable battery. The very useful file manager app. Toshiba quality.
Cons: The camera lens is easily blocked by a wayward finger. And if we have to nit pick the smallest possible nit, the on-off switch is not directly aligned with the power led. You really have to work to find a serious Con on the Thrive.

Summary: I love my MacBook Pro, but the IPad leaves me cold. While researching which tablet to buy, I was amazed at all the workarounds IPad owners had to employ to do the simplest tasks. Tasks that are dead simple with a USB port. Thank you, Toshiba. Need more storage? Pop in a SD card. Thank you, Toshiba. Long flight? Bring an extra battery or two. Thank you, oh you get the picture.
